Enjoy your options at this year’s festival. Designate a driver. Take the bus. Call a cab.

Plan a safe way home.

Sage Advice from the Professionals Here are a few tips from the people “in the trade whose business it is to attend wine shows. Prepare ahead This refers not only to making sure that you have alternate transportation available at the end of the evening, but also that you are not beginning your evening on an empty stomach. Though experts might say your senses are heightened when you are hungry, after a long day some food will help keep your energy level up and temper the effects of consuming alcohol. Remember, the Wine Festival focuses on the wines (pours are less than 1oz). Food is not available on the tasting floor, however, the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg operates a Bistro should you wish to enjoy some repast during the Festival.

Plan your attack As you enter the show, pick up your tasting glass and program and take a few minutes to survey the room and organize your route. Given there will be a huge number of wines to sample and limited time, it is extremely useful to decide where you want to go first. It may be sparkling wines first and dessert wines at the end. Or perhaps specific grape varieties such as sauvignon blanc or shiraz might be the target before moving on to other things. Whatever the plan, note the wines you have tasted, particularly the ones you like in case you want to purchase them at the on-site Liquor Mart.

Spitting is OK In fact spitting the wine after tasting is an essential part of the process for those who wish to maintain any objectivity during the course of the evening. Look for buckets or strategically placed receptacles into which, like the pros, you can spit the wine after swishing it around in your mouth. Learn from the winery representatives; each winery have experts behind their table. Feel free to ask questions or discuss your views about the wines that you taste.

Be courteous to other tasters The tasting area is likely to be quite crowded, especially around the most popular wines. Once your sample has been poured for you, and if you are not engaged in discussion with those pouring, let someone else in to try the wine. This will ease both potential congestion and irritability.

Go with your personal preferences After all is said and done you are the only expert when it comes to pleasing your palate. The best way to learn more about your own likes and dislikes is to try different wines and trust your own judgement. The best thing about a wine show is that it presents an ideal opportunity to try as many different wines as possible in a relatively short time. 2

Tasting Etiquette To help reduce congestion at winery tables: • Receive wine • Step back • Swirl – Sniff – Sip • Spit (or dump) in buckets • Rinse glass with a small amount of water (if desired)

Please Taste Responsibly

Welcome message Thank you for joining Wines of Chile at the Winnipeg Wine Festival. We are very happy to partner with the Special Olympics Manitoba and Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries for this event, and have assembled an outstanding set of wineries that bring the opportunity to discover and experience the broad range of high quality wines from Chile. The outstanding diversity of Chile’s wines stems from the country’s extraordinary geography and unique climate. Natural growing conditions create increasing opportunities to grow grapes organically, but the emphasis is now on how Chile can effectively and responsibly embrace sustainability in all its forms: Vineyard, Winery and Society. As a result of long term hard work, Chile is one of the world leaders in sustainability right from the vineyard to the table. In a significant step forward, Wines of Chile launched its Sustainability Code for the entire Chilean Wine Industry in September 2010. To date 49 wineries have been certified sustainable and this number only continues to increase. Regionality is the key to Chile’s stylistic development, and winemakers are striving to reflect the different terroirs that the country offers, especially in the cooler coastal areas, in the Andean foothills and between the mountains. The Coastal area boasts

a stunning 4,000 plus kilometer coastline that is the envy of the world and its influence has had a major impact on the quality of Chile’s wines. The Central Valley area extends across Chile from north to south through valleys that are emblematic in the country’s history. It separates the Coast from the Andes and produces more than 60% of the nation’s wines. The Andes are the longest and most extensive mountain range in the world and also the backbone of Chile’s cultural identity. Its climatic qualities have led the nation’s wine to become one of its most valuable treasures to be shared with the world. Again, thank you for joining us for this celebration of Chile’s exceptional quality and diversity. Experience why Chile is The Natural Choice… Saludos, Claudio Cilveti Managing Director, Wines of Chile

In 1965 most people were tinkering with cars in their garage. Davis Bynum was tinkering with wine. He created Barefoot Bynum Burgundy in that tiny room. But our spirited ways really began with our founders, Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey. In 1986, they took a sleepy label and gave it Sole. Both agreed it was time for a wine that didn’t take itself too seriously. So, Barefoot Cellars was created (Bonnie liked the name because it was easy to pronounce) and initially run out of their home. Callaway / Niner Wine Estates (California) – Booth # 46

ninerwine.com

Founded in Temecula, California in 1968 by legendary Ely Callaway of Callaway golf, the Callaway winery became the first premium wine producer from Southern California. With growing evidence of Pierce’s disease in Temecula, Callaway’s production was moved to the Central Coast in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Monterey counties. Later, when Ely Callaway sold the winery forty years ago, the new Callaway team appointed Winemaker Robert Pepi to identify and blend the best possible ‘coastal’ wines from Manteca and Monterey counties. The wine continues to be crafted in the same style originally pioneered using the latest cold-fermentation winemaking technologies. Niner Wine Estates is a family company dedicated to the concept that truly great wine results from talented people controlling the entire winemaking process from the vineyard to the glass. As the first winery in the Central Coast with LEED Certification in both tasting room and production winery, plus SIP Certification of two of our vineyards, our long-term view is reducing resource use. 100% of our fruit is hand-picked and hand-sorted in small batches from our three farmed sites: Bootjack Ranch resting on the eastern side of the Paso AVA, Heart Hill Vineyard settled on the western side, and Jespersen Vineyard nestled in the Edna Valley AVA to the south. Niner allows the grape to express itself in the purest form possible, and with our facility’s gentle transitions from one stage to another, the grape can speak loud and clear. CedarCreek Estate Winery (British Columbia VQA) – Booth # 51

The story of CedarCreek is rooted in the vision of Senator Ross Fitzpatrick. Although education and a business career led him away from the Okanagan, the dreams of what the fertile soil and climate of the valley could do were never washed from his soul. Years later his success in business afforded him the opportunity to fulfil his boyhood dreams by acquiring an orchard and small vineyard near Kelowna. Today, under his son Gordon’s leadership, CedarCreek has raised the bar. Our family’s knowledge of the terroir of the Okanagan and dedication to the craft have brought many awards and international acclaim, including twice being named Canada’s Winery of the Year. Passion, tenacity, care and hard work are vital but above all we seek truth in wine. And the results show in every bottle. Represented by: Vintage West Wine Marketing +058545 +858258 +163303 +567412

Members of the Chapoutier family have been working in the Rhône valley since 1808. A distant ancestor, Polydor Chapoutier, was the first to buy vines here, shifting from being a simple grape grower to making and trading his own wine. The pioneering spirit was already part of the family tradition. Today Maison M. Chapoutier is an estate that nurtures its vineyards with the greatest respect for natural balance and terroir. The family motto “Fac et Spera” – do and hope – says it all. These two words sum up all the patience and daring that this art demands: patience in relation to nature which presides; daring for the winemaker, who observes, chooses and assists. The wine will be the faithful expression of this alchemy. Represented by: Decanter Wine & Spirits +725770 +725788 +288944 +017868N

The winery, one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand, is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship. The wines, at first somewhat scene stealing, have refined over the years, developing a certain reserve, depth and maturity. Their ability to intrigue remains. Finca las Moras (Argentina) – Booth # 69

The name originates in the blackberry trees present in their estates located in the three main valleys of San Juan. The fruits of these trees, the blackberries, are called “moras” in Spanish; this is the symbol of their wines: fruit at its greatest expression. San Juan, especially regarding Shiraz and Malbec, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, is the new frontier for fine wine production in Argentina. The San Juan River is an essential source of irrigation for the area and supplies pure water from the Andes Mountains. San Juan offers unique conditions for high-end vines in the region. The Gustav Adolf Schmitt winery was founded in 1618 in the famous town of Nierstein on the Rhine River. The winery has been exporting wines for nearly 200 years, and was among those who pioneered overseas markets such as Japan and Canada. In addition to wines produced from holdings in the best vineyards around Nierstein, Gustav Adolf Schmitt has always offered a wide range of well-known Rhine wines. In the 1970s, the winery decided to focus solely on the demands of foreign markets, allowing it to become one of the leading German wine brands in Japan and Canada. In 2004, Gustav Adolf Schmitt became a daughter company of Bernkastel-Kues based Moselland eG. With access to over 100 hectares of vines in Nierstein, Moselland eG produces wines of exceptional quality for Gustav Adolf Schmitt at all price points. Gabriel Meffre & Fat Bastard Wines (France) – Booth # 71

fatbastardwine.com

The Gabriel Meffre range reflects our roots: it’s in the heart of the Southern Rhône Valley, in Gigondas, that our winery has been created in 1936. At the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail mountains and not far from the Mont Ventoux, lie some exceptional Crus such as Châteauneuf du Pape and Gigondas or the famous “Plan de Dieu” terroir, which owes its revival to M. Gabriel Meffre. As a tribute to our visionary founder, we created a range of 9 different appellations, where each wine unveils the diversity of its terroirs. Each wine is named after the Patron Saint of the village or historical leaders that have positively influenced these townships. In order to produce high quality, fruit driven, food friendly wines, winemaker Thierry Boudinand sources grapes from several vineyards throughout the Languedoc region of Southern France. He partnered with British winemaker Guy Anderson to produce and distribute FAT bastard wine. Thierry’s long standing relationship with the growers in the region has ensured consistently excellent quality for each Fat bastard varietal, vintage after vintage. By selectively choosing vineyards, Thierry is able to take advantage of the different terroir characteristics and blend a wine that is more harmonious and elegant than if he were restricted to a narrow district. Geyser Peak (California) – Booth # 72

geyserpeakwinery.com

One of California’s oldest and most renowned wineries, Geyser Peak Winery was founded in 1880 by Augustus Quitzow, a pioneer in Alexander Valley winemaking. Quitzow chose the original winery site in Geyserville for its vantage point of the famed geysers geothermal area. The white steam that billowed from the geysers along the mountain slopes provided the winery with a spectacular ‘view of the clouds’. Today, Geyser Peak pays fond tribute to its past roots in Alexander Valley as it sets forth on a new path into the Dry Creek Valley Appellation where the winery has recently relocated. Although the address is new, the commitment to the highest quality artisan winemaking is not. Geyser Peak will continue to “Reach for Peak” for many years to come. Hesketh (Australia) – Booth # 80

heskethwinecompany.com.au

The Hesketh Wine Company is a small, family owned producer of high quality, yet accessible wines. We work with our own growers and process our own wines like traditional wineries. But rather than attempt to be all things to all people from one region, our approach is to remain focused on the individual strengths of different South Australian growing regions. Each wine made by our winemakers Phil Lehmann and Charlie Ormsby is from a single vineyard or sourced from a small selection of specific vineyards in each region. Fruit comes from both our own vineyards in Coonawarra and the Barossa Valley, as well as from specialised local growers. Wines are made to a ‘Hesketh’ style, which is based on balance and complexity but more importantly, ‘drinkability’. Wines with generous flavours and aromatics, which also retain a sense of place – wines which reflect the vineyards they are grown in. jacksontriggswinery.com & inniskillin.com

Nestled into 11.5 acres of the Niagara Peninsula, the Niagara Estate Jackson-Triggs vineyard makes the most of this cool climate viticulture region. Premium quality grapes flourish around Niagara-on-the-Lake because of the warming and cooling influences of Lake Ontario and its proximity to the Niagara Escarpment. The Niagara Estate produces the same high quality wines that you would associate with similar world-class regions such as Burgundy, Oregon and New Zealand, but with its own distinctive characteristics resulting from the unique terroir of the area. On July 31, 1975, Inniskillin Wines, founded by Karl J. Kaiser and Donald J.P. Ziraldo, was granted the first winery licence in Ontario since prohibition. In 1994, Inniskillin established an estate winery in the rich terroir of the Southern tip of the Okanagan Valley Wine Region in British Columbia. Commenced as a partnership between Inniskillin and the Inkameep indigenous peoples (Okanaqueen Tribe), the launch of Inniskillin Okanagan coincided with the 20th anniversary of Inniskillin’s first grape crush in Niagara. In both Niagara and the Okanagan, Inniskillin offers a full collection of fine VQA wines made by dedicated winemakers and viticulturists committed to their craft. Jacob’s Creek (Australia) – Booth # 82

In 1847, a young Bavarian immigrant called Johann Gramp missed the wine he used to drink in his home land. Instead of changing his habits, he decided to start growing grapes and attempt to make the wine himself. It was a way of adapting to a new country, but still staying true to his character. What he didn’t know was that when he planted the Barossa Valley’s first commercial vineyard along the banks of Jacob’s Creek, he was also planting the seeds of one of the most popular wine brands in the world that would be named after the waterway. Today, Jacob’s Creek remains one of the most well-known, trusted and enjoyed Australian wines around the world. It delivers fresh, elegant and great tasting wines that show true varietal character. Jacob’s Creek is the number one bottled wine brand in Australia and Australia’s leading export brand for more than a decade. Jacob’s Creek Reserve are premium wines which are distinctive in aroma, flavour and style. Each grape comes from one of the three legendary South Australian regions, Barossa, Coonawarra and Adelaide Hills. These regions give each wine real personality and regional style. Martini (Italy) – Booth # 89

martini.com

In 1847, two men were lucky enough to meet in Turin. One was Alessandro Martini - a wine merchant. The other was Luigi Rossi - a master herbalist. Together they realised that their skills perfectly complemented each other. After much experimentation, they created a drink full of life and flavour to launch their new company, Martini & Rossi. The drink was none other than the now world famous MARTINI Rosso. For Martini & Rossi, the adventurous attitude was infectious. The more they experimented, the more they succeeded. Their next sparkling success was the MARTINI Asti, a sparkling white wine from the vineyard-rich Canelli region. Together they formed many of the techniques still used today to make Italy’s most famous sparkling wines and vermouth. In 2013, MARTINI, who has been innovating since 1863, is celebrating 150 years of excellence in wine and vermouth production. Represented by: Bacardi Canada Inc. +011137 +015748 +009276

19 Crimes (Australia) – Booth # 94

19crimes.com

Nineteen crimes turned criminal into colonists. Upon conviction, British rogues, guilty of at least one of the 19 crimes, were sentenced to live in Australia. This punishment by ‘transportation’ began in 1788, and many of the lawless died at sea. For the rough-hewn prisoners who made it to shore, a new world awaited. This wine celebrates the rules they broke and the culture they built. 19 Crimes wine is created by one of Australia’s most prestigious and heritage rich wineries. Winemaker, Paul Dahlenburg, takes his inspiration from traditional techniques where wine was made without electricity, just careful tendering and a simple touch. The winery was established in 1925 and is reputed for the quality of its wines. The smooth pebble soils here yield a voluptuous wine; heated by the burning daytime sun. At night, they restore their warmth for the benefit of the grapes and give the wines of Rasteau a special personality which sets them apart from all other Côtes du Rhône. ORTAS aims to express the natural aromas of their terroir and grapes, therefore, they use very little, if any, oak ageing. The average age of the vines are 40 years, though some plots are over 80 years old. Represented by: Trialto Wine Group +017870N +009188 +011367 +012789

Pelee Island Winery is Canada’s largest estate winery and is in the nation’s most southerly grape-growing region. Operating since 1979, Pelee Island Winery strives to offer the most unique wine varieties available as a result of the distinctive microclimate and geographical location of the island. Pelee Island’s geographic location south of the 42nd parallel, combined with the unorthodox geology of Lake Erie, creates a climate that differs greatly from the rest of Canada. The result is 295 frost-free days, in comparison with 201 frost-free days in Victoria, British Columbia. The warm, shallow waters found in Lake Erie create the perfect climate to grow grapes. Peter Lehmann is a true son of the Barossa Valley, a fifth generation Barossan who has been making wine over the course of seven decades. Peter Lehmann Wines was formed in 1979 by Peter Lehmann to assist the grape growers of the region who at the time were facing financial ruin. Today, the winery is now enjoying the rewards of these longstanding friendships and loyalty. Each vintage, over 140 grape growers supply Peter Lehmann Wines with the best fruit from over 900 of the best vineyards located throughout the Barossa. The Barossa Valley provides a diversity of soils and microclimates where the classic grape varieties grow well. The winemakers are indeed fortunate in the rich inheritance of viticulture skills and the old vines that produce low yields of grapes with great depth of character. Podera Dal Nespoli (Italy) – Booth # 103

poderidalnespoli.com

Almost a century ago, in 1929, in a part of Romagna between the Apennines and the sea, Attilio Ravaioli planted the rows of vines on the first vineyard he bought in the village of Nespoli, named Prugneto. This was followed by others, which are now part of the 110 hectares owned by the company. The location is in the Bidente Valley, which has territorial characteristics which are unique, almost magical, and the Sangiovese that is produced here is unique as well. The exposition of the vineyards and the geography of the valley, which keeps the vineyards well ventilated, contribute to a microclimate that is exceptionally ideal. The resulting wines - Sangiovese in particular are its most authentic expression. To our history and our land we can add our present, and the cutting edge technology used to move our company towards a successful future in the global market. Rebel Coast Winery (California) – Booth # 105

Rebelcoastwinery.com

Rebel Coast’s story starts off as a shot in the dark from a crazy man named Chip Forsythe. He studied winemaking in college at Cal Poly in SLO, and had been making wine in his backyard the whole time he was working harvests for nearby wineries. In the beginning, Rebel Coast Winery was just an idea… so naturally it needed some guts and stupidity to help make it real. Chip searched high and…high and found Doug Burkett. Somehow it only took 37 phone calls to trick Doug quitting his job, breaking a lease and leaving Sacramento behind to help build the winery. Things took off and Chip and Doug needed more help...and then a beautiful blonde angel appeared. Also a Cal Poly Tech grad, Kate decided a corporate job was not a fit for her, so she quit her job and started her crusade of late nights, wine and more wine. One can enjoy the view of this beautiful panorama from the new Santa Cristina winery, which came into existence in 2006 with the goal of acknowledging and renewing the tradition of the wine known by the same name, 60 years after the release of its first vintage in 1946. Viticulture requires a lot of commitment, a life-long dedication and the stimulus for continued innovation. Santa Cristina family wines come from this simple philosophy, the result of an indissoluble bond between the vines, the land and human labour. Sterling Vineyards (California) – Booth # 115

sterlingvineyards.com

Sterling Vineyards was born in the 1960s, a time when creativity and entrepreneurial spirit abounded, especially in California. In 1964, Peter Newton, once a paper broker in England, purchased 70 acres of land in Calistoga and became a Napa Valley winemaker. He planted grapes others did not, bottled varietals others did not, and built a dramatic winery with an aerial tramway. His innovations put Sterling Vineyards into the public eye and helped establish the Napa Valley as a premier travel destination. When Newton began planting his estate, Cabernet Sauvignon was the preferred variety. He planted the esteemed Cabernet, but his decision to also plant Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot was a bold move. Today, Sterling has over 1,200 acres in Napa and continues to produce wines of true varietal character that capture California in every sip. Stoneleigh Vineyards are located in the Northern Wairau Valley sub-region within Marlborough, a warmer climate which produces lush flavours. Stoneleigh supports environmentally sustainable practices and is a part of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ). The Stoneleigh Vineyard is located on the site of an ancient riverbed of stones that inspired our name. During the day these stones reflect the brilliant Marlborough sunshine up to the grapes, warming the vine even after the sun sets. The stony soil also imparts minerality, and the region’s cool nights allow for development of crisp acidity in the wines. The result is a unique wine, vibrant, elegant and crisp – the taste of Stoneleigh. Represented by: Corby Spirit & Wine Limited +016015 +016013N

The Strewn “style” emphasizes the flavours the grapes bring to the wine, supported by the aromas and tastes that develop through wine making. Strewn wines are made more in the classic European style than the soft fruit driven style from some new world wine regions. Strewn wines have tannin and acidity, which produce the refreshing quality that makes a wine a great accompaniment for food. Represented by: BKG Distributors +013134N +012084 +018312N +018313N

Gotham Wines’ aim is to produce the best value wine money can buy. Since the first wine was produced back in 2004, the mission has always remained the same – to produce fantastic wines in a style consumers actually want to drink. Gotham Wines takes its name from the pet name for New York City. It was the great American writer Washington Irving who first named New York ‘Gotham’ in his 1807 periodical, The Salmagundi. The first Gotham wine from 2004 was as black as ink and suited the Gothic profile perfectly. Since then, the range has expanded into the Gotham Regional Vineyard Series and Old Vine Series as well as Single Vineyard special release. Stalking Horse is a single vineyard series of handmade wines from key regions in South Australia. It all began with McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley in 2008. Today, the winery maintains its leadership role in California winegrowing under ownership and management by the Fourth and Fifth Generations of the Wente family and is California’s oldest continuously operated family-owned winery. Blending traditional and innovative winemaking practices, the winery draws from approximately 3,000 acres of sustainably farmed Estate vineyards to create an outstanding portfolio of fine wines. Woodbridge (California) – Booth # 138

robertmondavi.com

Robert Mondavi felt confident that the Napa Valley and California could ultimately create wines that would stand shoulder to shoulder with the great wines of the world. He founded the iconic Robert Mondavi Winery in 1966 near Oakville, California. After the outstanding success of his Napa Valley winery, Robert Mondavi pursued his second vision of creating delicious wines for everyday enjoyment. Having grown up in Lodi, Robert knew the region was ideal for growing wine grapes from which he could produce quality wines at affordable prices. In 1979, he acquired a local cooperative of grape growers, naming the winery after a nearby town – the Woodbridge Winery was born.
