*If you are able, please stand. A Cordial Welcome is extended to all who worship today at Olivet Moravian Church. If you are looking for a church home, we hope you will consider becoming a part of our church. If you would like to join our church, please call the church office at 924-8063. Before the service speak to the Lord; during the service let the Lord speak to you; and after the service speak to one another. This morning we celebrate Holy Communion in observance of the First Sunday in Lent. Moravians practice open communion. All are invited to partake together after the pastor and acolytes have served you in the pew. We hope you experience God’s blessing in your time with us today and throughout this week. We also hope you will return and worship with us again. Chancel Flowers The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in honor of my son, Grayson Comer’s birthday tomorrow by Beth Adams.

Crown of Thorns The Crown of Thorns, which is displayed at the front of the Sanctuary, represents the last weeks of Jesus’ life here on earth. The thorns represent the suffering that Jesus went through for us. The seven candles represent the last seven weeks of His life. All the candles are lit. On the first Sunday in Lent, one candle is extinguished. This procedure is followed until the last candle is extinguished at our Good Friday lovefeast. The extinguishing of candles usually takes place at the end of the service by a senior person, as one who is in the twilight of life. On Easter Sunday, there is a new wreath of spring flowers with the Christ Candle burning before and during the service. No one extinguishes the candle during the service. This represents the everlasting light of Jesus in this world. Safe Sanctuary Screenings – Today Due to Provincial directives, each congregation in the Southern Province has been charged with implementing a Safe Sanctuary Policy. This policy ensures the safety of children, youth and vulnerable adults in our congregation. As part of the Safe Sanctuary Policy, anyone who works with children/youth (other than Provincial employees and those who already had a screening in order to work at Laurel Ridge) will need to have a screening. This includes all Nursery volunteers, Children’s Church volunteers, Sunday School Teachers, Youth Workers, Youth Choir/Handbell Directors…anyone who works with kids. Unfortunately, the results of screenings that school teachers have already done are not available to us, so we must do another one. Gary Stilley will be here today after the worship service to conduct the Safe Sanctuary Screenings. Gary coming to Olivet will save everyone from going downtown to have their screening. Any questions, please contact Evie Blum Day of Prayer – This Wednesday The Day of Prayer Service is this Wednesday, March 8th, at Trinity Moravian Church and Dr. Debbie Norris Lanier will be the speaker. Meet at church at 9:45 AM if you want to carpool. Please sign up on the Senior Friends’ Bulletin Board.
March Newsletters Are Available March newsletters are available for those who pick up their newsletter at the church. They are in your mailboxes located across from the History Room. Turn Clocks Forward – This Saturday, March 11th Before you go to bed this Saturday Night, March 11th, turn your clocks forward one hour, as Daylight Savings Time will begin. Special Unity Offering – Next Sunday March 1, 2017 was the 560th anniversary of the founding of the Unitas Fratrum – now over one million members strong in work and witness for Christ around the world! Each year around our denomination’s anniversary date we receive a special Unity Offering for a cause in the Moravian Church. This year’s offering is designated for support of the 2017 Unity Mission Conference, November 15-20, 2017, in Cape Town, South Africa. Special offering envelopes will be available next Sunday for this offering. We hope you will prayerfully consider what you can give to this worthy cause. Senior Friends – Wednesday, March 15th The Senior Friends will go as a group to the Day of Prayer service on Wednesday, March 15th at Ardmore Moravian Church. Dr. Robert Shackleford will be speaking. We need your help with food items. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the Narthex in the weeks to come.
