COVID…need I say anymore…it is still with us. I have had several experiences in and about our community that I want to share. This week I was a proponent for LB455 and testified before the education committee. This bill is in support of a grant to distribute reading materials/ newspapers statewide to elementary aged school children. Not being an educator, I was surprised to learn that some students do not have the skill set to know to turn the page when reading because in this day and age everything is digital. No need to turn a page when you can scroll to get information, no book necessary. When I understood the magnitude of this statement I was saddened. Our children are so technology bound it is not common sense good. Think about this. If you have children in your lives, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give them a book to read and have them to read to you and/or you read with them. As the saying goes, reading is fundamental. While it seems “old school” it is vital in our society. Opera Omaha welcomes to our city Allison Swenson, General Director of the company. Beginning Feb. 27, the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN) will accept proposals — the second round in a series of funding cycles — to bolster the state’s behavioral health workforce. The application cycle closes on April 10 with funding awards likely to be announced in June. (Access the online application.) In 2022, the Nebraska Legislature allocated $25.5 million in American Recovery Plan Act (ARPA) funding to BHECN. In turn, BHECN is awarding the funding through a competitive process to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the shortage of behavioral health professionals in our state. Earlier this year, BHECN announced 83 awards totaling nearly $20 million. New applications as well as revised proposals from the first application cycle can be submitted during this round. “The pandemic highlighted and exacerbated the urgent need to strengthen our state’s behavioral health workforce,” said Marley Doyle, MD, director of BHECN. “We welcome all organizations and

providers to apply for funding to help us improve access to behavioral health care in Nebraska.” Funding will be distributed through a competitive request for proposal process based on four major areas: • Telebehavioral health support in rural areas: Projects should increase access to behavioral health care through telebehavioral services. There is $2.2 million available for projects in this category. Project awards in this category are capped at $1 million this round. • Behavioral health training opportunities: Projects should provide training and clinical experience opportunities for behavioral health graduate students, trainees and professionals. There is $400,000 available for projects in this category with project awards capped at $75,000. • Behavioral health workforce projects for students and behavioral health professionals: Projects should relate to behavioral health issues caused or exacerbated by the COVID-19 public health emergency. Projects

in this award category should focus on providing educational programs, recruitment and retention projects, and research related to the behavioral health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is $400,000 available for projects in this category with project awards capped at $50,000. • Funding for licensed behavioral health supervisors currently employed in Nebraska: Projects should support supervision costs as organizations/providers supervise provisionally licensed, behavioral health professionals. There is $300,000 available for projects in this category with project awards capped at $100,000. All Nebraska organization/providers are eligible to apply for the awards. Applicants can request funding for up to three years. (ARPA funding expires Dec. 31, 2025.) •

College of Saint Mary President Dr. Maryanne Stevens, RSM, will be honored by the NEBRASKAland Foundation on March 4 during the annual Statehood Day Dinner held in the State Capitol Rotunda. Dr. Stevens will receive the 2023 Distinguished NEBRASKAlander Award. “This award is presented to Nebraskans who have distinguished themselves in service and recognition of our state’s social, historical, cultural, or economic wellbeing,” Gov. Jim Pillen said in a letter to Dr. Stevens. Pillen serves as the foundation’s honorary chair. “Your leadership, vision, and commitment to Nebraska are worthy of recognition.” Other honorees include Secretary Chuck Hagel of Arlington, Va., and Sen. John and Rita Stinner of Gering, Neb. “I’m honored to receive this prestigious award and be included in the company of such outstanding Nebraskans who have been recognized before me,” Dr. Stevens said. Dr. Stevens is CSM’s longest-serving president. She plans to retire after 27 years at the University on June 30. Under Dr. Stevens’ guidance, CSM has developed several innovative programs, specifically, a residence hall allowing college-age single mothers to live with their children on campus; Marie Curie scholarships for low-income women majoring in math or science; the Latina and African-American Summer Academies for high school girls; graduate programs in education, physician assistant studies, occupational therapy, kinesiology and organizational leadership as well as a unique doctoral program in physical therapy. Dr. Stevens’ passion for education and advancement of women cannot be more evidenced than by her leadership

of numerous capital campaigns and scholarship initiatives that have allowed CSM to take its rightful place in the regional landscape of higher education. Most recently, CSM completed a $40 million Striding Forward Campaign in just four years, allowing for growth in the endowment, new scholarships, and the building of an addition to its fitness center. Affordability and transparency have always been important to Dr. Stevens. In 2013, all student fees were rolled into the tuition so students knew what they would pay. And in the fall of 2017, CSM slashed undergraduate tuition by 33%, or approximately $10,000. The move was in accordance with the institution’s mission of providing access and affordability to women who seek higher education. As a result, students borrow less and follow more direct – and cost-effective – paths to their careers. Since the tuition reset, students’ average annual loan borrowings decreased 43% from $11,224 to $6,357. This year, Dr. Stevens is raising money to respond to a $2 million challenge grant from the Harper Family Foundation to provide nursing students with a debt-free path. Dr. Stevens serves on several community and national boards, including the Council of Independent Nebraska Colleges, Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, Nebraska Educational Finance Authority, Council of Independent Nebraska Colleges Foundation, the Tri-Faith Initiative, and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities. •

Symone Sanders-Townsend rose to prominence in 2016 as the national press secretary for U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders’s thenpresidential campaign. Small, Diverse, and Women-Owned Construction Firms Could Benefit from Free Private Sector Mentor Training Programs By Joel A. Cota

The AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry, and to a higher degree construction, is suffering from a persistent and severe workforce shortage and construction companies struggle to fill salaried and skilled labor positions at all levels in the industry. However, a segment of smaller construction businesses, predominantly minority and women-owned, does exist. If fostered, trained, and mentored, these smaller construction businesses could go a long way to filling the workforce resource gap. Through collaborative training and mentoring development programs, private construction companies are changing this narrative and increasing capacity by training and mentoring diverse, small-emerging, and women-owned construction businesses to grow and step up to the next level. This type of partnership is urgent and necessary to ensure that diverse, small-emerging, and women-owned construction firms receive the training, experience, mentoring, and resources to collaborate and work with larger firms. This approach helps mitigate the risk and remove the barriers that have historically blocked these construction companies from expanding and growing their businesses. These training development programs also help increase workforce capacity within the industry, support the socioeconomic development of local communities and businesses, and contribute to the betterment and growth of their local communities. These collaborative partnerships also play a critical role in advancing and increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the billion-dollar Omaha construction sector, which has lagged behind other industries in minority participation. According to the City of Omaha’s annual “Building and Development Summary”, the total estimated value of build-

ing permits issued by the Planning Department in 2021 climbed to approximately $1.15 billion, one of the highest yearly amounts on record for the city of Omaha, and the expected data for 2022 will probably be even stronger. One remarkable example of how private training programs will be preparing small, minority, and womenowned construction-related construction companies for future growth in Omaha, NE., is the JE Dunn’s Minority Contractor Development (MCD) program. JE Dunn is launching the Minority Contractor Development (MCD) Program this Spring in Omaha. This training program is their longstanding commitment to helping small, emerging businesses, minority-owned, and women-owned businesses succeed. The firm understands its role in helping contractor companies grow and succeed in the construction industry. Through its Minority Contractor Development (MCD) program, the firm has been able to train small, emerging businesses, minority-owned, and women contractors from around the country in the business and leadership skills needed to compete in the construction industry. The MCD program goal is to identify small, emerging businesses, minority-owned, and women-owned construction business enterprises (M/WBE) and provide them with education and training that would help grow individuals and companies and expand the overall capacity of the area in a way that will lift and build the local underserved community. The firm promoted the MCD program in December and January, and forty-plus representatives attended their open house on January 11th. The number of minority-owned firms applying to enroll in the MCD program is thirteen contractors. Free of charge for participants, the MCD program is com-

posed of small, emerging businesses, minority-owned, and women-owned business enterprises (M/WBE) that will be selected through an application and interview process. The Minority Contractor Development (MCD) Program is a series of classes and activities designed to educate and equip minority and women-owned contractors for success, help grow their businesses, and launch a partnership with JE Dunn. The program’s curriculum is structured in monthly sessions. The courses typically cover topics including mock bids, project leadership, estimating, policies and procedures, and more. After participants have completed the training program, they will celebrate their hard work with a graduation ceremony. Not only is the MCD program intended to prepare small businesses for success in the construction industry, but one vital purpose is to provide them with the chance to work with JE Dunn professionals and gain access to additional support and resources outside of the classroom. The firm’s aspirational goal is to work with seventy-five percent of its MCD graduates in the future. The firm is not just providing the skills they need now for success, but they are also creating the opportunity for long-lasting collaborative relationships on upcoming construction projects. The leadership team at the firm is forecasting that next year the number of recruits will grow significantly due to greater awareness of the MCD program and current and former students spreading the word about its positive impact on their businesses. With a greater emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and social equity in our society, training construction programs like the JE Dunn MCD program, will meet the challenges by providing new and rewarding opportunities for diverse and women-owned construction companies seeking to build their businesses and communities. •

A Message for MY people By Sherman Wells, Columnist

I know everyone has a story so in this introduction, I won’t get too deep into mine. I will say this… as long as you are blessed to wake up every day that’s your chance to create your life. The way you deal with the things that happen in your life will determine the way you live your life. YOU determine who you are, not what you go through, NOT what you were born into.

My name is Sherman Wells and I’m the new kid on the block, well not a kid lol I’m 46 yrs old, and I will be 47 on March 20th the first day of spring. Born in Omaha Ne to my mother Sandra Wells and my Father Virgil Davis I am the youngest of 3. Some people have the privilege to be born amongst people, however, I and my sisters were born in the gutter with Master Splinter and the Ninja Turtles. The energy and strength will it took for us to just get to the street level and begin to live a “normal life” was draining and almost killed us. As I look around the UnitedStates I see a bunch of us living based on what we were TAUGHT to be, not who we OUGHT to be. Since this is the only Black-owned

newspaper in Nebraska I’m addressing Black people. It’s 2023 and we are up against a well-oiled killing machine of Black self-hatred. That’s right, well- oiled, why? It doesn’t need extra maintenance the hate maintains itself. Because we have educated Blacks vs uneducated Blacks, religious Blacks vs non-religious Blacks, radical Blacks vs conscious Blacks, political Backs vs street Blacks, young Blacks vs seasoned Blacks, etc…when the common denominator that should stop it all is WE BLACK. How can we ever move forward in our community while operating as a well-oiled killing machine of Black self-hatred? We can’t, so the point of this column is to share my thoughts on how we can mentally erase what divides us and embrace what makes us stronger and that’s the love for each other being Black!!! •

God is waiting to pour out His glory on us By Billy Holland

Last week we talked about the recent revival in Wilmore Kentucky. Anytime there are 1500 people in one place worshiping God around the clock, we know the Lord is stirring hearts. We had a trip to Denver planned last week, but I was able to attend three different times before we left and it was very humbling to see a hunger for God on this level. We sang “I Exalt Thee” and you could sense God was there. I mentioned recently that spiritual moves of God’s glory have nothing to do with geographical locations, but rather are manifested within those who simply want more of Him. Until our flesh is disciplined by our will and the Holy Spirit is given control to lead us into submitting to Him, there is no spiritual advancement. When we fall deeply in love with God and are no longer embarrassed to stand boldly for Him, there is no limit to what can be accomplished for His glory. While observing what was happening before my eyes, I wondered why do we not see this attitude of repentance and worship in every church every week. A genuine excitement for God should be present within every follower of Christ, however, many of us are not as consistent as we should be. Often we settle for mediocrity by just living for God when we feel like it. We realize that we can be filled with His Spirit, but if do not maintain our relationship with Him, the fervor of our love and the strength of our joy can leak which will leave us weak and weary. If we could maintain our zeal for God, we would not need to be revived, but for most of us, this is not the case. One day we are on the mountain and the next day we are exhausted, sad, and need encouragement.

I was raised in a church where they would schedule a revival by inviting a guest speaker to hold special meetings for a few days. There was anticipation about what God might do. People would invite their lost loved ones and, those who had drifted away from the Lord in the hopes and prayers they would be saved or restored in their relationship with Christ. We used to sing an old hymn that said, “Send a great revival in my soul, let the Holy Spirit come and take control.” This is a great song and asking God for a personal awakening is wonderful, but there is always repentance and fervent prayer involved. In other words, I do not see a powerful move in our lives while we are playing video games. The Bible mentions in Romans 12:1-2 about being a living sacrifice, but usually, we would rather do a good deed instead of yielding our will. A devoted life of allowing God to possess us will cost us more than we can imagine. If we are seeking a deeper more meaningful relationship with Christ, we are promised that if we seek Him, we will find Him. So what gives us this desperate hunger and thirst for God? Fasting is not popular, but it shows that we are serious about being closer to Him. James 4:8 promises, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” If we really want to be on fire for God, let us remember we can live as close to God as we choose. We do not need to travel any further than our conscience to discover He is always waiting to pour out His glory on us. • Learn more about the Christian life at billyhollandministries.com

The Azusa Street Revival was a historic series of meetings that took place in Los Angeles and was led by William J. Seymour an African-American preacher. The revival began on April 9, 1906, and continued until roughly 1915. On the first night, Seymour and seven men were praying and waiting on God on Bonnie Brae Street, when suddenly, as though hit by a bolt of lightning, they were knocked from their chairs to the floor. The men began to shout and praise God as they were filled with the Holy Spirit. The news quickly spread, the city was stirred, crowds gathered and services were moved outside to accommodate the people who came from all around. Those who attended were so overwhelmed by the power of God’s presence they could not stop weeping as manifestations were evident such as individuals being delivered from evil spirits, and the sick were healed.
