M E N ’S Name Here: ULELE Slate Blue/Charcoal $75
IN HAWAI‘I, FISHING IS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST “THE CATCH.” It has always been an integral part of life in the Islands; profoundly connecting Hawaiians to the sea – and each other – on a myriad of levels. Fishermen and women have always been valued craftspeople, fashioning makau (hooks), lures, nets and other implements with stunning mastery and effectiveness. We honor this deep-seated commitment to craftsmanship, infusing the same level of care and detail into our products. Whether it’s paying homage to the age old tradition of net weaving through an inspired pattern, or the hand sewn toe-post in our leather sandals that harkens back to hand lashed canoes. We simply make the best sea-worthy shoes and sandals to support a long day spent doing what you love, fishing. Today, the legacy and thrill of lawai‘a (to fish) remains a significant part of life in the Islands, reinforcing that connection between humans and the ocean. Find Your Footing Some cast by shore or in boats, others, like Hawai‘i Island’s Gerald Yoro, do it the more traditional way: throwing net. Requiring nimble steps and the element of surprise, a net-fisherman must hide from the fish by not casting a shadow. As hard as this method may be, Yoro fishes sustainably, throwing back younger, smaller fish with the hope that one day they might become what he’s looking for.

FROM AUGUST THROUGH MARCH, THIRD-GENERATION NĀPŌ‘OPO‘O FISHERMAN CHUCK LESLIE CAN BE FOUND IN HIS BOAT, HANA LIKE, fishing the deep waters off of South Kona. In the early morning hours, he fishes for ‘ōpelu—a type of mackerel sustainably fished by Native Hawaiians—with a handcrafted hoop net, just as his ancestors have done for centuries. Since the age of five, he has been devoted to practicing traditional Hawaiian fishing methods. Now in his late 70’s, Chuck is the last traditionally raised fisherman in the region, but is passing down this knowledge to the next generation, connecting the youth to their past. Fluent in nearly every fishing practice, Chuck continues to make and share his coveted ‘ōpelu nets, which take about 3,000 hours to make. Thanks to Chuck and the regional fishermen that honor these important cultural fishing traditions, the ‘ōpelu population remains healthy to this day.
THE MAKAU WORN AS A SYMBOL FOR SAFE PASSAGE OVER WATER - and used as OluKai’s logo - the makau, or fishhook, has held deep cultural significance in Hawai‘i for over a millennium as a token for good fortune and strength. Traditionally carved from bone, wood, stone and coral, there were different makau crafted to catch every single type of fish and sea creature, and they were often passed down through generations. Some makau were prized so highly that they were thought to possess mana (celestial powers) and were hidden in gourds. Even in Hawaiian lore, the god Māui had a makau called Mānaiakalani that he used to try and hook all of the islands together to unite them. This same sentiment of unity still rings true today in Hawai‘i, as the makau remains a symbol of humans’ connection with the sea, its creatures and the fragile balance of life on islands surrounded by the ocean.

The Allure
For Alishiya, fishing is about calming her mind, tapping into her primal instincts, and living in the moment.
of the Depths
Alishiya Holland finds inner peace below the surface.
BORN AND RAISED IN HAWAI‘I, ALISHIYA HOLLAND IS RELATIVELY NEW TO SPEARFISHING. Even though she has lived near the beach her whole life, Alishiya has only recently connected with the ocean and Mother Nature. About five years ago, she relocated to Kona on the Island of Hawai‘i, a move that put ocean-going activities at the center of her world. With the help of her brother, Alishiya learned to spearfish from the shallow reefs to the dark blue depths. Soon, she fell in love with the world beneath the surface, which instilled in her respect for the ‘āina and a passionate appreciation for the ocean and its inhabitants. Now, Alishiya dives three to four times a week, catching only enough fish for family, friends, and the momand-pop restaurants near her home.
