Malcolm

I remember July 8, 2013 being a day riddled with mixed emotions but hopefulness that it would be a great experience. Even though my face Jomarie Malcolm was unknown, I was greeted with warmth and welcome that had seemed an estranged feature in the corporate world. From the first day the experience has given me a greater appreciation for the impact and promise of my chosen profession. I was given the chance to be a leader, teammate, colleague and an instrumental member of the legal department. In my capacity as an intern, I never felt my opinions and suggestions weren’t valued. The experience challenged me to be even more organized than I was before and to always trust in the power of initiative and focus. For that, I am truly indebted to BCIC and most notably Mr.Levy and Miss. Cohen who created this position on blind faith and it is my sincerest hope that I carried out my role exceeding the expectations of that of an intern.

The Annual POCA Training has been stripped of its classroom setting and fast tracked to the online domain. This new format located on Share Point allows persons to be able to complete this mandatory training within their own time and comfort. The vision behind this transition was to allow persons to learn at their own pace and in their own time especially considering that it would have to be done by members of the company who are not always in-house. The POCA Online Refresher Training was launched on September 6, 2013 and will be running until September 20, 2013.

Undercover Superstar

Jermaine Antoine is no shy- guy. His life has been quite adventurous as he recounts his life experiences with ZOOM.

Passionate Footballer Jermaine commenced his football exploits in second form at Papine High School and started playing for the semi-professional Barbican FC under 16 in 2000. Jermaine is easily BCIC’s “star baller” in the Insurance League & Knock-Out Competition 2013. Like the great Brazilian Footballer Pele, Jermaine wore the prestigious # 10 jersey (in football “playmakers” or the “most creative” players are allowed to wear this number reminiscence of the impact that Pele made on the sport). At the heart of the BCIC’s defence, Jermaine dispossessed and “out-muscled” the best strikers the Insurance League had to offer, giving his goalkeeper some level of ease while defending. With his agile movement and speed while dribbling the football, he created havoc in the oppositions’ defence, so much that he had to be brought down on several occasions in order to stop him. The most dominant voice on the field, shouting instructions to a team of mostly young and inexperienced players, he led them to an impressive semi-final finish in the Knock-Out Competition. Highly respected by his teammates, they look to his leadership to guide them to victory in the upcoming Insurance League & Knock-Out Competition 2014. As they say, “ROME wasn’t built in a day”. Multi- Talented Jermaine is an amateur plumber, who helps out his neighbours and friends from time to time. His interest in plumbing was sparked by his work experience at Jamaica Plumbing Supply Ltd. Jermaine’s next step in the plumbing business is to become certified and one day open his own business. Engaged & Empowered At BCIC, Jermaine is a Car Park attendant. He tells ZOOM, ‘I love BCIC, it’s everything that a workplace should be’. Empowered, passionate and engaged, Jermaine had no hesitation in approaching our Marketing Manager, Simone Foote and requesting Diamond Max fliers to share the new policy with his neighbours, family and friends. He told ZOOM that a few friends enquired about the product because they saw the advertisements, and he told them what he knew but he needed more information, so he asked Simone and was able to fulfil the request from the potential clients. Family Man Jermaine is a family man, who is motivated by his two son’s Demario and Romario and his mother. He believes that ‘in anything that you are doing, just do your best! ZOOM salutes Jermaine for his passion and engagement...two of BCIC’s core values!

Enterprize Risk Managememt Programme

What is Enterprise Risk Management?

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a strategic business discipline that supports the achievement of the organization’s objectives by addressing risks and managing the combined impact of those risks as an interrelated risk portfolio.

ERM Philosophy

BCIC considers the management of risk to be an integral part of good management and has committed to embedding risk management into existing practices and business processes. Over time, this will allow us all to be involved in the disciplined management of risks. Risks are becoming more profound therefore BCIC is commitJennifer ted to practicing ERM in order to: Increase the likelihood of successfully delivering on its goals and objectives Sadler Encounter fewer unanticipated outcomes Better assess risks associated with changes in its environment Better describe to Customers and other Stakeholders what is being done to manage its risks

Responsibilities

BCIC’s established Enterprise Risk Management Committee (ERMC) comprising of Peter Levy, Monique Cohen, Maurice Bolt, Garth Rowe and Jennifer Sadler. As the lead, the Risk Management Committee is responsible for spearheading a rigorous and coordinated approach to assessing and responding to risks that affect the achievement of our organization. We should bear in mind that we are all responsible for Risk Management. Therefore, it is our responsibility to ensure that all risks are identified and managed appropriately. We are expected to make and support risk informed decisions and remain vigilant: watching out for emerging issues that could jeopardize our organization’s success.

Risk Management is our Responsibility! We are therefore depending on you to play your part and report any risks you observe so together we can enhance the effectiveness our ermp.

Introducing MotorCycle Max!

Effective July 1st BCIC added a new member to its family of motor products “Motor Cycle Max”. Prior to this, motor cycle insurance was written strictly on an accommodation basis and brokers and agents would have to refer to a BCIC representative to determine whether or not cover could be granted. We have now provided them with an easy to use rate guide, competitive terms and the ability to bind cover. BCIC recognizes the need for such a product and we cater to needs. This new product is expected to do extremely well surpassing many of our flagship products. We are the innovator in the insurance business. So tell everyone you know about Motorcycle Max

Hot Pick: Ladies of the Night review

Patrick Brown’s latest play, ‘Ladies of the Night’ is certainly not one for the faint- hearted. It explores the harsh realities that many of our nation’s women endure: prostitution and the consequences thereof. The play centres on a group of 4 women in their twenties, who share not only bonds of friendship but also a lifestyle. The ladies, Sugar : Keisha Patterson (the naïve-carry one), Cherry (mature and level- headed.), Honey Sakina Deer: (the pessimist with good reason) and Juicy: Camille Davis (low- self- esteem, but not totally simple- minded), are all appropriately named due to the nature of their business. If you’re looking for a belly-full of laughter but at the same time a sobering experience. ‘Ladies of the Night is just what you need. You can catch Ladies of the Night, at Centerstage Theatre in New Kingston. One last thing, ‘Dreams do come true’.

The first of what will be many Sports days was something for the record books!! Teams united in an effort for the final day like never before, even those who previously seemed to have fallen along the wayside. All decked out in their colours, the level of competitiveness will be one spoken of for many years to come. Who knew that BCIC’s staff members were so competitive? We have to BIG UP the Red Scorpions who were no doubt the champions of the day in more ways than one. With the least number of staff members present, they were able to pull off a great win. Seemingly their absent members are mostly Sabbath Keepers who were sending up prayers for them from the day started to the very end. The Yellow Panthers entered the final sports day with zero points; the only team without points from the prior competition were however not daunted because they were on a wining mission. They studied the competition and came prepared. They executed their plan and pulled off an almost impossible feat of moving from the last position on the points table to a whopping second place. Hats Off to the Yellow Panthers! There was no questioning the determination of the Blue Stingrays. They basked in the glory of placing a respectable third! The White Falcons and the Purple Cobras gave credence to the saying “The first shall be the last and the last shall be the first”. They set the pace for the various competitive events in leadership, team organization, dress and sporting prowess leading up to the final day of competition. But they were no match for the competitiveness they spawned on the final day. We sincerely thank them for showing us the way. Every day we see the core values hanging on the walls but have we really paid keen attention to how we apply them? This first sports day showed how Passionate we can be about the things we care about. During the different games before the final day, the consistency of actions, values, principles, expectations, and outcomes were evidence of our Integrity. We were Open and Honest (Authenticity) with all points. The activities have demonstrated the highest degree of Employee Engagement to date. We also pay homage to the Senior Executive Managers who participated and showed us that we are one! The level of Professionalism and the Commitment we showed to our respective houses is evidence of the inculcation of BCIC’s core values which we will no doubt transfer to the workplace whenever the need arise. We congratulate the executives of the Staff Association for a job well done!! We congratulate all Staff Members of BCIC and we look forward to next year’s Sports Day which will be bigger and even better!
