beach. Our Luxury Living home is a highrise condo at Los Corales in the Shores neighborhood of South Padre Island. Right on the beach, the condo is elegantly designed and decorated with a comfortable modern look and a lot of white, off-white, and sand tones. Modern art and the beautiful water from the picture window view of the Gulf of Mexico add the color. Fall is wonderful on the beach, calm seas and light breezes add to the interior tranquility and softness of this luxury home.

“Decorating With” features Rugs and Carpets. Not the stuffy old 70’s concept of wall to wall carpet, in all the same color, that literally smothered your whole home, including the stairs. Not the carpet that slowly pulled off the metal tack strips allowing for the occasional bare footed scream as a heel or toe landed in the wrong place. Instead, today’s options for Rugs and Carpets can almost be considered art: functional art filled with pattern, color, and treat your floors and your feet to some soft

They wisely chose to stay with the building’s architecture and modern style. They started with the entrance to the condo using a simple small console that fits the space perfectly and topped it with a bronze sculpture and beautiful abstract art piece. The tub chairs are upholstered in fabric adding an interesting texture while the round shape contrasts linear designs of the sofas. In addition, the tub chairs conveniently swivel to face either the beach or the sofas for conversation. The cocktail table is straight lined with a modern mix of glass and dark wood and is correctly sized to pull all the seating together into a conversation group. Early in the design process it was apparent that it would not be feasible to undo all the less sympathetic alterations, but a strong desire to recapture much of the original design remained. The renovation budget was judiciously meted out on important upgrades like impact-rated windows, high-insulating roof system, and high efficiency mechanical and plumbing systems, as well as architectural strategies to create Place and Character. Additional Phase One development included the design and construction of a high-end Italian restaurant named after Ms. Wagner’s Sicilian ancestors (Colletti’s) on the south end of the first floor. Colletti’s interior is open to the original structure and building systems, all of which are subdued with a dark ceiling paint. Deep textural materials like dry-stack stone, integral color concrete, and patterned concrete-tile are offset by modern computer-cut scrollwork light-boxes that glow warm vibrant orange and red. What are the advantages of lawn paint? Lawn paint has many advantages. Green grass paint is a great way to quickly improve the curb appeal of a property by giving the property a lush green lawn as opposed to an ugly brown lawn. The lawn dye is harmless to the lawn, pets, and people and dries in less than an hour. The grass paint also lasts up to 12 weeks or until mowed off, and best of all, it does not wash off and requires no watering.

green dye will not last forever, it can buy someone a yard full of green grass for up to 12 weeks. Provided that one does not cut the grass during that time period, that is three whole months! That is often the time needed for a Builder, Agent, Homeowner or reluctant lien holder to sell a property.

A kilim is a flat woven rug. It doesn’t have a pile. It is woven on a loom with a tapestry technique.

A WEAVER’S TECHNIQUE IS SO DISTINCTIVE, THAT THEY MUST WEAVE THE CARPET FROM START TO FINISH.

ends and the thread is linked (like linking arms with another person) with a different color. Another method is to make an about face and continue the thread’s path in the row above. This leaves a small hole in the weaving, so these spots must be staggered throughout the rug. The interwoven threads create a grid. A good contemporary reference is computer pixels. Pixels have to be quite small to create a realistic image or you get jagged square edges. In woven goods this is generally known as thread count. The warp threads have to be finer and closer together, as do CLOCKWISE FROM TOP Hand-tufted rug by Delo

when you visit the workshops and actually see the weavers creating them. A weaver’s technique is so distinctive, that they must weave the carpet from start to finish. It can take a year or more to complete a large rug. If you are looking for contemporary or custom designs that can be created in less time there is another alternative. There is a technique that produces luxurious wool pile carpets and rugs in just a matter of days. Hand-tufted carpets and rugs are made using a hand-operated tool that punches strands of wool into a canvas that has been stretched on a frame. The design is drawn on the canvas and then the pattern is filled in with the appropriate color wool. Once the rug design is fully piled, the rug is removed from the frame and a jute or cotton fabric is glued to the back of the rug. It is fascinating to watch them finish the

in the country. The carpet starts out on an upright loom with the warps tautly strung, but then a different technique is employed. The weaver wraps threads around one or more warp threads and makes a tight knot. They hold a cutting tool in one Designer rugs by Shaw available at Residential Interiors pg 28

hand to cut the threads to the proper pile length.

A similar industrial process called needle tufting is used to create commercial wall-to-wall carpeting. The tufting machine is like a giant sewing machine where 800 to 2,000 needles work together to pull the yarn through. Most tufting machines are about 12 feet wide. This process provides a relatively

Similar standards apply when checking for quality in a commercially produced carpet. More strands of fiber per square inch (density), keeps the pile from being crushed underfoot. You can ascertain just how dense a carpet is by poking your finger into the pile. I tested two different types of carpet in my home. I discovered that one was denser than the other, but I could see the backing on both. When I tested my Hereke rug, I couldn’t even get my finger into the pile. This is one reason they last for centuries. Another factor is the fiber itself. As fibers are spun, they are twisted together into a single thread or yarn. More twist equals more durability. Plying two or more of these yarns together also requires twist and adds another level of strength. Of the synthetic fibers, nylon is considered to be the most durable. Wool is also a durable, green, lowallergenic product that is beautiful. Manufacturers generally provide details about density and twist to consumers at the point of sale. There have been several changes in the design of American homes in the past twenty years. Wood and ceramic flooring are replacing wall-to-wall carpets, and walls are being removed in favor of open living spaces. Living spaces are now being defined by an area rug. Being a fan of rugs, I like this change. My kilims would shift and bunch when they were laid down on carpet, and I noticed that the heavier knotted rugs would do the same. They just work better on hard floors, although small kilims still get kicked up and slide around on hard floors, thus requiring a stabilizing underpad. I have barely scratched the surface when it comes to all the beautiful hand woven rugs that are produced throughout the world. A little information is important when looking for quality rugs and carpets, so keep these tips in mind on your next visit to your local rug and carpet store.
