07.2015 Dear Members and Industry Supporters, This week, the Oregon Legislature reaffirmed its commitment to media production in our state. When Governor Brown signs House Bill 2171 into law, it will extend the sunset for the Oregon Production Investment Fund to 2024. This is a huge victory for our industry. The passage of House Bill 2171 would not have happened if not for the work of the OMPA. Our association engaged in the 2015 legislative session unlike ever before: our Interim Executive Director, Nathaniel Applefield, spent countless hours meeting with legislators and staff, working hard to bring our industry partners together to form a strong coalition. His leadership has positioned the OMPA as our industry’s hub of political activity, and this is just the beginning. If you work in media production in Oregon, it’s because of the work OMPA does on your behalf. Since 1982, OMPA has encouraged the growth of Oregon’s media production industry, resulting in more jobs for more Oregonians. OMPA is the collective voice and champion of Oregon’s creative industries, promoting the work of our members and advocating for our community in state and local government. This is a mission that our organization takes very seriously. Our Board of Directors and staff have been working hard over the last six months to reposition the OMPA to better fulfill this mission. Our legislative victory this session is a testament to that hard work. If you work in media production in Oregon, you already receive the benefits of OMPA Membership. As a producer, people ask me all the time, “Why should I join the OMPA?” This is what I tell them: Because we need someone to champion our industry; because we need an advocate in government; because we need a collective voice… Because you’re already receiving the benefits of OMPA Membership. OMPA’s strength is its network of members. Make this network stronger, I tell them. Join the OMPA today! If you work in media production in Oregon, please join the OMPA today. I want to thank members of our legislative coalition: Electric Entertainment, LAIKA, AFL-CIO, Koerner Camera Systems, IATSE Local 488, SAG-AFTRA, Pacific Grip & Lighting, Hive FX, Cast Iron Studios, The Cities of Portland and Eugene, MPAA, and the Oregon Game Organization. Tremendous thanks also to Tim Williams, who hit the ground running and has done a terrific job this year at Oregon Film. We are truly stronger when we stand together, and we share this victory as a community. Thank you! Sincerely, David Cress Producer OMPA President

Registration Now Open for the 2015 OMPA Classic Fundraiser! On Friday, August 21st, industry members from across the state will converge at Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City for the annual OMPA Classic! The OMPA Classic is our biggest annual fundraiser, which provides an opportunity for industry professionals to network in a relaxed setting, while also funding the Northwest Film Center’s Oregon Media Arts Fellowship and raising much needed additional funds to support our organization.
Sponsorships of the event are also available. See the sponsorship webpage for the full list of sponsorship opportunities. The 2015 OMPA Classic features a variety of activities and opportunities to network for both golfers and non-golfers alike. In addition to golf, attendees can participate in a croquet tournament, enjoy an off-site wine tour, play lawn games or go on a nature walk, or simply enjoy the course with a cocktail in hand.
The spirit of the event is one of pure enjoyment. But that’s not to say that some serious business doesn’t take place, both on and off the golf course. Attendees have been known to start exciting new business relationships at the OMPA Classic, and business owners, freelancers and students alike interact in this highly social environment. The evening activities include a casual dinner with entertainment and both a live and silent auction to raise money for the Media Arts Fellowship. The Oregon Media Arts Fellowship(s) provides financial and other support for production expenses to enable Oregon film or video artists to create or complete new work or works in progress. The Media Arts Fellowship recognizes and assists media artists whose work shows exceptional promise and who have demonstrated a commitment to film or video art. The OMPA, in conjunction with the Oregon Arts Commission, funds the program. The Northwest Film Center/Portland Art Museum administers the Media Arts Fellowship program. The key strength of OMPA is its network, representing every facet of media production throughout the state. OMPA members are Oregon’s media production community, known for its spirit of fellowship and solidarity. We hope you will join us at the 2015 OMPA Classic to network and celebrate our vibrant and growing media production industry!

Ashland Independent Film Festival Reflections As we approach our 15th anniversary next April, we thought we’d take a peek into the past with highlights from all the previous Ashland Independent Film Festivals. First up: 2001 & 2003, including a look at the event poster for each year.
The 1st AIFF — October 4-8, 2001 The inaugural Ashland Independent Film Festival was a little bittersweet, taking place a month after 9/11. Founders Steve and DW Wood had spent three years planning the event, with generous support provided by grants from the City of Ashland, John C. Schweiger of Coming Attractions, Inc. (including use of the beautiful art-deco Varsity Theatre), and a dedicated group of community volunteers, donors and sponsors. The 1st AIFF screened an ambitious slate of 73 films, all but one an Oregon premiere, over four days in October—that’s right, October!
The Opening Night Film was THE WISE ONES, the feature directorial debut of Chris Matheson, best known as the co-writer of BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE.
The 2nd AIFF — April 3-7, 2003 It looks like we skipped a year, but really, we just moved the film festival from four days in October to five days in April to take advantage of spring! ALthough it was a great move for the community and the enjoyment of our filmmakers and patrons, it’s always been a bit difficult to explain why the 10th annual AIFF took place in 2011 or why the 15th annual AIFF will be in 2016. Now you know! Highlights of the 2nd annual AIFF included a special screening of the 1991 indie classic THE RAPTURE starring David Duchovny and Mimi Rogers. Rogers and screenwriter-director Michael Tolkin were in attendance for a scintillating Q&A. 2003 was also the first year of Denny DeBey’s celebrated forged steel film reel award.

Hand2Mouth and Artists Rep Present Time, A Fair Hustler A response to Gus Van Sant’s MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO Twenty-five years ago, Gus Van Sant’s film MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO showed the world a decomposing Portland of wanderers, hustlers and thieves. Its characters were restless and free, but bound together by the perils and pleasures of a seedy city. Hand2Mouth’s new play asks where they are now. Have they been destroyed or absorbed by a changing Portland? In Time, A Fair Hustler, six characters witness, remember, and recover their past to reveal where we have come from and what we have become. The project has Gus Van Sant’s enthusiastic approval. He recently noted, “Hand2Mouth and Jonathan Walters are great experimenters with theatrical form and I look forward to seeing what they do with MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO on the 25th anniversary of its filming. I am sure it will be fantastic.” Time, A Fair Hustler is directed by Jonathan Walters, with a cast that combines Hand2Mouth company, four Portland actors, and Erika Latta of New York’s Wax Factory. Latta will revisit the character of Scott Favor (played by Keanu Reeves), while Hand2Mouth’s Julie Hammond will play Mike Waters (played by River Phoenix). Jason Rouse, of Live Wire, will play Gary; Anne Sorce of Push Leg will play Hans; Jean Luc-Boucherot (Grimm and Portland Playhouse) will play Bob, and father figures; Jenni GreenMiller will play Mom. In addition to the show, Hand2Mouth is organizing a month long celebration of Van Sant and Portland’s past and present. “Gus Van Sant: 30 Years” is a month of films at Clinton Street Theatre
and McMenamin’s Mission Theater, curated by Mario Falsetto, author of Conversations With Gus Van Sant. “Portland Then and Now” is a series of events scheduled for after the Sunday matinees which use MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO as a starting point for an investigation of how Portland has changed in the last twenty five years. Scheduled events include a walking tour that features sites from the film; a panel co-sponsored by Outside In that considers how conditions for young, queer, homeless youth have changed in the last 25 years; and on the last day of the run Hand2Mouth will host “A Funeral for Old Portland” which will feature eulogies for ‘old Portland’ and a public discussion about what of ‘old Portland’ we want to leave behind and what we want to take with us going into the future. WHEN: Previews July 28-30 Opening July 31 Running July 31 - August 16.
