Coworking Office DIRTT Partnership 5 weeks - Fall 2018 Revit, Photoshop

The Olympic National Park’s three ecosystems were used as inspiration for each of the spaces in this building. The co-working space was based off the rugged coastlines, the cafe was inspired by the glaciated mountains, and the courtyard mimicked the temperate forests. The co-working area includes “drop-in” benching, private offices, and offices for a tech company. Each space used different DIRTT walls to provide different types of privacy which catered to the different work styles of clients.

The cafe was designed to simulate the cold atmosphere of the glaciated mountains, so materials such as brick, concrete, and stainless steel were used to reflect this. However, the use of wood was used on the base of the counters and mezzanine to offset the cooler elements, making it warm, inviting and comfortable for customers to sit and relax

Blacksburg Public Library Library Design - 6 weeks - Spring 2019 Revit, Photoshop

This public library renovation in Blacksburg, VA was designed with one other Interior designer. The concept behind this renovation is circuit boards which was based off of where libraries are headed in the future. There is always a constant flow of knowledge present in libraries which circuits similarly represent. The geometries within a circuit helped shape the new library along with creating a wayfinding ceiling feature.

Children’s Section

The children’s area is sectioned off from the main space by using glass partitions. This allows for both visual access to the space, which is favored due to its vibrancy, and a way for parents to watch their kids while browsing other areas of the library. Glass partitions are also ideal because they allow for acoustical control without completely blocking off the space from the general public.

The ceiling feature exists to provide a means of wayfinding throughout the space while simultaneously contributing to acoustical properties. By mimicking the nature of circuit boards, the ceiling feature reflects our concept and provides visual pathways that highlight the main points in the library. The materiality of the feature is felt which also helps to suppress sounds from traveling throughout the space.

People First Independent Living Center IDEC Student Competition Fall 2018 - 3 weeks Revit, Photoshop

This group project for an IDEC Student Competition focused on creating an educational and training space for individuals with ASD and other cognitive disabilities. The goal of this vocational training facility is to create a space that can be functional for each individual’s unique needs and create a comfortable environment for them to grow in. The idea of a fingerprint was used as the concept because each fingerprint is unique just like each person with a disability. Other than assisting with the layout of the floorplan, my job was mainly to focus on designing the courtyard where individuals could go for a change of scenery, a breath of fresh air, or to relax. There is a bedded swing that offers them a quiet place to sit. Situated next to that is waterfall which helps diffuse the sound from the rest of the courtyard. Both the waterfall and the garden provide tactile opportunities for them if they chose, or they can relax on the lounge chairs.

Sensory Space

Before entering the courtyard, individuals encounter a living wall as well as a stone bench to provide a hint as to what is on the other side of the door. The skylight helps prepare individuals for the bright outdoors as well as naturally light up the interior.

The sensory space is a place for individuals to go to either stimulate their senses through the various tactile and lighting elements, or go to a more solitary space for them to decompress and recalibrate their senses.

Interdisciplinary Health And Design Research Center Haworth Competition Spring 2019 - 6 weeks Revit, Photoshop

The concept of this design was based off graffiti and street art. This inspiration came from the existing site of the building in Roanoke, Virginia and the thought process behind innovation. Graffiti is a form of art which is very free-style and lets people express themselves, while street art has more logic behind it and really engages the community. Those two processes are resembled throughout the space by providing areas where people can be creative or buckle down and think more logistically. The atmosphere was designed to feel urban in order to represent where graffiti is often seen. Murals are painted throughout the space in order to get peoples creative minds flowing with different ideas.

Reception

Different style conference and collaboration rooms allow for all types of work styles. Whiteboard panels offer the ability to jot down ideas at a moments notice and also play with their creative side. The layout of the floorplan is based off of street gridlines from the site location which also helped develop the feature staircase. A mix of both the gridlines and inspiration of the forms of graffiti developed the shape of the staircase.

Makerspace

The makerspace is a place where people from any discipline can come create unique piece of work. It offers woodworking, printing, 3D laser printer, virtual reality, etc. The feature of this space is the mural on the back wall. One interpretations behind it this is that there is always a creative side of someone, you just have to dig a little bit and peel back a layer to get there.

COLLABORATION

RESIDENTIAL

The main materials used throughout the space were black metal, brick, concrete, and wood were to bring the urban feel to life. The primary colors, red, blue, and yellow, were used to play off the idea any color can be created using those three colors. This innovation center should have the same idea, where anyone can come up with any unique idea.
