Dear
Director’s Letter
OMPA members,
The promise of spring is on the horizon; everything is feeling fresh and bursting with newness. Festival Season has officially launched and we are pleased to see and celebrate the works of so many #OMPAmembers. Your excellence in the film, television and interactive media industry continues to shine an indistinguishable light on Oregon. This month OMPA’s community is invited to come together for a couple of wonderful events. Our SouceOregon2017 release party will take place on March 17th at Koerner Camera Systems during their launch of Koerner Canvas Space; showcasing Erica Montgomery. And on March 20th please join us for OMPA’s Annual Award Show with the Actor Awards presented by APP-NW at the Gerding Theatre at 7:00pm. Throughout the history of OMPA, recognizing members of our community has taken many forms; from the Cascade Awards to the Superfine Actor Awards and the Oregon Actor Awards. It seems that while these awards have morphed to respond to the needs of our community, the intention to celebrate excellence has not diminished. This year OMPA’s Annual Award Show is building upon the legacy of all of the award shows in previous years and emerging with an identity that will continue to grow. We will be celebrating Representative Vic Gilliam for his tireless championing of the film industry and Travis Knight for his innovative, groundbreaking work at LAIKA Studios and recent BAFTA award for Kubo and the Two Strings. Also, OMPA will be resending a statewide survey in early April conducted by University of Oregon. We will be gathering longitudinal data that will help us to shape and strengthen our programs based upon the cumulative results. And finally OMPAmembers, I will continue to update you, in our Members Only communications, on the progress of HB2244 as we journey through the Senate this month. We look forward to seeing you at our SourceOregon 2017 release party and at OMPA’s Annual Award Show.
Membership matters,
Janice

Over-serving isn’t serving your Oregon company. Many of our clients are planning now for yearly fundraisers, auctions, company picnics, employee retreats and other parties. During this planning stage, it’s important that you make sure your company is protected for possible claims, including property damage, theft, and, most notably, your Liquor liability. Many people don’t understand that any company who hosts the party can be held liable, and preparing ahead of time can save your company from a significant financial setback. This is especially important in Oregon as the state has some of the strongest dram shop laws in the nation. “Dram shop” is an old legal term that refers to establishments like restaurants or bars that sell alcohol. And, in Oregon, the strict dram shop laws don’t just apply to taverns anymore. What that means to you is that liability for damage or injury arising from the consumption of alcohol can be assigned to the host of any place where alcohol was available, regardless of who was serving, or whether there was a specific charge for the drink, or drinks included with the entrance fee for the event. Here are some tips to plan a safe event, and keep the liquor (liability) in the bag!
Continued...
.
Hire A Caterer
Many organizations will have their volunteers serve at fundraising events. These volunteers may inadvertently over-serve liquor to attendees due to inexperience or because they are anxious to get people loose with their wallet, effecting donor enthusiasm to gift more funds and bid high on auction items. Unfortunately, these volunteers are often not trained or motivated to pay attention to whether your guests have had one too many. We strongly encourage hiring a caterer or other professional do the serving for your event so you minimize your liability and the chance that your guests will cause a problem or accident on the way home.
Don’t Wait
Anytime there’s more than 250 people in attendance at your event, the OLCC requires a full liquor liability policy for a permit. This can take some time for your insurance agent to acquire for you, so it’s best not to wait until a few days before event! If possible, call your insurance company a couple of weeks, minimum, before your event to make the proper arrangements.
Use Drink Tickets
If you’re hosting the beverages, we recommend that you limit the number of drinks per guest to 1-2 drink tickets. This automatically limits consumption, as your guests will pace accordingly.
Switch It Up
Consider switching from serving alcoholic beverages, to serving coffee and sparkling soda waters towards the last hour of the event. This allows the event to start winding down and minimizes the likelihood of overindulgence. Plus it gives your guests a chance to clear their head and make a wiser choice about their transportation home.
Enforce Safe Rides
Many of our clients enforce a Safe Ride Home Policy. Communicate with them that you expect them to assign a designated sober driver, or to get a taxi, Uber, or Lyft ride home. Tell them in advance at your office meetings, emails, and even on the invitation. Make it abundantly clear they should find safe rides home. If you have any questions about your next event, just give ABI Insurance a call! Your current coverage may have limitations and exclusions, so we can advise you on any additional policies you may need. We can help you navigate all the possible risks and walk you through all the precautions to take for a fun and safe event.

burlesque heart of the glitter tribe
Burlesque Heart of the Glitter Tribe feature documentary has been picked-up for worldwide distribution by XLrator Media, Los Angeles. Through their partnership with the New York Film Critics Series the feature will screen in 50+ theaters nationwide next month! Glitter Tribe is a documentary feature about the passion and personalities at the heart of today’s new wave of burlesque. On stage and in candid conversation, twelve of today’s hottest performers reveal the naked truth about an exotic world where artifice is a route to authenticity and pretending to be someone else is the ultimate journey to become yourself.
.
These burlesquers put it all on the line in performances that are sexy, funny, elegant and outrageous and they bare more than their bodies as they discuss their artistic vision, their financial struggles, the misconceptions that infuriate them and the community that sustains them. In production in Oregon for over 7 years and working with over 240 of Oregon’s best technicians and media artists to create a film story that people are really responding to. We think this is a great home-grown, DIY feature film that has it’s roots and success firmly planted in the people and places unique to Oregon. Portland, OR - Friday, March 3rd - March 9th Living Room Theaters Check out the film’s Facebook page for nationwide screenings.

Red Door has some icy fun.
Red Door has some icy fun.
Red Door Films jumped into 2017 with two back-to back productions: a spot promoting Spirit Mountain’s newly remodeled casino and a web video for Life Flight Network. The Spirit Mountain production launched during Portland’s ice storms, which made for some freakish travel to Grande Ronde, Oregon. Then it was off to Montana for the Life Flight shoot, in ten degree weather near ice-and-snow-covered Seeley Lake, 70 miles outside of Missoula. From one icy world to another… Both projects were written, directed and edited by Red Door’s David Poulshock. “Man, I thought Grand Ronde and Portland were getting a little too frigid this winter, but Montana was cold,” said Poulshock. “Still, it was a true pleasure working with the Life Flight people and the Seeley Lake Volunteer Fire Department — all dedicated professionals who truly care about the people they serve.” In Montana, Poulshock worked with an excellent Missoula crew and former Portlander Mark Petersen as DP. Poulshock and Petersen had collaborated previously on several Goodwill projects. Also on the shoot: Robb Walther of Run Spot Run as PA and Still Photographer. See the finished short.
Continued... 16
According to Poulshock, Spirit Mountain had just completed a major remodel of the casino, replete with fantastical lighting treatments that cycle through a variety of colors and moods — even Green/Yellow and Orange/ Black to celebrate OSU/UO Civil War weekends. “The casino’s new lighting scheme was a challenge, but Sarge, Coach and Russ were up to the task as always,” Said Poulshock. “And Russ put together some cool technology for capturing the time-lapse we needed.” For Spirit Mountain, Red Door’s stellar crew included: Russ Eaton, DP; Kathy Krause, 1st AD; Sarge Fleskes, Gaffer; Coach Fleskes, Key Grip; Cory Sorensen, 1st AD; Mikel Cook, DIT; Edward Gouttierre, Production Coordinator; Keaton Suskie, PA. Cameras provided by Koerner Camera Systems. Grip/Electric, Coach Sarge Cine. Color correction by Bingo Lewis’ Rob Anderson. Sound design and sweetening by Richard Moore and Randy Johnson of Tag Team Audio. VO, October Moore. For more information on Red Door Films please visit www.reddoorfilms.com. HouseSpecial’s Lamentation
Screening at PDX’s New Hollywood Theatre A visually arresting journey into the devastatingly haunting vortex of a lover’s lament. Inspired by Pink Martini’s performance of the Romanian ballad, Până când nu te iubeam (Before I Fell in Love with You). From Director Kirk Kelley, Founding Partner/Creative Director of HouseSpecial. Portland animation studio HouseSpecial announces the opening screening of their latest short film Lamentation at The Hollywood Theatre @PDX, the new movie theatre in Portland’s airport (C Concourse), beginning on February 23, 2017 and running regularly through the Spring.
Continued...
.
The short film is inspired by Portland’s own world-renowned Pink Martini’s rendition of the sorrowful Romanian ballad Până când nu te iubeam (Before I Fell in Love with You), with vocals by Storm Large. Director Kirk Kelley, Founding Partner/Creative Director of HouseSpecial, employed traditional stop-‐motion animation, in-camera VFX and CG elements combined with high-‐speed footage captured in practical environments. As the film unfolds, Kelley takes the musical instruments needed to perform the arrangement and drowns them in sensuality, longing and sadness, creating a story that is as mesmerizing, cyclic and hauntingly obtuse as the ballad. Mr. Kelley: “Pink Martini’s influence sweeps the globe—and they have touched me, as I’m continually inspired by their music that crosses every border and genre. At the heart of Până când nu te iubeam is a Romanian love ballad of devastating beauty and ethereal loneliness. It is both apocalyptic and cyclical. We can never grab hold and follow a narrative per se, but instead are drawn deeper into the vortex of the lament.” The production was produced with support from The Oregon Film Board’s Indigenous Oregon Production Investment Fund (iOPIF). The short film has screened at numerous festivals around the world including Amsterdam Film Festival (Winner – Best Music Video), Berlin Short Film Festival (Winner – Best Music Video), Best Short Fest – Ontario (Winner – Best Short Film), Silveron International Film Festival (Winner – Best Music Video), Austin Short Film Fest, Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival, London International Short Film Festival and the prestigious Mill Valley Film Festival. About Pink Martini: Featuring a dozen musicians, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Australia, New Zealand, South America and North America. Director Bio: Kirk Kelley Kirk’s a big-gun Director, and not just because he’s a Texan. A multi-‐talented creative leader and storyteller, Kirk has directed and supervised many premier ad campaigns over the last two decades. As creative steward of HouseSpecial’s diverse repertoire of M&M’S content, Kirk has garnered industry awards and accolades including multiple “Super BowlTM Top Ten Spots.”

NW DOCUMENTARY
KOERNER cANVAS Space
Koerner Canvas Space is a rotating art show where local artists are invited to showcase their original artwork and hold opening receptions throughout the year. Each show is scheduled to run for three months at a time and is free and open to the public. Located in the lobby of Koerner Camera Systems. About the artist: The first artist showcased in Koerner’s Canvas Space is Erica Montgomery. Erica Montgomery is a freelance photographer based in Tucson. “Over the last 5 years I have had a new food awakening. I began to see how we were all in this together. This planet is our home. We need to treat it the same way we treat our home. We need to treat everyone around us like honored guests. Now more than ever. So I reject single use plactic, carry re-useable bags and cups. Small things any of us can do. And I started shopping at the Farmers Markets around me, buying anything and everything I didn’t recognize or know what to do with... This has led to a complete lifestyle change and awareness of who grew my food, where it was picked, and how far it traveled to get to me. It is important to me to know where my food comes from. This body of work is a celebration of my awakening.” -Erica Montgomery
