EVAN WALKER BRIDGE

IVY ARCH HOTEL

Inspiration The hotel’s design is inspired by the Evan Walker Bridge, located a couple of blocks from the site. The main take away from the bridge is the man-made elements contrasting the natural elements. Ivy Arch Hotel captures this through materiality, forms, fixtures, and feature pieces.

CONCEPT & PROCESS

Concept Statement Inspired by the Evan Walker Bridge located on the Yarra River, a couple of blocks away from the hotel’s site, the hotel focuses on the contrast of man-made and natural elements. The bridge has its own contrasting feature of the natural arch and the rigid triangle, although the layout of the hotel is based off of the Yarra River intersecting the bridge. The contrasting elements are seen throughout the space in numerous ways and incorporating the natural elements helps amplify biophilic design.

HOTEL SPACES

Biophilic & Wellness Considerations Natural Materials: Use of reclaimed driftwood, marble, and living plants Curved Forms: The reception desk and ceiling feature curve instead of having a harsh corner. Movement: Located right across from the reception is a monumental staircase to promote guests to use the stairs instead of the elevator Daylight: Reception is located next to the atrium that provides daylight throughout the hotel

Atrium

Atrium The full-height atrium allows daylight to flood onto each floor. It offers guests views of the Yarra River regardless of what floor or room they are staying in. The shell of the atrium symbolizes the man-made element of this space, while the materials, furniture selection, and the lighting feature piece provide the natural elements. The feature piece mimics the natural form of the arch from the Evan Walker Bridge and it draws guests eyes throughout the whole atrium.

Restaurant

Restaurant This restaurant is open to both the public and hotel guests. It has a fresh and bright atmosphere with a visual connection to the atrium to prompt outside patrons to become future guests at Ivy Arch Hotel. Biophilic design is present in the restaurant through natural and locally sourced materials, plenty of daylight, living plants, and views of the Yarra River.

Wellness Amenities All the amenities in Ivy Arch exemplify health and wellness elements. The fitness center promotes movement within guests, while the gaming center encourages socialization and relaxation. The spa offers services that benefit the guest’s physical and mental health. Each amenity can be seen through the atrium which encourages guests to use them to better their health.

FINISHES & FURNITURE

Material Selection

All finishes were inspired by man-made and natural elements. Concrete and metal are the main man-made materials that are seen throughout the hotel. Reclaimed wood, marble, leather, and plants are used to soften up the space and connect the guests to nature.
