Director’s Letter Oregon’s Got Talent! On Friday September 28th, OMPA and New Belgium Brewing host “Oregon’s Got Talent,” an event to celebrate the breadth and excellence of the actors in Oregon’s media production industry. As initiated last year, Superfine Actor Awards will be awarded to recognize acting excellence and dedication to community. Don’t expect a signing and dancing contest like you see on TV at least not in competition. Singing and dancing is highly encouraged by all the attendees, actors, crew vendors, producers, and industry supporters. (We just told the panel of celebrity judges to stay at home.) Oregon’s Got Talent will also be a fundraiser and official launch of the bi-partisan Oregon legislative caucus for media production. A $10 suggested donation will be collected at the door, which goes to candidates who support the development of jobs in Oregon’s media production industry. A hefty portion of Oregon’s billion-dollar media production industry comes from the OPIF program, and this is our chance to give back to the legislators who make that program happen. Everyone we talk to about growing jobs and business opportunities in Oregon’s industry loves this program, so there is no partisanship here – just cooperation and support. Oregon’s Got Talent is one among a host of September events that celebrate our local creative economy. September 26th and September 27th is the ABS Media Technology Expo at Left Bank Annex in Portland, also supported by OMPA. This free two-day event for film, video and broadcast professionals will feature educational sessions, networking opportunities and an exhibit hall showcasing equipment from a large variety of manufacturers. OMPA also supports the Portland Digital Experience, billed as “Capturing the creative spirit” of our “Technology and Startup Culture”. Here’s a quick run-down of September events: Wednesday, September 5th through Sunday, September 9th: Portland Digital Experience at Music Fest Northwest in Portland Thursday, September 13th through Sunday, September 16th: XOXO Festival in Portland Wednesday, September 26 and Thursday, September 27: ABS Media Technology Expo Weds: 9am-6pm, Thurs 9am-5pm, at Leftbank Annex, Portland Friday, September 28: OMPA’s Oregon’s Got Talent OMPA’s Celebration of Actors and Oregon’s Creative Economy 7pm - late at Indent Studios, Portland We hope to see you at one or another.
The CALLSHEET is published monthly by the Oregon Media Production Association, a 501c(6) non-profit representing Oregon’s film, video and multimedia industry. © 2012

OMPA’s Northwest Film Finance V OMPA is proud to announce that Northwest Film Finance V will take place on October 13. This is a perfect opportunity for producers, executive producers and financial partners to raise their game about capturing finance, managing distribution, and ultimately achieving profitability for their production. If you know an indie producer who “just needs someone to give them the money” to make their first film or online content, refer them to these eyeopening panels on negotiating distribution, accessing state of Oregon and other private funding resources, attaching union acting talent, and more. Northwest Film Finance forums are conducted by professionals who have a vested interest in continuing to grow Oregon’s film and television industry. Main presenters at Northwest Film Finance V are Michael Zoumas, executive producer of LAIKA’s Coraline and former Miramax/ Dimension Films senior vice president of production and development, and entertainment attorney Larry Weinberg. Additional programming will be tailored to continue the dialog of past workshops, track progress of Oregon productions in the international marketplace, and identify new business models for success.
Growing this industry is a team effort and we continue to celebrate and appreciate your role in making this happen. If there is any way you can again support the effort as a sponsor, a consultant or panelist, or just by attending the event, we’d love to have you there. Sponsors and supporters already include the University of Oregon Cinema Studies program, Southern Oregon Film and Television, and the Governor’s Office of Film and Television. If you have any questions about these opportunities, please contact Jack Norton, Northwest Film Finance V producer, or OMPA executive director Tom McFadden.

Portland 48HFP Wrap Up The Ninth Annual Portland 48 Hour Film Project blew through Portland like a tornado of creativity last month. Over 50 short films were created between August 10-12, and over a thousand people got a chance to see what the region’s most talented and daring filmmakers came up with this year. As well as drawing their genres from “The Cruel Hat of Fate,” each filmmaking team had to incorporate the following required elements in their films: CHARACTER: Gabriel or Gloria Wardell: Instructor PROP: An iron LINE: “It takes one to know one” Portland’s Best Film winner, “Bad Time” by team Bad A 5K will screen at Filmapalooza with other city winners from across the world, get a trophy, and go up against other city winners for a chance to win $5,000. 12 films from the 2012 tour will also screen at the Cannes Film Fest. The judges (Tara Johnson-Medinger, Andy Blubaugh and Andy Mingo) definitely had their work cut out for them this year as the overall quality of the entries was the best to date. The complete list of the “The Best of PDX48HFP 2012” follows: Best Film Runner Up - “Gloria69” by RodneyDangerFilms Best Directing - “Gloria69” by RodneyDangerFilms Best Writing - “It Takes 1 To Know 1” Out of State Bank Best Writing (Runner Up) - “Rule #7” by Dark Pines Best Acting - “Diaper Run” by Greenglass Best Editing - “B-Shift” by Golden Axe Best Cinematography - “Bad Time” by Bad A 5K Best Sound Design - “Exodus” by man. cookie.dead Best Use of Character - “The Technique” by Doozy Media Best Use of Prop - (TIE) “Edge of the

With 50+ teams and an average of 15 people working on each team, that means over 750 people were completing films in one weekend! There are plenty of ways to get in on all the Portland 48 Hour Film Project action. The web page is www.48hourfilm.com/ portland_oregon. The Facebook Page has the latest updates—see www.facebook.com/ Portland48HourFilmProject—and there are lots of discussions, local events and more going in the Facebook Group. Our Mission The 48 Hour Film Project’s mission is to advance filmmaking and promote filmmakers. Through its festival/competition, the Project encourages filmmakers and wouldbe filmmakers to get out there and make movies. The tight deadline of 48 hours puts the focus squarely on the filmmakers— emphasizing creativity and teamwork skills. While the time limit places an unusual restriction on the filmmakers, it is also liberating by putting an emphasis on “doing” instead of “talking.” Excited crowds outside the Hollywood Theatre between screenings.

Support Schools & Arts Together with the Arts Education and Access Fund Today in Portland there are nearly 12,000 children attending schools that do not have any art, dance, drama, or music instruction. And the rate of decline for arts education here has been shockingly steep. Portland is home to six school districts and in the last five years, two of them (Parkrose and Centennial) have cut their arts and music teaching staff by half, while our largest (Portland Public Schools) has dropped all arts instruction in 22 schools in just two years. With the Arts Education and Access Fund, the City of Portland will restore arts education by providing stable, long-term funding for certified teachers for
every elementary school serving Portland residents and support arts organizations citywide to improve access to the arts in every classroom and community. Join us at by clicking here and ‘Like’ us on our Facebook page. After years of losing ground, we can ensure our children have the future they deserve, today and tomorrow.

Warren Pereira/W Films Completes Two Music Video Projects OMPA member Warren Pereira’s first electronic concert music video was shot in March of 2012 and is now available for general public viewing (see below). The headliner was Steve Aoki on his Deadmeat Tour along with Datsik, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike. Conditions were tough with extreme lighting changes and no way to white balance, but Pereira pushed his hand held 5D MK II to its limits. In post, cutting and color was fun, and Levy of Todd-AO delivered again on a fantastic mix. Pereira also completed a music video of the Dillon Francis + Feed me concert in Eugene, OR. Pereira acted as Director, DP, Editor and Colorist on the second video. Aaron Levy from ToddAO delivered another fine audio mix.

Standards & Practices for Oregon’s Talent Community
The following standards reflect common practices among talent agents and performers in the professional industry. They have been developed based on both California and New York state law and endorsed by a community of Talent Agents, Performers, Producers, and the OMPA.
3. Fees A Talent Agent may advise performers about opportunities that will better their career. Professional services such as headshots, workshops, lessons, show reels, online casting support sites, etc. may be required by a Talent Agent. However, fees for such services either to the Agent or specific vendors must not be mandatory in exchange for representation or procurement of employment. A Talent Agency website has certain maintenance costs that may be passed on to performers in order to be included online, however website fees must not be required in exchange for representation or procurement of employment.
1. Definition A Talent Agent works employment for performers.
procure
4. Casting It is considered standard that a Talent Agency does not direct casting in their usual course of operations.
2. Payment Professional Talent Agencies shall only be paid when their performers are booked to work. These payments take the form of a commission, and are detailed in a performer’s contract with their Agent. They take the form of a percentage of gross earnings, and only once the work has been performed and paid for by the client.
5. Employment Opportunities Professional performers should never pay for the opportunity to work. In other words, genuine work opportunities come with an offer of fair pay for fair work. Whether solicited by an agency, producer, or anyone else, professional employment does not come with requirements to pay in advance for the opportunity to work.
OMPA, along with a slate of representatives of and stakeholders in the Oregon talent community, has assembled and approved an addendum to the Standards & Practices currently published annually in the SourceOregon Directory & Magazine. The entire text of the addendum is shown below.
