Box 40101 South Padre Island, TX 78597 Not only do builders and architects remember their best projects, but designers, owners, and even the neighbors remember a house with exceptional enduring qualities. In Our Distinctive Real Estate section, we relay reminiscences on a custom town home at Paradise Point in South Padre Island that is just such a masterpiece. The interior designer, Mary Helle, designed the exterior and interior to showcase the distinctive features of colonial style. Fountains, custom made double entry doors, decorative cantera framing on the windows and doors, stucco walls and octagonal pavers establish an old world character. The interior design combines the formal aesthetic of classic European design with the casualness of island living. The result is a setting of unhurried luxury and unmistakable island character. Read what everyone remembers about this stunning residence. You’ll discover how a local builder brought Texas hill country style and panache to life in the VTX1 office building in Raymondville, TX. The interior decor expresses Texas pride by incorporating iconic items like saddles, cactus, commemorative plaques and flags. This esteemed past is contrasted with a state-of-the-art facility that represents the company’s future. The company makes a statement about its values by building a strong foundation and structure with durable high quality materials. The overall design is responsive to the needs of the company

indsight can be 20/20 but in this case, it is even better. Not only do the builders and architects remember their best projects, but the designers, owners, and even the neighbors remember what went into the house to make it a home, and give it that quality endurance. It is a house that has stood the test of time and is even more valuable than when it was first built. We can look back and remember, ‘Oh yes, that type of construction, this type of material, that brand of tile, these design plans…yes, that’s what has lasted and looks even better now.’ This beautiful bay front town home was a collaboration from start to finish with the owner, designer, and builder. Patrick Nuckols solidly built the trio of town homes that take their place enduringly on Paradise Point in South Padre Island. Mary Helle of Helle’s Fine Furnishings was the designer. From a design scope it was a complete job, from furnishing all interior and exterior appointments down to the choosing of the silverware that completes the classic theme. Because of the quality and beauty, it is irreplaceable and the noble combination gives the home its character.

As you walk into the courtyard of the property, you are met with a warm and welcoming feeling. The fountain greets you with a frolicking splash and as you step toward the custom wooden double entry doors. An antique iron washbasin balances out the walkway and lends to the western European ambience. The octagonal pavers beneath your feet draw your eye throughout the courtyard. When your vision is coupled with the pavers and the three storied façade of stucco that incorporates decorative cantera framing on the windows and doors, you are taken to another place: a place reminiscent of Europe or deep into Mexico where a more relaxed way of living alters your perception of existence into one of gentle and kind summer breezes, solid enduring structures and lasting beauty in surroundings. When you enter the stately wooden front doors, you are welcomed to a grand entry with classic style reminiscent of a gorgeous mansion. A medallion tiled floor and a framed poem with the best wishes of dancing your way through life greet you. Harmoniously, this classic and enduring design behooves you the options of relaxing, ascending the

16 olĂŠ decor WINTER 2013

grand staircase, or being lifted via elevator to your interior domicile destination. The custom-made medallion on the floor is the focal center of the entry and is a stunning piece of artwork that inlays a feel of classy ritz that sets the tone for the rest of the home. A wall of custom cabinetry with art display corroborates the ritz and is juxtaposed from the elevator and stairway. The elevator walls sport a Kravet tree pattern wall covering that adds to the detailed interest. The majestic iron and wood staircase is a wonder in itself with the banister leading one up in curved elegance to the main and third floors. The designer of the home, Mary Helle of Helle’s Fine Furnishings, takes the cake and the credit for this amazing feature staircase. This is a visual and kinesthetic aesthetic of classy endeavor that besets this home with its grace. Fine shutters adorn the windows that illuminate the walls of the stairway making the walking of the stairs a pleasant thoughtinducing journey. This staircase is so incredible. The hardwood stairs, the smooth banister, and the shuttered windows that escort one to the next level are an experience in themselves.

“ It is the most glorious of places. When time, place, effort

and aspiration collide in one brilliant instant. Potential seems realized and imaginations soar. A treasure combining beauty and nature – Paradise Point. ” - Shirley Donahue, Listing Agent

The second floor introduces the main attractions of billiards, a family area with a custom designed entertainment center, and the kitchen with dining onlooking the bay view terrace - all in one connected open space. The ceilings are covered in a raffia fabric that creates an immensely integrated effect. The walls are covered with some of the most luxurious coverings that create lush surroundings of depth and texture and give you a feel that you are on solid terrain, a place where you can settle and call home. At the top of the stairs, one finds again the luxury of space with a landing of solid red oak flooring. To the right, a study with a regal reception bar is a complete vision of masculine romantic style done in a mix of deep reds and dark wood. This room is especially interesting because it has stunning burgundy ostrich fabric lining the walls and the ceilings are covered in a soft taupe suede fabric. To the left, the third floor master bedroom opens to a breathtaking veranda with awe-inspiring views of the bay. The master bath is truly luxurious and houses an amazing stone tile shower that makes one think of a castle with a view.

As described by Shirley Donahue of Sand Dollar Realty “Even with all these homey comforts, the principal attraction remains the views of the Laguna Madre Bay, best seen from the 3rd floor balcony – you just say ‘Whoa’.” Whether it is a glance or a gaze, one just can’t help but appreciate the bayside view. Incredible sunsets, tropical waters, and breezy island weather would make anyone want to dance. And, when you live on the bay, this can be the sunset lifestyle you always knew was possible.

ith the age of technology speeding us quickly through the first and second decades of the millennium, we may sometimes stop to ponder how all this communication is made possible. Well, thanks to the hard working folks at VTX1 Communications, LLC Corporate Headquarters in Raymondville, TX, we have our answer: at least in part. The brand new building built by Will Haraway, is a genuinely beautiful example of how surroundings can make a difference in how we feel about our work and how well designed spaces can boost productivity levels. This magnificent facility, that is just under 15,000 square feet, supports the functions of Finance, Marketing, Human Resources, Training, Executive offices, Customer Service and more for VTX1 Communications. When you step inside, you get the feel that it’s more than just a business; it’s also a community and communications training center

30 olé decor WINTER 2013

with a step up into the dynamics of life and work styles. Mrs. Marilyn Osborn, who helped in the décor process, guided us on a tour filling in details about how and why each design was implemented for each segment of the facility. She explained how it was designed for individual departments with consideration for how they function. When I asked for Marilyn’s synopsis of the décor/design, she replied “Southwestern with an eye to the future.” Southwestern it is. Nestled into the mesquite and live oak in an almost ranch-like setting, the backdrop of this building’s location is iconic Texas topography. The natural stone and custom landscaped exterior gives one the laid back feeling of arriving at a five-star retreat in the hill country. This was no ordinary building and no ordinary project. Cactus with rock ground cover that is set in Texas-wide proportion along the walkways express the beauty of south Texas in an artistic

presentation. It is a well-chosen design for the exterior and it is as welcoming on the outside as on the inside. Inside, the high ceilings and solidly natural and beautiful materials give a Texas welcome to the communication industry and guests. Windows framed with brushed steel and rugged, yet softly textured stone comprise the structure of exterior and interior walls. The structure is sound and the windows are hurricane resistant. Wooden furnishings and Texas flags and plaques give a historical and honoring esteem to the welcoming reception area. If coming to take care of business, the wide open area and welcoming surroundings make you feel as though you are a guest instead of just a customer. The adjacent drive-thru payment center is convenient and easily accessible to receive customers: a nice alternative during inclement weather or the summer heat.

Just down the hall and centrally located, is a lunch and break room dedicated to hard-working employees who may at times need to be working long shifts. When it’s break time or lunch time, vending machines stand service ready with an appetizing assortment. Two microwaves were installed to be available for time-sensitivity reasons. Ample refrigerator space and a full kitchen accommodate training groups, employees, and the community when needed. Indoor tables overlook the courtyard with an alluring view of the southwestern Texas sky and landscape. There is a pleasant outdoor seating area that looks out into the countryside, providing a rejuvenating balance between work and surroundings. There is also a training facility purpose in the building for which a classroom was designed. The training classroom has the feel of enduring quality. State of the art audio-visual equipment, a big screen, and a group centered u-shape table

configuration are conducive to learning. The windows (hurricane proof throughout) have clean lined blinds that offer benefits whether open or closed. When open, the lovely scenic courtyard is in view and when closed, visual presentations are easier on the eye. The room is large enough to accommodate an average classroom sized group in comfort and to encourage the learning objective of the room. Offices line the wide hallways, and an open space on the east side of the building denotes the financial wing. Cubicles are spacious with large walkways in between. A mid-section copy center has counter space for laying out more than one project at a time. A financial conference room that is an integral part of team coordination was being used by VTX1 staff even as we walked by. Offices are endowed by function, many with granite tables for management meetings that are part of the lux materials the hardworking staff is appreciative to utilize. The materials used for production spaces were part of the design as well. Mr. John Bradford, Director of Business Development at VTX1 Communications, said

32 olé decor WINTER 2013

that productivity has gone up in the new building. Before they were crowded and now with the advantage of space everything just flows better. The overall larger space and design has allowed the staff to breathe. Down another impressive hallway, the communications department takes its place in the functional layout of the east wing. An open space again provides a comfortable production area with an eye out for the team coordination of this segment of the business. Offices once again line the hallways of this east wing and peaceful employees remain attentive to their tasks as the layout permits such flow. The design of the executive conference room at the end of the hallway is one of great detail to give rise to the forward movement of the technology industry. There is an impressive granite oblong table that houses an audio-visual tech station. Electrical outlets pop up when needed and can be retracted flush with the table surface when not in use. Distance conferencing and training is now possible for meeting with other communications executives and staff across the state, the country, or the world.

The conference room décor is complete with plush chairs and a smooth wooden flooring underlayment for accessibility and ease of movement. The space has all the amenities: a refrigerator, serving cabinetry with storage, and a private restroom. The big screen and audio/video capabilities again are the highlighted showpieces of the design of the space. Colleagues from another location can view the entire room and join in the meeting from anywhere with reciprocal technology as though everyone were attending the same meeting. The CEO’s office has a San Antonio laid back hill country style that fits incredibly well here in South Texas and makes you feel at home. The décor includes a full-size saddle, an amazing metal sculptured cactus lamp, and beautifully lighted open cabinetry that was custom made to fit the theme of the office. Technology is moving forward at high-speed here in south Texas, but that doesn’t mean we have forgotten our roots. We still know where we are on the planet and welcome you with a smile and some comfort. And, if you get us on the right day, some pancakes hot off the griddle.

DRIVE WAY It is a space for free parking, but the driveway is the connecting path to your home and its design and asthetic can be a reflection of the destination it’s leading you to. Written by Eddie Reyes

36 olĂŠ decor WINTER 2013

Planning Never underestimate the importance of a wellplanned driveway. Done right, it should be wide enough to navigate, strong enough to withstand occasional delivery trucks, and graded so water slides off like rain from a roof. A good driveway also compliments the house and is a pleasure to walk on. Start by planning the route from the road to the garage thoughtfully. A curve or two takes up more land but lends grace. Drives should be at least 10 to 12 feet wide at straight runs and 14 feet wide at curves. If the drive is long, provide a 12-by-18foot (or larger) space at the top for turning around; this can double as guest parking. Prevent puddling by angling the paved surface slightly downhill. Or create a crown: The center of the drive is built up so water flows down the sides into the soil or drainage channels. A drive that’s too steep is slippery and dangerous. Never exceed a rise of 15 feet per 100 feet of distance (a slope of 15 percent). Lastly, material should fit the character of the house and the landscape depending on where you live.

Finishes When it comes to choices in driveway materials, it’s clear that plain, gray concrete isn’t always first. Now, homeowners are matching their driveways to their homes. Pavers, bricks natural stone, rocks, staining and stamping are some of the most popular finishes. Decorative driveways have become a standard feature in upscale Valley homes. More people also are choosing them when upgrading concrete driveways of older homes. Charming and eyecatching, these driveways often resemble the cobblestone streets of Europe. They also lend a sense of permanence to the Valley’s newly built neighborhoods and homes, giving them a graceful patina that usually comes only with age.

Concrete Pavers A popular alternative to plain concrete, these pavers come in a variety of colors, sizes and shapes. They’re also an inexpensive option, costing $2 to $4 per paver uninstalled and $5.50 to $8 installed, and can easily be installed by homeowners or professionals. Ordinary concrete driveways require several days of curing time; pavers can be used right away.

WINTER 2013

olé decor 37

Keep in mind steep grades and borders increase the installation cost. Pavers generally don’t crack or chip, and if they get stained with oil, they can be popped out and replaced. If pavers are sealed, the sealant needs to be reapplied every seven years or so.

Stamped Concrete Poured concrete can be stamped in any design imaginable from pavers, to shells, to wood planks, or any pattern you can think of. The concrete used in this process is a bit thinner than normal concrete. Standard concrete usually has some large stones in it, but for proper stamping, the concrete is filtered to be much smoother. Consistency is an everimportant factor with concrete stamping of shapes and sizes. Stiff concrete isn’t soft enough to mold, but weak concrete doesn’t hold its shape. When it’s mixed and cured correctly, stamped concrete is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to surface you driveway.

Pavers These stones can be assembled in a variety of patterns and are available tumbled or not tumbled. Tumbling removes sharp edges and gives the pavers an aged look. When installed, pavers usually are set into a compacted aggregate base that is topped with

38 olé decor WINTER 2013

sand. They can be sealed, a process that enhances the color. Some companies even sells pavers reclaimed from Mexican and Israeli streets.

Faux stone This concrete product is made to look like stone. Other companies search for ancient and antique stone from renovated sites in Europe. Exquisite pieces are selected for reproduction and molds are created from the original. The finished product is virtually indistinguishable from original stone. Then these interlocking driveway stones are modeled after 16th-century cobblestones found in Provence, France.

Rock & Gravel Large driveways are much cheaper to outfit in gravel than any other material, though you do have to top-dress every couple of years to keep gravel looking nice. They are also much easier to maintain by simply adding gravel periodically. It is much quicker than sealing an asphalt driveway and doesn’t require special tools. It’s permeable, and when gravel is installed properly, rainwater will penetrate directly into the earth, replenishing groundwater.

Large driveways are much cheaper to outfit in gravel than any other material, though you do have to top-dress every couple of years to keep gravel looking nice.

Staining Another method for changing the appearance of your driveway is by coloring the concrete through chemical stains. They penetrate the concrete surface to create beautiful color tones in concrete. Stains react directly with the concrete’s minerals and produce uneven, mottled, and variegated color effects. Chemical stains can be used for both interior and exterior applications and are often used on concrete that has already been colored integrally or with the dry shake method. So there you have it, the possibilities for your driveway are only limited by imagination or in some cases your bank account. Considering that your driveway is usually your guests’ and familie’s first point of contact to your home and property, I think it’s only deserved that you give that old, cracked, oil stained, gray slab a second look.
