OMPA Elects Board President The Oregon Media Production Association board of directors met last month and elected its 2012 officers, including new president, Michael Bard, owner of recording and post-production facility StudioBard. The board president oversees the activities of the 29-year-old organization to support the mission of growing the commercial, film and television industry in Oregon. “I am pleased and honored to help direct the OMPA board’s activities to better serve and promote all those involved in Oregon’s vibrant media production industry,” says Michael Bard. “Between commercial and corporate projects and booming television, feature film, and transmedia collaborations, we are really in a great place to employ more Oregonians, engage local businesses, and create world class entertainment.” “The word has spread about the quality of our crews, actors and locations, and as OMPA president, I will actively encourage the consideration and inclusion of other local artisans in the post production, music, graphic design and animation fields,” says Bard. Michael brings experience as a 25+ year industry veteran composing music, producing audio and creating sound design for commercial, film and television clients, and was a recipient of OMPA’s own ‘Award of Excellence.’ He says he is “eager to celebrate the level of creative talent here.”

New OMPA Board President Michael Bard

While Oregon’s production incentive plays an obvious role in growing Oregon’s industry, local producers and television broadcasters still generate roughly 90% of the state’s production revenues. Says Bard: “I have a lot of faith that local producers and production companies will continue to build budgets in synergy with the out-of-state projects that bring money to Oregon.” The association promotes traditional and new media productions in Oregon of all budgets and sizes “so long as they are doing business legally and contributing positively to Oregon’s economy and reputation,” says Tom McFadden, OMPA’s Executive Director. Initiatives of the OMPA include publishing Oregon’s industry directory-SourceOregon and SourceOregon.com; working with labor, education and elected office holders to streamline and facilitate the process of doing business in Oregon; and upholding Oregon’s reputation as an increasingly popular place to do media production business. Other officers of the OMPA board elected this month are Lisa Cicala, elected to a second term as Vice President, joined by co-Vice President Christopher Toyne, and Timothy Troester, elected to his second term as Secretary/Treasurer. A complete list of current board members of the trade association are found online at www.ompa.org

“What is Television?” Conference at University of Oregon, March 1-3 International conference of television industry professionals and television scholars will explore the past, present and future of television What is television these days? How are digital technologies changing television? How are the internet and other new media changing the television industry’s model of production, distribution and consumption? What is the future of television? From March 1 through 3, 2012, these questions will be explored during a unique gathering of television and video industry professionals, media scholars and students, and government and community officials during the “What is Television” conference. The New York Times recently reported that young people are using other devices to watch TV: “Television is America’s No. 1 pastime, with an average of four hours and 39 minutes consumed by every person every day. But more and more young people are tuning in elsewhere. Americans ages 12 to 34 are spending less time in front of TV sets, even as those 35 and older are spending more...” In addition, innovations like internet-ready and 3D TVs have recently hit stores, and rumors abound that Apple is working on a game-changing TV set. Hosted by the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication, the event will feature plenary sessions, international paper presentations and screenings in an attempt to answer questions about the changing nature of television. The conference is open to the public. Online registration plus program details are available at http://journalism. uoregon.edu/whatistv/.

“For television, change is everywhere. Content is now produced using a wide range of digital technologies, distributed via the internet, mobile devices and a variety of video formats, and viewed at the convenience of consumers. But even with these alterations, it can be argued that television remains as significant as ever,” said Tim Gleason, Dean of the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. “This conference will bring together television professionals and scholars to explore television on the digital age, where it is heading, and what it means for producers and consumers alike.” Confirmed speakers to date include: w Bryce Zabel, President, Stellar Productions and former President of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences w Phil Oppenheim, Senior VP, Programming and Scheduling, Turner Broadcasting w David Cress, producer, Portlandia w Patric Verrone, writer, producer and former President, Writers Guild-West w Lloyd Segan, Principal, Piller/ Segan/Shepherd (independent content production company) w Toby Miller, Distinguished Professor of Media & Cultural Studies, University of California, Riverside w Horace Newcomb, Professor of Telecommunications and Director of Peabody Awards, University of Georgia The conference will open on March 1 at 5:30 pm with the Third Annual Communication and Society Lecture. The keynote speaker is Dan Schiller, Professor of Communication and of Library & Information Science, University of Illinois, who address “Digital Depression: The Crisis of Digital Capitalism.”

The Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival (a.k.a. POWFest) is excited to announce the programming highlights of its upcoming 5th Anniversary festival scheduled to take place March 8 – 11, 2012 at the Hollywood Theatre. As the only film festival in Portland exclusively dedicated to showcasing films directed by women and encouraging women to take on the director’s chair, POWFest is one of only a handful of festivals in the U.S. dedicated to women-directed film. With each year, the festival has continued to grow. Attendance has more than doubled and ticket sales have increased by 75%, exposing more works by women to the filmgoing community. Jurying submissions of over 400 films from female filmmakers around the world, POWFest organizers strive to include a broad collection of films by a range of filmmakers that include first-timers to veterans who have been working in cinema for many years. Over 30 directors will be in attendance this year. POWFest showcases the art and cinematic contribution of women filmmakers from around the world and

seeks to present films of any length, style or genre that have been directed or co-directed by women. By providing a platform to exhibit the work of today’s top women directors, POWFest is helping to create opportunities for women working in all areas of the film industry. By honoring female pioneers in film, POWFest provides the support and recognition necessary for the next generation of leading women filmmakers. In the past five years POWFest has hosted four prominent and very accomplished women directors: Allison Anders, Irene Taylor-Brodsky, Kathryn Bigelow and Gillian Armstrong. POWFest is especially grateful to have been awarded a Project Grant by the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) for the second year in a row for the 2012 festival. POWFest Spotlight: Stealing Roses by Megan C. Johnson OMPA member Megan C. Johnson wrote/ produced and directed a feature length comedy/drama feature film called Stealing Roses that will be shown in the Portland Women’s Film Festival (POWFest) at the Portland Hollywood Theatre on Saturday March 10th at 5pm. To purchase advance tickets to the screening for $7, visit the POWFest website. For more info, see http://www. stealingroses.com/. SYNOPSIS Walter (JOHN HEARD), a middle-aged man, down on his luck with no money, feels his back is against a wall with few options when his wife, Rose (CINDY WILLIAMS), develops throat cancer. Without adequate funds for medical treatments—too poor for health insurance, too young for Medicare and too “rich” for Medicaid—Walter resorts to drastic measures and decides to rob a bank. Walter steadily prepares for the big heist as he goes through his checklist for the bank robbery - getaway car, masks, guns – and casing the bank with an unfortunate run-in with the Bank Manager (BRUCE DAVISON). When he and Rose get fired from their only house cleaning client (HELENE CARDONA), Rose decides to become Walter’s partner and “wingman” in the bank robbery. Walter’s son, Johnny (MARK FAMIGLIETTI), a cop, moves back in with Walter and Rose to keep an eye on his suspicious father. The strained father-son relationship gets tested and reevaluated by Johnny as he struggles to come to terms with his father’s determination and as he learns his own lessons in love when he falls for SALLY (JOSIE DAVIS). When Rose turns out to be too ill to partake in the robbery – Walter enlists his eccentric friends (AL SAPIENZA, JUDE CICCOLLELA, VIC POLIZOS and JAMES GLEASON) to help. Walter, Rose and Johnny all struggle in

down-to-earth and comical ways as they all come to their own conclusions on what the final decision needs to be in their difficult situation. DIRECTOR BIO Megan Clare Johnson was born in Detroit, Michigan and received her B.A. in Cinema and Photography with a specialization in Film Production from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She pursued her love of storytelling by becoming a film editor in Chicago and Detroit in which she worked in post-production of national commercials before relocating to Portland, Oregon. Megan produced and directing her original screenplay, Stealing Roses, a finalist at the Austin Film Festival screenwriting contest, into a feature film in 2012. Megan is the owner of her production company – Mama Simba Films. Exploring the pitfalls and triumphs of human nature, Megan is an author and filmmaker who reaches out to make us think and experience a wide range of emotions through her unique voice. She especially enjoys giving us a relatable perspective on our daily lives. Consistently creating strong characters, with a sharp ear for dialogue found in her writing and films, Megan’s meaningful and mirthful writing delivers stories we can savor and enjoy.

Northwest Tracking Spotlight: Janet McIntyre’s FADED: GIRLS + BINGE DRINKING The Northwest Film Center presents the world premiere screening of FADED: GIRLS + BINGE DRINKING on Thursday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at the Whitsell Auditorium in the Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park Avenue, Portland, OR 97205). Raw and unflinching, FADED profiles the heartbreak and struggles of four young women battling the allure and grip of binge drinking. Holley skates with the Rose City Rollers, a semi-pro girls’ skating team. She plays hard and parties harder, bouncing from one job to another, including a stint at an X-rated bakery that ended when she broke in after-hours to decorate her friend’s ass—a rather spectacular Barbie dollthemed creation in pink and white icing. Other stories are more serious, such as that of Cassidy, a drama major and honor student, who has vowed to stop drinking after a girlfriend is date-raped at a party. (58 mins.) Director Janet McIntyre will be in attendance. Admission: $9 General; $8 Portland Art Museum Members, Students, Seniors Advance tickets: www.nwfilm.org More info is on the film’s official website, and you can view a trailer here.

The Northwest Film Center presents DRIVEN: The Films of Nicolas Winding Refn - March 8 –17, 2012 The Northwest Film Center celebrates the accomplishments of Danish film director Nicolas Winding Refn by presenting the scope of his work thus far at the Whitsell Auditorium March 8 – 17. Following the recent success of his film Drive—winner of the Best Director Prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival—Refn has reached a new level of international recognition. The Film Center looks forward to introducing audiences to the director’s previous works, including The Pusher Trilogy, which explores the criminal underworld of Copenhagen; Bronson, a stylized take on Charles Bronson’s metamorphosis into Britain’s most dangerous prisoner; Fear X, a psychological thriller starring John Turturro; and Valhalla Rising, a violent, visual tour-de-force exploring life among the Vikings in 1000 AD. Refn famously turned down a place at the prestigious National Danish Film School in order to write and direct his 1996 feature film debut, Pusher. Violent, edgy, yet emotionally gripping, it established him as an uncompromising new talent. Over the next fifteen years, his films have demonstrated a mastery of intense, visceral tales that explore haunted characters navigating the consequences of their own immorality. A complete list of films and showtimes is available at the Northwest Film Center website.
