Sage Advice from the Professionals Here are a few tips from the people “in the trade whose business it is to attend wine shows. PREPARE AHEAD

SPITTING IS OK

This refers not only to making sure that you have alternate transportation available at the end of the evening, but also that you are not beginning your evening on an empty stomach. Though experts might say your senses are heightened when you are hungry, after a long day some food will help keep your energy level up and temper the effects of consuming alcohol. Remember, the Wine Festival focuses on the wines (pours are less than 1oz).

In fact spitting the wine after tasting is an essential part of the process for those who wish to maintain any objectivity during the course of the evening. Look for buckets or strategically placed receptacles into which, like the pros, you can spit the wine after swishing it around in your mouth. Learn from the winery representatives; each winery have experts behind their table. Feel free to ask questions or discuss your views about the wines that you taste.

Food is not available on the tasting floor, however, the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg operates a Bistro should you wish to enjoy some repast during the Festival.

BE COURTEOUS TO OTHER TASTERS

PLAN YOUR ATTACK As you enter the show, pick up your tasting glass and program and take a few minutes to survey the room and organize your route. Given there will be a huge number of wines to sample and limited time, it is extremely useful to decide where you want to go first. It may be sparkling wines first and dessert wines at the end. Or perhaps specific grape varieties such as sauvignon blanc or shiraz might be the target before moving on to other things. Whatever the plan, note the wines you have tasted, particularly the ones you like in case you want to purchase them at the on-site Liquor Mart.

The tasting area is likely to be quite crowded, especially around the most popular wines. Once your sample has been poured for you, and if you are not engaged in discussion with those pouring, let someone else in to try the wine. This will ease both potential congestion and irritability.

GO WITH YOUR PERSONAL PREFERENCES After all is said and done you are the only expert when it comes to pleasing your palate. The best way to learn more about your own likes and dislikes is to try different wines and trust your own judgement. The best thing about a wine show is that it presents an ideal opportunity to try as many different wines as possible in a relatively short time.

Arterra Wines

On July 31, 1975, Inniskillin Wines, founded by Karl J. Kaiser and Donald J.P. Ziraldo, was granted the first winery licence in Ontario since prohibition. In 1994, Inniskillin established an estate winery in the rich terroir of the Southern tip of the Okanagan Valley Wine Region in British Columbia. Commenced as a partnership between Inniskillin and the Inkameep indigenous peoples (Okanaqueen Tribe), the launch of Inniskillin Okanagan coincided with the 20th anniversary of Inniskillin’s first grape crush in Niagara. In both Niagara and the Okanagan, Inniskillin offers a full collection of fine VQA wines made by dedicated winemakers and viticulturists committed to their craft. +989368N +219543 +323444 +261099

History of the wine in Italy Italy’s modern prodigiousness with wine scarcely begins to tell the story of its people’s perennial links to the vine. The nature of the place—the influence of Mediterranean sunshine and mountain air currents on the hillsides of the elongated peninsula and islands—favors what seems to be an almost spontaneous culture of wine. This is one of the products that best represents the character, unity and genius of Italy. The bond between Italy and wine is something very ancient with vines being part of its stunning landscapes for thousand years. Every region has its own peculiar vines and wines, from the Alps to the Mediterranean regions. This climate variety permits to have a huge selection of different wines. The wine making flourished about 3,000 years ago thanks to the arrival of the Greeks in the southern area of Italy and from there it spread among every region. Then the Roman Empire prohibited viticulture outside of Italy and the export of wine to the provinces began and it has never stopped. 11

Market Italy is nowadays one of the most important wine producers in the world: 690,000 hectares of vineyards produce every year more than 50 million of litres of wine. These numbers have been constantly growing over the past few years, and so have all figures related to export of Italian wine all around the world. We can count in Italy more than 310,000 small farms (with an average size of less than 2 hectare each) and around 47,000 wine-making companies. The value of the wine market in Italy is estimated to have produced a revenue of 20 billion CAD$ in 2016. Canada is a major market for Italy, being the fifth largest market for Italian wine worldwide. Italy is in first place in 2017 for quantity of wine imported to Canada, with over 70 million liters, and in second after France for total value, with over 500 million worth of wine imported. In 2017, Manitoba imported 4 million Canadian dollars’ worth value of Italian wine.

12

Quality management Italy is well known all over the world for its wines that are appreciated everywhere. This entails big responsibilities. The label system, harmonized in the European Union, is truly strict in order to guarantee quality and the respect of link between the product and the territory. In particular the system is based on three main designations of origin that provide the consumers with information about the grapes, the production process and obviously about the territory of production. Regarding the wines you can find, the IGT, DOC or DOCG label that, in different measures, express the link between the product, the territory and the traditions. In 2016 there were 118 IGT, 332 DOC and 74 DOCG. Curiously, up to now, some of Italy’s finest wines have been referred to as vini da tavola, “table wines“, made by producers who by chance or by choice worked outside the DOC norms. Most such wines now fall into IGT categories, such as Toscano in Tuscany or Sicilia in Sicily. Those wines must be made from approved grape varieties in blends or alone, in which case the varietal may be mentioned on labels. 13

Indigenous vine varieties Lots of vines have been brought to Italy and crossbred with indigenous ones creating new varieties. However some indigenous vines are still present in purity , about 350, such as Barbera, one of the most harvested, mostly in Piemonte where the landscapes drawn by also this vines are considered World Heritage Site by Unesco. Some of the most famous indigenous vine varietals are: Barbera, Aglianico, Bonarda, Lambrusco, Moscato d’Asti.

A1 Albino Armani

REPRESENTED BY:

Alto Beverage Group

It all started way back on December 7th, 1607, when Domenico Armani signed notarized papers documenting the fact that his father Simone bequeathed the land to him, lands covered with “trees and grapevines”. It’s a collective history, and from that moment onwards it has adopted the name of a family. The nucleus of successful winegrowing always has to be a human being, with his or her exceptional effort to make grapes grow and turn them into wine. Out on the fields and in the wine cellar, you do what you have to do: in a natural way without taking shortcuts. The results are Albino Armani wines. +016054N +016056N +016057N +024611N

Altesino is a leader in various, important innovations in the production of Sangiovese from Montalcino, causing it to stand out and become a reference point for the entire territory. Some of the positive contributions putting Montalcino on the world map are: the introduction of the "Cru" (Montosoli) concept in 1975, the first experiments with barriques in '79, the production in '77 of the first Grappa from a winery and the first Futures (purchasing wine before its release) for Brunello 1985. Over the last forty years an intense relationship has been developed with the land full of history, it’s almost sensual beauty that is physically perceived and it’s subtle charm that reaches the body and soul. Belposto, the place you want to be. Let’s get one thing straight: Italians like to drink. When visiting Abruzzo be prepared to fall in love quickly and repeatedly. Stretching from the Adriatic to the Apennines, it’s a wild place, with beautiful vast mountain views across lush valleys and orange tiled villages that nestle into the soaring hills like mountain fortresses. botromagno.it & tenutaterraviva.it

REPRESENTED BY:

Alto Beverage Group

Botromagno: The history of our winery is intimately connected with a unique corner of the earth appropriately known, by those who visit us, as “The Other Puglia”. The area is marked by distinctive, gently rolling hills called murge – an expressive word meaning “rock”–; a cool, temperate climate; a mineral-rich subsoil; natural karst springs; woods, meadows, and pastureland, all of which make it a small paradise. Human settlements here stretch back over 1,200 years ago. The wines produced here were famous in the surrounding territories for their quality and for their freshness and fragrance, characteristics rather uncommon in Italy’s southern regions. Influenced by these factors, in 1991 the D’Agostino family decided to take advantage of their professional experience in other sectors by turning the venerable Cantina Sociale into a “modern winery with ancient roots.” Brothers Beniamino and Alberto, working together with a management team of viticulture and innovative winemaking technologies, have made Botromagno into a benchmark winery. Lui: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Lui is a classic, well-rounded, plum-scented red made from Montepulciano grapes grown in the Abruzzo region, on Italy's Adriatic coast. This wine is typically best consumed in its youth and with food. The deep purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. +386425N +281170N +512913N +030560N

In the 1920s, Domenico Bottega, a wine trader, was a passionate oenologist able to recognise the best grapes when still on the vine. Aldo Bottega shared his father’s passion and extended it also to grappa. He made a fruitful apprenticeship with the best master distillers in Conegliano and learnt the secrets of a fascinating job, then developed some innovative technical solutions among which the first single-variety grappa. In 1977 Aldo Bottega moved his distillery to Pianzano di Godega and gave it its final name: Distilleria Bottega. At the end of the ‘70s it was a small company operating on the local market of grappa. After the founder’s death, his son Sandro helped by his sister Barbara and his brother Stefano became the company’s president. World Wine Synergy Inc

On March 5, 1914, brothers Emidio, Isidoro and Antonio Santarelli signed the charter of the company “Berardino Santarelli & Figli”, named after the founding father, Berardino who was a Wine Merchant. Subsequently, Berardino’s three sons moved to Rome where they opened their first “Vini & Olii” – a wine and olive oil store – in the heart of the city. In time, as business prospered, they opened another eleven retail outlets in different parts of the city. In 1955 Emidio’s son Dino founded the company “Santarelli S.p.A.” to bottle Lazio’s classic wines. These were sold largely in Rome but were also exported abroad, particularly to Canada. In 1967 Dino Santarelli, fascinated by the Agro Pontino valley, founded Casale del Giglio at Le Ferriere, a hamlet close to the ancient city of Satricum in the province of Latina. This was virgin territory, quite unlike other parts of Lazio or any other Italian region and ripe for viticultural exploration. Since the early 1990s, Dino’s son Antonio, in keeping with his father’s intuition and in partnership with the young enologist Paolo Tiefenthaler, from the northern Italian Trentino region, has achieved remarkable results from an intense programme of research and experimentation. +024953N +024956N +024961N +024964N

The story of Cecchi Family is a simple one. In 1893, Luigi Cecchi, thanks to his wine-tasting talents, laid the foundations for the dynasty that is still known and appreciated today for the production of its high-quality wines. Luigi’s reputation is renowned internationally, so much so that during the ‘30s the family name began its unrelenting growth. In the ‘70s, the family moved to the municipality of Castellina in Chianti, a historical Chianti Classico production site where the productive process that would become the hallmark of constant quality began. Between the end of the ‘80s and the beginning of the ‘90s, the Family chose to expand into different territories: San Gimignano, where it produces the Vernaccia, and the Maremma, with its Morellino. Today, the Cecchi Family represents one of the prominent names both for the extension of its vineyards and for the quality of its wines. +024936N +024938N +004187 +024962N

In the 12th century Castello di Gabbiano was constructed in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, just south of Florence. The construction of the cellars, whose vaulted structure demonstrates their use for wine production, was begun in 1124. The story has long been told that the Gabbiano Knight, or Caveliere, protected the Castello di Gabbiano estate from outside invaders. On the label, the Cavaliere vividly symbolizes the robust charm and tradition of the Chianti region. Encompassing 139 hectares (343 acres), Castello di Gabbiano is split between two hills allowing for a wide variety of grape characteristics and wine styles. In terms of what’s planted, you’ll find 80% Sangiovese, 14% Merlot, 5% experimental vines, and 1% San Colombano and Malvasia. “Each hectare of vineyard is considered a block,” explains Federico Cerelli, the property’s winemaker. “Each has its own microclimate, sun exposure, soil and altitude, with the smallest differences making a big difference." +710323 +710324 +008292 +025040

Molino: The 'Azienda Molino di Sant'Antimo' comprises about 40 hectares of land facing south to south west from about 200250 metres above sea level down to the river Orcia. To one side Mount Amiata stands watch, when the 'maestrale' wind blows it brings the smell of the sea and the coast, to the other side the long ridge protects the land from the cold winds from the north and north east. The land is a mixture of clay, marl and crushed stone rich in minerals. Giacomo Vico: Our cellars date back to around 1890 when founder Giacomo Vico started producing and selling wine under his own name. Giacomo began making wines with grapes grown in the Roero and Langhe areas. Concentrating exclusively on quality rather than quantity, Giacomo was soon receiving awards including a “Gold Medal” at the International Food Fair held in Paris in 1909, and exporting as far afield as the United States and Argentina. Today, state-of-the-art technology is used alongside the wooden casks of old to produce the best quality wines at Giacomo Vico. I Pastini: The vineyards of "I Pàstini" fall into the heart of a geographically area of Puglia called Valle d'Itria between the towns of Locorotondo and Martina Franca. This area has always been suited to the production of white grape varieties of Verdeca, Bianco d'Alessano and Minutolo. The valley receives constant ventilation from the north mitigating the hot summer temperatures thus ensuring balanced daytime temperatures that produce excellent grapes. Villa I Cipressi: In 2000, Villa I Cipressi started producing Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino from grapes grown on three and a half hectares of Sangiovese vines in the territory of Montalcino. The vineyards are located both in the south part of the territory and in the north-west part, and are exposed toward the south which allow the vines to receive the best sunlight throughout the day. +130672N +232713N +470054N +592857N

The history of Pasqua Vigneti e Cantine begins in 1925, when the first generation came to Verona and established a new business devoted to the trade of wines from their homeland, Apulia. From wine trade and retail, they decided to become a real winery. With the acquisition of new vineyards in the Verona area, the company progressively gained importance and visibility. During the 1960s, the second generation of the family entered the business, bringing about an opening to export and an orientation toward quality. The opening of Cecilia Beretta in the 1980s, the agricultural estate and innovative research centre for vines, grafting techniques and vineyards, is the symbol of the family’s constant quest for excellence. In the mid 2000’s the company made a huge investment with the creation of new headquarters and manufacturing plant in San Felice, in the heart of the family vineyards. When the third generation started to lead the company they entered the international market with the foundation of Pasqua USA LLC in New York. The company now sells wines in 50 countries worldwide. +024627N +025612 +025613 +024649N

In 1998 the Pizzolo Family decided to restore an old vineyard of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo found on their property nestled in the valley surrounded by the mountains, not far from the town of Popoli. Careful observation of the environment where the vineyard is situated and their farming legacy filled with passion for agriculture encouraged the Pizzolo family to undertake an in-depth study of the origins of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. This research, conducted together with Professor Leonardo Valenti of the University of Milan, enabled the company to trace the oldest evidence of this grape variety in some uncontaminated mountainous zones near Valle Reale. The historic San Calisto vineyard cultivated in “Abruzzo arbours” dating back to 1960, became the company's first cru. After careful selection of the plants, the buds of mountain Montepulciano were collected and later grafted and used for new vineyards. This eventually gave rise to the agricultural and agronomic project of Valle Reale, which continues today thanks to a motivated group of like-minded people. +024675N +024679N +024680N +024682N

In 1877 when cousins ILario and Leopoldo Ruffino embraced their passion for winemaking by establishing a small winery in the town of Pontassieve near Florence, the region already had a centuries-old tradition of growing exceptional wine grapes. Tuscany is blessed with mineral-laden soils, the cooling influence of the Mediterranean Sea and the dry summers that wine grapes favour. Ruffino’s status was firmly established both nationally and internationally when its Chianti won a Gold Medal at the 1881 Milan Wine Exhibition, a prize at the 1884 Nice Exhibition, and a Gold Medal at the 1885 Antwerp Exhibition. The reputation of Ruffino wines continued to spread with the first Chianti exported to the United States. After the Second World War, Ruffino purchased the first of its Tuscan estates, the Villa di Montemasso in the Chianti Classico region. Ruffino continued to invest in new vineyards and became one of the first major wineries with vineyard estates in Italy’s three most renowned wine-producing regions – Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Ruffino has established itself as a leader in Chianti, renowned for consistency and quality. When Chianti first became recognized as a DOCG wine in 1984, Ruffino Chianti DOCG was awarded the first warranty strip #AAA00000001. Today, more than 140 years after its founding, Ruffino continues to express the history and heritage of Italy with every bottle of wine released. +192153 +388413 +589101 +025199N

In 1935 the large swathe of land between Fossalta di Portogruaro and the Venetian Lagoon was largely abandoned and needed reclaiming. Count Gaetano Marzotto realized its potential and decided to create a huge agricultural complex. Measuring a thousand hectares, this complex would meet the growing demand for food products and wines. The return to traditional cultivation of vines was the driving factor in constructing a huge vinification cellar that became “state of the art” for that time period. Also at that time consumers were looking for pleasant, less structured wines, with strong vineyard and territorial identities, which could be paired with a style of cooking that was becoming increasingly lighter and healthier. To satisfy that need Santa Margherita developed the Alto Adige & Pinot Grigio wines. +001146 +024671N +002125 +011244

San Felice is located in the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, a few kilometres from Siena, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Surrounding the tiny medieval hamlet and the winery complex are 140 hectares of vineyard, planted 85% with sangiovese, a testimony to the commitment of San Felice to the production of Chianti Classico with a manifest bond to its local terroir, as shown by its ‘Il Grigio’ Riserva, Gran Selezione and ‘Poggio Rosso’ Gran Selezione wines. San Felice has also won recognition as a very innovative producer and committed researcher. Eloquent examples are its historic wine Vigorello, the precursor to the Supertuscan wines, and Pugnitello, made from the ancient Tuscan grape of the same name, which San Felice re-discovered and experimented with over many years, in collaboration with the University of Florence. +024629N +024702N +024710N +024711N

The farm of Sordo Giovanni, now run by his son Giorgio, is situated a few kilometres from Alba at the foot of the Barolo hill, in the municipal district of Castiglione Falletto, in Cuneo province. The family business has been engaged in wine growing for over three generations. It was founded in the early 1900’s by the present owner’s grandfather Giuseppe, but the real turnaround came with his father Giovanni who, together with his wife Maria, acquired numerous vineyards in some of the finest areas of Barolo territory. The lands of these vineyards, made up of very deep and compact calcareous marl, are rich in micro elements providing an ideal environment for the cultivation of Nebbiolo, an extremely vigorous and demanding varietal which produces wines of great prestige, age-worthy and rich in fragrance. Today, the firm owns over 53 hectares of wine producing vines that are distributed in the municipal areas of Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour and Vezza d’Alba. The firm is equipped with modern plants for wine-making, storage and bottling. An impressive ageing cellar, fitted with over one hundred high capacity oak barrels, enables the wine to mature and develop perfectly. All production processes, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, can depend on the tried-and-tested traditional methods handed down to us by the Giovanni ancestors. +024650N +024651N +024666N +024672N
