Sorority VS. Fraternity By Riley Degner

A lot of individuals go to college and consider joining a fraternity or sorority. They are a well-known aspect of the college experience for parties and posting cute pictures on Instagram. Despite how fun they look; I am sure many do not understand the true meaning behind these groups if they aren’t a part of one. So here is a little inside on what life is like being in a sorority/fraternity and what is the difference between the two.

Sorority: For starters they call their groups sororities, which

comes from the Latin word, ‘soror’, which means sister. Sororities were made with basically the same idea as Fraternities, except the fact that sororities are for the female gender. When you join a sorority you should expect to find opportunities for leadership and service, all while making life-long friendships with others from the same university. Sometimes people view sororities in negative ways due to what they tend to see in movies and social media. In movies, they show sororities as just a group of girls who party and have fun with the fraternities. Sometimes sororities are known for racism, elitism, alcohol abuse, and eating disorders. Yes, that does happen in some cases, but most of them are for creating life-long friendships and helping the community of the university in positive ways. Sororities participate in fundraisers and other things to raise money for certain causes, they also spend their time bonding with their sisters in order to create a better team dynamic in order to make a difference. Yes, being in a sorority sometimes does involve partying, but most of the parties are for a certain cause or reason. So consider these things if you plan on becoming a part of a sorority.

5

Fraternity: A fraternity is pretty much close to the same idea

as a sorority, it just involves men rather than woman. Fraternities were made before sororities and they were built with a strong sense of community. When you join a fraternity you should expect to become family with your fellow pledges and look to them as brothers. Its common that not everyone gets along and people butt heads but in the end you just have to work through the differences and focus on the bigger picture of brotherhood. Fraternities are involved with community service and philanthropies, it’s also not about the partying. They don’t just bond over women, video games, and music. They bond over certain experiences throughout life. Being in a fraternity means upholding a certain personal standard and value of yourself. It’s a reflection of what kind of man you should be and how you should respect and help others. Most of the time when you see fraternities in movies and the media, they are known for being wild and party animals. That’s just for the views and the quality entertainment. If you look deeper into fraternities and consider joining one you will figure out the bigger picture and what brotherhood is all about.

If you ever consider joining a sorority or fraternity during your college years, do your research and find a home that’s the best for you and brings out the best version of yourself. Don’t focus so much on the partying, focus on the bigger picture and creating life-long friendships throughout experiences and giving back.

Essential Self Care Products By Emily Rine

When life gets stressful sometimes you need to pamper yourself and to do that you need these MUST haves! The first main product for clear skin is a good cleanser, the one I have found works best is the Clean and Clear Day and Night wash, it has several steps to clear skin as well as includes other products in the brand to finish off your routine. For this cleanser it is recommended a combination skin or an oilier skin type. If you are on the dryer side I would opt for a cleaner that doesn’t dry your skin out more than it already is, such as CeraVe or Cetaphil, as it gives back moisture to the skin creating a beautiful, and bright completion. Next is toner, a toner is built to give an extra cleanse to the skin as well as shrink pores and even out your skin tone. I have found that the Clean and Clear toner works well which would also work best if used with the Clean and Clear cleansing set. For the dryer side it is not a must have but you can opt for an Aloe Vera toner to stay extra hydrated. Finally, a moisturizer, this is a must

to every skin type or you will end up with dry, uneven, and unrejuvenated skin. For all types there is no recommended ingredient but what I have found works best for oily and dry skin is the Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream, a thick moisturizer that would work for all skin types and even work for a body butter. If you’re looking for a pamper night, grab a face or sheet mask and chill out for the night. Depending on what you’re needing: exfoliating, hydrating, brightening, detoxifying, or even firming, there is always a face mask for everyone. You can pick up cheap masks or expensive masks but they will both get the job done in the end. For a quick fix for a cheaper option I recommend the Freeman facial mask for a combination skin, this mask is a wash off mask that comes in a tube and can be found at any drugstore. For oilier skin I would go for a Glow Recipe sheet mask or the Glam Glow wash off masks. For dryer skin I would recommend a hydrating sheet mask, any kind would work with this one.

How to Save Money By Danielle Peters

9

Saving money as a college student is very essential, but it isn’t always on our top priority list. There are some easy and simple ways to save money. Food is a big part of life, but how you spend your money on food is a big part of saving money. Going to grocery stores that have lower prices is a small way to save money, but the major part of food spending comes from eating out. Spending a little bit here and there adds up at the end. In reality never going out to eat just isn’t going to happen so budgeting yourself to only going out once or twice a week will limit your spending. Another way to budget your money is only buy things that are necessary. We have all had those moments where we think something is important in the moment, but take a moment and think if this will still be used in a year or more.

Clothes are a big money pit and many of us fall into it. Get the things that you will wear for years to come and things that you could even sell when the time comes that you don’t like it anymore. Use these helpful tips and see the difference in your bank account. More and more money will be saved and that means when your friends ask to go and do something fun you won’t have to stress about if you have any money or how you’re going to pay for groceries that week.

Day to Night Outfits By Danielle Peters

1. Adding a cardigan

A cardigan is an easy accessory to get rid of when the night comes around and can change the whole dynamic of the outfit. During the day you will have a comfortable look while at night looking fashionable and not out of the ordinary.

2. Adding jewelry

Jewelry is an easy way to change the vibe of an outfit and depending on the piece of jewelry you wear you can go for a professional look or a party girl look. Adding a big necklace or even earrings is a good thing to add when you want to go on a date night or want this item to be the center piece. When you are going for more of a fun look a simple necklace or stud earrings is a good way to go. They don’t get in your way, but it adds a different aspect to the outfit and jewelry is an easy thing to put on or take off for whatever your night entails.

3. Add a bag

A simple cross over during the day has a casual look, but swapping a cross over purse with a glitzy hand bag can give you the exact look that you want. Depending on what look you are going for that is the type of bag you want. If it is date night the a crossover cute small purse is what you’re looking for but if is just a casual day then you want a non-cross over purse that is bigger and more spacious goes with the look. Hand bags are more for a night out on the town when you want to keep your valuables close.

How to Avoid Freshman 15 By Danielle Peters

13

If you don’t know what the freshman 15 is, it is when college students, mostly freshman, gain 15 pounds when they head off to college and aren’t able to balance their nutrient. It is hard to go off to college and still maintain your eating habits that happened at home. Making homemade meals is a lot tougher and eating out is overall just the easier option. This problem isn’t always easy to avoid, but for many gaining 15 pounds isn’t what they want for their first year of college or really any year of college. Some ways to get around this problem is to eat every meal and include a vegetable in at least one of your meals. Eating every meal helps keep your body well energized and eating vegetables is a wellknown food for healthy eating. Having a regular time to eat your meals cuts down on any snacking throughout the day. But if you’re like any other college student, snacking is a big part of staying on schedule and is an easy fix to a horrible hunger at the time. By keeping healthy snacks in your dorm room snacking won’t be as unhealthy and afterwards you won’t feel so guilty for doing it. Another simple but great way to avoid this problem is to get enough sleep every night. This isn’t the easiest thing to do because cramming for the exam in the morning seems a lot more important. Getting these vital hours of shut eye is important to getting well rested and there for ready for the next day to be productive and not so tired that you end up sleeping on the couch all day. Eating healthy isn’t the only thing that will

keep your weight down or even help you lose weight. Working out is a big part of staying fit and not gaining unnecessary weight. Walking to class is a simple way to get steps in through the day and more than likely it’s a pretty short walk so you don’t even notice that you’re getting exercise. If you don’t play a sport this is even harder to get a good workout in between studying and your social life. A good way to get this workout in is to run around campus or if your college is in a small town you can run around the town. With that you can get to know the town and the campus while still getting a workout. Some nights you may not even have time to leave your dorm so a good compromise for that is to do little static workouts such as ab workout or leg workouts. Sometimes these workouts are even more effective than running depending on how intense you make it. While being in college is demanding enough, also taking care of yourself is essential to having a successful college life and a more productive one at that. By eating every meal every day at the same time and by trying to not snack, even when the fruit snacks look tempting, and having a productive day are just some

of the few ways you cannot gain that annoying 15 pounds while at college.

How to Balance Social and School By Riley Degner

As you are getting into the college groove, a conflict may come up where you have to choose between staying in and studying, or going out and spending time with your friends. In order to prevent that from happening here are some tips to help you balance your social life and school work.

Tip 1: Try your best to not procrasti-

nate. Get that assignment or paper you’ve been dreading finished. There is a good chance after your done, you will have more stress free time to spend with friends and relax.

Tip 2: Social study group

Nothing is better than doing two things at once! Find some friends in your class and work together for the same end goal in an assignment, or just study for a test. This will create some social time with your friends, but also help you get prepared for school the next day.

Tip 3: When you are doing your work,

avoid distractions. If you avoid things like your cellphone while you are busy doing homework or studying, it will get finished quicker and you will have more social time later on.

Tip 4: Create a schedule.

If you are a super organized person and good at following along with schedules, create a schedule for when are the best times to do homework throughout the week, and also keep track of certain activities you want to take part in.

Tip 5: Work Ahead.

If you know what your future assignments are, or you know you have a book to read. Take the time to maybe get a head start on them, so it is less work to do in the future. Hopefully these tips help and assist you in balancing your busy schedule with social life and school work. Cheap Alternatives By Emily Rine

Instead of shopping at expensive stores, check out these cheap alternative stores that will still give you the expensive or classy look you’re going for.

- Forever 21 - H&M - Target - Missguided - Lulus - Plato’s Closet - Kohl’s Jeans – Plato’s Closet, H&M, and Forever 21 provides cheap and cute jeans for a low price! Both under $10 When looking for cheap alternatives you must think about your budget and what you are willing to spend on each piece. For most clothing you can find dupes or a similar look alike in a different store, but I have found that you can still buy high quality clothes in the clearance section or in any cheaper priced stores if you make the effort. When purchasing items online or in stores, try to find coupons or wait for any upcoming sales to arrive in order to get the best deal for the lowest price. For stores, the biggest money saver is thrift stores or any store that sells second hand clothing. These are where you can find name brand pieces without spending the full price or even a potential item that you can turn into a high end piece. Tips when going into thrift stores are making sure to go through

every section including the men’s section because sometimes you can find pieces you can alter or that were possibly misplaced. When finding brand named clothing that may be too big, add accessories such as belts or knee-high boots to give a higher end look to your outfit. With some pieces they can be cut into crop tops or any other type of cut and with jeans they can be cut into shorts or cropped jeans. Another tip for creating a new look to an outfit is patches and pins, this can really change a look. When shopping at stores such as at the mall or outlet stores, you always want to make sure you aren’t paying more at that store than you would at the same store in a different location. Always price match and make sure you aren’t losing money on a product you can get for a better deal somewhere else. Some stores such as: Forever 21, H&M, Kohls, Target, and Plato’s Closet, carry not only a variety of options and different styles but cheap clothing that almost makes it feel like there’s always a sale going on. When going into these stores the least of your worries should be if it is cheaply made or a scam but the excitement when you end up spending less on more. One of the best tips when buying clothes is to buy less online and more in stores. When buying online clothing you never know if the item will show up looking different from the photo and some stores don’t allow the easiest return policy. Even though online shopping is easier in the long run, it will save you a lot of hassle and possibly help from you losing out on your purchases.

Effortless Hairstyles By Riley Degner

Flower Braid

1. Grab the front sections of hair on each side of your head and tie them back with an elastic. 2. Braid the section of hair you pulled from the front and tie it with an elastic at the bottom of the braid. 3. In the Braid, pull the different sections to add more width to the braid. 4. Put it into a bun, by turning it counter clock-wise around the first elastic. Tie it up with elastics or boby pins.

Twisted Halo

1.Grab a front section of hair from one side of your hair and twist it tightly. and pin it at the back with boby pins. 2.Now grab the other first sections of hair and repeat with the twisting. 3.Take both of the twists and twist the ends around each other.

Unpolished Bun

1.Put your hair back in a ponytail. 2.Twist the pony tail around. 3.Twist it around counter clock-wise. 4. Pin/tie it up with either boby pins or an elastic.

Twisted Waves

1. Get your hair damp. 2. Grab a blow dryer. 3. While you are blow drying your hair take a small section and twist it around in your fingers to give it a twisted wave. 4. Repeat throughout all your hair.

French Braids

1. Part your hair either in the middle or on the side. 2. Tie on side of hair so it doesn’t get in the way. 3. Start on the side you didn’t tie up, and grab a small section of hair at your hairline. 4. Divide that section into 3. 5. With that section of three just braid it like you would a normal braid to get your base. 6. After that continue braiding normally, but make sure you keep adding hair on from both sides of the braid every time. 7. When you get down to the bottom tie it with a small elastic.

Dutch Braids

1. Part your hair either in the middle or on the side.

2. Tie on side of hair so it doesn’t get in the way. 3. Start on the side you didn’t tie up, and grab a small section of hair at your hairline. 4. Divide that section into 3. 5. Now this is the step that’s different from the French braid. Instead of braiding it normally you want to braid it underneath, so instead of going over each section of hair you are going to take it under. 6. After that continue, but just keep remembering to add hair on from both sides of the braid every time. 7. When you get down to the bottom tie is with a small elastic.

Place the apple juice, banana, frozen berries, yogurt, honey and acai puree in the blender. Watch while all your fruit blends together. 2. Blend until thoroughly combined and smooth. You are going to want your mixture to still be creamy and thick because you eat it with a spoon and not drink it with a straw. 3. Pour the smoothie into 2 deep bowls (if you plan to share with a friend). This particular bowl should come out with a wonderful pink tint. 4. Arrange the desired toppings over your smoothie bowls. You can add and take of whatever you desire. Make it as pretty as you want for an Instagram or snapchat picture or make it as yummy as you want depending on your mood. Then comes the most important part of it all, serve and enjoy.

INGREDIENTS • 2 tsp acai powder (or 1 pack frozen acai) • 1 cup blueberries (frozen) • 1 large banana (frozen) • 1 tbsp almond butter • 1 tsp chia seeds • 1/2 cup almond milk TOPPING OPTION: THERE ARE MORE THAN WHAT IS BELOW, BUT FOR THIS ACAI BOWL THESE RE WHAT MOST PEOPLE PREFER • fresh fruit • coconut • granola • nuts & seeds INSTRUCTIONS 1. Blend all the ingredients together in a high-speed blender or food processor. Blend until all ingredients are smooth and creamy. This mixture should not be runny but should have a smoothie like texture. 2. Scoop into a bowl and pick your toppings that you would like to add. Enjoy your acai bowl and feel relaxed.

INGREDIENTS • 1 unsweetened acai berry pack (100g) • 1 cup frozen mango chunks • 1 small frozen banana • ¼ of a medium avocado • 1 cup spinach • ¼ cup almond or soy milk • ¼ cup water • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed meal • Optional: 1-2 teaspoons maple syrup Toppings • ¼ of a banana • Ground cinnamon • ⅛ of a fresh mango • 1 tablespoon dried cherries • Granola or cluster cereal • 1 teaspoon sweetened cacao nibs • Drizzle of cashew butter INSTRUCTIONS 1. Remove acai pack from the freezer and allow it to sit out for 10 minutes to thaw a bit before making your acai smoothie. 2. Add acai pack, mango, banana, avocado, spinach, milk, water, and ground flaxseed to the blender (all are optional but I suggest trying it first before taking out or adding any other ingredients). Blend until smooth (usually takes me more than 1 blender cycle), adding additional liquid if necessary, and taste for sweetness. When it is done it sound look like a smoothie texture. Add maple syrup if desired, but usually a lot of the sweetness comes from the toppings that you apply. 3. Pour the acai smoothie into a bowl and top with your desired toppings. For the best results you should eat immediately before it melts.

How to Design a Dorm Room By Riley Degner

When you go college, the place you’re most likely to spend the most time is your dorm room. Your dorm room is a place where you can relax and be comfortable, while still studying and hanging out with friends. Your dorm room should be designed to match your personality and be functional with your style of life. Step 1: Figure out some of your favorite colors and styles. Step 2: Consider the amount of space you are going to have, and if you are sharing your dorm. Step 3: If you are sharing a dorm, collaborate with your roommate in order to design a room that works for the both of you. Step 4: Buy certain organizers, that will make it easier to keep your clothes and everything out of the way and organized. Step 5: Once you know everything you want to put in your dorm room, figure out a layout of where everything goes to make sure the room will function. Step 6: Once you find a color scheme and certain design style, go from there and personalize your room. Step 7: Add accessories to connect the room more to your personality and lifestyle. (Medals, Pictures, ect.) Step 8: Make it comfortable! Add some blankets and pillows to maximize the comfort to your dorm room. Step 9: Relax and let your college life begin! Positive and Negative

College Experiances By Emily Rine

My first week of college was very nerve-wracking. What is the best way to get from one building to another one across campus without looking completely lost? If I carry around the campus map, I might as well just have “freshman” written all over me! I had no idea how classes would go, how intimidating the professors would be, or what homework would be like. Not to mention, I moved away from my parents and had to figure out this thing they call “adulting.” It was exciting to meet so many new people that I would hopefully get to see again around campus, and the best part, all the amazing things I will experience my next four years. Answer by Megan Armour I graduated from Washburn University in 2002. I played volleyball the 4 years I was there, and I’m glad I did. I met so many great people, many of who I’m still friends with today. It also created another outlet for networking and led me to my first real job out of college. I’m still in the same industry today, 16 years later. Washburn is a Div. II school, had I not played volleyball in college, I probably would have ended up at MU or another Div. 1 school, though there are times I wish I could have experienced life on a bigger campus. At the start I didn’t know what I wanted to major in when I started so I was undecided the first few years; I took some of my core classes as well as some different electives to feel out some different degree paths to see what interested me. I didn’t end up declaring until my Junior year (I had to be declared by then as a NCAA Athlete). My degree was Physical Education with an emphasis in Sport Facility Management, which gave me a Minor in Business. Socially, we were pretty involved in supporting all the sports teams at Washburn as we appreciated the support in return. We were our own little community/family, which was cool. As for housing, I stayed in the dorms my Freshman year which was a great experience and helped me adjust to campus life and being away from home. I don’t regret anything I did in college as it taught me a lot about myself and where I am now.
