Sharon Palmer, Branch Supervisor at BCIC Montego Bay, shares Douglas Adams’ philosophy: “to give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity”. It is this selfless passion for service that makes her a Super Star. Though Sharon is a celebrated employee and Kiwanian,(Kiwanian of the year 2012 as well as the Kiwanis International Distinguished Club Secretary Award); she takes no pride in her achievements but rather in being a mother, wife, good steward and Christian. The story of how she became a Kiwanian is a remarkable one, celebrating BCIC’s core values of openness, authenticity and compassion. In 2009, Sharon participated in a project on behalf of BCIC with Will’s Road Basic School in St.James, organized by Kiwanis. Here she presented a refrigerator. The warm reception and appreciation she received from the children triggered her need to extend her stewardship; joining The Kiwanis Club of Providence, where she currently serves as Director for Young Children Priority Ones (YCPO). Kiwanis is based on three pillars: service, leadership and fellowship. Sharon feels that service is most important and offers the greatest reward. She believes that whether or not one is affiliated with a service organization, it is important to give your time and resources, irrespective of the size. Moreover, our fellow Jamaicans, particularly our children, are in need of so much assistance. She urges each of us to get involved. When she is not unrelentingly serving: organizing school feeding programs, advocating for better health care for women and children of low income families; she spends her time baking, planning events and fellowshipping with her brethren at Beeston Spring Apostolic in Westmoreland. Added to her long list of hobbies is marriage counseling, for which she is certified. Sharon has been married for 24 year and is the mother of two beautiful daughters. She is also a past student of the Immaculate Conception High School and the University of West Indies. In addition to her many accolades for her civic and church related duties, we applaud Sharon’s leadership of the Montego Bay team (which won the prestigious Customer Service Award for 2010) and we commend her for successfully coordinating the launch of CIPS product in the north coast region, as well as, her apointment as CIPS Liason. Sharon, remain steadfast in your service, professionalism and leadership!

HIV/AIDS Sensitization and Workplace Policy

The Caribbean is second to the African Region in the number of reported HIV/AIDS cases; sparking growing concern about the spread HIV/AIDS as well as the well- being of person’s living with the disease. With this, BCIC’s Montego Bay Branch has grasped the Jamaica AIDS Society’s (JAS) Project Smiles Initiative; aimed at providing assistance to HIV positive children. We commend the efforts of the Montego Bay Branch, which, for the past three (3) years have been offering support: clothing, non-perishable food items, toys and monetary donations. The group, in an extension of their service intend to organize social outreach activities for the children and their families in the near future. Sharon Palmer, who works closely on the project, concedes that, there needs to be greater sensitization on the issue of discrimination of Persons Living with HIV/ AIDS, as there is sufficient information and medication available which allows you to live a normal life with the disease. With the completion of the draft green paper on HIV/Aids Workplace Policy in 2011, The Ministry of Labour and Social Security is now in the voluntary compliance phase i.e. each Company is now required to develop and implement a HIV/AIDS policy. Staff at the Montego Bay Branch are cognisant of such development are of the view that confidentiality should be the main pillar of such a policy. We commend the efforts of Nastasica, Joy, Debbie, from Head Office, and the Montego Bay Staff as they try to make a difference in our lives. They will continue to play an integral role the development the BCIC Policy on HIV/AIDS as well as the sensitization of other staff members on this important topic.
