Dear

Director’s Letter

OMPA members, Following our snowy start to the new year I’m surprised that OMPA already has much to reflect upon and a full list of fruitful work ahead. Inside February’s CallSheet, we are sharing with you some reflections, celebrations, and a commitment for our future work. Foremost, our reflective moment. OMPAmember, Bruce Lawson shared with us some poignant photos of Grimm’s wrapping six years of outstanding television. The emptiness speaks volumes. Yet, Grimm leaves a gift that is certainly audible, laudable and applaudable; a legacy of excellence in television production, and a legacy of giving to Doernbecher Children's Hospital. This year the Grimm Gala raised over $800,000 and with that gift, a promise to continue to keep Grimmsters Giving. This year OMPA members also came out in droves to uplift the oppressed, created art to spark empathy and produced outstanding work in the face of adverse conditions. I’m so grateful to be a part of the OMPA community. Inside February's CallSheet you will find so much wonderful news to celebrate. One of my favorite pages in this ezine is our “Round of Applause.” From film festivals to awards, each nugget of good news becomes a story that I’m privileged to share with our legislators as to the vitality, growth and economic impact of the film, television and interactive media industry. We are also celebrating the OMPA’s Annual Award recipients for 2017. Remember to keep sharing your good news with me! Finally, as OMPA looks ahead to 2017 we are officially welcoming our new Board of Directors. Our Board will be meeting in February to outline our goals for the coming year with tangible action steps. Every year I choose a quote to hold dear and I am grateful for my personal quote of 2017 which reflects how I feel about OMPAmembers; “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions by its members,” Coretta Scott King. Thank you for being a part of our community.

Membership matters,

Janice

incendi0 Writer and Director Slater Dixon will be premiering his latest short film INCENDIO as part of the upcoming 40th Portland International Film Festival. “INCENDIO” is the hottest dating app on the market. But will the couple kill each other, or fall in love trying in this over the top take on the highs and lows of online dating?

"Anything can happen in the world of online dating, and everything does when a mismatched couple meets on an ill-fated blind date. Sparks fly and passion erupts; but will they kill each other, or fall in love trying?"

.

INCENDIO is marking it’s world premiere as a part of the Short Cuts, Made in Oregon short film showcase showing on FEB 18th at 2:30PM at the Whitsell Auditorium.

All Together Now – Workers Compensation Your cast, your crew, your industry.

Question: We know you’re the creative type, living on the edge, right? Yep, we thought so! But did you know, if you make the wrong choice when it comes to workers compensation, not only could you jeopardize your own livelihood and reputation, your actions could broadly impact others in your industry? Here are important trends you need to know: • Only a few select insurance companies will write workers compensation for film production. • Short-term policies are simply not available. • Underwriters may require producers to agree in writing to a full year policy. As more producers try to cancel early, Oregon risks losing the few remaining insurance companies willing to offer coverage on the voluntary market. • If you repeatedly cancel early, many insurance companies will automatically decline you in the future. Remember, they can track individual ownership information. • If a voluntary market declines you, your only remaining option may the Assigned Risk Pool, which can more than double rates and increase minimum premiums. • You will not be charged more than your fair share, whether you had 3 days on set, or 9 months for payroll. The year-end audit looks at your actual payroll, and adjusts premiums up or down, subject to a policy minimum premium. Let your creative genius help channel that inner business guru! Avoid costly mistakes, and stay in compliance with the law. If you have 1099 Contractors or SAG-AFTRA contracts, Cast and Crew coverage can help meet other contractual requirements. Before starting production on your next project, be sure to consult with a film production insurance specialist. They will have a full understanding of the specific types of coverage you need to protect your project. .

shut up anthony I'm finally able to share the one sheet I designed and illustrated for Kyle Eaton's upcoming feature "Shut Up Anthony" starring Robert D'Esposito, Jon Titterington and Katie Michels. Some of my favorite Portland people were involved in the making of this project and I was pleased to be able to contribute something. The film will have its official premiere at the 2017 Cinequest Film Festival! And then there will be a special Portland screening on March 16th at the Hollywood Theatre, so come out and support this Oregon-made feature (RSVP here). Good things! -Josh Lunden Filmmaker & OMPA Board member

On Inauguration Day 2017, Open Signal and Lower Boom partnered to launch the creative initiative “POST-TRUTH” at Post-Truth-World.com. Open Signal (formerly Portland Community Media) and Lower Boom will be awarding (5) $1000 stipends to 5 NW storytellers to help facilitate the creation of original work reflecting/commenting on the concept of Post-Truth.

WHAT IS POST-TRUTH?

Oxford Dictionaries selected “Post-Truth” as 2016’s international word of the year, after the contentious “Brexit” referendum and an equally divisive U.S. presidential election caused usage of the adjective to skyrocket, according to the Oxford University Press. The dictionary defines “post-truth” as “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.”
