BRITAINS DIVORCE WITH THE EU In case you’ve managed to miss it here’s a quick run down...
A
referendum vote took place on the 23rd of June 2016, in which 30million UK citizens had the opportunity to vote on whether the UK should leave or remain in the European Union. Leave won narrowly by 51.9%. Inducing a law ‘Article 51’ which means that the UK has two years to negotiate a deal and leave the EU. The European Union is made up of 28 countries, established after WW2 to foster economic and political co-operation with the understanding that countries which trade together are more likely to avoid war. The union allows goods and people to move around within a single market, with its own currency, parliament, and regulations. The UK’s imminent divorce with the EU, however, is not going to plan, a recent vote of no confidence saw more than 48 Tory MP’s write a letter explaining that Theresa May is not equipped to lead their party. Theresa is, therefore, operating without a popular majority, pushing forward with the current Brexit withdrawal agreement which is comprised of 585 pages forming a legal basis for Brexit. However, the question remains is Brexit happening? The European court of justice rules on the 10th of December 2018 that the UK could cancel Article 50 Brexit process without the permission of the other 27 EU members. This decision would need to be backed by a democratic process and would allow the UK to remain on its existing terms.
a boundary will put in place consisting of a “single customs territory between the EU and UK” splitting Northern Ireland which is part of the UK and Republic of Ireland which remains part of the EU. Freedom of movement will also be protected for more than three million EU citizens in the UK and one million UK nationals living in the EU, allowing people to continue studying, living and working in the EU. This freedom of movement will be maintained until the final agreement is reached in 2020. The last UK divorce bill will cost the UK an estimated £50 billion, as outlined in an EU summary document the UK will have to honour existing commitments to EU programs.
“BRITAIN will FORMALLY EXIT THE EU on MARCH 29TH, 2019, at this point it will CEASE ANY INVOLVEMENT with EU DECISION MAKING.”
Currently, Britain will formally exit the EU on March 29th, 2019, at this point it will cease any involvement with EU decision making. But will remain inside the EU’s single market and remain subject to EU laws and regulations until December 2020, while both sides order their new trading relationship through negotiations. The Irish border is also a significant topic of conversation; there will be no hard border put in place between the EU and Republic of Ireland in the short term. Following this, potentially
On the 11th of December, Mrs May put forward her Brexit deal however it was heading towards a significant defeat. Consequently, in a dramatic turn, the vote in parliament has been postponed until the 7th of January. The political difference within the conservative party has lead to Mrs May finding it challenging to find a deal that is acceptable to all. Many hardcore Brexiteers within the Tory party suggesting that no deal Brexit would be better than a soft Brexit. The alternative options the UK has to consider is Stay in the EU, which to many would mean a considerable loss of political face and would most likely require a new Prime Minister with the backing of a general election. Holding another referendum is another option, favoured by the likes of Justine Greening, the former Education Sectary she stated that the decision should be given back to the people. The future relationship between the EU and the UK is uncertain, with just under 100 days remaining the house of commons are under extreme pressure to create a solution.

esterday saw the launch of one of the world’s most hotly anticipated runway shows ‘The Victoria Secret Fashion Show’. Social media was buzzing with Images featuring some of the most beautiful and toned women on the planet. Referred to as the ‘Superbowl’ of the modelling industry this years show entertained 6.6 million viewers, broadcast by CBS globally. Featuring some of the world’s favorite supermodels such as Gisele, Naomi Campbell, Gigi Hadid, and Kendall Jenner. Obtaining a place on that pink runway is no easy feat, regimented exercise routines and strict diets have placed the VS girls at the forefront of fitness inspiration. Melbourne born Shanina Shaik made her fifth appearance on the VS runway this year. Based in New York, Shanina works through a rigorous training routine at angel hot spot ‘Dogpound’, high-intensity Pilates classes, dance cardio and of course weight training allowing her to carry those wings. To get that perfected VS body the girls work through a process of muscle isolation, slow controlled movements in certain areas of the body achieved through low impact exercises with weights. In a recent interview with Elle Magazine, Shanina claims to have been working out 2 times a day, two weeks prior to the show. There is also a great emphasis on diet, Shanina starts the day with hot water and lemon, known for its immune boosting qualities promoting digestion through increasing metabolic rate. For breakfast in the run-up to the show she explains how she has “2 boiled eggs and avocado, smoked salmon or some sort of green plant based juice.” Lunch and dinner follows a similar trend with a combination of steamed and boiled fish combined with vegetable stir fry. Shanina looks to complement this with black coffee for an energy hit. The Victoria Secret models are “aggressively fit” in peak physical condition. This promotion of this ‘idealistic’ body has been controversial since the shows launch in December 2001. The show’s models exercise obsessively, competing with one another to perfect their bodies conforming to strict weight and body fat requirements. Adrina Lima one of the shows longest serving angels, told one reporter that she cuts out solid food one week before an appearance with many models also cutting fluids reducing water retention. One fashion editor referred to the show as a “Circus of competitive anorexia broadcast streamed and applauded. Women are rewarded for their ability to restrict and deny themselves food.” The Victoria Secret show is a controversial topic, Victoria Secrets parent company L Brands was recently forced to apologize after the head of marketing Ed Razek told Vogue he didn’t want transgender models in the show because it would spoil the ‘fantasy’. In the same interview, he also explained VS had no interest in portraying a wider range of sizes and shapes. However, the show does continue to be popular despite claims that VS is losing its market share it still maintains its position as the largest lingerie brand on a global scale. The 2017 show also gained an audience of 1 billion worldwide a 45% increase on 2016. Suggesting the Victoria Secret show is here to stay.

ay the 28th was a turning point for women’s rights in Northern Ireland, a vote to change the eighth amendment which prohibits abortion in all cases was abolished. Women in Ireland now have access to abortion up to 12 weeks like most other European countries. ‘Together for yes’ was the national civil society campaign campaigning for ‘a more compassionate Ireland that provides abortion care to women who need it.’ Collectively the campaign shared stories from women who have been affected by the law and spoke out for change.
when the baby has no chance of survival. Jenifer one of the lead YES campaigners looked to share her experience. Upon finding out her baby girl had Spinal Bifida with no chance of survival. At 22 weeks, the doctors explained how her baby would suffocate when born due to the pressure on her lungs. However, with hands tied by the law they couldn’t advocate abortion. Jenifer’s only option was to continue with the pregnancy and give birth to a dying baby. Her other option was to travel outside the country an for induced labour.
