An historical appetizer

 Dear Guest While you wait for your food and drink we would like to give you an historical treat. From our restaurant at Thon Hotel Vica, restaurant Haldde, you can on clear days see the highest mountain peak in Alta, Haldde. The mountain is 905 meters above sea level and home to the world’s fi rst northern lights observatory. The northern lights has fascinated humans for centuries and it has been mentioned in many old books, long before men knew what it was. The people of central Europe thought of it as a bad omen or signifying war was coming and as a result taxes were raised. The Sami culture on the other hand thought it was their ancestors looking down at them. One of the fi rst scientists researching the northern lights was a young Norwegian by the name of Kristian Birkeland. He came to Alta in the late 19th century to build the fi rst norhtern lights observatory in the world. After one winter on top of the mountain he decided he had enough data and returned to the capital. The remnants of the observatory can still be seen at mount Haldde. Kristian Birkeland became one of the most renowned scientist in Norway and today you can see his face on the Norwegian 200,- kr bill. In the early 20th century the reasearch continued with Krogness and Devik. They both moved to Mount Haldde with their families in slightly renewed buildings. Life on the mountain was memorable as two children were born there, and they brought with them both pets and a piano. You can see photos from their time on Mount Haldde in our restaurant. No other place in Norway has the same history connected to the northern lights, that is why Alta today has the offi cal name “city of the northern lights” We hope you enjoyed this little treat and now you know why the restaurant is called Haldde.
