Standards OMPA assumes our members will uphold professional standards, and we ask the same of the agencies, producers and clients who employ us. One definition of “professional” is ‘someone who gets the job done’ -- as was ordered or contracted by the client. We all know what “getting the job done” means in our own professions. Standards apply as well to the hiring authority – and “getting the job done” for them means getting their labor or contractor paid according to the contract, and in abidance with state and federal law. This is why OMPA publishes two documents, which we distribute each year to all OMPA members in the annual directory: the Children’s Employment Guidelines and the Industry Standards & Practices. Those will soon be joined by a document of Agency Standards & Practices, to address the expectations of hiring a professional actor in Oregon. This effort is thanks to the hard work of the OMPA Talent Committee and OMPA’s Board of Directors. (The current published standards can be found on pages 144 and 145 of the SourceOregon directory.)

List in the Directory To the people you do not already know, if you are not in the SourceOregon directory, you simply don’t exist. That’s why all OMPA members get a directory listing with their membership. It is that simple. And for the remainder of the year, members of MOPAN (local to Eugene area) and SOFaT (Southern Oregon & Medford/Ashland) do as well. A comprehensive list of production personnel that is vetted for professionalism is key to marketing Oregon as a production locale and to keeping our crews and producers connected. So help make sure our industry members know: the directory keeps us connected. They may already have a large Rolodex of clients, or a great list of crew to draw on. However we hear time and again that once people start to explore Oregon’s production industry, they find that Oregon’s resources are far larger and far deeper than they had ever imagined.

OMPA Golf Classic discount SOFaT and MOPAN members are invited to take the OMPA member discount for the OMPA Golf Classic, on Friday July 20 at Indian Creek Golf Course in Hood River. The discount for golf is $150 each player rather than the regular $175. Golf, wine tour and bike challenge all include a banquet lunch and awards party. OMPA Golf Classic is Friday July 20 at Indian Creek Golf Course in Hood River. All the details about golf, wine tour and the new bike challenge are on the OMPA website.
The OMPA Golf Classic raises funds for OMPA and OMPA’s Media Arts Education Scholarship fund. Together, the Golf Classic and the MAE scholarships further the cause of creating community and encouraging excellence in Oregon’s media production industry. Two students from Southern Oregon University and faculty Howard Schreiber were winners of OMPA scholarships last year, and the Youth Visions Teen Video Challenge at the DIVA Center in Eugene has also been a past scholarship winner.
SOFaT and MOPAN discount for listing in Oregon’s industry directory, SourceOregon As was announced at the SOFaT and MOPAN meeting that OMPA President Michael Bard and Executive Director Tom McFadden attended in May, OMPA wants to give all SOFaT members who aren’t already in the SourceOregon directory a free Basic Listing through the end of the year (the same discount OMPA members enjoy). All they need to do is follow the “Get Listed” link at www.SourceOregon.com and use the $35 discount code SOFaT35 or MOPAN35.
This is in the interest of making SourceOregon the most comprehensive directory of Oregon crew and resources it can possibly be. The directory is currently searchable by membership, whether you are an OMPA member or a SOFaT member. We are constantly working to improve the site, so if you do have suggestions, email them to info@sourceoregon.com and we will log them.

The Great Northwest Film Tour/Adventures in All photos by Melody Saunders Plymptoons Wrap-up Thank you for your support of the Oregon tour of “Adventures in Plymptoons!” through the McMenamins theaters last month. The program was fantastic and was well received by the industry and community members who joined us at the opening event and throughout the tour. Press on the movie and the tour was extraordinary, and included interviews and stories in daily and weekly print journals, radio stations and news outlets, social media, and a host of websites and blogs. A web search on the topic proves amazing results. Oregon’s fantastic press and civic reception for the contribute to their success as the project moves along its journey, and for that we
screened at the MOMA in New York. Thank you very much for your contribution to this effort. and other storytelling activities require perseverance and many partnerships. We celebrate the entrepreneurs and creatives that persist through the challenges of these endeavors, just as we celebrate your ongoing support to encourage and grow Oregon’s creative industries through projects large and small. Indie Filmmaker James Westby Joins Mmmmm Society Northwest creative production company Mmmmm Society adds director James Westby to its collective of directors, animators, photographers and writers. Westby is an award-winning filmmaker who has established himself as a smart and original storyteller with a twisted sense of humor. Westby’s 2006 feature “Film Geek,” about an obsessively passionate video store clerk, was distributed by First Run Features and called “perceptively hilarious” by Entertainment Weekly. His next feature film, “The Auteur” premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival and has gained a worldwide cult following. In 2011, Westby directed, edited and wrote “Rid of Me” which also premiered at Tribeca, with the New York Times calling it “an ingenious black comedy.” The film won Best Narrative Feature at Michael Moore’s Traverse City Film Festival and was acquired by Phase 4 Films; it will premiere on Showtime in July 2012. “James has a unique and comedic vision and his stories always surprise you. He is a master of the quirky performance fused with wry wit and he has the ability to take outrageous material and humanize it,” says
Mmmmm Society Founder/EP Michele Carnes Ellis. “James is the perfect compliment to our roster which brings a diverse selection of top Northwest talents to the market,” she adds. “Mmmmm Society is gearing up to be a major production outfit,” says Westby, “and I am thrilled to be a part of it and to work with Michele. Also, the name is really fun to say. Mmmmm….” James Westby’s commercial work includes spots for Adidas and the University of Oregon, along with music videos for Storm Large (“8 Miles Wide”) and Oracle (“Wake”), among others.

Portland Filmmaker Accepted to Prestigious AFI Directing Workshop Surpasses Kickstarter fundraising goal in one day Portland filmmaker Sarah Gertrude Shapiro has been accepted into the 2012 American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women. This intensive program accepts just eight participants each year. Past AFI alumni include: Maya Angelou, Amy Heckerling and Andrea Arnold. Shapiro was accepted with her latest project Sequin Raze, a dark comedy short about the behind the scenes antics of a fictional romantic reality TV series. “This is a story I’ve been wanting to tell for many years. Most people know reality TV shows are staged to some degree,” Shapiro said, “but the extent that this new production model exploits people, particularly women, is a subject that needs to be talked about. Exploring this in the context of FICTION gives me license to dive in on this subject.” And the internet agreed. While AFI’s invitation comes with invaluable mentorships and several thousands of dollars of in-
kind support, Sequin Raze still needed to raise $5,000 towards its $30,000 budget before Shapiro could enter the workshops. Turning to the crowdsource fundraising tool, Kickstarter, the team raised more than $12,000 in just one day. They have now reoriented their goal to try to raise the film’s entire budget in just under three weeks. David Cress (Portlandia, Paranoid Park, Restless) and Erin Donovan (Field Recordings in-house producer) have signed on to produce the film. “I’ve been a fan of Sarah’s for a long time now, when I read this script I couldn’t put it down. It’s hilarious and scathing,” Cress enthused. “She’s like Lena Dunham crossed with Aaron Sorkin.” Shapiro’s previous short film 2nd Best about a couple who come home from a stressful trip to IKEA and decide to start processing their relationship, was shot over one weekend with non-professional actors. 2nd Best will debut at a prestigious GLBTQ Film Festival in 2012.

Northwest Film Center Wins Coveted Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation Earns National Recognition from Leading Public Relations Professional Organization The Northwest Film Center has won the prestigious Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) for superior performance in the design and execution of an individual public relations tactic for their 2011 film festival campaign, “A Slice of Cinema.” The PRSA recognizes and honors the best public relations tactics executed nationally each year. This year’s competition drew a total of 784 entries, of which only 83 organizations were selected by the judges as Bronze Anvil Award winners. To see the full list of winners, click here. The Film Center’s Bronze Anvil-winning “Slice of Cinema” campaign was conducted in October 2011 to promote its 38th Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival and combined two of Portland’s key ingredients: food and film. The Film Center partnered up with Portland pizza company Lonesome Pizza to deliver local and regional cinema into homes via pizza delivery. Each pizza box delivered in the Portland metro area contained a DVD compilation of the best short movies from
the 2010 Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival and promotion for the upcoming 2011 Festival, including a Festival postcard, film stills, Film Center brand messaging, and website URL. As Jessica Lyness, the Film Center’s Public Relations and Marketing Manager stated: “This was a fun and cool way to get this work from regional filmmakers in front of a broader audience.” The campaign connected with nearly one thousand residences in the Portland metro area, prompting customers to contact Lonesome Pizza for customized Northwest Film Center pie boxes and to seek more information about the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival. The campaign contributed to a 25% increase in attendance to the 2011 Festival. The 2012 Festival, November 9-17, is now accepting submissions. For more information click here.

Portland-Based Filmmakers Announce “We Grew Wings” Debut Women’s track and field documentary to screen in Portland 3x in July After premiering in Eugene, OR on June 30, “We Grew Wings,” a documentary film chronicling the untold story of the championship-level University of Oregon women’s track and field teams, will screen on July 15, 22 and 29 at the Hollywood Theater in Portland. The movie encompasses personal interviews, never-before seen event footage and a historical view of the Women of Oregon. “We Grew Wings” is a story of camaraderie, teamwork, personal struggles and personal triumphs. The film showcases the differences and similarities between two generations of athletes. These women faced it all to be champions—often in the shadows of the men’s programs. While the well-known University of Oregon men’s track and field dominated the spotlight, the early women’s track program strove to break new ground just as Title IX was presenting challenges and opportunities for universities across the country. 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of Title IX and “We Grew Wings” provides a unique look at the inside of women’s sports during those changes. This is the first time that many of these stories have been told. “I saw this project as an amazing opportunity for the past and present female athletes and their coaches
to get the recognition and respect they deserve … While today’s athletes knew the stories about the Men of Oregon, few of them knew about the legacy of the women’s program,” said Executive Producer/Producer Ellen Schmidt-Devlin, who is a former runner with the University of Oregon (1976-79). In 2010, Schmidt-Devlin turned her energy and resources to the creation of “We Grew Wings” after seeing the men’s programs featured in numerous movies and books. She sought out Portland filmmakers Erich Lyttle and Sarah Henderson, who had just wrapped up “There is No Finish Line,” a documentary about running legend Joan Benoit Samuelson. “The grace and grit demonstrated by these inspirational women gave us the opportunity to create an entertaining film that all generations can share,” said codirector Sarah Henderson. Lyttle adds: “We’re telling an untold sports story. It’s not just for track and field enthusiasts – this film can inspire anyone with a passion for sports.”

Opera Theater Oregon’s Season Closer Brings a Summertime Feast for the Senses “Sell your farm...come with me to the city.” “And my wife?” “Couldn’t she get drowned?” This is the premise of the 1927 silent film “Sunrise,” a timeless fable of jealousy, betrayal, forgiveness and renewed love; and one of the crowning achievements of the silent film era. Directed by F. W. Murnau (‘Nosferatu’), the film garnered awards for Best Actress (Janet Gaynor), Best Cinematography and “Best Picture, Unique and Artistic Production” at the firstever Academy Awards in 1929. Roger Ebert praised the film for camera work “that was apparently weightless, that could fly, that could move through physical barriers.” Opera Theater Oregon (OTO) brings Murnau’s masterpiece, considered by many to be the greatest silent film of all time, to the big screen on July 13th with “La Bohème vs. Sunrise,” their season closer and the final installment of their “Opera vs. Cinema” series. The popular series pairs classic silent
films with improvised accompaniment based on themes from favorite operas. For this one-night-only the show at the Mission Theater, the opera of choice is Giacomo Puccini’s beloved tale of young love, friendship and tragedy, “La Bohème.” In addition to containing thematic and plot similarities, “both works emerged during the close of a glorious era,” says OTO artistic director Erica Melton. “In the film’s case, we are looking at the very end of the silent age, just before silents gave way to talkies--days before the release of ‘The Jazz Singer.’ In the case of the opera, Puccini’s output represented the zenith of Italian opera, before German opera rose in prevalence.” Pianist Douglas Schneider, saxophonist Kim Reece and soprano Helen Funston will concoct a live fantasia of themes from “La Bohème” to accompany Murnau’s film in real time, reveling in Puccini’s sumptuous and romantic musical style and weaving in tunes from favorite arias like “Mi chiamano Mimì,” “Che gelida manina,” and “Quando m’en vo’.” Audience members can indulge their senses with operatic drink specials such as the “Puccini Sunrise,” “Musetta’s Schmaltz” and the “Mimì Martini.” This performance shows for one night only. All ages welcome. WHAT: Opera vs. Cinema: La Bohème vs. Sunrise WHEN: July 13th, 7:00pm (doors 6pm) WHERE: The Mission Theater, 1624 NW Glisan St., Portland, OR 97209 TICKETS: $12.00 (at the door) $9.00 (advance sales).
