Fresh playful cheerful

LB, a Gourmet Grocer prototype store inspired by the lunchbox, will service a suburban area of the upper middle class in northern America. Trends are leading towards the automation of the grocery store—with this, there is the potential for a lack of social interaction that comes naturally with grocery shopping. The lunchbox has inspired this design solution with its connotation to the youthful, the social, and the healthy. The concepts of fresh, playful and cheerful have directed the design solution for LB by Gourmet Grocer, and will be the key to their successful business model. An efficient design will allow groceries to be automatically curated, packaged, and delivered to the user via the LB grocery store hub. Traditional grocery shopping is revived through this new, innovative design.

design process BAKERY With wayfinding in mind, this bubble flow leads the customer from the entrance fully around the store where they naturally end up towards the exit; here they can pick up their packaged groceries. The back of house, which is visually separate from the main shopping area, contains storage, where groceries will be curated and packed for customers, a receiving area, for delivery of new food, and a bakery, for creating fresh goods to be sold in the “Grab & Go” and “Coffee Bar”.

Design FEATURES

Raw materials, like brick, reclaimed wood, and concrete, are meant to reflect the natural and honest business model that LB holds. Bright blue branding is meant to contrast with the raw materials to draw attention to the store and to the store name. The small patio area, combined with the garage doors, is meant to open the space up and let the outdoors in, creating the potential for a seamless transition from inside the store to outside.

elevations to go services Design FEATURES

With an eclectic style and vibrant color scheme, LB encourages customers to shop and relax in a positive, lively environment. If customers need a couple of items, they can purchase from the prepared foods sections, or if they need a “pick-me-up”, they can order from the automated, gourmet coffee maker in “The Box”. The indoor picnic area offers customers an area of respite where they can enjoy food, interact with the garden, or simply wait for their order to be completed at the pick-up station. At the end of their trip to LB, groceries that have been ordered will be available for pick up under the green canopy, which acts as a way-finding feature to the exit.

Perspectives View From entry

When customers enter the space, they are welcomed by a stimulating, well-lit space. There are sightlines to all major sections of the store: to go shop, coffee bar, and pick up. A variety of different patterns, materials, and textures are used throughout the store to create interest. As a child, the contents of a lunchbox were exciting and sometimes mysterious; much like the lunchbox, some areas of LB are not immediately within the sightline, such as the demo kitchen and fresh food market. Large, graphic signage make navigating easy and feel natural.

Perspectives View from Pick up area

When looking out from the pickup area, there is a clear view through the middle of the store. High ceilings with industrial pendant lights make the space feel open, bright, and spacious. This open area of the store employs cheerful colors and plywood furniture. These colors and materials compliment the community garden, which lies to the left of the main seating area. Here customers are encouraged to learn about the vegetables and herbs that are grown in store that are used in the demo kitchen. Overall, the design for LB is meant to attract customers who are interested in healthy living and encourage people to relax and interact with their environment.
