Director’s Letter Portland’s Creative Conference–known by its catchy URL “cre8con”– lives up to a rich history of bringing high-quality presenters to light a fire of inspiration for creative professionals. It is a also a celebration of Oregon’s unique position as a creative industry Mecca, a distinction which underscores our region’s extensive professional talent and our commitment to grow the region as a business and entertainment solution provider, and the jobs that go with that. To kick off the conference, OMPA hosts a party at Indent Studios, which also marks the 1-year anniversary of our inclusion of actors within the industry trade association. Anyone from the local industry knows the depth and breadth of Oregon’s acting talent. Now actors are recognized even more as an Oregon production industry resource, alongside our world-class crew, locations, facilities, equipment and incentives. OMPA welcomes Jessica Beer Please welcome Jessica Beer as Administrative Manager of the Oregon Media Production Association. Jessica joins OMPA’s staff as a former member, as she was manager for the performing and film-scoring music ensemble 3 Leg Torso for the last seven years. Jessica’s skills include web application programming and project management, which will be well utilized as OMPA makes continued improvements to the functions of the industry directory SourceOregon.com, as well as to the efficient management of the association. She studied English Literature at Montana State University before fleeing to the weirder pastures of Portland, OR in 1999. OMPA’s goal is to add value to the increasing membership, and we are happy to have Jessica on board to support this effort.

Jingle All the Way comes to the Hallmark Channel In the tradition of TV’s best-loved animated Christmas classics, Hallmark Channel announces the world premiere of Jingle All the Way, a Hallmark Channel original animated special produced by Portland’s Bent Image Lab and starring one of Hallmark’s most lovable characters, Jingle the Husky Pup™, which premieres exclusively on the network, Friday, November 25 (8 p.m. ET/PT, 7C).
This is the first time that Hallmark Channel has ever brought a Hallmark product to life in a full-length entertainment production, and it is the first cable TV experience of its kind. The “Interactive Storybook & Story Buddy,™” available in Hallmark Gold Crown Stores, is part of a significant partnership from retail to on-air, digital and social media to promote the special. Hallmark Channel’s “Countdown to Christmas,” one of the most anticipated seasonal events in entertainment, features more hours of holiday-themed programming than any other network.
In Jingle All the Way, a spirited Husky puppy looking for a home at a Christmas tree farm instantly bonds with a young boy visiting with his parents. Selfless: Award-Winning Identity Theft Thriller to Air o View Trailer Approximately 8 million adults in the U.S. lost their identity to fraud last year. From September 13 to December 12, Comcast’s Video-on-Demand (VOD) will feature the eye-opening new thriller, Selfless, on what it can be like when you’re the victim of this $37 billion nightmare that changes lives forever. The brainchild of legendary comic book creators Jacob and Arnold Pander, this gripping drama takes viewers on a relentless journey into a brilliant young architect’s helpless descent into a reality where, technically, he no longer exists. As the story opens, Dylan Gray, a rising star in the ‘green’ architecture movement, is flying high from winning a prized high-rise commission when he unwittingly plants the seeds of his own destruction during a chance encounter with a deadly stranger. While waiting to board his plane home, Dylan sketches an unflattering caricature of fellow passenger Wesley Stone to impress an attractive flight attendant. As Dylan soon learns, the stranger he innocently ridicules is a convicted identity thief who has just made Dylan his next target. Calling it “stylish, smart and compelling,” the Oregonian noted that “the Panders clearly adore Alfred Hitchcock films, and it’s not hard to imagine the master himself devising this protagonist and the way he’s done in.” Filmed in Portland, Oregon’s trendy Pearl District, Selfless took top honors, including the “Best Feature Award,” at the Bend Film Festival, and was nominated for both the “Red Star” award sponsored by Heineken for “new visions” in filmmaking and the “Film for Change Producer’s Award” at the Santa Fe International Film Festival. Selfless stars veteran actor Mo Gallini, whom the Oregonian calls a “standout as the glowering, apoplectic identity thief who makes life hell for Dylan.” Joshua Rengert portrays the architect, October Moore
plays his fiancé, and Jen Hong assumes dual roles as both the flight attendant living in his building and her twin sister who is smuggled into the country illegally. Based in Los Angeles, Gallini’s portfolio of unforgettably menacing villains includes supporting roles in John Singleton’s 2 Fast 2 Furious; End of Days, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger; and David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive. Rengert has appeared in national commercials for Nintendo, Vonage, and Regent’s Blue Cross, as well as local spots for the Oregon Lottery. Moore, a graduate of the New Actors Workshop in New York, where she studied under director Mike Nichols, recently appeared on the TNT series, Leverage, and co-stars in the upcoming movie, Something Wicked, with Britney Murphy in her final role. Hong, who makes her feature film debut with Selfless, also recently co-starred in Leverage. Selfless marks the feature film debut for the Pander Bros., whose previous collaborations include such blockbuster comics as Batman: City of Light and Batman: Apocalypse Girl and graphic novels as the cult hits, GRENDEL: Devil’s Legacy and XXX (Triple X). The sons of prominent Northwest painter Henk Pander, the Pander Bros. were encouraged to explore their creativity from the time they could hold a crayon. Their early shorts played in downtown Portland nightclubs, even though the brothers were too young to be admitted. Around the same time, they landed their first nationally-published comic series, GRENDEL: Devil’s Legacy. The 12-issue series set a new sales record for an independent comic book (on a par with Marvel and DC Comics), merited nominations for the coveted Eisner and Manning Awards, and scored the industry’s top fans-choice award for the duo. Among other notable projects, the Pander Bros. created the Secret Broadcast comic book/companion audio CD tribute to pirate radio (which included electronica producers from throughout the U.S.); the first comic book designed to be read in any order: the Dark Horse mini-series, Exquisite Corpse;

on Comcast VOD and their own epic Amsterdam thriller XXX, also for Dark Horse (which Mondo 2000 hailed as “a comix masterpiece”). After studying 16mm filmmaking at the Northwest Film & Video Center, Jacob launched his career as a director with the Frontier Records’ music video, Light in You, for Dharma Bums, which received extensive play on MTV. Among others, the Panders conceived, directed and produced Hitting Birth’s Drive On, winner of a Oregon Cascade Award, and several electronica videos featured on MTV’s Amp. Soon after, they were hired by LA-based Palm Pictures to create a series of music videos, featuring such international electronic artists as Howie B., Fantastic Plastic Machine, Spacer, and DJ Miku in a narrative through-line to tell an audio-visual story. Wired magazine called their talent for raw storytelling “a knack for cinematic suspense.” Their 1995 cult classic, The Operation, in collaboration with visual artist Marne Lucas, took first place at the New York Underground Film Festival, 2nd place at the Chicago Underground Film Festival, and honors at festivals in Berlin and Copenhagen. Film Threat noted that The Operation was “the most unusual, inspiring and crowd-pleasing piece” in the NY Underground Film Festival. Wired described it as “the kind of video that can rewire your neural net,” and Northwest Film & Video Festival judge Dan Ireland told Willamette Week: “It’s like a 16mm version of going over Jupiter in 2001: A Space Odyssey!” The Pander Bros.’ last comics collaboration was DC’s Batman: City of Light – which, coincidentally, featured Batman pitted against a mad, ego-driven architect. Their most recent graphic novel was Accelerate from Image Comics, and Arnold’s Manga thriller, Tasty Bullet, in collaboration with conspiracy theory author Jon Vankin. During the last year, the Panders began transitioning into commercials and branded entertainment—the former for such clients as LG Electronics, for whom they’re also working on an upcoming 3-D spot; the latter
for such clients as Panasonic, LG, the Port of Portland, and the Portland Art Museum’s exhibition, “Allure of the Automobile.” They recently signed with mmmm Society for representation in both fields. For more of the Pander Brothers’ wide range of media projects visit the Pander Brothers’ site.

Fashionbuddha Shares the Monterey Bay Love By Lindsay Harrop
Oregon-based companies pride themselves on being amongst the first to leap beyond the established creative norms. And Fashionbuddha, an animation studio in Old Town Portland, thrives off this innate quest for innovation. “We’re a unique studio from the standpoint that we have animation and interactive under the same roof,” explains founder and Executive Director Robert Lewis. Fashionbuddha got its start ten years ago creating high-end flash websites but has since expanded into mobile apps, interactive installations and broadcast animation. “We were all under the same roof at the beginning because it made sense with those projects but now we’ve splintered to some degree and it’s just as exciting,” says Lewis. This dual focus helped Fashionbuddha when they were hired by San Francisco agency Engine Company 1 to create promotional spots for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Featuring the slogan: “Share the love,” the concept was for animals to share tender moments – actions which, though enchanting, aren’t part of the natural order. “The challenge was to make the creatures be convincing as real animals and yet make them do something they wouldn’t normally do,” says Lewis. In addition to Fashionbuddha’s animations, the on-camera talent and several background plates were shot by Atomic Productions using a Red One camera. Principle photography took place on location at the Monterey Bay Aquarium while the talent was shot on green screen in studio at Atomic.
The ads first aired last year, but were re-launched this summer as part of a new media campaign for the aquarium. Working with Engine Company 1 and New Yorkbased Monster Media, Monterey Bay built the Media Truck, an immense truck covered in LCD screens. Rather than being a simple billboard on wheels though, the team from Fashionbuddha was brought back to create a virtual ocean on the sides of the truck. Monster Media then added an interactive element so that passersby can use their smart phones to create customizable divers that will then dive in to the truck and swim with the animals. It’s this ability to move seamlessly between interactive programming and animation that puts Fashionbuddha at the cutting edge. “The diversity and constant evolution of challenges is really kind of cool with this company.” says Operations Manager Ben Kubany. Lewis agrees, “[The kinds of projects we take on] are not your typical marketing campaigns… We do a lot of research type work and the end result is that we can truly say that we’re doing things that have never been done before.”

Screening and Live Performance of Wheedle’s Groove at MusicFest NW The Northwest Film Center, Musicfest NW and Search Party are joining forces to present a special screening of the acclaimed musical documentary Wheedle’s Groove on September 7. The collaboration honors two of Portland’s great musical celebrations: Musicfest NW 2011, the third largest indoor music festival in the US., which takes place this year from September 7 – 11; and Reel Music 29, the Film Center’s showcase of music on film, which moves to the fall this year, taking place October 7 – 23, 2011. Kicking off Musicfest NW 2011, Wheedle’s Groove will screen at McMenamin’s Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) on Wednesday, September 7, at 7:00 p.m. Wheedle’s Groove, a 2009 documentary from director Jennifer Maas, wipes the dust from a stack of forgotten vinyl and takes a trip into the largely undocumented Seattle soul scene of the 1960s, which saw the emergence of artists like Robbie Hill, Patrinell Staten, and more, who remain largely unheralded decades after their zenith. Deftly illustrating how music shapes community, breaks barriers, and forges new paths, Wheedle’s Groove
reveals that Seattle’s gray-sky grunge owes a debt to musicians such as native Kenny Gorelick—yes, Kenny G.—who wailed soul sax in his hometown’s mostly black Central District years before becoming the coy prince of marshmallow jazz. After the film, music producer George Drakoulias will moderate a question-andanswer session with director Jennifer Maas, and at 9:00 p.m., the Wheedle’s Groove Band will perform. Red Door Produces Goodwill’s Circle of Hope A Great Dane named Vegas. A kids secret hideout in the woods. A county jail. A green auto repair shop. A beautiful day in the park. A family reunion. A circle that never ends. These elements and more went into the making of four spots produced for Goodwill by Red Door Films this summer. Directed by David Poulshock, three of the spots portrayed the personal stories of families whose lives have been changed by Goodwill. “They’re such compelling stories of personal triumph,” said Poulshock, “all of us on the crew were inspired.” The fourth spot was a remake of a commercial Poulshock and Red Door produced for Goodwill several years ago, called “Circle.” It follows the path of a single donation – in this case, a Tiffany lamp – and how it impacts the lives of people in different ways, from finding a job to learning English. All spots will begin airing this Fall. The spots were shot on the Arri Alexa over four days in multiple locations throughout Portland, including: the Wapato Correctional Facility, the new Goodwill Store on 122nd, Peninsula Park and Fernhill Park. Oregon Stills Exhibition at Hollywood Theatre On View September 1st to September 30th, 2011 Opening reception Tuesday September 6th, 6pm – 8pm Carefully selected by filmmakers Aaron Katz, Matt McCormick, and Kelly Reichardt and curators May Barruel and Justen Harn, this exhibition features stills from three films shot in Oregon: Cold Weather, Some Days Are Better Than Others, and Meek’s Cutoff. Crew photographers include Scott Green, Neil Kopp, and Greg Schmitt. This exhibition is supported by Oregon Film and Newspace Center for Photography and benefits the nonprofit Hollywood Theatre. About the filmmakers: Aaron Katz was born in rainy Portland, OR and went to film school at North Carolina School of the Arts. Immediately after graduating, he and two of his college roommates drove a 1963 Chevy Nova from North Carolina to Portland, OR in order to make Dance Party, USA, his first feature. Quiet City, his second feature, premiered at SXSW in 2007. Subsequently, Quiet City had critically praised theatrical runs in several cites, was nominated for the John Cassavetes Award at Film Independent’s Spirit Awards, and was featured on several year end top ten lists. Katz’ third feature, Cold Weather, was released in 2010 by IFC films and opened to similar critical acclaim. Katz currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. Matt McCormick is a filmmaker and artist who lives in Portland. His work crosses mediums and defies genre distinctions. McCormick has been a pioneer
in the field of distribution and exhibition: extensively touring his work, creating the video label Peripheral Produce, and founding the PDX Film Festival. Three of his films have been shown at the Sundance Film Festival, and his work has been screened or exhibited at MoMA, The Serpentine Gallery, The Oslo Museum of Modern Art, the Reykjavik Art Museum, The Seattle Art Museum, the Moscow Biennial, and Art Basil. Awards he’s received include Best Short Film from the San Francisco International Film Fest, Best Experimental from the New York Underground Film Fest, and Best Narrative from the Ann Arbor Film Fest. His film The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal was named in ‘Top 10 / Best of 2002’ lists in both The Village Voice and Art Forum magazine. Kelly Reichardt is an American director, co-writer, editor, and currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Film and Electronic Arts at Bard College. American landscapes and narratives of the road are themes that run throughout Reichardt’s work. Meek’s Cutoff, shot on the dry plains of Oregon’s high desert and featured in this exhibition, offers a vision of the earliest days of American frontier culture. Wendy and Lucy, filmed along the railroad tracks that surround an Oregon suburb, reveals the limits and depths of people’s duty to each other in tough times. Old Joy is an exploration of contemporary liberal masculinity, set in the tamed wilderness of the Pacific Northwest.

AIFF Executive Director Tom Olbrich to Step Down as ED The Ashland Independent Film Festival’s (AIFF) Tom Olbrich will be stepping down after eight years as Executive Director. The non-profit organization’s Board of Directors officially accepted his resignation at their July board meeting. “I have accomplished what I was hired to do in 2003 as the only paid employee at the time – to help the volunteer board build a successful film festival,” said Olbrich, “and I am ready to hand over the reins to a new E. D. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served with our incredible staff, dedicated volunteers and generous supporters. I am deeply committed to the continued success of the festival during this transition to new leadership.” “We are saddened to see Tom go after eight years of extraordinary work and dedication,” said AIFF Board President Ed McNulty. “Together with his staff he has made the AIFF one of the nation’s premier film festivals, one that offers an experience so welcoming and positive that it attracts the best films and filmmakers. The result is an unsurpassed festival experience that has become a vital part of our community and civic life.” Olbrich has agreed to stay on through the transition period as the board searches for a new Executive Director. “The board is unanimous in its deep commitment to the festival and all the staff who have worked so hard to make it what it is,” said McNulty. “Our search committee has begun to look for an Executive Director who can ensure the continued excellence of the festival and build on the foundation Tom has created.” The tenth annual Ashland Independent Film Festival in April set a record with 18,000 tickets distributed to 7000 attendees. The AIFF is a widely recognized and highly regarded festival screening 80plus independently made documentaries, features and shorts at the Varsity Theatre and the Historic Ashland Armory each year, as well as a monthly film series.
MovieMaker magazine named it one of the “25 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee,” citing a “perfect balance of organization, experience and cinema appreciation,” and the National Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences twice awarded the AIFF with rare festival support grants. The non-profit’s organizational structure comprises six year-round and nine seasonal staff supported by more than 325 volunteers, including an 11-member Board of Directors and 25-member Advisory Council. The AIFF receives community support through donations and memberships, and business sponsorship, advertising and in-kind donations including lodging for visiting filmmakers, food and beverage, and much more. Hempsters: Plant the Seed and A NORML Life now Available on DVD Hempsters: Plant the Seed, featuring Woody Harrelson, was released on DVD June 28th by Cinema Libre Studio. This lively documentary, directed by Michael Henning and produced by Diana Oliver, explores the reasons why the United States is the only developed country that still bans the growth of Industrial Hemp. Hemp—a durable fiber cultivated from plants of the cannabis genus—can be used for paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, construction, health food and fuel. Due to its relation to marijuana, it is illegal to grow in the U.S. under Federal law. Hemp is considered a controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act even though it contains minimum levels of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is the feature-length directorial debut for Michael Henning, who brings a wealth of experience to the film, having worked in the industry since 1978 with acclaimed artists such as Ron Howard, Mike Nichols, Bruce Beresford, Oliver Stone, and many others. Hempsters was a longtime labor of love for Producer Diana Oliver who came to Henning with the idea after Harrelson had planted the infamous four seeds. They began shooting footage for the documentary in the late ‘90s. The film won the “Best Work in Progress” Award at the 2001 Deep Ellum Film Festival in Dallas. Click here for more information. NORML or National Organization of the Reform for Marijuana Laws has long advocated for the decriminalization of cannabis for over
40 years. Its founder, current leaders and nationwide chapter representatives describe the patchwork of state and municipal laws that allow the sale of medical marijuana, while the federal government still regards cannabis as a dangerous narcotic. Recent legislation, which was modeled after the Repeal of Alcohol Prohibition, could very well end prohibition against marijuana. The National Organization of the Reform for Marijuana Laws, also known as “NORML”, has been a forefront leader on this issue along with many of its standout supporters. On August 16, 2011, Cinema Libre Studio proudly released A NORML Life on DVD which tells the story of the advocates fighting for the legalization of cannabis.
