a caveat Most of the roles I have been involved in over the past five years have related to my education. For example, societies at Cambridge, only employ committee members for a year before new members are elected. This, however, provides a unique opportunity to explore varying roles and experiences over my time in education. Nevertheless, some have stuck with the theme of both designer and graphic designer being a heavy component of my recent years.

Dartford Town Hall BREAD & CIRCUSES
01
year 2015 - 2016: in progress location Cambridge With the arrival of Crossrail at Dartford within the near future, this town hall is designed to deal with an increasing population and changing demographic within the local population. The focus is on a central food market with restaurant menus created from market bought products. However, this is also a central and, more importantly, public, debate and event location, among the small surrounding volumes. With a smaller percentage of the space dedicated to the private workings of the council, more area is given over to publicly accessible areas. This hopefully promotes the appropriation of more public spaces for traditionally more private activities. 6
7
iterations | concept | roof plans discussing what it means to stumble upon a debate The volumes of the space orientate themselves around a central street. The hope is that those who use one element of the site, be it the cafe, the one stop shop, or the offices, will then stumble upon other uses and other activities happening in the site. 8

Dissertation RECONSTRUCTING SYRIA
02
year 2015 - 2016 location Cambridge This research examines how heritage practices differed within conflict zones since World War II in an effort to assemble a series of questions to be asked by those looking to rebuild Aleppo in Syria, when the ongoing Syrian conflict eventually subsides. An examination of the exact reconstruction of the Old Town of Warsaw considers the feasibility of reconstructing Aleppo in a similar method when it has only just emerged from such a period. The case of Mostar discusses letting a monument stand for a divided city, and whether the involvement of the international community produces a useful result. Beirut, and the study of Solidere, then explores issues with large scale developments and what constitutes well designed architecture in a post-conflict period. 10

King’s Cross ACOUSTIC MUSIC SCHOOL 03 year 2014 - 2015 location Cambridge The ongoing development at the King’s Cross site in London, provides opportunities for new interactions and thresholds to be created and explored. One of the these is situated in the North-east corner of the site where the residential communitu meets the high-rise student accomodation. This project involved working between two scales to provide a bridge that welcome the community but was also attractive for the redevelopment. The project invites in King’s Cross through it’s main entrance, whilst the school provides an accessible entrance to the community. The two interact through a series of circulation routes around a central void where the sounds of the school can mix beneath the main auditorium, situated at the top of the slanted roof. The building is designed to reach up and grab the light. 12
Concept images The first is promoting the idea of grabbing back the light stolen from the site by the Rubicon building and defines part of the reasoning around the shape of my building. The second image is about this two pronged attack on the development as the building grows up from the residential area towards the development. Project 2

King’s Cross ROCKCLIMBING 04 year 2014 - 2015 location Cambridge On the South-east side of the King’s Cross Development, a small site mediates between the river and the highrise Guardian building. In order to make the most of this reaction, the rockclimbing centre features a central pool in which climbers can fall, negating the need for harnesses. The infinity effect appears as if the pool is part of the canal thus integrating the surrounding context. On the oher side, a glazed facade mirrors that of the opposing commerical buildings. At night the ‘cave’ inside glows through this facade, illuminating the street and the canal. 16

Cambridge MAPPING THE FACADES
05
year 2013 - 2014 location Cambridge Named ‘Behind the Facade’, this project looks at the first record of buildings on the high-street, and then mapping how these facades fit together by detailing their design and age. This was in a move to get people to look up, by creating a series of installation and artworks, including an app, that made people realise that the building was far more than what was just in the retail units in front of them. 21

Tottenham HOLY TRINITY CHURCH
06
a
year 2013 - 2014 location Cambridge b The generation of a church’s community space created an opportunity to play with flexibility in space, to create, essentially, three glazed boxes that interacted with each other through a series of large opening doors, creating a large, and varied range of spaces. This changed how the church was viewed, whether it be from the edge of the park on which the church was sat, or from the accessible top of these box, where the details of the church’s facade could be appreciated 22

The units are all on the same level as the green. So by swinging open the large glass doors the units can be joined together, changing their function and how the site interacts with the green. By blocking access points and changing room spaces the church can go from being completely open to completely private, and anywhere in between. However, there is a clear distinction between the green and the internal courtyard garden space to enable the congregation to claim their own space This is the first development of the usable roof space, seen above in this render.

2016 Cambridge: collaboration project
A three day project led to the masterplanning of the retail park to the east of Cambridge’s city centre. With the intention to relocate the city’s stadium, we took into account it’s current popularity before putting together a staged plan, the first of which is shown above, with the moving of the stadium into the site without interrupting the current use of the retail park. A ring of retail immediately around the stadium mediates between the busy main road and the game insides with the intention of changing the retail experience of a football game, where diners can sit and watch live games from the restaurants around the stadium. 26

Cambridge THE SUSTAINABLE CITY year location
08
2015 Cambridge: collaboration project
Although this project was intended to be a study on the overall strategies of reducing energy, water and waste within the city of Cambridge and how the urban environment can change to meet new demands, it quickly became very realistic, in the fact that, Cambridge, being the historic centre it is, is unable to change. Thus, the people must change for it. Less about the urban environment, more about promoting change and the consequence of not doing so, this was a project about communication and publicity rather than infrastructure and energy-saving lightbulbs. 28

Cambridge FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM year location
09
2015 Cambridge: collaboration project
Working with the engineering department across the road, the redesign of the roof of the Fitzwilliam Museum assessed feasibility and practicality, as well as aesthetic appeal. The chance to work with engineers on this allowed a rigorous assessment of everything we were designing, and another critical eye, along with the clients, to help us hone our argument, and keep a clear design strategy. 30
31
Arcsoc PUBLICITY ROLE year location
10
2015 - 2016 Cambridge: collaborative
Arcsoc is Cambridge’s Architecture society, helping us raise money for our end of year exhibition in London. As such, we are known for the best parties, life drawing classes and talks in Cambridge. Each year, a new committee is elected, and for 2015-2016, I am part of the publicity and sponsorship team, which involves everything from improving the profile of our society to creating our end of year exhibition catalogues for the whole department. It helps to bring together all five years working in the department. 32
33
Arcsoc PAVILIONS year location
11
2015 Cambridge: collaboration project
Each our events within Arcsoc also provides a unique opportunity for the architects to create pavilions situated outside each of our venues to entice the crowds as they wait in the queue. These involve a mini design project and then a chance to build it all 1:1. Each runs with the theme of the event, and have also included collaborations with the local homelesss charity: WinterComfort to help raise money for the numerous homeless people around the city centre by creating a portable busker’s stage 34
35
Arcsoc GRAPHIC DESIGN 12 year 2014 - 2015 location Cambridge Arcsoc also puts on a range of films and talks which are of interest to the entire student body. These require a unique design to fit in line with the society’s graphic style and further publicity to push the event. Each film is chosen by recommendation from tutors or lecturers. 36

Event CHRIST’S MAY BALL 13 year 2015 - 2016 location Cambridge: Head of Design At the end of each year, every college puts on a May Ball or June Event which is the work of a committee of students through the year. This year I am the Head of Design for the may ball with 1400 guests. This role assumes responsibility over the entire aesthetic and theme of the event, involving everything from the initial theme choice, to the creation of publicity material, posters and tickets etc, and then to the building and decoration of stages, projection mapping, lighting and of course, budget control. It also allows me to hand-pick my team for this year’s event. The event will be helf on the 14th June, 2016.

Event KING’S AFFAIR 2015
14
year 2014 - 2015 location Cambridge: Deputy head of Design King’s Affair typically rejects the idea of a may ball in favour of an all-out fancy dress party. The budget here is much lower than Christ’s but provides an opportunity for more hands-on artwork and DIY decorations. This is where I learnt the basics of projection mapping in order to avoid the astronomical costs of out-sourcing the tasks. 5 star reviews all round. 40

Event CHRIST’S MAY BALL
15
year 2013 - 2014 location Cambridge: Design team member Being my first year at university, I was brought into the design process quite late, so most of the work here involved on the night set-up, sorting out the lighting, partly above, and ensuring the ideas of those in-charge came to fruition, even if this meant sticking down a ‘yellow brick road’ as guests started to enter into the event. 42

Event KING’S AFFAIR 2014 16 year 2013 - 2014 location Cambridge: Design team member As part of the design team, I was left in charge of a number of spaces, which included the building of a, surprisingly strong cardboard box cave, through which people could enter the event. It also meant control over some of the lighting and graphics shown to the right, and provided a stepping stone into the bigger roles of the later years. 44
45
Graphics LAW SOCIETY 17 year 2013 - 2015 location Cambridge The Cambridge Law Society is a well-funded institution run by the student body. They have an endless range of events going on through the year which are now free to members due to the considerable amount of sponsorship they receive. Each event requires promotional material, posters, cover photos for Facebook, and tickets in order to promote the event to non-law students. 46
47
Graphics CHRIST’S FILMS 18 year 2013 - 2016 location Cambridge A self-funded society, the promotion of each event is key to making the society break even and continue to offer a variety of showings. My method of working involved redesigning the original posters to show a different aspect the films in order to garner attention and public interest. The society has recently been taking off with five out of eight of the term’s showings selling out. 48
49
Graphics AMATEUR DRAMATICS CLUB 19 year 2013 - 2016 location Cambridge I have worked with several productions at the ADC in Cambridge to produce posters, programmes, leaflets and other variety of material to aid their productions. Several times, these works have gone on to be used at the Edinborough and Brighton comedy fringe, having worked with people who have become notably known. I have also been involved in photography and the creation of media for rehearsals, live performances, and other dramatic events. 50

Graphics BIRMINGHAM HANDBALL 20 year 2014 location Cambridge At the request of a friend, this was the production of a logo and visual material for a newly formed Handball team. The two lions and chosen colours represent the university, and this can currently be seen on all their kit. This was the winner of a short, quite friendly, design competition, 52
53
Graphics CHRIST’S EVENTS 21 year 2014 - 2015 location Cambridge For a year, I was the in-house designer for all the events that happened within my college, which included basic publicity work to drum up support and get people away from studying for a night. This included working with a very demanding but decisive events organiser 54

Personal AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHY 22 year Forever location Various Photography and travel have always been a passion of mine, and now with architecture involved, there is always the challenge to try and photograph a building or a space in the best light. At Cambridge, this passion has rolled into event photography, with trying to capture the theme of the event within each image being the main challenge. 56
