ell, here we go folks volume number two! March has been a Whirlwind with Bike Week keeping everyone running. This month’s issue is packed with great photos from all those classic old school spots like the Cabbage Patch and the Iron Horse. We are also very excited to welcome Rogue on board with his great tech tip articles. This month he will be telling us about the Baker attitude chain adjuster and why he thinks it’s better than the automatic primary chain adjusters that comes on the later model Harleys. This is good stuff, we hope that you will enjoy it. As we move into our second month of publication we want to know how you like our magazine. We’re working really hard to get it out to you and when we see you out there we are getting lots of great praise and

compliments. What we need now is a little bit of feedback in written form. Email us at OSB@nnsg.us and let us know what we can do to make the

Retraction: This bike was owned by Carl Yingst, of Richmond, Ind., for 30 years... the only bike he ever owned. It was restored in his memory by Southern Man Cycles, Cocoa, FL. The present owner is Carl’s Uncle, Henry Gross. We are truly sorry for omitting this information in the March issue…

magazine better for you. We are also looking for articles or letters from readers so we can start a letters to the editor section. Another thing we want to start up is a free classifieds section for readers to sell their stuff. So, if you’ve got anything for sale, drop us an email with the details and we will get that classified section started. We hope y’all enjoy this issue of the magazine. Please email us and let us know what you think, again, the email address is OSB@nnsg.us. Until then, look for us at the next event and ride safe. Miserable George, Valgal, and the OSB crew

Tech Tips with Rogue - BAKER ATTITUDE CHAIN ADJUSTER

I

suspect some are going to question why I would remove the automatic primary chain adjuster on my 2009 FLHTC and install one that has to be manually adjusted.

always had a slight whine to it when gearing down. The combination of these things is why I installed the Baker Attitude Chain Adjuster.

I drained the primary fluid while I removed the floorboards, seat, main fuse and the battery ground cable. The way the automatic chain adjuster works is as soon as any slack is noticed in the chain it ratchets up a notch. We know from past experience that the chain gets tighter as it gets hotter from running. If the automatic adjuster ratchets up cold it may make the chain too tight under normal operating conditions. A chain that is too tight will put pressure on one side of the engine and inner primary bearings and has been known to wear them out. Manual adjusters have been used for a long time and require very little maintenance. In my case I had a compensating sprocket go bad with only 30,000 miles on it. Harley replaced it under warrantee. There had been reports of bolts coming loose and other things so I never thought of the chain as being an issue But on the way to Sturgis this year (2012) the inner primary bearing started making noise. I stopped at Klock Works and Jennifer repaired it for me while I did my photo shoot. The motorcycle had 39,476 miles on it. I should note that the motorcycle 6

After removing the outer primary cover I placed a primary drive locking tool between the sprocket teeth. I should mention Do Not use one of the

wedge type locking tools. I then removed the engine sprocket nut, sprocket and chain and the automatic adjuster. Putting the Baker Adjuster in place I added some Blue Thread Lock to the bolts and torqued them to 220 Inch-

lbs. I then installed the compensating sprocket assembly. The factory recommends you replace the engine sprocket bolt every time it is removed as it has a locking agent on the bolt. I opted to clean the bolt on a wire wheel and used Red Thread Lock. I placed the locking tool in the Old School Biker

opposite direction of when removing bolt and Torqued the bolt to 100 Footlbs. Loosen bolt one (1) Full Turn and

filling the primary by using a 60ml syringe and a section of clear tubing. The baby bottle is for measuring

Re-Torque to 140 Foot-lbs. I then adjusted the chain to 5/8”7/8” upward free play. I continued checking the free play at multiple points by rotating the engine and clutch. You can do this by a socket on the engine sprocket bolt and or by raising the tire, putting the motorcycle in gear and rotating the rear tire. In some cases you may want to remove the sparkplugs so engine turns easier. Having a Slightly different measurement at different locations is common But the total adjustment should be in range. Tighten the 3/8 Nylock Nut to 21-29 Foot-lbs. NOTE: If in the future making this adjustment on a hot drivetrain the adjustment is 3/8”-5/8” Install outer primary cover and torque to 108-120 Inch-lbs. Reassemble the rest of the motorcycle with the exception of the passenger floorboard. Remove derby cover and add 45 ounces of primary fluid. Baker

ounces. Install derby cover and torque fasteners to 84-108 Inch-lbs., replace passenger foot peg and test ride

motorcycle. It Works Great and as a Bonus the Whine is gone as well. For more information on this and other fine products check out Bakers website at http://bakerdrivetrain.com/ ROGUE and I re-commend “Spectro”. I have made a very handy tool for Old School Biker

Ride of the Month - Enterprise-Osteen Road by Staff

T

his is one of our favorite rides. I bet I’m going to say that everytime I write one of these. I can’t help it, there’s so many great rides and I love them all. Anyway, make your way to 46 near Sanford and turn north on 415. About a half a mile up, 415 and 415 County split. We like to take a left there and get lunch at Gators Riverside Grill at the Sanford Marina. After lunch we get back on Florida 415 and head north to Reed Ellis Road where School Biker Magazine sent you. They usually have somebody out there on the deck playing guitar on the weekends. It really is a classic Florida spot. Try it out and have fun. Ride safe. we take a left. This will merge with Enterprise Osteen Road which will turn into Lakeshore Drive. The ride along Lake Monroe is awesome. If you haven’t done this run, check it out, we think you’ll like it. If you try out Gators Riverside Grill make sure to tell them that Old

WJWD? It’s not what you think. No matter what your religion, you should know what Jesus would do. We’re not here to talk about politics or religion, well, not much anyway. Try this, what would John Wayne do? WWJWD? now that’s a better question. In this world of political correctness where people actually do the wrong thing because it looks better than it would look to do the right thing. WWJWD means

34

“FUCK YOU THIS IS THE TRUTH, DEAL WITH IT”. What would John Wayne do? He would tell you like it is. he would lay it out there and if you didn’t like it you could kiss his ass. The right thing shouldn’t be a matter of offending people or wording things in the proper way. Right is right, that shouldn’t be a mystery. So when you’re dealing with politically correct assholes, just tell them like it is and if they don’t like it, ask them what would John Wayne do?
