LA GRAN TENOCHTITLAN- EL CENTRO DE LA NACIÓN

The Historic Center of Mexico City has been one of the most valuable places in Mesoamerica from its origins as the center of the earth where God Huitzilopochtli said, according to Mexican mythology, who was to found the new kingdom as described in the Name of Mexico (Moon Navel Center or universe). Here Mexica settled building a city on the lake, called “Tenochtitlan” which to date remains the center of the Capital City of Mexico with more than 1,500 historic buildings, designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1987.

MEXICAN IDENTITY This site has been buried almost entirely during the time of the Spanish conquest and colonization (1521-1810), is to build the metro public transport system in 1967 when discovered and begins to excavate and restore, but only partially. Current Constitution Square is a place where trade policies and social activities are carried out without apparent order to devalue the historical and cultural value that is instead owns and which was called, in all fairness and admiration, the “City of Palaces. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has under its shelter a total of 187 open to the public in archaeological sites throughout the country, but only 4 of them are Mexico City, which are rarely visited (Cuicuilco, Tlatelolco, Cerro largest temple and Star). The saturation of the street trade is one of the major problems facing this site, the Seminary streets, Money, Justo Sierra and many others are severely affected vehicular and pedestrian mobility for this reason. The weight of history and grandeur of the historic center are perceived but nevertheless severely diminished. That’s why an intervention to integrate two cities from different periods that are part of the history and development of what we now know as Mexico consider necessary.

Set the Constitution Square as a place dedicated to Mexicanidad where the greatest symbol representing us as Mexicans are in (... ordered them where they founded their kingdom saw “an eagle on a cactus devouring a snake”.) Is going be “La Plancha del Zocalo” to “The center of the nation.” Designing spaces that magnify and highlight the symbols of the Mexica culture and provide the basis for the existence of a reunion with the current Mexican population that subsequently becomes the identity and culture that deserves respect by their descendants. Identify and unify the archaeological site via an underground route that allows access to the ancient temples and ceremonial centers without damaging existing buildings of the Colonial City. Integrating the two cities. Strategic connections are proposed, using disused buildings and listed as “high structural risk” for rehabilitation and work to provide basic services to the underground tour.

THE SQUARE The project is the current lack of nationalism among Mexicans. It is proposed to amend the Plaza de la Constitución (Zócalo) to make this a space dedicated to the Nation. A place where the mythology and history of the origins of Mexico to focus and connect the two cultures through a museum located in the basement of the plaza. As a major national monument is the eagle which is the starting point of our culture and it is unique in the world. The trace of the four pre-Hispanic roads is taken up leaving the monument in the center, also water element that is essential to be a city founded Tenochtitlan on a lake. Flag moves, without taking priority creating a separate entrance and one that connects to our national symbol without changing the role of the participant who is civically.
