Message from the Editor: Hey Future and Current Key Clubbers! It’s been a while since our last newsletter due to the lack of articles submitted. However, with the New Year, come many new changes! We have implemented a new article system, where club members sign up to write articles when they sign up for their events. Hopefully this new change will keep this alive! Thanks to wonderful members, both old and new, I’ve been able to compile this Beginning of the Year newsletter. So enjoy reading about past events, future events, and messages from your officers! -Olivia Berenguel

Meet Your Officers! President: Anna Zhang Hey Key Clubbers! My name is Anna Zhang, and I will be serving as your 2013-2014 Key Club President. When I first joined Key Club, I’ll be honest; it was just an extracurricular that I wanted to add to my college application. However, as the months and years have gone by since my freshman year, Key Club has become so much more. It is family to me now. I love Key Club, from its service to its spirit to its members. Everything about Key Club has continually inspired me to become a better person, and I hope I can inspire others the same way. Aside from Key Club, my favorite things include sleeping, eating, shopping, and volleyball. This Key Club year, I want to get to know all of my members, so feel free to come talk to me about anything whether its sports, school, or just personal advice. I’m looking forward to a wonderful year full of service, fun, friends, and spirit. Always stay young, wild and free!

Vice President/Soph. Rep: Ellis Johnson Key Clubbers! I’m Ellis Johnson and I am serving as your 2013-2014 Key Club Vice President. I first joined Key Club with my friends because everyone else was doing it, and although the giant number of Asians scared the crap out of me, I’m glad I stayed. As the service projects and events went on I fell in love with the club for the fun, the service, and most of all the family that Key Club truly is. In addition to Key Club, some of the things I enjoy are tennis, robotics, cello, and Daft Punk. This year in Key Club I’m looking forward to improving our club with additional events, socials, and new ways for members to interact with the Officers. I anticipate an amazing year full of Key Club memories! -Ellis Johnson

Please do not hesitate to say hi in the hallways or ask me any question! If anyone has a question about Key Club, you can contact me throughclark.kc.sec@gmail.com If I don't answer right away, I'm probably thinking of a way I can convince my mom to get a cat. Reps and Divisional Division 28 West Tech Editor: Andrew Cruz Hey key clubbers! Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. I'm pretty excited for this key club year. I am your Division Technology Editor, part of our division team. I am a huge basketball fan, and love playing the game. Also now photography has become a big part of my life, and i L-O-V-E pictures. I am so excited to meet everyone old, or new to this club. And i know for sure Clark will have another good key club year. If you ever need anything you can email me! d28w.tech@gmail.com. Hope to see y'all soon!

Junior Rep: Rachel Santos Yo kiddos! My name is Rachel, and I’m the rep for c/o 2014. Gonna be seniors! Whoop whoop! ^^ This past school year with Key Club has been an ABSOLUTE blast. I’ve gained so much experience and have had the time of my life. If you let it, Key Club takes over your life, and it’s literally the most rewarding thing. You should try it sometime. Hehe. Cause you know, ain’t no party like a Key Club party. The number one thing that you should know about me is that a majority of my time is spent pretending that I’m cool, but my obnoxiously loud voice and boisterous laugh doesn’t help the cause at all. I love movies but hate watching them, and I went through a weird phase where I was in love with Star Trek. I’m also always down to party. Always. (; As we move into the New Year, feel free to holla. I’m the one senior that you shouldn’t be intimidated by. Hehe.

Freshman Rep: Aaron Quiamzon Hey fellow Key Clubbers~ I'm Aaron Quiamzon (kyam-zohn heyhey) and I'm the representative for the class of 2016. Although this is just my first year in key club, I've developed such a passion for it. It's the dedication, hard work, and service you members put in that made me want to be a part of the board. :,) My hobbies include getting crumbs on my laptop's keyboard and laughing at my own jokes. My birthday is June 18 and I'm only thirteen years old. #sadlyfe. I have an unhealthy obsession with red velvet cakes and chicken nuggets. I also ate my twin in the womb. But real talk, I love meeting new people, so feel free to holla at me whenever~ I look forward to serving my home, school, and community with all of you. :)

Rewind! DCON I was fortunate enough to have attended the CNH District Convention from March 22-March 24 in Anaheim, California, and it was such an unforgettable experience. DCON was a chance for Key Clubbers from California, Nevada, and even Hawaii to get together and enjoy what we love about key club - service! We got to celebrate all of our service accomplishments and see how greatly they impacted our homes, schools, and communities. Not only was this event a way to gain tons of knowledge about Key Club, but we also got to elect the new CNH District Executive Board, show off our service and spirit, bond with amazing people, and expand our ohana! Clark Key Club showed off remarkable spirit at convention by wearing face paint, doing crazy hairdos, and attaching anything and everything that was black or gold to our bodies. While wearing our cute gear, we participated in informative (and fun!) workshops that taught us more about Key Club. Our club even got the honor of receiving a diamond distinguished award at DCON, which shows just how exemplary our school is! I couldn't be happier that I attended DCON. By the time I left California, I was filled with more Key Club knowledge, spirit, and motivation to serve! I thought my love for Key Club was strong before, but now I truly have a greater perspective of Key Club and I appreciate everything it does so much more. Hopefully I see you all at DCON 2014 in Sacramento, California, so we can all celebrate another amazing year of service! -Aaron Quiamzon

Kiwanis One Kiwanis One Day, which happened this year on April 6, is a day where every Kiwanis group around the world, not just the United States, participates in a way to help out the community. Back here in Vegas, we at Clark High School as well as A-Tech, Cheyenne, and other Kiwanis groups volunteered to help at a local Boys’ and Girls’ club. We helped build a shelf that the art room can use to store supplies and constructed bicycles that the children can use. We also helped make plarn, which is yarn made of old plastic grocery bags. The plarn will be used to make plastic mats for the homeless people, which, I must say, is a genius idea to use plastic bags. And while we gave to the Boys’ and Girl’s club our support and our charitable spirit, we also kicked back and relaxed with our fellow Kiwanis during break with that consisted of Little Caesar's Pizza and water. All in all, it has been fun and I feel happy that we gave something to the community on Kiwanis One Day.

Rewind! Sprinkler Sprint!

On August 10th, I volunteered with Clark Key Club to attend the Sprinkler Sprint at the Las Vegas Academy. The Sprinkler Sprint is a 5K running marathon created by an organization called "Downtown Runners." Participants running this marathon are all sprayed and drenched with water while passing by the volunteers. This event had many perks for all the volunteers such as: free t-shirts, free hats, free water-bottles, and many coupons and vouchers for sponsoring stores. My fellow club members and I were assigned to the "Misty Tunnel" station. This station was basically a street lined on both sides with high-powered fans spraying mist out toward the runners. Our job was to stand on the side of the "tunnel" and cheer for the passing runners. With lively music pumping through the stereos and amazing runners that smiled no matter how tired they were, it was hard not to be in a good mood while cheering. After the marathon was finished, everyone was invited to gather for a celebration held on the Las Vegas Academy field! There was a DJ playing music the whole time and many booths where you could buy tshirts and jewelry, but it seemed like all the volunteers were mostly interested in the free Jamba Juice. My club and I stayed a little bit longer after the party was done to help pick up the trash left on the field. To thank us, one of the event organizers gave us all a coupon for one free drink at Jamba Juice! This event was an amazing experience and I would definitely volunteer again in a heartbeat! -Lenise Wu

Look into the Future! Future Events: August Events: -Sprinkler Run (Aug 10) -August DCM (Aug 15) -Rescue Mission (Aug 16) -Ice Skating Social (Aug 24) -First Meeting (Aug 29) -School Clean Up (Aug 31)

Region Training Conference (RTC) When: October 12, 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Where: Centennial HS RTC or Region Training conference is a HUGE meet up of all the divisions in your region. In our case usually we have Division 28 West, South, and North come to a high school in our valley, and this year we are blessed to have Division 38 East and West LTG’s come and show their support! The part everyone looks forward to is the spirit rally at the end of the day where all schools show their spirit through performing cheers and showing a little of their school with it! It’s a fun way to meet new key clubbers in our Region (Region 5), and make new friends! One of the important concepts we learn at RTC is new division cheers for Fall Rally, new service projects, and learn what DCON is. My Favorite part about RTC is the service projects we do, from making blankets together, making PB&J Sandwiches, and now filling a bag with food for the needy! I do encourage everyone to attend this fun filled day, for it’s one to remember!

September Events: -Annual Carwash -Operation School Bell -September DCM -RTC Prep/Sandwich Making -Rescue Mission October Events: -Park Social/RTC Prep -RTC -October DCM

Until Next Time… PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome new and old members! Even though summer is coming to an end I am so excited to start the school year off with Key Club. For all the incoming members, I’d like to share a tip with you. When I started Key Club freshman year I wasn’t sure if it was right for me. Despite this, I stuck to Key Club and I was able to make so many new friends, go to service events, and have fun while doing all of this. So my word of advice is even if you feel uncomfortable at first, just stick to Key Club and soon it will feel like family to you! Clark Key Club loves to cheer and have fun, but we love to serve others even more. This year you guys can expect a bigger emphasis on service projects rather than socials—we will be doing everything from helping at our school’s blood drive to washing cars, or even staying up all night to raise money for cancer research! Throughout the summer your officer team has been working hard to ensure you have a wonderful Key Club experience so I hope everyone is ready to SERVE, to CHEER, and to have FUN while doing it! If you have any questions regarding Key Club whether its club fees or events please feel free to contact me! I would love to get to know my members better and help spread the Key Club love! Best Wishes, Anna Zhang
