Director’s Letter Dear industry members: The film and TV production industry in Oregon hit a milestone last year, with over $100 million dollars in production spending from out-of-state projects. One way to look at it is if we were to all pool our money like a giant TV production studio bank, it would take $100 million to recreate last year’s level of production -- all those episodes of Grimm, Leverage and Portlandia. But Oregon didn’t finance those projects, and while the money was spent here with appropriate cause for celebration, the profits from distributing and airing the projects lives elsewhere. This was the theme behind the NW Film Finance symposium in March, in which OMPA connected independent producers with the people and knowledge to take their projects to the national and international marketplace. Positive reviews keep coming in, and we believe we were very successful at:

• Educating producers and finance partners on the mechanics of projecting and realizing returns on investment,

• Stimulating new ideas about financing and distributing projects, and

• Forging relationships between creative producers, executive producers, finance partners, and the legal, marketing and distribution professionals in our community who can support this business.

SourceOregon 2012 is here! The long awaited 2012 version of the SourceOregon industry directory is here. And there are 1500 crew and professional services included, reflecting Oregon’s growing resources to serve the commercial, film, television and interactive media production industry. Equally exciting is our switch to a larger, magazine size format, with articles, photos and information about what makes Oregon a valuable place to shoot. We think you’ll like it! Copies are already in the OMPA office, and every OMPA member should come in and pick one up. Copies for non-members and general public are available for $12. (Additional free copies have been set aside for any production coming to town, and are distributed to producers, coordinators and department heads for all the projects that land here.) A comprehensive directory of all the professional services in Oregon is an extremely practical resource for shooting in the state. Keeping producers abreast of a current list of crew and resources available is a big part of OMPA’s role in fostering a functioning production industry in Oregon. And because contact information changes and new resources arrive throughout the year, the entire directory is live on

www.SourceOregon.com, where every lister can log in and add or change their own information. The directory is used to show what sets Oregon apart, and includes stories about our locations, ease of permitting, technological savvy, production and post production resources. In addition to distribution to the working crew, production companies and projects currently shooting in Oregon, the directory is distributed as a marketing piece to agencies and production companies throughout the U.S. In addition to being a resource for coordinating our local industry and marketing Oregon’s resources to the world, SourceOregon is also where we publish the industry’s Standards & Practices, which includes suggested terms and best practices for client billing, employing children, and working as an independent contractor. While the total dollars spent in Oregon’s industry is not yet known, we do know that the film and television component (ok, mostly television) is 177% greater than in 2010. That’s a lot of increase! Thank you for being a functioning community to accommodate that growth with professionalism and grace. And thanks for using SourceOregon to stay connected!

Statement to Portland Mayoral and City Commissioner candidates, prepared by OMPA Government Affairs:

What Our Industry Needs to Thrive March 2012 • Promote the media production industry as one that is: Local, environmentally friendly, a driver of family wage jobs, and a major sector of economic growth. Media production includes traditional products like commercials, films, and television shows, as well as mobile apps, video games, and web content. • Support in the State Capitol for our programs, especially the Oregon Media Production Fund (OPIF) and the Indigenous Oregon Media Production Fund (iOPIF). • Understand the difference between local, indigenous media productions and those that come here from out of state, including how they promote each other and are interdependent. • Understand the short time table that media productions work on, and craft city policy and culture to be capable of turning things around with little time. • Develop a permitting process that: o Is easy and fast to navigate through o Contains fees that are commensurate with the impact or size of the production. o Is not prohibitive to the recruitment of new work from out of state. • Be creative in finding new ways to promote the media production industry, as well as attract new work using city resources.

Events in Review: NW Film Financing Symposium 4 Thanks to Christopher Toyne and exceptional panel of filmmakers and business people, Tara Johnson-Medinger and the staff of the POWFest and the Hollywood Theatre, plus 100 or so independent filmmakers and prospective financiers, the two-day NW Film Finance Symposium was everything it had hoped to be. It educated on the mechanics of realizing returns, stimulated new ideas and forged valuable relationships. It wouldn’t have taken place without the efforts of volunteers Jena Bodell, Erica Risberg, Lindsae Klein, Armeen Monohan, Susan Owens-Duval, and Timothy Levine. Hats off to them! We are already planning the next events in the series and are eager to have your voice in the dialog about growing more profitable productions among Oregon’s indie filmmaker community.

Portland Teen Idol Registration Open Through April 15 It’s not just a singing contest anymore. Portland Teen Idol is growing in scope, benefit and talent pool for the sixth edition of the program. In addition to English Vocals; Spanish Vocals and Stand-up Comedy have been added to the competition, as well as two intern programs for teens interested in production and program management to increase the number of youth taking advantage of the program. By diversifying with the introduction of the Spanish contest and non-contest internships, Portland Teen Idol is opening doors and blazing a new trail. “In its sixth year, it’s growing the scope, benefit and talent pool by accepting registrations through April 15th in more than just singing,” says the program’s producer Dennis Gleason. Audition dates to be provided shortly at the PTi website. The winner in English Vocals garners a $500 first prize; new Spanish Vocals and Stand-up Comedy contest winners receive $250 each, and all finalists go on a summer tour. To participate in most of the teen programs, students must be in grades 7 through 12 (home schooled or early graduates must be under 18), live roughly within 25-30 miles of Portland/ Vancouver, and be at least 13 as of April 1, 2012. Gleason says that volunteers, judges, musicians and sponsors are also welcome to participate. With the first round of auditions occurring soon, this year is earmarked to be the best yet for the rebranded program. Gleason indicates that Portlanders should look for other surprise participants and says local favorites Michael Allen Harrison and Ian James will be returning again this year.

Also back again are 2008 Mrs. Oregon Int’l - Debra Gilmour, Celebrity Makeup Artist & Hair Stylist - M’chel Bauxal, vocalist Laura Cochran and many more.
