Crown of Thorns The Crown of Thorns, which is displayed at the front of the Sanctuary, represents the last weeks of Jesus’ life here on earth. The thorns represent the suffering that Jesus went through for us. The seven candles represent the last seven weeks of His life. All the candles are lit. On the first Sunday in Lent, one candle is extinguished. This procedure is followed until the last candle is extinguished at our Good Friday lovefeast. The extinguishing of candles usually takes place at the end of the service by a senior person, as one who is in the twilight of life. On Easter Sunday, there is a new wreath of spring flowers with the Christ Candle burning before and during the service. No one extinguishes the candle during the service. This represents the everlasting light of Jesus in this world. February Missions Project – Next Sunday The February Missions Project will be at 6 PM, next Sunday, February 21st, for a time of worship and fellowship at the Forsyth Prison Ministries, a minimum security prison, 307 Craft Drive in Winston-Salem. Salem’s 250

th

The year 2016 offers us opportunity to celebrate a special occasion in the life of the Moravian Church, Southern Province — the 250th anniversary of Salem. Indeed, by extension it is also the 250th anniversary of the city of Winston-Salem as well as the church community that grew to be Home Moravian Church and Salem Congregation of Moravian churches — Ardmore, Bethesda, Calvary, Christ, Fairview, Fries Memorial, Home, Immanuel New Eden, Konnoak Hills, Messiah, Pine Chapel, St. Philips, and Trinity. Even in 1753, when we purchased 100,000 acres — almost the entirety of today’s Winston-Salem — in colonial North Carolina, church leaders in London had envisioned a business and administrative city in its center. That site was finally selected on February 14, 1765, with the Daily Text reading: “Let thine eye be opened toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which thou hast said, My name shall be there” (1 Kings 8:29). Work on the new town began the next year, 1766, with the felling of the first trees on Epiphany, January 6. The Text for that day was auspicious: “I will defend this city” (Isa. 37:35). Then on February 19, 1766, eight Single Brethren moved from Bethabara to occupy the builders’ cabin and become the first permanent residents of Salem. Events quickly followed as the new town was carved out of wilderness: 

 

February 20: A preliminary survey is made for Salem Square, the heart around which the town’s principal buildings would be constructed — Brothers House, Gemein Haus, Community Store, Sisters House, Boys School, church, Girls Boarding School. June 6: The foundation stone for Salem’s First House is laid on Main Street. August 18: For the first time Moravian Sisters visit Salem from Bethabara, and while they are there the first lovefeast in Salem is held in the partially completed First House.

October 10: The First House is far enough along that Br. Gottfried Praezel sets up his loom inside, which marks the beginning of industry in the city of Winston-Salem.

A number of events are being planned for the 250th. Some are tentative, so it is wise to check with sponsoring organizations to confirm dates and times:  

    

 

February 19: Walk from Bethabara to Salem commemorating eight Single Brethren’s move to Salem. Sponsored by Old Salem Museums & Gardens. February 19: Illumination of the Builders’ House site at dusk by University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Sponsored by Old Salem Museums & Gardens. (Rescheduled from January 6.) March 10: “Salem’s 250th in Music.” “Lunchtime Lectures” series. July 4: First Fourth of July, 1783: “Psalm of Joy” concert & lovefeast. Sponsored by Old Salem Museums & Gardens and Moravian Music Foundation. July 16: George Hamilton IV Music Festival 4-8 p.m. in Salem Tavern meadow. Sponsored by Old Salem Museums & Gardens. August 10-14: Illumination of Salem Square at dusk by University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Sponsored by Old Salem Museums & Gardens. August 13: Community Day in Salem, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Sponsored by Old Salem Museums & Gardens. Worship services and mini-recitals at 10, 12, 2, 4 at Home Moravian Church. August 14: Children’s Festival in Salem, 2-6 p.m. Sponsored by the Moravian Church. November 6: Moramus Chorale/Moravian Music Foundation anniversary concert featuring Salem composers.
