A long time ago, famous Portuguese navigators and explorers discovered countries and continents around the globe, giving them their names, laying out the great trade routes and drawing new boundaries on maps. The era of great discoveries passed many years ago, howselves in textbooks around the world and brought fame to their country forever. These days Portugal is a popular country among many travellers.

isbon is a political and cultural capital of the country. The city is often chosen for a 1-2-day stop, when traveling further to the islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the temperate climate, Lisbon has pleasant summers and mild winters. We opted for a KLM flight to get to Portugal. Tasty meals on board at each portion of the flight are one more pleasure of KLM’s double flight. So the trip is going to be easy. Once the plane begins coming down in Lisbon, a large bridge strikes your eyes immediately; the bridge was named after the famous navigator Vasco Da Gama and reaches 17 kilometres in length. There is an information centre at the airport, where you can find any useful information for tourists. The airport has a direct connection with the city through an underground line. It should be noted that to travel with the Lisbon Underground is quite comfortable and clear. Underground stations intersect with city suburban train stops that allows bypassing almost all of Lisbon and its neighbourhood on your own. Cars are clean and comfortable inside; air conditioning works in summer and there are rubbish bins. If you plan to travel by public transport, it is better to purchase a travel card for a certain number of days or travels. So, this is Lisbon. Its symbol is a black raven depicted on the emblem of the city. Recently, the interactive museum Lisboa Story Centre has been built to explore the history of the capital of Portugal; it is located right at the central city square near the port Praçade ComÊrcio children and adults. Generally, the central part of the city is an open-air museum; every now and then you want to stop and view the city panorama and you are not to walk far away to accomplish this. Dozens of restaurants and cafes on the main streets of the city offer a great opportunity to rest and take a bite. Portugal is a real paradise for gourmets. The Mediterranean cuisine dominates there and it serves fish and seafood prepared in a traditional sophisticated way. If you like sweets, you have to try delicious local pastries sold in pastry shops. Canned sardines are the most popular national product. Among beverages, we should distinguish red wines from Carcavelos region and, of course, Madeira – a calling card of Portugal.
A fado is the peculiarity of the Portuguese culture. This is a lyrical song performed solo by a man or a woman. Fado sounds everywhere in the city once the sun sets: in restaurants, on fairs and on the streets of the city. To visit Portugal and not listen to a fado means not to get acquainted with the soul of Portugal. Lots of fado may be heard in Alfama, a historic district of Lisbon. Accommodation. There are many accommodation you rent a room or a bed), apartments, or flats, and to 5-star hotels.
As for shopping, of course, Lisbon has shopping centres with shops of known networks, however, if you want to buy something really Portuguese, then visit local fairs. This is a feature that is not found anywhere in Europe. Fairs are working all year round. Here, the locals make clothes, shoes and various accessories with their own hands, demonstrating their skills right in front of your eyes. Prices for such handmade things are very reasonable.

Muslims who settled the Iberian Peninsula built this mighty building in the X century. The longer you look at it from the bottom, the more you make sure that the fortress is inaccessible. Almost all the way is pedestrian, and it is on a steep slope. The ascent takes about 40 minutes in general. However, reaching the castle, you begin to understand – it’s worth it. There, you can linger and contemplate the city from different points of the fortress, rove about its paths between its watchtowers, as local residents did long time ago. In summer, the Lisbon Riviera attracts tourists. It includes the cities Cascais and Estoril. ne of decently dressed Christmas trees stands just in the mid of downtown, nearby Saint Stephen’s Gothic Cathedral, symbol of Vienna, and old European houses of pompous Baroque style. It seems time has turned back and His Majesty the King is just to come out to his people. City has over ten Christmas markets where one can find any Xmas stuff – from Christmas tree decorations to delicacies. Key market squares are those nearby city Hall park Rathausplatz, Schloss Schönbrunn, in the park close to Belvedere Palace. Horsed carriages can be seen in the central historical part of the city – it seems they have never disappeared from the place since they’ve been the only transportation means. Horse is king’s animal, and Vienna is the capital of European monarchy, thus horse culture is same level with Art here! Spanische Hofreitschule, Spanish horse-riding school, is operating downtown, where one can buy tickets for the real aristocracy show – horse ballet and with own eyes evaluate equestrians skills along with graceful beauty of stallions. It’s unforgivable sin to stay in Vienna without seeing opera! The main one is Vienna State Opera, one of the first grand buildings built in 1869 at the famous Ringstrasse street.

Fresh fried grilled sausage immediately at the street as take-away meals is what you really need during long walks! Generally it is common thing to eat and drink in the street in aristocratic Vienne in Christmas season. Hot gluhwein will make holiday mood and assist to get warm in cool wet weather – it’s what European winter looks like. Christmas and New Year are the most significant holidays of the year in the European countries. These fests full with joy, goodness and hope are mostly celebrated in the family circle or with friends. Each European country has its own
Polish Xmas dinner has at least 12 meals. It’s an edible tribute to each further month. Menu does not have any meat but carp is fried and potato salad or apples dressed with horse radish are served as topping. Mushroom soup or beetroot and cabbage soup, boiled barley and dumpling is also served. No meals of game birds are allowed as if someone is trying a bit of duck
Herring is an inherent and symbolic meal of Germany’s festive table. It is considered that herring is the meal which for sure will bring happiness in the year to come. The other traditional and not less
boiled fore hock and of course a variety of German brands. New Year table is also served with pies plum, apple and nut cakes.
Xmas table in Norway is traditional one. Each family has its own specialties of the house. The most common are spareribs, dried codfish lutefisk, potato or turnip mash, sour cabbage and variety of sauces. Beer and special cake full of plums and cardamom spiced are prepared specially for holidays. Inhabitants

This is the place where fish refreshments and various salads which is done with boiled potato, carrots and beetroot, added with pickled cucumbers and onions and dress with a mix of cream, sugar and vinegar. Bulgarian’s table will have a pie with surprise baked in it. Specific feature of such a pie is that the guests taking the slice will have a coin, or a nut or a peppercorn in it. Happy owner of the nut will make a family next year. And the one with a coin will become rich in the year to come.
It is impossible to imagine Italian Xmas and New Year table without traditional lentil and franks. One of those meals mandatory for Xmas table is also turkey stuffed with sophistic filling of chestnuts, apples, pears, walnuts, veal, back fat, herbs and brandy. Besides that Italy is famous for its Christmas pastry and desserts. The ones to mention here are panettone, torrone, panforte, pandoro along with richarelli and stuffoli. Milano is the fermented dough filled with raisings, citron, nuts and spices. Torrone is very sweet and calories rich dessert from Rome which is halve with almond nuts, raisings, sugar and honey. Panforte is honey cake filled with almond nuts, citron and spices coming to the festive tables as far as from Sienna.
Turkey is the main course of French Xmas table. Frenchmen are joking: “New Year tends not to come in the absence of turkey“. Traditional New Year table in France is not made without roasted chestnuts, oysters, nicely decorated goose liver paste sandwich, variety of cheese and for sure French wine . Xmas here is featured with tasty desserts, including yule log. In the old days wooden log was fired to attract prosperity to the family and now it is reproduced in chocolate.
Despite of differences in New Year welcoming, of a great variety of festive culinary propensities in the various countries, all of us are united in genuine desire to stay happy and loved, healthy and successful in the year to come. And it means it is not a big difference

A bit more than a hundred years ago double event has happened in the world of aviation – English Channel has been conquered by the first airplane in the world. The designer and pilot of this airplane was one and the same guy – Louis Charles Joseph Bleriot.
T
he hero of his days was born in 1872 in Cambrai – provincial French town in Nord department. He learned engineering at “Sainte Barbe” Paris College and “Central School of Arts and Manufactures” and following the graduation he has established lanterns and automobile accessories manufacturing facilities. Further on, in 1900, young inventor presented airplane- ornithopter which he has built in cooperation with Clement Ader. However unfortunately it did not get off the ground. Louis suspended his inventions due to lack of funds. Nevertheless in 1907, with money collected, at a fifth attempt Louis designed Blériot V monoplane which he called “Duck”, able to fly. Louis also has been test pilot of his flying machines. In a year, in summer 1908, Louis Bleriot witnessed French tour of Wilbur Wright, who stroked young designer and pilot with American’s craftsmanship. Same year Englishman Alfred Harmsworth, Daily Mail’s owner, announced bonus of 25 000 FRF or thousand GBP to the one who will be the first to cross English Channel with an airplane. Those times airplanes were not confident in the skies. The Channel
width is approximately 30 kilometers and it was a challenge for aviation at that stage. Only the most courageous and skillful pilots could decide to try. Staying in this time in Europe elder of Wright’s brothers seemed to be leader among candidates, but in the spring 1909 he decided to come back to his business in US and dropped out of the race. Thus later on Hubert Latham, dangerous adventures seeker, decided to participate on behalf of France. Gossipers told about Latham’s hanky-panky, alleging he is smoking during the flight and hardly holds steering wheel. His victory was taken without a doubt as he could stay over one hour in the air which was all time high at this time. But on this count his fortune has reversed. Only few kilometers were left to the other coast when the engine has failed and he performed emergency on-water landing.
Latham’s second attempt to reach England with his airplane was broken by Louis Bleriot. Young professional aircraft designer and experienced pilot decided to fly on his own airplane Bleriot, being his eleventh air masterpiece. On July 25th, 1909 Bleriot started airplane engine before sunrise, but he was not in a hurry to take off and had time to concentrate on victory. He enrooted only after sunrise. He was accompanied by naval ship which was left back very soon. First Louis decided he has been lost in the Channel and he was a little on the nervous side, but at least land came to horizon. He needed some time to find out an aerodrome, but he was quick on the uptake and landed at Dover. Legendary flight has taken 37 minutes! Straight after landing French pilot was surrounded with people congratulating him on his success. Louis knew only few words in English, they were “Good morning, thank you!” and he repeated and repeated these words to the people in the crowd. “English Channel is conquered!”, - announced Paris newspaper boys in summer 1909. It was the first time to cross the channel between England and France in the airplane. This victory of Bleriot was taken as the biggest achievement of mankind, facilitating interest to aviation in many countries all over the world. Louis Bleriot has got the highest award of France for his act of bravery – Legion of Honor. In England in the very monument was inlaid repeating this airplane’s silhouette. For only one month Bleriot has got hundreds of orders for his airplanes.
“ ” Pupils from all over the world were coming to the school of pilots he has established near Paris. Bleriot was followed by Frenchman Jacque Lesseps, Englishman Rolls and American womanpilot Harriet Quimby crossing English Channel with airplanes. But Louise was the one to go down to history as the inventor of the first airplane in the world conquered English Channel. Bleriot worked in aviation till his last day. He was interested in all novelties of aircraft industry and was deep to his business. Further on the trains, vessels, series bikes and bicycles would be named after him. And since 1936 light aircraft designers achieved speed, height and distance records were awarded with “Louis Bleriot Medal”.
