A Historical Gig in Leeds Leeds has always had a thriving, varied music and live band scene, it’s just not been as good as other cities at blowing its own trumpet (or plucking it’s own a gee-tar). The Who – Live At Leeds, 14th Feb r u a r y 1 9 7 0 While lacking the cultural significance of many of the other gigs featured on this list, this perfor mance is nevertheless quite s i m p l y t h e benchmark by which all other rock concerts should be judged. A blistering celebration of rock and roll, ‘The Who – Live At Leeds’ captures possibly the best live band to have ever plugged in an amp at their absolute peak. When they took to the stage at the Leeds
Metropolitan University in February 1970, The Who had everything a band could wish for; an effortlessly talented, pulsing b a s s i s t i n Jo h n Entwhistle, one of the most charismatic and gifted lead guitarists in Pete To w n s h e n d , Roger Daltrey, a natural frontman with an enviable vocal ability and of course, driving them a l l , t h e t i re l e s s, manic, ruthless drumming of Keith Moon. After a long world tour organised to promote their first r o c k o p e r a
‘ To m m y ‘ , T h e Who scheduled two dates in Yorkshire, one in Leeds and one in Hull, for the p u r p o s e o f recording a live album to mark its conclusion. With a brilliant rendition of their single ‘Substitute‘, a clutch of excellent covers and a near 15-minute version of ‘My Generation‘, the resultant recording is not just the g reatest live album of them all, but one that captures in time one of the greatest live bands of them all at their absolute best.

Atmosphere, character, sound and drinks are the important things needed for a good live performance, and the Brudenell is the best at all four! Eliza and the B e a r
I was lucky enough to c at ch u p w i t h Ja m e s Kellegher (lead vocals, guitar) and Martin Dukelow (vocals, guitar) from Eliza and the Bear before their performance at The Wardrobe on the 12th October. It was a pure pleasure to chat to them about the festival season and where they are going n e x t . ______________________ How have the past few m o n t h s b e e n ? James: It feels like a step up this year, we have a lot of new fans coming to see us which is obviously good. ______________________ I hear an album is coming out next year. Will it be more of the same happy tunes or will there be a bit o f v a r i e t y ? James: When we started
writing the album it was a conscious decision that we needed to be kind of a bit of up and down. There's a couple of slower songs, there's a couple of heavier d a r k e r s o n g s . Martin: I remember, I don't know what bad news we received but we was all in a really really bad mood one day and a couple of the songs have ended up - I can't remember what that was - we've written a couple that are a bit moody, which we're going t o p l a y t o n i g h t . James: I don't think that we c o u l d d o l i k e t we l ve uplifting songs. You'd get tired by the end, it'd be too h a p p y ! ______________________ What do you prefer? Fe s t i v a l s o r t o u r i n g ? Martin: I prefer touring. Touring has more of like a routine so when we're on tour we know that we're getting here at 4, doing sound check, coming off then playing at 9. Festival can be a little bit like oh my equipment is in some shed somewhere with everyone e l s e ' s . Ja m e s : A n d c o s i t ' s normally weekends Friday, S at u rd ay f e s t i va l d ay Sunday 5 days off whereas on tour you're in tour mode with shows all the t i m e . Martin: The only thing that I'd say at festivals
though is that you meet l o a d s o f b a n d s James: There's a lot of bands that we played 75% of our festivals with. We played with the same bands so you made a lot of friends that are playing the same stage. It's quite nice to make friends who are doing the same thing. ______________________ Where do you prefer playing? The South or the N o r t h ? Martin: London is our favourite place to play because it's almost like our home. If I can be honest with you I think the North James: The north is more r o u n d e d Martin: It's more hotspots in the North do you know what I mean, like in the South, especially the south coast like Bournemouth, Southampton, Portsmouth it's cool - we've not done much there. Brighton's cool. Up here you've got Liverpool, Manchester, N e w c a s t l e , Middlesborough, Leeds there's a lot more places that we hit that we enjoy. ______________________ Written by Rosie Driver. L a t i t u d e s
We caught up with Jon from Latitudes ahead of their headline performance this Saturday at StrangeForms... *StrangeForms Festival takes place over the Easter Bank Holiday (19th & 20th April) at Wharf Chambers and features sixteen post-rock, post-metal and math rock a c t s . * ________________________ BAD OWL PRESENTS: We hear you'll be playing some new songs at StrangeForms what can we expect from them and does this mean we can get excited by the prospect of a new album s o o n ? JL: The new album's about 60% written and should hopefully be nearing completion by the end of summer. It's a solidification of the darker, heavier, more expansive style of Individuation (2012) while leaving a bit more room for the crunch and heft of our debut full length Agonist (2009). There are even some emotive passages almost redolent of our 'post-metal' roots. Basically the new tunes are heavy as hell and chock full of riffs and rhythms, melody and atmosphere. It looks like this one will have less in the way of sublimated trance-outs and will mainly go straight for the jugular. But still be as melodic as anything we've ever done. All our best features combined
but more so, like everyone always says about their new m a t e r i a l . We'll be playing 2 new tunes at the festival, they're pretty i n t e n s e . _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ BOP: You last played Leeds in October 2013 as part of the Octernal Festival at the Brudnell Social Club. Do you have any particular memories o f t h e s h o w / e v e n t ? JL: My first memory is lovely beer at a very decent price! I suppose we stuck out like the proverbial thumb being the only metal band on the bill but it was fun to play! We pretty much had to leg it straight after but we all enjoyed watching Heart Ships with their Matt Berningeresque frontman. Reminds me, should check their record out. I really wanted to see Islet but we had to dash so our driver could get us home and himself back to Manchester within the day to save us cash. Rock and roll eh?! ________________________ BOP: Latitudes are asked to curate their own gig - what four bands, past or present, would you have on the bill? JL: Cripes. Could a question get more difficult? 4 bands! Um. Venue would be the Black Heart in Camden, it would be mandatory to consume 4 pints of their Rogue Juniper Pale Ale before heading upstairs. I'm going for a certain consistency of malevolence h e r e : 9-10pm Deathspell Omega circa 2014 (First time on s t a g e ) 10:15 - 11:30pm Godspeed circa 2000 (Slow riot into Lift y r s k i n n y fi s t s ) 11:45pm - 12:30am Joy
Division circa 1979 (Unknown Pleasures into C l o s e r ) 12:45 - 1:45am Slayer circa 1986 (Hell Awaits into Reign i n B l o o d ) Music to be played between bands: maybe Raime, D e m d i k e S t a re, H a x a n Cloak, anything darkly atmospheric with minimal vocals, no guitars, minimal rhythm. Actually maybe something weird and choral Ligeti's Lux Aeterna, early P e n d e r e c k i . . . ________________________ BOP: And finally, other than StrangeFor ms, what are Latitudes plans for the rest of 2 0 1 4 ? JL: We've been out of the game a bit over the last few months, mainly due to guitarist Adam and his wife having had a second child but there have also been other band members getting married and honeymooning, adult life taking over. Luckily enough the riffs are still flowing and the new music is sounding even more powerful and even more emotive. After the 'mini-tour' based around StrangeForms we've a few more gigs coming up, including London in June with Witch Mountain/Necro Deathmort and hopefully more in the offing. We'll hopefully be hitting the studio late this year and releasing the new album early 2015. We'll see where that takes us. ________________________ Written by IS Ramsay.
