The Inspire Advisory Board carefully selected five finalists in each category and named one as the overall winner. As we celebrate this decade of inspiration, we invite you to explore the stories of these remarkable women.

2024 INSPIRE WOMAN OF THE YEAR Dr. Colleen Jones

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Dr. Mae Colleen Jones led a remarkable life, leaving an indelible mark on the Lincoln community Known affectionately as “Doc” or “Colleen,” she was reared in Kansas City’s 18th and Vine Jazz District, developing a strong love for the performing arts, especially jazz. An accomplished musician, she played both the accordion and piano and was actively involved with the Friends of Lied and the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra.

Colleen grew up surrounded by Black excellence, and education was always a priority. She earned a Martin Luther King full scholarship to the University of Iowa, where she risked her scholarship and expulsion by participating in a student-led protest advocating for Black students’ rights. Her courageous efforts were recognized when she was named the “Gwendolyn Brooks Scholar” for her academic excellence and social action. In 1972, she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Quantitative Analysis and later completed her MBA in Management and Finance at USC. Her career as a college administrator began as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Tennessee State University and included positions at the University of Tennessee–Knoxville and the University of Iowa, where she became the Director of Special Support Services.

Colleen and her husband Melvin met at the University of Iowa and embarked on a professional journey together, living in several cities before settling in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1982, she earned a Doctor of Business Administration degree, supported by an American Fellowship from the American Association of University Women for her research on African American women college presidents. Her passion for teaching led to memorable experiences with her students. In 2002, she founded the Melvin Jones Foundation in honor of her late husband, and in 2004, the first class of Melvin Jones Scholars began their journey at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. From that point on, Colleen became known as “Mama Jones.”

At UNL, Colleen created the Strive to Thrive Lincoln program, a unique hands-on learning experience for students in her Leading People and Projects course. Students awarded $10,000 in grants to local nonprofits, learning the intricacies of managing grant applications, reviewing proposals, and selecting winners. This project continued after her 2015 retirement and has since allocated $150,000 to Lincoln and Lancaster County nonprofits.

A world traveler and avid collector, Colleen gathered African wood carvings, Asian silk panels, porcelain Erté plates, and works from African American artists. She was also a sports enthusiast, supporting UNL athletics and playing golf herself.

Colleen was a renowned educator, entrepreneur, and consultant specializing in leadership, organizational behavior, and executive training. Her contributions to the Lincoln community were vast, serving on numerous boards and receiving prestigious awards, including the Leola Bullock Community Service Award from the NAACP and multiple teaching awards from UNL. She was also deeply involved with the Lincoln YWCA, Leadership Lincoln, the United Way, and the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra.

Dr. Jones was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and her professional and community accomplishments were recognized in multiple editions of “Who’s Who.” She also received the Joann Martin Community Leadership Award from the Lincoln Community Foundation and the Excellence in Community-Based Teaching and Scholarship Award from Campus Compact.
