Goins and Smith Anticipating Round Two As Communities are Ready to Grow By Andy Roberts
As the State of Nebraska changes leadership, with Jim Pillen succeeding Pete Ricketts as governor, two prominent African American agency directors will continue their work in state government. Economic Development Director Anthony L. Goins and Health and Human Services CEO Dannette R. Smith will remain at the helm of their respective departments. The duo are battle-tested, having helped Nebraska achieve the nation’s top-ranked pandemic response. Speaking as they prepared to celebrate Governor Pillen’s inauguration to the state’s highest office, their enthusiasm was impossible to miss. Director Goins and CEO Smith are clearly looking forward to building on what they’ve accomplished.
Goins was in full agreement. “It’s great to be her teammate,” he said. “She’s my big sister and I learn a lot from her.” While showing his appreciation for the work that’s been done, the DED director was not shy about looking forward. “I’m really excited to have the opportunity to continue,” Goins emphasized. He named insurance, vet tech, and bio tech as growing contributors to the state’s economic vitality, before circling back to the State’s top industry - agriculture. “Our economy is driven by agriculture, and we serve a governor with great experience in ag,” Goins stated.
Their retention will help the State move full speed ahead on transformative projects in North and South Omaha, aided by the presence of DED Field Offices recently established in both communities.
He praised previous Governor. Pete Ricketts for establishing a solid foundation for Nebraska, and he expressed optimism that newly elected Jim Pillen would build on the state’s recent track record of success.
“It allows DHHS, and myself, to continue the great work of the last three years,” Smith said. “I’m excited about that.” “We’re here for service,” she added, “And we enjoy what we do.”
“Our way forward is in agriculture, and it’s going to be driven by technology,” he said. “This is going to be an agriculturetechnology driven administration.”

COVID and its cousins are still terrorizing the people of this world… The theme for Black History 2023 is: Black Resistance: Past, Present, and Future. This theme comes from The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African descent. This organization was founded by the Father of Black History, Carter G. Woodson. What does this theme mean? For me it means resisting or opposing historic and ongoing oppression. It also means the refusal to comply with something; the ability not to be affected by something that is adversarial in nature. In my mind the Black Press has ALWAYS been a part of Black Resistance. As far back as Ida B. Wells, who used her publications to contest lynching, newspapers were pivotal in sharing the successful challenges of the resistance movement. The Black church also shared a voice in opposing the treatment of Blacks. Face it, Sororities, Fraternities, and Civic organizations were formed around the resistance movement. This is not a new concept, but it is relevant in 2023. How are you personally resisting? This is an important theme not only for February 2023, Black History Month, but it is appropriate to be mindful throughout the year.
Pete Ricketts, newly appointed as a Nebraska Senator, said he was pleased to see what has taken place during the transition from his administration to Pillen’s team. Ricketts applauded Gov. Pillen for keeping Goins and Smith on his staff as the State of Nebraska looks to maintain its strong momentum. “We won’t be losing any time to be able to keep moving forward to help people live better lives and keep growing the state,” Ricketts said. Pillen hailed the evening as an extraordinary night for the state. “We live in the greatest place in the world,” he said. The new governor said he’s ready to address concerns about a growing ruralurban divide in Nebraska, a long-time concern of many. “It’s really important that we have an attitudinal change,” Pillen emphasized, adding that people have to make decisions in the best interest of the state and not their own community. That, he said, begins with building relationships. While the state is in good shape financially, Pillen promised he will work to be
“fiscally responsible” and pointed out that costly surprises often await those in his position. That includes incidents like the 9-11 attacks, the flooding of 2019, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The state needs to be more aggressive in cutting taxes, he stressed, but he added that paying people better wages will also help keep young people from leaving the state. Pillen also addressed the potentially life-changing opportunities in North and South Omaha that have come with the ARPA funding and distribution of those dollars. He said the state needs to make sure the funds are used well for maximum benefit. In particular, Pillen said he wants to see kids become better educated and create a community with good jobs. “Then we can lift ourselves up,” he stated. “It’s a big deal.” With that as a backdrop, DED Director Goins pointed out one resource the state has that is unlike any other. “The real differentiator is the people of Nebraska,” Goins said. “It’s the hard work and the grit we bring to the table.” •

It’s been well over a decade now that I’ve met and kept in touch with Delon. He was one of the “shopkeepers” at The Brooklyn Circus in Brooklyn NY and we met on my of trips to the city while shopping there. Everyone at the Brooklyn Circus would treat you as if you’re a part of the “Fam” there and would present themselves in that moment as if they were your very own personal shop concierge. I remember being so happy for Delon and his coworkers as I would begin to see them in national ad campaigns online for the Varsity Jackets and sweatshirts for the brand, seeing they were on the “come up”! One by one as the various young men at the shop would mature, age, and transition it was always bittersweet for me though. I’d have to establish a new familiarity and connection with a “regular” who would remember to set aside the new article(s) for me on drop day and be ready for my phone order and shipment here to Omaha. Delon would recognize me on the phone and respond with those comforting and joyous words…”yeah you know I already got you”. The sweet part about it is EVERY one of the young men I became acquainted with at the shop transitioned to the most amazing ventures! Really…like, you’ve got to be kidding me level opportunities! This was no different for Delon! Delon is a native of Brooklyn NY and was born to a family of artists and creatives. His father, brothers, and sisters all possess the same ability to draw artistically and he intermittently worked with one of his brothers who is a skilled artisan & carpenter. So Delon being destined for the arts is classically trained and was a decorated and award winning published artist as soon as his tenure in Brooklyn High School of the Arts (BHSA) or “Brooklyn Arts”. Some of his earliest recollections of drawing as a child reminds him of his exuberance of his times cartooning and using his artistic skills as an icebreaker in social settings, eventually being known as the kid that can draw. He even leaned into his abilities as he grew up forging relationships being recognized as the artist guy so to speak. Although somewhat soft spoken and reserved in demeanor in my experiences, I couldn’t help but with the advent of social media (instagram) notice his poignant, just shy of dark sense of humor, which rarely falls short of hilarity! This would be shocking to me given his somewhat reservedness in person…which eventually made sense to me considering the old adage of “still waters running deep”. This also translates into his various artistic expressions as well! You’re rarely ever left without being made to both feel and consider what he chooses to share of his compositions or social commentary and I learned interviewing him for this piece that it’s not by accident! Delon let me know that he does absolutely nothing publicly without considerable intentionality…especially in his paintings which is his self proclaimed forte. Delon said he forwent further formal art training due to the fact that it just didn’t match up to the hands on post secondary education he was receiving right there interning at the “BKC” after school, which he said WAS his university, where he would eventually be employed. He spoke of not imagining not being around the shops day to day operations where he was being exposed to literally a global clientele, being bolstered by a global business model and practices, unparalleled standards and expectations, with a work ethic being modeled by the owner Ouigi Theodore like nothing he had ever witnessed to that point before! He further exclaims it’s a “watering hole to this day” where he with both current and former staff drop in to “reciprocate” what they’ve received from Ouigi and the shop sharing professional insights, experiences, etc…again, to this very day.
In true storied NYC fashion, after leaving the nest of the BKC and entering into the broader career terrain, Delon soon found himself (unsurprisingly to me) a concierge at a major luxury brand, coincidently a store manager for a major retailer, a corporate E-com manager for an International brand, a graphic design stint in Las Vegas, back to Brooklyn opening his very own print shop, coincidently running E-com for Zipper Stop, COVID and all that it implied and affected, collaborative work with Cruze Control Creative Agency, working on accounts with CHAMPS and Foot Locker, Her Kai & I, a Kyrie Irving apparel project / graphic design and merchandising up to February 2021, among so many other projects and collaborations without space enough to mention! The self narrated, very detailed and climactic version of this career journey will be made available via podcast here at The Omaha Star Newspaper soon! You’ve got to hear Delon speak of the ups, downs, round and rounds with the commensurate emotions to boot smh. Words cannot even describe! Which brings us to the amazing conclusion of this article… Delon still owns and operates Quick Strike Print Shop in Brooklyn NY, which currently holds a design and production account with Spike Lee’s 40 acres and a Mule amongst various other notable accounts, coincidently…LOL Delon hails to us from SLAM MAGAZINE (NYC) as the Director of Marketing of the Apparel Division! He and his staff are responsible for creating and designing the apparel, story telling, strategy of roll outs (the look/feel/ marketing of the apparel & merchandise in both print and online), and the brands’ partnerships and collaborations. [Jordan Brand/Foot Locker/Nike/Adidas] All while strategically planning for client base growth and expansion. I told Delon how absolutely exhausting it sounded hearing of all it took for him to make this journey to the upper ranks in the media industry, coupled with how much work he’s yet involved in. I asked him of career opportunities with there seemingly being so much work needing to be done and available…and his response was shocking! Delon asserts that there’s a scarcity of personnel due to not only the residual consequences of the pandemic, but there just not being enough individuals entering the workforce that are willing to come into the industry on the ground level and be dedicated enough to actually work their way up the ranks, which is more probable and achievable then not! He said employees enter the industry immediately desiring the “shine” positions and scoff at the “grunt work” it may take to catapult them there. It’s his assertion that there’s actually more work than hire at this point. When I asked Delon if he’s taken the time to enjoy all that he’s accomplished at such a young age (now midupper 30’s )…he said he hadn’t taken the time to estimate it as he was doing in real time during our hour long interview, but Oh the accomplished journey it is and is yet becoming!

He did say perhaps the most rewarding thing for him to date is that ALL of his youthful dreaming, imagining, and conceptualizing that he’d now share from corporate opportunity to corporate opportunity were FINALLY given a platform thanks to Les Green, the CEO of SLAM MAGAZINE. They ideas materializing just as he had artistically dreamed! “I wasn’t crazy, these ideas are working, they found a home here at SLAM MAGAZINE, it’s an amazing work environment and a great place where you can grow professionally, it’s working!” Opportunity abounds young people! The Reverend Jesse Jackson and the Reverend Al Sharpton had an impact on the Ahmaud Arbery trial just by their attendance at the trial. These community activists believed it was necessary to attend the Arbery trial to watch the judicial system. The “court watch” was so disturbing that the white attorneys defending the murderers complained about the attendance of Jackson and Sharpton although all court rooms are open to the public to watch court proceedings. Apparently from the response Jackson and Sharpton received some racist people do not want Blacks attending public court hearings which is all the more reason for Blacks to attend court hearings in every court in the nation on a volunteer basis. The Black community celebrity activists such as Jackson and Sharpton attending the high profile Arbery case should not be the only case Blacks in our community volunteer to watch.
If Black people participate in a “court watch” the judicial racism will go down just ask Jackson and Sharpton! The old African saying is it “It takes a village to raise a child.”
Since the United States has five percent of the world’s population but we jail twenty-five percent of the world’s prison population why don’t more people, especially black people, attend public court hearings even if they don’t have a relative involved in the hearing?
Just like Jackson and Sharpton, it also takes an army of retired African American volunteers to go down to the public courtrooms on a volunteer basis to participate in a “court watch” to eliminate racism in the judicial system.
As an African American Attorney with more than 20 years of experience in the Douglas County Court system the racism in the court system may go down significantly if Blacks attend court.
As Jackson and Sharpton have proved in their attendance of the Arbery trial that when blacks attend court to observe the level of racism goes down.
I know one retired African American who attends court on a weekly basis my friend Kay. If Harriet Tubman was alive she would probably be sitting right next to Kay in court. Is my good friend Kay the only Harriet Tubman amongst us?
Jailing black men in record numbers is the new slavery! My community activist friend who is a numbers guy says we have to scientifically analyze the data to prove a theory that a court watch” has an impact on the racism in the judicial system! No! We don’t need numbers we need volunteers! No numbers were kept of the attendance of Jackson and Sharpton but they changed the racism in the Arbery trial!
The NAACP and the Urban League should create a national volunteer “court watch” program to eliminate racism in the court system. Just as Kay, Jackson and Sharpton attend court, every retired African American should attend a court hearing at least once a month to decrease the racism in the court system by participating in a “court watch.” •

It’s encouraging to see a hunger and thirst for God By Billy Holland
There is a move of the Holy Spirit happening in Wilmore Kentucky where the small evangelical Asbury University and Seminary are located. As the regular chapel service began Wednesday morning in Hughes Auditorium, it was not long before things became extraordinary. Many students did not leave and continued to worship as the band kept playing. The message that morning focused on confession, repentance, and how true love for God and others is more than just words. News traveled quickly and soon more students started coming in. Many said they felt the power of God drawing them to examine their hearts and make a fresh commitment to Christ. College students have joined in from other colleges including the University of Kentucky as Christians from other states are making the journey to experience this 24/7 manifestation of God’s presence. It is not known at this time how long this outpouring will last, but there has definitely been a lot of excitement in the last five days. The crowds are growing as the worship, praying, reading scriptures, and personal testimonies of God’s power are generating faith and a glimpse of what the normal Christian life should be like. Asbury president Kevin Brown spoke on John 17 Friday night, a passage that calls for unity.
“So when people see us, they see one accord. For this generation, for the church, for the world, the edification of our neighbor, and the glory of God. This is not an Asbury thing, this is a kingdom of God thing.” Saturday night all 1500 seats were taken with many people standing around the walls. When the Asbury website started posting daily updates, soon the site had so much traffic it crashed. Growing numbers watching the live stream are sending prayers not just from around the country, but also from places like Paraguay, Indonesia, Africa, Australia, and India. The editor of the School Newspaper said, “We are encouraging each other to have this posture of radical humility. We are trying to understand God’s love in a greater way. It’s not about us, it’s about Jesus and I believe this is why it continues.” Some of the older generations may remember another outpouring here in February 1970. It began when the Dean at that time invited students to share their testimonies and miraculously, the worship and praying lasted for 144 hours straight. Classes were canceled for the week and many traveled around the country sharing about what God had done in their midst. Another comment from a news site, “We see depravity now in America, every day, wherever we look. It’s encouraging to see young people on their knees in prayer. May this revival spread like wildfire across this land. America has never been in deeper trouble. Lord help us.” I have written about revival in the past and it can mean several things like renewal, awakening, restora-
tion, repentance, or making alive again. It’s associated with those who once were on fire for God but they have drifted away into what is called a cold or lukewarm state of being spiritually lethargic. To be revived means to be convicted by hearing God’s truth and seeing the need to be reignited in our passion to be completely sold out to Jesus. In Revelation chapter two we see the letter to the church at Ephesus where Jesus said, “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love.” He is saying that when Christ is at the top of our priority list, our love for Him will blaze like a roaring fire. However, when we allow the cares of the world and our carnality to become more important than our relationship with Him, we become ashamed and nonchalant like smoldering embers. Revival is a gift of God’s grace and yet the only thing that is preventing it from happening anywhere is an attitude of our heart. It begins when someone wants to become a living sacrifice for God. What does this mean? It means the realization that living holy is how we please Him. Our gratitude and love for Him is not just about what He can do, it’s for who He is. You do not know that God is all you need until you realize He is all you have. He’s either the Lord of “all” of your life or He is not really your Lord at all. Mandela Welcomes New Assistant Principal We are proud and excited to announce our new Assistant Principal is our very own Ms. Bianca Sherman. Bianca Sherman is currently a 4th grade teacher here at Nelson Mandela. She began at Nelson Mandela as a second grade teacher and spent three years with that grade. Prior to that, her teaching career began in Omaha Public Schools where she also taught 4th grade. Bianca Sherman is a North Omaha native. She obtained her Bachelors of Science in Education with a minor in Black Studies from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. She will be graduating with her Master of Science of Education School Administration at the end of the year. Both of her daughters Laila and Zhuri attend Nelson Mandela as well. Ms. Sherman would like to share: “I began my journey as a Mandela Meerkat 4.5 years ago, and it was one of the best decisions I have made! I strongly believe I was called to Nelson Mandela because of my commitment and my belief in the mission. I give credit to my experience here for allowing me to challenge myself to reach my full potential and now to serve our scholars, families, and team in a leadership role. I am honored, proud, and overjoyed that I have been selected as the Assistant Principal at Nelson Mandela. The growth and wealth of knowledge that I have gained and the relationships that I have developed with our scholars and families here inspires me to continue to build up our scholars and instill in them that: “Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world.” -Nelson Mandela •
