Pastoral wings of love Missionary visit of the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Theodore to the Congo All the orthodox Christians of the Holy Metropolis of Central Africa are particularly happy because we were honored by Gracious God’s providence to accept the blessing and wishes of His Beatitude Patriarch of Alexandria Theodore B’. His presence, his prayers, his paternal advice and manifestations of his warm heart benefited everyone spiritually, our faithful, our priests, our students, the schoolchildren, our Holy Metropolis. His Beatitude arrived at the missionary premises of Kananga on October 19th.From the festivities that took place in his honor, it appeared that the schools had a high level of studies and oper|4

ated perfectly. The Patriarch marveled at the well made school installations and being particularly happy, contacted the teachers and students personally and blessed them all. Also, he conducted the inauguration of the magnificent multi-domed holy church of Saint Andrew. Immediately after his coming to Kinshasa, went to the H.C. of Saint Nicholas of the Greek Community and conducted o doxology in the presence of plenty of officials and a large number of Congolese orthodox, who had come to see “the Patriarch of love”, as they called him. The president of the country

Mr Joseph Kabila honored him particularly and did him the honors of head of state. The Patriarch met with the representatives of the national parliament, plenty of ministers and parliamentary members, to whom he presented the huge philanthropic as well as social work conducted by the Patriarchate of Alexandria throughout Africa. His Beatitude visited the Theological School of the Orthodox University of Kinshasa. Our students and a large number of people, Orthodox and catechumens, welcomed him with great joy. His

Beatitude was shown around the school installations, which functions as a boarding school at the same time, expressed his satisfaction for the order and the way it is organized and praised the work committed by the Theological School, which is of utmost importance to Orthodoxy. His Beatitude attended the Divine Liturgy, which was conducted at the H. C. of Saint Athanasios the Athonite, and marveled at the beautiful choir singing. He warmheartedly thanked the Orthodox Missionary Fraternity for its 50-year- work of continuous offer to the Patriarchate of

Alexandria and especially to the Holy Metropolis of Central Africa and the Orthodox School of Theology in Kinshasa. Also, His Beatitude visited the missionary center at the region of Kasangulu, where there is an orthodox school and a beautiful church in the same place in honor of memorable Chrysostom Papasarantopoulos. The Patriarch was particularly happy and blessed the children and the teachers. Another stop of pastoral visit was the parish of Saint Mark in Kinshasa, where the faithful celebrated the Patriarch’s visit with traditional dances and songs. They

|6

felt his pure heart and God’s presence through his blessing. In the same place, His Beatitude visited the schools of our Metropolis, which were built by the Greek Community of Kinshasa, and on the occasion of his visit were given to operation. The teachers and students of Saint Mark’s school organized a great celebration in honor of the Patriarch. With great joy and enthusiasm the children sang the national anthems of Greece and Congo in Greek and French as well as traditional songs. The joy of the Patriarch and everyone present was apparent. It would be an omission not to mention the special priest- gather-

ing that His Beatitude called at the offices of our Holy Metropolis. The Patriarch addressed the priests paternal words of advice and exhortation so that they perform their pastoral as well as missionary duties with a lot of love, ardent zeal and a strong sense of responsibility. These words made the priests rejoice, and strengthened their faith. In conclusion, the pastoral and missionary visit of our Patriarch was particularly useful spiritually for our Holy Metropolis. It was a cool breeze of blessing and consolation of the Holy Spirit. It was also an important stop of “spiritual refueling” and support for all of us.

It was a unique chance through which the pious and multiform spiritual and philanthropic work of the Patriarchate was projected intensely not only before the Government but also through television. For all the blessings which we experienced, we address cordial entreaties to the Triune God and heartfelt thanks to our father Pope and Patriarch Theodore for honoring us with his visit to the missionary Metropolis of Central Africa, which we humbly serve by divine grace and our Patriarch’s blessings. With wishes and love in the Lord Nikiphoros of Central Africa

Patriarchal travelogue in Congo Brazzaville On 29thOctober His Beatitude Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa arrived in Brazzaville for his first pastoral visit being spiritually responsible for the newly established Diocese of Congo (Brazzaville)- Gabon. He was welcomed at the port of the river Congo with all due respect by the ones in charge and the clergy of our Diocese as well as by the Minister of Internal Affairs of the country, the Ambassadors of Greece, Russia and Egypt, our Consul General in Kinshasa and our Honorary Consul in Brazzaville. After a short but warm welcome at the parish of Resurrection, he moved towards his hotel apparently tired having completed a long tour at the Diocese of Katangas and at the Diocese of Central Africa.

|8

On the same afternoon in a warm atmosphere he was accepted by the President of the country, his Excellency Mr Denis Sassou Nguesso, whom he thanked for his support of the Orthodox Church and honored him with the Grand Cross and the Star of Saint Mark. The tour of His Beatitude lasted until Saturday the 3rd of November. We welcomed him as a Bishop and Patriarch with all our love and every possible sacrifice, even surpassing our abilities. Wherever he went, he was expected by our faithful with great reverence and enthusiasm. He also had the chance to meet and honor several officials. He was particularly pleased with his meetings with the congregation at all three parishes of

Pointe-Noire. At the oldest of our parishes, he made a “prophetic” movement by taking little Theologos, the vicar’s son (Father Lawrence) and by giving him his crosier to hold while referring to the future of the local Church. Also, during his visit to the Church of Saint Fotini, which he himself had founded in 2007, he thanked the Lord for the recent donation of the Holy Diocese of Nea Smyrni for the completion of its roof. In addition, he blessed the foundation stone of our new clinic in a suburb of the town, a generous offer of the missionary team of F. Nicholas Marketos from Sydney, Australia. He was also enthusiastic over watching a concert performed by the choirs of various parishes of the country. With the Patriarch’s exhortation, on the 1st of November there was Divine Liturgy that was conducted at Saint Demetrios Church (our Cathedral). During the liturgy, he ordained deacon a real worker of the Gospel, Jean-Marie Magloire, and laid his hands on fourteen readers from all the parishes of our Diocese. On 2nd November, having arrived in Dolisie by plane the day before, he celebrated at the school “Light of Nations”, which was built 9|

on his exhortation, among our 350 students with songs and sketches participating in their enthusiasm and giving them his blessing along with a rich breakfast. A special moment for us was when he blessed with holy water the buildings of our monastery, our lake, and the prospective monks, so that the local Church can have the blessing of respiring the spiritual oxygen of monasticism. The cypress, which he himself planted, coming from the cell of Elder Paisios, will be urging us to follow in his footsteps.

|10

Then he exhausted all his love on our children, the orphans, who he met again after five years since the opening day of the Orphanage, and shared with them moments of joy as well as their meal (well looked-after due to the celebration) and their songs. We know that he left content. We hope his prayers will help us give a God-sent solution to the big problems which we are facing, now that he has seen them and got close to them himself. Fr. Theologos Chysanthacopoulos

INDIA We believe we could not thank you enough for your invaluable contribution. In these financially hard times that we are going through, it is a great relief for us to know that you stand by us in our struggle, to feel that despite the distance between us, you are by our side in our efforts to maintain the smile and hope of our orphans, boys and girls. We feel that you share our anxiety for the present and the future of the philanthropic work of the Mission in India, which we are trying to protect from the instability caused due to the economic crisis. Your slightest contribution is invaluable to the survival of the street children, the continuation of the midday common meal for the homeless and the amputees, the maintenance of our 5 surgeries

and the 5 schools in remote poor villages. However, we were obliged to close down 4 surgeries. Unfortunately, we had no other choice. In this financial depression and insecurity which each one of you is probably experiencing in their personal life, the fact that you choose once more to support us, reveals not only your generous heart but also your trust in the wise management of your donation. In such hard times your small contribution becomes invaluable, since it springs from real “gold’, love, the most important value of Christian life, which is not very demanding, it just asks for our kind-heartedness. With love in Christ, Sister Nektaria 11|

INDONESIA

Fruition of Patience Dear brothers, Rejoice in the Lord. With God’s help, we are well. I would like to tell you a few things about our Mission here in Sumatra. We managed to keep running all our educational institutions this year too, from the primary school to the Theological School. From them, which you yourselves have made, lots of young Orthodox people have graduated. Our hospital in Medan, Theotokos, is operating normally and offers any kind of help to the sick. However, the responsibility I bear for it is extremely big. How can I organize this hospital which is in need of so many things? The only income we have is the little money paid by the poor patients for hospital costs. |12

Here in Indonesia, there is lack of priests, that is why we cannot do a great deal of spiritual work since we cannot serve everyone adequately. At least, we make great efforts in order to have permanent resources for our fund and be able to continue this pleasing to God mission. Two years ago, as you probably remember, we bought, through the assistance of the Orthodox Missionary Fraternity, a few fields in the mountainous village of Sumbul. This year we planted pepper and potatoes and- thank God- we had a good harvest and we got good prices. However, there are too many needs to be covered. Thank God, the financial support which you send us from time to time is of great help. We use most of this money to cover the following needs:

• At the Theological School of Apostle Paul in Medan, we employ a staff of 10 people (secretaries, librarians, cleaners, one watchman) and 17 teachers, who serve 450 students every day. • At the Computers Academy in Medan, we have 5 employees and 20 teachers who serve 460 students on a daily basis. • At the have 4

School of Saint Nikitas in Medan, we employees, 15 teachers and 350 students.

• At the have 3

School of Saint Nicholas in Nias, we employees, 12 teachers and 90 students.

• At the Medan Hospital we employ 8 people as auxiliary staff, 10 nurses and 2 doctors. The rest of the doctors are outworkers. • At the Holy Convent of Theotokos in Medan lives Sister Agnes. This convent is very small and cannot afford to cover its expenses, such as electricity, water and daily needs. That is why we have to take care of it as well.

In "Theotokos" Hospital

In addition, the running expenses increase if I go to the rest of our communities in order to perform a mystery, or when I am called by the government to go to Jakarta about the schools or our Church. Then, the expenses increase even more since we have to cover the plane fares and the hotel accommodation as well. Moreover, another main problem is that soon the operation license is going to expire. The amount of money required for a renewal is 3,000 €, So far we haven’t been able to find donors. Pray for us to find the money because we are in a very difficult position.

|14

Now, you are aware of the big burden we have to carry. Thank God, you have been by our side in all the difficult projects of our mission from the very beginning. The Orthodox people of Indonesia are grateful to you for your undivided support. I believe in our Good God, and I am absolutely convinced that your contributions are not wasted but sooner or later they will bear fruit in Glory of our Holy Trinity. That’s all our news, my brothers. May God, the source of all goods, reward you lavishly. Father Chrysostomos Manalu

Opportunities to praise and offer The missionary work at the H.M. of Central Africa by divine grace and despite the numerous difficulties, through your wishes and support- material as well as spiritual- is progressing. The difficulties and the problems that we have to face daily are many. However, Gracious God never abandons us. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for the support and aid which you offer to us. May God bless you all. Allow me to inform you about the following subjects: Scholarships of poor and orphan students By God’s grace, the Holy Metropolis grants scholarships to very poor students and orphan children so that they can study at the university schools in Kinshasa and in other cities as well. Among these schools is our Orthodox Theological School, too. However, due to the economic crisis our Holy Metropolis cannot afford to pay for the poor and orphans’ tuition, and there

is the danger of the children breaking off their studies. We would be grateful if there were donors through your fraternity who could support these young people through the educational sponsorship program. Christenings Our work of catechism is getting on well. A lot of Congolese express the desire to become Orthodox. Our catechizing teams, which consist of faithful 15|

members of our Metropolis and particularly students from our Theological School, are working feverishly. Pretty soon we are planning to have christenings. If you have names of donors who want to give orthodox names, we are expecting to know them. Progress of works As regards the progress of the works which you are funding, we would like to tell you the following:

left is the painting, the iconostasis and the floor. I would also like to mention that it was particularly difficult for this work to reach this level of completion due to the fact that the site of the church is approximately 800, 000 km away from the capital, therefore, there were plenty of difficulties in carrying the building material.

arch of Alexandria and all Africa Theodore on the occasion of his missionary and pastoral tour in Congo laid the foundations of the Holy Church. The purchase of the plot and the funding of the Holy Church were undertaken by the Orthodox Missionary Fraternity, which the Patriarch remembered and thanked. We are ready to start, after we have settled a few minor matters of technical nature first. ď‚…Nikiphoros of Central Africa

GHANA

Routes of love in Guinea Dear Mister President, Rejoice in the Lord! Following our cordial meeting at your Fraternity offices, I am sending you photographs of the 50-seat -coach which we would like to send to West Africa to run the intercity routes in Guinea, where we will soon have the first presence of Orthodoxy with the erection of a school. With the revenues coming from the coach routes, we will be able to cover a big part of the expenses of our Mission, such as salaries of priests and teachers and many others. Due to the economic crisis which is plaguing our country, it is absolutely essential that we find new resources, like the one |18

mentioned above. The purchase of such a coach comes to 8,000â‚Ź and I hope that our request will be met, since you always stand by us, support us and share our efforts and struggle. I will soon send you information on the progress of the projects you have undertaken in Ghana. With love in Christ, ď‚…George, Bishop of Accra

In the service of education With God's grace and the help of the Orthodox Missionary Fraternity in Thessaloniki, we completed the construction of the computer laboratory in St. Peter's vocational school in Larte, Ghana. Despite the difficult circumstances and the many problems our country faces, the Fraternity members managed to collect the necessary funds for the erection of the laboratory and what's more: soon the construction of a science laboratory will start. The computer lab came to supplement the deficiencies of St. Peter's School and make it

one of the best schools of the Larte province. 200 young men and women currently attend the school and there are hundreds of requests by candidates. Within the school, there is a Church of the Resurrection of our Lord; among other subjects the students are taking religious education classes and every Sunday after the Divine Liturgy there is a Sunday school for them. All students are offered a meal and most of them are offered free housing in the dorms. ď‚…George of Accra

MALAWI

Miraculous events! Dear brothers, rejoice in the Lord! I am writing to you once more from the Mission of Malawi in order to thank you for your valuable support. I would also like to thank you for your kind offer, which helped us to build the house of the priest at the Holy Church of Resurrection in Blandyre as well as equip the church with furniture, holy vessels, holy vestments, books and all the necessary stuff for the proper operation of a church. We are aware of the fact that you pray for us, that is why God supports and strengthens us through your own wishes and prayers. This way, the Holy |20

Mission in Malawi is advancing, even at a slow pace. We are praying to the Most Merciful God to send a warmhearted donor so that we will be able to build in the city of Blandyre the Holy Church of the Nativity, whose foundation stone was laid by our Patriarch last year. We are happy to announce to you that quite recently our Mission obtained four building plots at focal points of the region of Lilongwe. It would be a real blessing if we could find donors to pay for the drilling of wells in these plots. The cost for every well comes to 3,500 â‚Ź, and it will serve 5 to 7 villages of every region.

Here, as you know, poverty has no end, there is hopeless destitution, and generally, the people are still suffering in all areas. In this extremely difficult condition, Orthodoxy manages to survive and gives a living confession where and when needed.

theologically educated, will be able to come to Malawi and offer their services here. The theological training of the priests-to-be is one of our major priorities so that the future priests will be able to teach properly the Orthodox faith to the other people of their region as well.

This October has brought a lot of presents to our Mission, since along with the blessed visit of our Bishop, came other blessings too, which boosted it one step forward.

The second miraculous event is the two ordinations of the deacons Antonios and Ezekiel in presbyters. For the past five years Deacon Antonios has shown fervent zeal, set up a wonderful parish at the Church of the Archangels in Palombe, and recently attended to the establishment of the local school.

The first miraculous event is that with Almighty God’s help, we managed to send to the Theological School of Kenya three seminarists. Gregory, Simon and Constantine will be studying there for three consecutive years and then, being

Deacon Ezekiel studied at the Patriarchal School. When he

came back fully qualified, he was ordained, and now he serves as both a priest and a translator who translates the orthodox papers from English into the local language Chichewa. As for the third miraculous event, it truly strengthened us spiritually since we still become aware of God’s presence and providence despite our sinfulness. We know very well that the Μost Merciful God reveals his miraculous signs in order to strengthen the neophytes of His church, who are badly in need of it. So, two years ago at our church of Saint Anastasia the Farmakolytria, the catechist and

|22

the parish people woke up in the middle of the night after the first holy service that had taken place, and heard angels’ voices sing without being able to see anyone. These days, at the church of Saints Cyril and Athanasios which is under construction at the city of Zomba, appeared a “fool”, stood in the middle of the yard and addressed to the builders and our catechists who were present. This “fool” is known in the area. He is homeless and wanders from village to village in shabby clothes. Everybody laughs at him. Young and old disdain him and when they talk to him, they do it in order to make fun of him, or to throw him something to eat.

We, ourselves, have not had the chance to meet him before. The catechists present were about to turn him away from the churchyard but he stood up among them and spoke in a loud voice. “Don’t turn me away!” he said.“ I came here to talk to you about Orthodoxy. At this very church you are building, lies true faith! Here is salvation! Now your Bishop has come to Malawi”!!! These are only a few of the things this“ fool” said before leaving in order to continue wandering. How was it possible for such a person to whom we had never talked before and who led such a strange life, to stand up and talk so outspokenly about Orthodoxy, which leads to salvation? Of course, the Holy Spirit “blows where It wants” and enlightens whoever It wants, so that the awesome, wonderful and miraculous works of God will come to light. On the one hand, we may be sinking in sins, but on the other, the Most Merciful God and affectionate Father is holding our hand, guides us and strengthens us in faith and salvation. CAMEROON

Spiritual refuge for the young people of Yaounde. Dear brothers, Rejoice in the Lord always! I have mentioned in the past the importance of the presence of the Holy Churches of Saint Demetrios and the Holy Trinity at the capital of Cameroon, Yaounde, which were built thanks to the kind donation of the Fraternity. These two churches have been operating regularly since October 2011 following a specific schedule of services and Divine Liturgies four times a week and with a relevant schedule of sermons and speeches by all the priests. Our Church has already made its presence known in the city center, and we thank God for such a blessing. Always thinking of promoting our humble missionary efforts, we are in search of more means |26

to support the evangelical work. We have always considered the possibility of creating a center which could arouse the interest of the young people so that they would approach the Orthodox Church, this coming from the proximity of the Holy Church of Saint Demetrios to two big Universities. Hundreds of students roam within the vicinity waiting for their classes to start, and due to the fact that the number of the University classrooms is not enough for all students, half of them have to wait for the first group to finish so that they can continue themselves in the same classroom. We conceived the idea of creating an open Library-Reading Room with personal computers

and connections through the internet with e-libraries from all over the world. This library would be open to students. We believe such a plan could work positively for our missionary efforts, and in the long run we could have a lot of positive results, because through the offer of a spiritual refuge for the young people, at the same time the Orthodox Church becomes known, since the church will be situated within the same place. Since the surrounding space of the Church is too small for something like that, the idea was put on standby. However,

lately we were approached by a neighbor who suggested selling us the adjoining plot of 365 square meters for 23,000₏. We believe this is a unique bargain. We are aware of the fact that the times are hard and that there is financial depression everywhere; however, we hope that God never gives up on the Missionary work, which, after all, is the core of the mystery of His incarnation and humbly a matter of our unimportant existence, too. With the Lord’s love and wishes to all the Fraternity members. Gregory of Cameroon

KENYA

30 years of missionary ministry My dear brothers, Rejoice in the Lord! I am particularly happy and moved to be in touch with you from the missionary Diocese of Kenya, which is located in the eastern part of the African Continent. With God’s help, I have completed 30 years in Africa, 20 of which as a humble worker of the mysteries of God’s Grace, although I first set my foot on the African land in 1977. Milestones which have marked the biggest part of my earthly life. Spiritual and Social Education

Last week, with God’s help we had the great blessing to declare the beginning of the new academic year at the Orthodox Patriarchal School “Archbishop Makarios the 3rd”,which has been operating since1982.Thirty years of continuous offer and strong presence of the Lord among us.

School sang melodiously in Greek, English, Swahili, and in other local dialects. This year the School has 50 seminarists coming from Kenya and other African countries: Madagascar, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe.

The Kenyan seminarists belong to the following tribes: During the Divine liturgy Kikuyu, Nandi, Luo,Luyia, the choir of the Patriarchal Masaii, Turkana, Kamba. |28

Among the various activities of the School there is one of utmost importance, the translation project of the liturgical books, services, and mysteries into the local dialects, not only of Kenya, but also of the other African countries, too. So far over 250 different books have been released in more than thirty dialects. In the same place which hosts the Patriarchal school, there are also the Technical School with 700 students (male and female), the Orthodox College of Africa with 400 students (male and female), the

Schools of Sewing, Computer Science, Social Studies, the Kindergarten and the Primary school of Saint Clement, with 450 poor children who are offered free of charge studies and on a daily basis breakfast and lunch, stationery, uniform and medical treatment. Our Primary School was characterized the best and most perfect among thirty other primary schools of the district. All the teachers there are graduates of our local Orthodox Pedagogical School. The six best students who graduated last year are now

Αναμένοντας την ελπίδα Father Stephen Lunagula is a graduate of the Orthodox Patriarchal Ecclesiastical School “Makarios, Archbishop of Cyprus” at Nairobi in Kenya, and also holds a degree of Pastoral and Social Theology. He was ordained priest in 1975 by the late Bishop of Uganda Theodore Nankyama. He serves as a Prelatic Commissioner in the Eastern region of Uganda (Busoga). He is the father of ten children. Dear brothers, Rejoice in the Lord! It is a great blessing and opportunity for me from Uganda to be in contact with your Fraternity, which was founded in 1963 by the name “Friends of Uganda”. I feel the spiritual joy and honor to thank our Bishop Jonah Lwanga, who blessed and entrusted me with the position of the Prelatic Commissioner of the Orthodox

Church for the eastern part of Uganda at the region of Busoga. I am deeply touched to be writing to you humbly asking for spiritual guidance and financial support. The exact base where I serve is the Holy Church of Saint James Adelphotheos ( Jacob, the brother of the Lord) in Nawango, where there are 919 Orthodox Christians. We have a permanent primary school with 415 children, of which 139 are orphans, or come from very 33|

poor families. I try to support them in many different ways to the extent this is possible. We teach them reading and writing, we offer them common meals, we supply them with school uniforms, blankets, notebooks‌ Apart from Saint James’ community, we have created other communities as well, like that of the Annunciation of Theotokos in Nakyaka with a primary school, where most children sit under the trees, while some of them learn reading and writing at the temporary buildings. Here we have 365 children, 22 of which are orphans. We also have a permanent Junior High School, which started operating in 2012.

|34

I always try to help them as long as I can afford it, but many times it is technically impossible for me to accept any other children who are srarving, due to lack of financial support. The number of children mentioned is small, but there is a larger number of orphans or children coming from very poor families who need our love and support, and who are waiting to be included in the new aid program. We also have new communities in the regions of Kananage, with 64 Orthodox Christians, Bugondha, with 49 Orthodox Christians, and Kiyunga, with 14 Orthodox Christians. I would also like to offer the children the following:

Makeshift school in Nakyaka

1) Spiritual guidance, a common meal at school as well as the absolutely essential, especially to the orphans and those coming from very poor families. 2) An orphanage, which I hope we will be able to build at the region of Nakyaka, for a more convenient spiritual supervision, medical treatment and concentration of the orphans. 3) The construction of a permanent primary school in the same region, which will help us bring the children closer to Orthodoxy. 4) In conclusion, with possible future assistance on your part, I would like to do as many things as possible in other parishes of my region too, so that Orthodoxy can expand and flourish, and increase the number of the orthodox Christians in the Church of Uganda. Dear Brothers in Christ, I humbly ask for your spiritual guidance as well as your financial support so that we will be able to realize our wishes, dreams and hopes through the love of our Lord and Savior. Amen! Fr. Stephen Lunagula Prelatic Commissioner

Awaiting your assistance Dear brothers in Christ, Rejoice in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! I am happy to announce to you that we have received the amount of the 3,000â‚Ź which you sent us for the common meals of little children (the poor ones and the orphans). We would like to thank from the bottom of our heart the Fraternity and our friends in Thessaloniki and all over Greece for supporting the works of our Lord here in the eastern district of Uganda.

make it on our own without your help. I would also like to inform you that on the 23rd of October, name day of Saint James the brother of the Lord, we were visited by His Grace Bishop Jonah, who celebrated the Divine Liturgy with five presbyters and three deacons. We dedicated that day to the little children, many of whom gathered from the surrounding communities to feel what Orthodoxy means. May God always bless you, your partners and their families.

You are always in our daily prayers. Amen. We have orphans as well as poor children who want to go to Fr. Stephen Lunagula school and ask for it but we put Prelatic Commissioner them on standby since we cannot

"The works of Thine hands" massive and taking inter-social dimensions, here, on the other corner of the earth, our pain and anxiety is put into trial too. This is also the pain and anxiety of our fellow citizens, fathers, brothers and friends from Greece. Our pain and your pain, since the Greeks always “build” everything collectively in this “blessed refuge” called “Yours from yours” Greece, as the memorable Fotis stands for all our acts and Kontoglou would say. opportunities which are Despite the numerous offered by God daily, because difficulties, the absolutely nothing belongs to financial construction of the orphanage us. is still in process, which is Likewise in this period initially supported by the that my country is on a trial generous donation of 50,000€ and the personal pain of each coming from a compatriot person has started becoming from Thessaloniki through It is well known that every effort and every good work is first tried by temptations and grief. This is one of the laws of our Faith. As if each one of our acts, offered to us by God, clean and intact, should be tried from the “sieve” of God’s will before it returns to Him from whom it sprang and originated.

the Orthodox Missionary Fraternity. In the building installations there will also be included an internal Holy Church for the inmates of the orphanage of our country, a dining room and plenty of rooms where will find board and lodging and a chance to survive those children who were not privileged enough to feel family cosiness or the warmth of a parental hug, which many of us were lucky enough to enjoy in our life by divine grace. Now that I am writing these lines, I can’t help thinking how important are some things in our life. How lavishly they |38

are given to us by God again and again and how ungrateful and thankless we seem to be towards “Divine Providence’. I am praying to God to put an end to this appalling fever of ingratitude. I myself wonder at this work, which of course is not mine; first it belongs to God and then to all the people who contribute to that, with the Bishop of our local Church ahead. And yet, I confess that I still hesitate and refuse to admit this miracle. Thoughts of disbelief succeed the blessed moments of Divine consolation, which, I think, we all experience in this full of hardships life.

However, the final result is what I see, live and experience. The church is being built by Divine Grace and “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”. I address these words to all of us as a last warm prayer and plea: “Confirm, o Lord, the Church, which you purchased with your precious blood”, whether that called Bishop, or volunteers or faithful and crew and Church and Arc of Salvation and in general, consolation to human pain. Confirm o Lord and forsake not "the works of Thine hands". Amen Hieromonk Polykarpos of Hagia Anna

BURUNDI & RWANDA

An offer of love Dear brothers in Christ!

I

start my letter grateful and deeply touched by your love. During the three years of existence of our Holy Diocese here in Burundi and Rwanda, you have never forgotten to stand by us. Through the constant support of the Orthodox Missionary Fraternity, we have achieved a lot of missionary works, which allow me to present with exceptional joy: Saint Demetrios, Kinama, BR From your Fraternity I received the amount of 70,000€. The Holy Church, which is 540 sq m in area, has cost 130,000€ and 90% of its construction has already been completed. What is left is the floor, the doors and the painting. The pace may be slow but the whole work will be completed soon. Holy Trinity, Kigali, RW The Fraternity has offered the amount of 55,000€ for the purchase of the plot and the construction of the Holy Church.

|40

According to the budget, this is expected to be completed with 90,000€. 60% of the project has been completed and what is left is the roof, the floor, the doors, plastering, painting etc. Water supplying With the amount of 31,500€ which you gave us, we went on not only with the drilling of new wells but also with the repair and reoperation of aqueducts and boreholes which were destroyed during the civil war. Polyclinic

Thanks to the offer of an anonymous lady donor-regular member of your Fraternity, this important work of care and health which upgrades the presence of the Orthodox Church in Burundi, has almost been completed. What is left, is the connection to power and water. We are ready to submit the documents required for its operation license. Christenings The Fraternity wholeheartedly covers the expenses of plenty of christenings, due to the fact that more and more native brothers come to the Church of Christ. Faldamean Technical School The School of Electronics has been equipped with Mrs Faldami’s money through your Fraternity and it is almost ready. We are expecting the operation license from the state so that we can start accepting students.

T

hrough your help the Orthodox Church has become one of the main powers which conduce to the development of the rural areas and the supply of aid and drinkable water. Dear brothers, as you all know from your experience with 41|

the Mission, there are always unexpected expenses above budget in all works; as a result, we fall a little behind with their completion. An immediate example of this is the lack of fuel and power that has been troubling the country for a month now, which is a major cause of work delay and a big financial burden. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your moral and material support to the Missionary work of our Diocese. We feel that you are very close to us; you are our own people, the supporters of our work. Thanks

|42

to your help, we have created two new Missionary Centers, are having two Churches under reconstruction, have completed one Clinic and one School, have drilled or repaired boreholes and have baptized about 3,000 Africans in only two and a half years. In total, the amount we have received from the Fraternity comes to 275,500â‚Ź, which was all used as requested out of respect for you who deprived yourselves of this money for the good of the Fraternity.

With love in Christ, ď‚…Savas of Burundi and Rwanda

The children of Tanzania hope and wait Tanzania is a country of Eastern Africa eight times larger than Greece. AIDS is one of the most serious problems for its poor people. The Holy Metropolis of Eirinoupolis through His Grace Demetrios and the Missionaries Archimandrite Fotios Chatziantoniou and Michael Danios, participates in the daily struggle for survival of our African brothers in Tanzania by providing pharmaceutical medication to hundreds of AIDS patients and other sick people. It has also created nine schools in various regions and cities. Primary schools, Junior and Senior High Schools, which, being constructed even in these days thanks to the support of sensitive donors, are handed over to the government for the

service of the students of the Maasai tribe. The Metropolis pays the tuition fees of many needy Orthodox students every school period. It also drills a lot of wells with potable water, since most houses have no taps. In addition, it offers daily a glass of milk and biscuits to two hundred and fifty starving children and every Sunday a meal to hundreds of young and old. Moreover, it helps the twenty orthodox African priests spiritually so that they can become good spiritual fathers and take over the Missionary work. This, however, requires a big spiritual struggle and time. In terms of material needs, it has built a lot of presbyteries for 43|

the priests and cares for their necessary daily food provisions. It is very moving to see the Africans sit in church quietly, receive the Holy Communion in perfect order and say all together the “Creed” (the Symbol of Faith) and the “Lord’s Prayer”, give out their hands when the priest says: “Let us love one another” and at the end of the Holy Liturgy sing so beautifully the hymn “O Virgin Pure”. By the Grace of God there are thirty holy churches which have been erected, and thousands of christenings that take place. However, there are still plenty of needs as well as temptations for the poor children who walk on the streets barefoot but always

|44

seem to be happy and smiling. It is truly remarkable the fact that only the Orthodox Mission managed to assist and stand by these children and those miserable people. By offering our slightest contribution to these happy little faces, we fill up with the joy of giving, which is one of the most wonderful moments for every Orthodox Christian. Let us all pray to God to give health to both our African brothers and the Greek missionaries, who, setting their life at risk, struggle in order to bear witness to Orthodoxy and Greece.
