OMPA and APP-NW Want to Help Get Your Finances in Order This Year! Two Events: Feb 13 & Feb 25 Most people in our industry have, at some point, been exposed to the romantic notion of the “starving artist” - that person who lives in poverty, works three jobs to make ends meet while pursuing his or her creative endeavors in the “off hours” and is often hungry (but nourished in other ways by those endeavors). It’s a romantic notion, to be sure, and our hat’s off to anyone who can make a life like that work for themselves and their families. OMPA and the Alliance of Professional Performers NW (APPNW), however, don’t believe our members have to starve to work in this industry. On the contrary - we believe that our industry is only weakened if those living in it are living “hand to mouth.” OMPA and APP-NW are coming together for two presentations in February aimed at helping freelance creatives do more than just “make a living.” A panel discussion on Financial Stability for Freelance Creatives will be presented Wednesday February 13 at 7:00 PM at the Collective Agency (322 NW Sixth Ave, Ste 200 in Portland). Moderator Harold Phillips and several financial professionals

will answer questions and discuss freelancers’ struggle to live a financially stable life in a field with unpredictable schedules and pay checks. Last year’s presentation was a big success, and the panel is looking forward to helping more creative professionals this year - so get your questions ready! Then, on Monday, February 25, Harold will moderate a panel discussion on Tax Preparation for Freelance Creatives at 7:00 PM (Location TBA - Click here to watch for details.) It’s no great secret that taxes for people working in our industry are a bit more complex than your average 1040-EZ... Once again The Bookkeeping Company’s Sandra Vincent, Michael Davidson from A&E Tax Services, and Andrew Pollack from Ameriprise Financial are making themselves available to answer your tax questions and help sort out the mystery of freelancers’ taxes. Both events are free for OMPA members and $10 for non-members. Luck, as they say, is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Learn the tools to help prepare yourselves for the next opportunity that comes your way, and get ready for a very lucky 2013.

Many thanks to McMenamins for hosting the event. The Mission Theater is considered the first theater to mix craft brewing with a fully-functioning historic movie hall, holding screenings and events for media-makers of all budgets and all stripes. OMPA’s board of directors was celebrated, as were the nominees and winners of the three OMPA Awards. Thanks as well to speakers Mary McDonald-Lewis, Representative Jules Bailey (House District 42), Amelia Porterfeld (Chief of Staff for Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek), staff members Jessica Beer and Tom McFadden, board members Janet McIntyre, Lisa Cicala, Christopher Toyne, and (live via video chat) President Michael Bard.

The filmmaking team of James Westby, Katie O’Grady and Jana Lee Hamblin were on hand to help us celebrate the Portland premier of “Hot in the Zipper”, and the now-classic Westby feature The Auteur (2008). Critical help was provided by Sharon Ross of Ross Media Relations, Erica Risberg, Suzanne Owens-Duval, Stephanie Strahan, Lucila Cejas Epple, Shivon VanAllen and OMPA’s Volunteer of the Year Sarah Lombardi. The event was concluded by a video of submissions from OMPA-member production companies, coordinated by David Krug and assembled by Karl Lind. Click here to view video online.

The Pander Brothers Premiere New Music Video Analog meets digital in the latest project by Portland’s graphic novelist and filmmaker sibling duo, the Pander Brothers. The Brothers presented their new music video for the digital comic release and companion soundtrack of electronic music, Secret Broadcast Redux, on Portland’s Decoy Recordings, on January 28 at Holocene in Portland. Based on Portland’s underground electronic music scene and pirate radio at the turn of the 21st century, Secret Broadcast Redux updates an urban tale of analogue rebellion with new music from Portland gone LA Hip-Hop & Dub producer, Polycubist (Skor Records), and Portland’s Hip-Hop scratch master, DJ Wicked (Just Plain Terror). The music video also features Portland’s B-Boy crew Def Con 5, who performed at the premiere.

“Way to Heaven” Receives Honorable Mention OMPA member Connie Kirk reports that the short film she appeared in last year—Tanner Parsons’ “Way to Heaven”— received an “Honorable Mention Award for Short Films” in the Love Unlimited Film Festival & Art Exhibition 2012-2013. The film had already been an official selection in the Columbia River Gorge International Film Festival.

Faux Film Festival Adds Additional Day The ninth annual Faux Film Festival runs Thursday March 28 through Sunday March 31 at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 Southeast Clinton Street, Portland, OR, 97202). The Faux Film Festival showcases faux commercials, faux trailers, spoofs, satires, parodies and mocumentaries. “The Faux” received so many great submissions this year that a fourth night was added to the normally three-night festival. In addition to dozens of funny shorts, The Faux will be showing four fantastically fun features. In Thursday’s feature Discoverdale, a film crew follows cult comedy rock band “Dead Cat Bounce” on a desperate quest across Europe to reunite lead singer Jim with his long lost father, who he believes is legendary Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale. Friday’s feature Operation Casablanca follows a dishwasher who gets mistaken

for a terrorist and must play the part to save his life. On Saturday, The Burlesque Assassins are beautiful, deadly and a vital weapon in the war on communism that threatens the free world. Burlesque star Kitten De Ville will be present for Q&A after the screening. Arguably the most buzzed about film at Sundance this year, Sunday’s feature Escape From Tomorrow was shot primarily at Disney World and Disneyland without permission from Disney. The film could get pulled in the event of trouble from Disney, but the pre-release version of the film is currently scheduled for Sunday night. Google “Escape From Tomorrow” for many articles on the Sundance screening, but watch out for spoilers. A full festival schedule and more details will be printed in next month’s Callsheet newsletter.

Ghost Mine Premieres on SyFy Channel Larry Overman and Stacie Sisk-Overman of OMPA member agency Take 2 lived in Eastern Oregon all summer to film a new TV show about the ghost mine on their property. Stacie notes that Larry “worked so hard to make this project happen! He went over and above to head up and find some of the miners involved as well as some of the other cast. We are very proud to also have a few of the behind the cameras crew hired too!” One of Larry’s goals was to influence an increase in tourism in the town of Sumpter, OR. Another goal Larry & Stacie had was to gain the social capital to be able to pay it forward with others in need as well as give to charitable organizations that mean so much to them. The resulting show—Ghost Mine—premiered January 16th on the Syfy channel. For behind-the-scenes info and other project developments, click here for the project’s Facebook fan page. “Coming Soon to a Theater Near You” Opens Feb 22 Admission Discount for OMPA Members

The No Social Life Theatre Company is proud to announce the opening of Coming Soon to a Theater Near You, a dark comedy about a young, naïve writer hoping to make it big in Hollywood. Our protagonist, Sam Hardwick finds an agent to help him turn his script into a blockbuster movie, but events do not quite unfold as planned. After Sam invests $42K, his agent assembles a motley crew of “professionals” to produce the movie: a secretary, a financier, a publicist, a washed-up actor and a director who, not coincidentally, is brother to an A-list actor. With every new person on the scene, our young writer watches his script and his dreams morph into a nightmare. Coming Soon to a Theater Near You is a hilarious peek into the B-movie Hollywood filmmaking experience and a play that every filmmaker and movie fan should see. Cast of local actors includes: Rey Drew, Nicholas Hope, John

Mosley, Kate Holdaway, Jeremy Gilhousen, Benjamin Kauffman, Robert Gebarowski and David Davis. Directed by Natalie Mayorga and OMPA Member Samuel Morris. Produced by Angela Larson and Samuel Morris. Presented by The No Social Life Theatre Company. Show dates: February 22nd - March 10th, 2013 Show times: Fridays & Saturdays 8pm, Sundays 7pm Address: 4038 N. Mississippi Ave, Portland Tickets: $15 general / $10 for OMPA members. Contact the box office for ticket purchasing and further information: 323404-6274 or no.social.life@snapif.com.

Willamette Writers FilmLab “Script-to-Screen” Contest Discussed on Feb 5 On Tuesday, February 5th, the Willamette Writers monthly meeting will return to the Old Church with a special program devoted to the 2013 Willamette Writers FilmLab “Script-to-Screen” Contest. Doors open at 6:30 and the meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. Last year, Willamette Writers held its first ever Script-to-Screen and Short Film Contest, which saw short film and script entries from around the country. The winning film finalists were screened at last year’s Writers Conference in August, and the winning short script, Haley Isleib’s “Alis Volat Propriis”, was professionally filmed and edited just in time for screening at the Conference. Willamette Writers Conference chair Stefan Feuerherdt will be joined by Ms. Isleib and director Christopher Alley (from NBC’s Grimm) for an open discussion about their experiences and a screening of the film at the February 5th meeting. Peter Field describes the experience in more detail: If you’re asking yourself, “How hard can it be to write a short-film’s worth of pages of action-packed haiku that will translate visually to an international marketplace, and adheres to three-act dramatic structure?” This is your chance to ask. What do you think, Haley? “It’s fun.” And film is expensive, isn’t it? What is the benefit to the filmmaker to have their short film screen at the Conference?

Stefan: “All screenwriters want to see their work come to life on the big screen. FilmLab Script-to-Screen gives our writers that chance.” What was it like putting the film together on such a tight schedule? Christopher: “It was … fun.” Keep that in mind, folks. The FilmLab Script-to-Screen Contest is FUN. Not only is it fun to write the words FADE OUT on the last page, it’s positively liberating. And now, with all the bugs worked out (thanks Stefan), this second year of FilmLab is sure to be even more exciting. And FUN! Stefan: “The contest is simple. Anyone can enter (except members of the Willamette Writers Board). Each script must adhere to strict guidelines for length and theme, and will be evaluated not only on the quality of writing, but also how practical the script will be to produce within a limited time and budget. Remember, the winning Script-toScreen entry will be professionally filmed this summer, and premiere at the 2013 Willamette Writers Conference in August. The FilmLab event at the Conference is free and open to the public. Fill it with your friends and family and manipulate the voting process shamelessly… I mean, the FilmLab screening audience decides the overall winner of the Short Film contest, and the winning film’s writer will receive a pass to the remainder of the Conference, as well as a meeting with a visiting Hollywood producer. You could be next!
