Gabby’s Wish World Premier: March 8th at Hollywood Theater Pre-screening reception at Velo Cult (1969 NE 42nd Ave, Portland), 7:00 - 8:30pm, RSVP at www.ompa.org/events OMPA members Hollie Olson (writer/ director) and Tim Wyndham (producer) are premiering Gabby’s Wish during the Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival (POWfest) on March 8th at the Hollywood Theater (4122 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland) at 9:00pm. Admission is free for POWFest pass holders and $7 for others. Individual tickets can be purchased here. Olson says about her first feature: “I feel honored to have our local premiere be in a setting that is promoting women in film. The story I wrote came from a personal place so I’m nervous and thrilled to be showing it to a live audience.” In the film, Gabby, a dying widow with no children, invites her estranged family to her home for a long weekend
to reacquaint and find an heir. Gabby’s Wish is a character-driven story with a true life sense of humor that is both funny and touching. As the people they are today unfold before her, who will she choose? The film utilized the talents of other OMPA members and supporters including actress Marcella Laasch and assistant director Susan Funk. While seeking distribution for Gabby’s Wish, Wyndham’s Cineduction LLC has also partnered with Olson as a co-producer on Chris Wilson’s feature, Bad Signs, which is currently in pre-production. Cineduction has also released a full-length feature film, The Innocent. Says Wyndham: “I’m excited to be bringing life to independent features.” We are too!
Hollie Olson’s first feature, Gabby’s Wish, premieres in Portland on March 8th

Director’s Letter
Paying It Forward We know not everyone in OMPA works in film or TV, but please, particularly if you are working because of OPIF (Grimm, Leverage, Portlandia, Paranorman, Jingle All the Way, Gone) or one of over a dozen iOPIF projects (Hoops and Yoyo, The Digits, Wilderness of James, The A List, Monster School, Redwood Highway, Wake Before I Die, House of Last Things, Cell Count, Shiver) think about those folks who are not working right now, and help us expand the production investment fund by 100%. How? It’s simple: Tell your story to your Oregon legislator. It really makes a difference for a legislator to hear your honest, personal story. Twice as much OPIF means twice as much work, so help us all out. The Governor’s proposal to increase OPIF (the Oregon Production Investment Fund) is called HB 2267 and it is working its way through the halls of the Oregon legislature this month. You can help by emailing or calling your state representative or state senator to urge their support (state, not federal - so not Senators Wyden or Merkley, and not Representatives DiFazio, Blumenauer, Bonamici or the rest). And do not spam the entire legislature please. But if you know who you state senator or state rep is, call or email them with a message like the following (in your own words). And blind carbon-copy (“BCC:”) us at info@ompa. org: Dear ____________, I would appreciate your support of HB 2267 and the Governor’s proposed enhancement of OPIF (the Oregon Production Investment Fund). I understand that the research of the Oregon legislative committees has found this an extremely productive measure for growing jobs in a variety of sectors throughout Oregon by recruiting investment into our state. As someone who works in this industry, I would like to make myself available to you with my personal experience. Since Oregon began seeing additional business as a result of the OPIF program, I ... [then please tell a personal story about how your career or business has been positively influenced by the increased shooting in Oregon since OPIF or iOPIF was initiated - even if it is tangential, like “there wouldn’t be resources in Oregon for me to learn or improve in my trade.”] Thank you for your service to Oregon. Your name and your address With sincere thanks,
Tom McFadden, Executive Director

Screenwriters: Call For Entries FiLMLaB’s 2013 “Script-To-Screen” Competition Willamette Writers is soliciting entries for the 2013 FilmLab’s “Script-to-Screen” short film scriptwriting competition. We seek writers with the ability to tell a compelling story quickly and cinematically, while adhering to a theme and a practical eye towards real-life movie production. Unique to scriptwriting contests, the Script-to-Screen Competition grand prize is this: we will produce a short film based on the winning script! The winning writer will have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with our production team, attend the filming – in short, to experience the collaborative process of filmmaking! The resulting film will premiere at the 2013 Willamette Writers Conference in August. For more information, check out our complete Rules and Submission Guidelines.
Guidelines: Scripts are limited to 7 pages, in standard screenplay format. Stories should unfold within one principal location and feature nor more than four main characters. Writers are encouraged to incorporate this year’s Conference theme celebrating the Northwest’s “Fresh Brewed” coffee, breweries, and/or creative spirit. Scripts will be judged on their writing, adherence to theme, and on the practicality, given time and budgetary constraints, of producing the story – in other words, how well will this story translate from the script to the screen? Submission period: Scripts must be received by Willamette Writers no later than Friday, March 15, 2013 to be considered. Entry Fee: $25 for general public, $20 for Willamette Writers members.

South By Southwest to screen Portland filmmaker Sarah Gertrude Shapiro’s short film “Sequin Raze” Portland filmmaker Sarah Gertrude Shapiro short film “Sequin Raze” will have its world premiere at the South by Southwest 2013 Film Festival. Sequin Raze is a dark comedy about the inner workings of a fictional romantic reality TV series. The film stars Anna Camp (True Blood, Pitch Perfect), Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under, American Horror Story) and Ashley Williams (How I Met Your Mother). After being invited to participate in the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women, the film went on to have a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign (meeting its original goal in one day) and was the recipient of the Women in Film Portland’s Faerie Godmother 2012 Grant. Shapiro has been a producer and director with the Wieden + Kennedy agency for seven years. OMPA member David Cress (Portlandia, Paranoid Park, Restless) and Erin Donovan (The Adults in the Room) served as Executive Producers on the film. Cress says: “I’ve been a fan of Sarah’s for a long time now; when I read this script I couldn’t put it down. It’s hilarious and scathing. Like Lena
Dunham crossed with Aaron Sorkin.” Shapiro’s previous short film “2nd Best,” about a couple who come home from a stressful trip to IKEA and decide to start processing their relationship, was shot over one weekend with non-professional actors. The film debuted at the San Francisco Frameline Film Festival and went on to screen in Philadelphia, Seattle, Boston, Milwaukee, Tucson, London, Amsterdam, Brisbane, Rome, Milan, Mumbai, Helsinki, Tel Aviv and more.

Emily Alexander’s Preschool of the Arts Presents a One-Day Intensive Acting Workshop Saturday, February 23rd, 10:00am - 4:00pm Cost: $50.00 No matter what school of performance you adhere to; Meisner, Stanislavsky, or Adler... the importance to making choices is paramount. This class, taught by Steve Coker, is an informed and inspirational deconstruction of the performance process, the creation of character and the craft of listening. Most acting classes try to teach you someone else’s methods, in this class we strive to discover your specific process, your unique perspective on Character, Movement, and Performance Interaction. We begin by exploring scenes designed to guide performers to making specific and strong choices and decisions about character. We will discuss the origins of believable characters and the importance of listening and trust. I don’t believe in ‘acting’ I believe in ‘reacting’ and the art of listening. In this seminar you start performing scenes right away, discussing the fundamentals of ‘reacting’ while working with, critiquing and being critiqued by other students and your instructor in a safe and relaxed environment. “Steve’s class is a safe, healthy exploration of finding the truth within ourselves as artists, and helps us to have a better critical eye as observers. I feel more confident in my artistic opinions and choices, as well as have a renewed craving to better myself as an actor! HIGHLY
RECOMMENDED!” - Mandy Rose “Steve offers a stellar class where an actor can grow from week to week, month to month, and keep the creative acting juices flowing. Then when the big audition comes along, the actor is ready to go into the room fully prepared and tuned up. Steve is also a truly naturally gifted teacher who really knows his stuff, relates amazingly to actors with varying levels of experience, and with his background as a director, writer, actor, and producer, he brings so much to the table. Highly recommended!” - Meredith Beck To register for class contact Steve Coker at stevecoker@screenworksink. net or call 503-888-5141.

Rock N Roll Mamas to Have Portland Preview at POWFest Thursday, March 7th at 7:00pm Hollywood Theatre Portland filmmaker Jackie Weissman is excited to announce the Portland preview of her documentary Rock N Roll Mamas on Thursday, March 7, 2013 – the opening night of The Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival (POWFest). Rock N Roll Mamas is a 60-minute documentary about three indie rockers who strive to follow their creative dreams and raise their children. Over the course of six years, director Jackie Weissman followed Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses, Zia McCabe of The Dandy Warhols and Portland hip hop artist, Ms.Su’ad. Rock N Roll Mamas features performances from all of these artists plus original music by Zia McCabe. The observational style of this film takes the viewer into the daily grind of these women’s lives. We watch the women as they tour and perform, go to play dates, juggle childcare and get to gigs. It is a mixture that isn’t the glamorous life we imagine when we think of rock musi¬cians; it’s the reality.
Zia McCabe of the Dandy Warhols with daughter Matilda Louise.
Ms.Su’ad with son Moses
Rock N Roll Mamas is Weissman’s first feature documentary. “After beginning work on Rock N Roll Mamas in 2003, I am so excited to be showing it publicly at POWFest!” says Weissman. “I’m especially excited to show it to the crew, subjects and the Portland community.”

Varsity Cheerleader Werewolves From Outer Space… Live! A live cabaret style, sci-fi adventure March 21 & 22 in Portland ScreenWorks Ink and Talisman Films LLC are proud to present this live, interactive, cabaret style, comedic homage to 80s sci-fi and coming-ofage films in two performances based on a screenplay by OMPA Member Steve Coker. “Varsity Cheerleader Werewolves From Outer Space” will be performed in Portland at the Jack London Bar (529 SW 4th Ave) on March 21st at 7:30pm and again on March 22nd at 8:00pm. Admission is free. The show stars MAD TV’s Brooke Totman as Staci. Rounding out the cast are local film and stage actors Todd Robinson, Ira Kortum, Jamie Langton, Illya Torres, Carly Ingebo Schroeder, Heather Harlan, Dug Martell, Wynee Hu, Maryanne Glazebrook, Cyndi Rhodes and Ithica Tell.
The Story:
In 1986, shortly after teen roller derby girl, Staci, is moved to a small town to salvage her future, a parasitic alien race crash lands in the woods and possess her High School’s Varsity Cheerleaders. Now it’s up to Staci, the town’s bad boy, Dean, and their ancient grandparents to save the school, their town, and the world.
About the Show:
In 2011 Writer/Director and Producer, Steve Coker wrote this fun sci-fi screenplay. The full-length feature film script caught the attention of a local film producer and the two of them began to develop the film for production, even going so far as to shoot a live-action trailer with Daniel Baldwin. Having a background in live theatre, Steve couldn’t resist the opportunity to produce a cabaret version of the show and tour it to local bars and small venues. This production will be the first of these shows which feature sexy cheerleaders, rebellious youth, evil aliens, 80s music, cabaret dance numbers and puppets! We performed the show on January 24th to a standing-room-only crowd and it was a hit. We were immediately asked to revive the show for dates in February and March.
