For Moravian Music Sunday we’re celebrating Olivet’s participation in Moravian music over the years: “For God So Loved the World” is a setting of John 3:16 by Johannes Herbst (1735-1812) who died in Salem just months after he was consecrated bishop in Lititz, PA. This was edited and translated by Dave Blum from manuscripts of the Herbst and Dover (Ohio) Congregation collections. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was, of course, not a Moravian; but you may recognize the tune of “Wounded Lamb! By Your Self-Offering” as his Ave Verum Corpus. The text was written (in German) by an anonymous 18th century Moravian, and translated by Nola Knouse and Daniel Crews. While the edition was prepared for the Piedmont Chamber Singers, the Chancel Choir and congregation of Olivet Moravian Church sponsored its publication in memory of Denny Fordham, who served as Director of Music at Olivet from 1986 to 2006. “Renew This Congregation, Lord” is a text by Margaret Higgins set to a tune by former Director of the Moravian Music Foundation, James Boeringer. It was written for the dedication of the sanctuary at Olivet in 1989. The benediction today is “May the Grace of Christ Our Savior,” using a text by John Newton (of Amazing Grace fame) set to a hymn tune written earlier this year by Dave Blum.

STATEMENT ON MORAVIAN MUSIC SUNDAY PRESENTATION OF MORAVIAN MUSIC 50-YEAR PINS
Today, we thank God for the gift of music, a heart-felt expression of the love, comfort, and covenant we share. Music joins our hearts in Christian unity and calls us to charity. For Moravians, music helps us express the meaning of words with all our hearts; and words provide true meaning and purpose to the beauty and energy of the music. Can you speak the words of your favorite hymn without hearing the melody and harmony? Can you hum or hear the band play that tune without thinking of the words? For 67 years now, Moravians have held “Moravian Music Festivals” every few years to celebrate the importance of music in our lives and in our faith – past, present, and future. When we hold a “Moravian Music Festival” or celebrate the gifts of Moravian music, we’re not just “tooting our own horn” – we are honoring one of the very real gifts that God has given to the Moravian Church.
Each Moravian Music Festival, beginning with the very first one in Bethlehem, PA, in 1950, is an opportunity for participants and listeners to learn music you haven’t before experienced; to form new bonds with brothers and sisters around the world, and to rekindle old friendships; and to worship the Lord who is himself our Song of songs. The 25th Moravian Music Festival will be in Winston-Salem, NC, July 23-29, 2017. Musical activities are planned for all ages, kindergarten through adult. Some travel subsidies are available for those from the Western and Canadian Districts, and some scholarships are available for young people. Please visit our website, www.MoravianMusicFestival.org, for more information! Moravian Music Festivals are not only for “professional” or “trained” musicians; they’re for anyone who loves music and wants to enjoy fellowship, worship, and music together!

Liturgy for Moravian Music Sunday O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise! Mit Freuden Zart Sing praise to God who reigns above, The God of all creation, The God of power, the God of love, The God of our salvation. My soul with comfort rich He fills, And every grief He gently stills: To God all praise and glory! Let us give thanks to the Father, who has enabled us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. In Him all things in heaven and on earth were created. He Himself is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. Let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, to which indeed we were called in the one body. Above all, may we clothe ourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

Most gracious God, we give you thanks for every good gift. On this day we especially thank you for your creative gifts to us, which cause us to enrich our lives through science and art, literature and drama, words and music. Today
Inspire and bless those who write and compose, those who play instruments and those who sing, and those who lead and teach. As you have helped us through the centuries to sing our faith, so move within each one of us today, that all our gifts may unite in your service. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant us to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Jesus Christ. In whose holy name we pray. Amen. 185 A Lamb of God, you shall remain forever Of our songs the only theme; For your boundless love, your grace and favor, We will praise your saving name; That for our transgressions you were wounded Shall by us in nobler strains be sounded, When we, perfected in love, Once shall join the church above.

Come, let us sing the song of songs, With hearts and voices swell the strain, The homage which to Christ belongs: “Worthy the Lamb, for He was slain!”
Highly favored congregation, Loved by Jesus and esteemed, Ne’er forget your destination, Why from this vain world redeemed.
Slain to redeem us by His blood, To cleanse from ev’ry sinful stain, And make us kings and priests to God; “Worthy the Lamb, for He was slain!”
Grounded on your Savior’s merit, Blessed in His communion sweet, Destined heaven to inherit, And the church above to meet.
To Him who suffered on the tree Our souls, at His soul’s price to gain, Blessing, and praise, and glory be, “Worthy the Lamb, for He was slain!”
Witness here to all around you Of your savior’s dying love; Tell them how He sought and found you, Gave you grace from heav’n above.
To Him, enthroned by filial right, All pow’r in heav’n and earth proclaim, Honor, and majesty, and might; “Worthy the Lamb, for He was slain!”
Evidence by word and action That your faith is not in vain, That your highest satisfaction Centers in the Lamb once slain.
Long as we live, and when we die, And while in heaven with Him we reign, This song, our song of songs shall be: “Worthy the Lamb, for He was slain!” CHORAL BENEDICTION May the Grace of Christ Our Savior String Quartet & Chancel Choir

168 A Make my calling and election, Jesus, ev’ry day more sure; Keep me under your direction, Till I, through almighty pow’r, Unto endless glory raised In your mansions shall be placed. When in you I end my race, Weeping shall forever cease.

SINGSTUNDE Amen, yea, my lasting praises, Jesus, unto you are giv’n, That a place by you prepared Is for me secured in heavn, Blessed my case, O truly blessed, When to heav’nly glory raised, I from pain and sorrow free In your presence safe shall be.
Singstunde is a German word meaning literally “singing hour.” It was originated in Herrnhut by Count Zinzendorf in the early 1700’s. On such an occasion Scripture was read and then appropriate hymns were sung to express the truths taught in the Scripture. No sermon or address was given, because the message was brought forth by the words in the hymns. It has often been said that Moravians sing our faith and that our theology is best expressed in our hymns. 14 Bb Hail, Alpha and Omega, hail, O Author of our faith, The Finisher of all our hopes, The Truth, the Life, the Path. Hail, First and Last, the great I Am, In whom we live and move; Increase our little spark of faith, And fill our hearts with love. O let that faith which you have taught Be treasured in our breast, The evidence of unseen joys, The substance of our rest. Then shall we go from strength to strength, From grace to greater grace, From each degree of faith to more, Till we behold your face.

‘Tis the most blessed and needful part To have in Christ a share, And to commit our way and heart Unto His faithful care; This done, our steps are safe and sure, Our hearts’ desires are rendered pure, And naught can pluck us from His hand, Which leads us to the end. My lasting joy and comfort here Is Jesus’ death and blood; I with this passport can appear Before the throne of God. Admitted to the realms above, I then shall see the Christ I love, Where countless pardoned sinners meet Adoring at His feet.
