A Tribute To My Friend
by Miserable George
14
Old School Biker
O
n April 29, 2015, at 2:42 PM, I lost the best friend I ever had... Harvey D. “Davey” Kern passed from this world after a long bout with heart failure...a disease he never even spoke about. He was a quiet man, he loved to ride...
we rode many miles together, between Florida and Pennsylvania, to upstate New York, western Pa., and too many local functions to even mention. We clubbed together for 25 years up north, we camped in the mountains on many occasions , got drunk, and many times had to guide each other home. He’d travel down to Florida during Bike Week or Biketoberfest; we camped north of Daytona for many years... too many good times to even remember them all. He’s gone now, to a better place...no more pain. R.I.P. my friend, and may GOD bless you and keep you… Miserable George George M. Guignet

The Harley Rendezvous a
... n up-hill battle...BUT, they won…!!! The very first Harley Rendezvous was held in 1979, by Miserable at Washington George County Fairgrounds, in Greenwich, New York. I have no info on that event, but, like other early locations, it was met with opposition from townspeople and local lawmakers. Then, in 1984, Kemp O’Connell and his father acquired what today is known
as The Indian Look-out Country Club, just outside Mariaville, N.Y. They ran into opposition there too, but, slowly and surely, they managed to overcome those problems...I suppose it was when a lot of the locals realized that there was money to be made from this operation!! Things kinda smoothed out, and the “Vous” was on its way! We lost Kemp O’Connell to cancer in 1994, and because his father had split, management and ownership was turned over to Frank and Antoinette Potter, who have been running the event successfully ever since. 16
OK...our first trip to the Vous, was in 1984...all bikes, no back-up trucks, and yes, we did have a few problems. My electrical system was not charging properly, Big Al lost his ground lug on his battery, Davey and Bobby had no rain gear… (which was badly needed on the return trip), just the usual items that often plague riders. Yeah, we rode 250 miles in the rain, going home. Sandy, (my late wife) and I DID have some good rain gear…! After several rest stops under over-passes, and, hoping my scoot would make it with
making that long trip. Guess I’m just too old, but, it was a blast. Made a bunch of lifelong friends up there, one of whom we lost in a motorcycle accident in 2013. RIP, Chet Smith. I’ll always have the memories and tons of photos to carry me through. Thanks to my life-long
friend, Rick Kline, for all the help and favors he’s done for me through the years, concerning the Vous. Also, to Janet, and her (onetime) staff...we
a weak battery...we finally ran out of the rain on the south side of Big Blue Mountain! There would be 19 more trips to that party…(for me!) Sandy would have NO MORE of it…! That trip kinda started my career with Paisano Publishing…(such as it was!) We did get several pics published from that first adventure to the Vous, and, many more after that. SO...present day see’s me no longer Old School Biker
couldn’t have done ANY of it without you guys! Hope you’all will enjoy the old pics...they’re scanned, so the quality is not the best. Hey, ride safe... GOD bless you all… Miserable George

Moving Wall 2015 F
or many years now I have been covering the Moving Wall/ Vets Reunion to document the by ValGal event for previous magazines I have worked for and never really knew how or where it came from. Well, just in case some of you reading this don’t either I researched it and this is what I have found… Our Wall is a 3/5 scale of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC, it stands six feet tall at the center
and covers almost 300 feet from end to end. The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall® is part of the Vietnam and All Veterans of Brevard (V V B) located in Brevard County Florida. The V V B is a 501(c)(3) organization that was formed and incorporated in December of 1985. The VVB is a grassroots, community based organization. They strive to be an active member of the community by having a color guard and a rifle team to participate 20
in local events. They also support a transitional housing facility which helps veterans in getting back up on their own. They plan on taking this same dedication and putting it into the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall®; not only here in Brevard County, but other Florida counties and all of the United States as well. I have photographed each panel of The Wall this year for my readers. If you know what panel number your loved one is on email me at valgal@ oldschoolbikermagazine.com and let me know and I will send you the appropriate panel photo.
This year the weather was a bit undecided but ended better than it started out...Awesome entertainment, vendors and GREAT FOOD as always. Please come out next year if you have never been to this event. This is a great time to meet new friends and tell your stories. Camping is also available. God Bless ALL of our service men past and present Valgal

Leesburg Bikefest 2015 I
was very lucky this year; I had a “buddy” with me at the 19th. Annual Leesburg Bikefest...my good friend, Cupcake Debbie went with me to her first Bikefest...and... she loved it!! After getting a primo parking spot, thanks to Leesburg Partnership by Miserable CEO, Rachel George O’Ryan, Deb and I began our Bikefest adventure!! 6th. and Main was our first “destination”...it’s like the center of town. Big stage, a huge
fountain, benches, lots of food and drink vendors...a good place to start!!
24
We opted to stroll out Market St., as Deb likes to “shop!!” Great variety of doo-dads to pick from, huge crowd, warm weather, yup... it was shaping up to be another “hot” Bikefest. We worked our way back to Main St., and meandered east to where the crowd kinda thinned out, then, back toward the center of town, and a stop at the Media Center, for some snacks
and cold water, and, a look at the events schedule, which for us, included a hop up to the roof of the Lifestream Building and a beautiful panoramic view of the entire town, and surrounding area! Big thanks to our guide, Lori, she always does a good job!!! Somewhere in our travels, we stopped for lunch at the Florida Porch Cafe...good food, QUICK service...it’s one of our “must do” stops in Leesburg!! Of course, along with everything else... we totally missed the Rat Mate Bikini Contest!! First time THAT ever happened to me…! Well, I’ve seen Deb in a bikini, so, THAT makes up for it!! We did however , manage to catch the Tattoo Contest...YAY!!
Old School Biker
By now, Deb was hungry again, so we stopped at a stand, and she got an Elephant Ear!!! Baked dough, topped with cinnamon , butter, and sugar... not for ME!!! So, after checking out all the bikes, people, vendors, bands, babes, and... you name it...we were getting a bit tired, so, we limped back to the HEMI, and headed for the Space Coast...camera loaded with good memories of a fantastic event, and a beautiful Cupcake chick.
Old School Biker
My special THANKS to Rachel O’Ryan, Lori, Radical Randy, and all who help make this event the success it has been...and WILL be...Ride safe‌ Miserable George

Bike of the Month 1974 Ironhead Sportster Chopper by ValGal
O
k so Pep’s bike is a 1974 Ironhead Sportster with a “weld-on” hardtail section, lowing it 4” and lengthening it 4 1/2”. The engine is 1000cc’s and was completely rebuilt using factory pistons with Hasting rings and copper head gaskets. The camshafts are Harley “p” cams from an xlch high compression model for a little extra power. She has a Harley “cv” cam from a late model Sportster and a vintage “Holley” air cleaner. The pipes are handmade as well as all the footrests, forward controls, and accessories. She has a custom hand shift and foot clutch along with a custom springer front end. The gas tank is an “alien” style tank while the oil tank was custom made to fit the bike. The paint was done by Brian, from Soul Candy Customs, and was painted in the style of a Fender Stratocaster guitar. She has 18” rear wheel with a 19” front and has drum rear brakes with disc front. All came stock on the original 1974 Sportster. Boston Mike-Builder Alex (PEP) Carbonell-Owner Brian from Soul Candy Customs-Painter

Wheels Through Time: The Museum That Runs by Marilyn Elmore
T
he past 5 years has found me on opening day at Wheels Through Time in Maggie Valley, NC. If you're not familiar with this museum but you’re a fan of American made motorcycles, then I suggest you set yourself down to
read this following story! Even if you are familiar with Wheels Through Time, you've either been there and need to come back or you've placed it on your bucket list of things to do in your lifetime. This museum is simply that important to the American manufactured motorcycle enthusiast and motorcycle historians.
Wheels Through Time is home to over 30 name brands of antique and classic American manufactured motorcycles. Here is where you 30
will find examples of early Harley Davidson, Excelsior, Ace, Flying Merkel, Crocker, and Henderson just to name a few! Many folks are amazed at the sheer number of motorcycles under this roof! I know I am, but when you see the amazing works of home made wonders such as a Harley Davidson powered airplane, you will begin to understand the depth of this collection and its importance to the American experience. Each year the owner, Dale Walksler, his crew of volunteers and paid workers work hard over the winter to change up displays, featuring more of the acquisitions that he has purchased, received as donation or has been lent by friends of the museum for the purpose of either permanent display or simply a season or two. All in the effort to keep your experience fresh
as well as instructive and interesting. Some featured exhibits are: The Chopper Graveyard (my personal favorite), One Of a Kind Specials (items such the Troub, found inside a basement wall in Illinois), America On the Boards (board track racers), Slant Artists (uphill racing exhibit, complete with sand hill and boulders), Motor Cops (features examples of motorcycles used by varying American police departments). Another featured display is the
Old School Biker
Home-made in America. (includes the airplane powered by Harley Davidson). Upstairs in the mezzanine, you'll find the tributes to flat track racing greats, as well as an area where sofas and comfortable armchairs enable you and your group to sit and relax while watching what the museum staff like to call “time machine videos”. There is also a brand new display featuring some of the finds Dale has discovered in his TV series “WHAT'S IN THE
BARN”. You can watch this series on Velocity TV in your own home if you have access to “cable” shows. If Dale is not out discovering “WHAT'S IN THE BARN”, or out on safari mode at antique flea markets, then you will find him with his staff, educating the public about our beautiful and colorful history of American built motorcycles. Dale is an approachable character, friend to anyone who has a genuine affliction to motorcycles, and lover of our
Old School Biker
historic history of motorcycles, from the barn to the race track, you'll find a motorcycle that you have never seen, or perhaps one that your grandfather rode you around the block on, or perhaps you'll see one that pioneered and lead the way in the war effort. What every your motorcycle interests are, if you ever find yourself heading toward “THE DRAGON” or
the southern end of The Blue Ridge Parkway, do be sure to plan about 2 or more hours to spend at the museum. RATES: Adults----$12.00 Seniors---$10.00 Children----$6.00 WEBSITE: http://www.wheelsthroughtime.com

Law Ride 2015 I remember a few years back, the Law Ride was rained on... BIG TIME!!! This year, a front threatened the event, but was slow getting here, so, the ride went by Miserable off without George a hitch!! As always, a huge group of riders gathered at the Brevard County
Law Museum, on Saturday, April 11, 2015, under warm, sunny skies, milling around the grounds, visiting the Museum itself, checking out the great collection of law enforcement
gear, old cars, motorcycles, guns, and several intimidating gadgets which show what happens when you break the law…!! I’ve been to that place several times, and, still haven’t seen it all…! Very interesting!! It was kickstands up at 10:30AM, signaling the start of one of more interesting runs to date...a run up US#1 to SR 3, then back south to Kennedy Space Center, via a kinda twisty route...BUT...we made it!! Then past the VAB, and on into the heart of the launch areas...something
few citizens ever get to see...I mean, close up!!! We passed right near the old Shuttle pad...39B, saw the newly refurbished Crawler, moveable launch
pad...some new buildings, and a run down a short stretch of the old coast
road. Ya know, history was made out there, and I wish I had about a month or so, to just tour that whole area. But, 34

quickly. Now folks, there was a huge crowd of bikes out there, and they had to be moved from one location to another‌ a formidable task... but, handled expertly by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Motor Units. I must thank the officers for the cooperation they gave me, making my job so
much easier. Thanks too, to Sgt. Alan Rainey for all his help, to my friend, Doc Holiday, the MUSIC MASTER, and to all the people who made this run a complete success!! Miserable George
today, we got a small taste of it...very interesting. After a short pause at the VAB for photos, it was back to the Law Museum area for a very tasty lunch...long line, but, it moved very
