SPITTING IS OK

This refers not only to making sure that you have alternate transportation available at the end of the evening, but also that you are not beginning your evening on an empty stomach. Though experts might say your senses are heightened when you are hungry, after a long day some food will help keep your energy level up and temper the effects of consuming alcohol. Remember, the Wine Festival focuses on the wines (pours are less than 1oz).

In fact spitting the wine after tasting is an essential part of the process for those who wish to maintain any objectivity during the course of the evening. Look for buckets or strategically placed receptacles into which, like the pros, you can spit the wine after swishing it around in your mouth. Learn from the winery representatives; each winery have experts behind their table. Feel free to ask questions or discuss your views about the wines that you taste.

Food is not available on the tasting floor, however, the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg operates a Bistro should you wish to enjoy some repast during the Festival.

PLAN YOUR ATTACK As you enter the show, pick up your tasting glass and program and take a few minutes to survey the room and organize your route. Given there will be a huge number of wines to sample and limited time, it is extremely useful to decide where you want to go first. It may be sparkling wines first and dessert wines at the end. Or perhaps specific grape varieties such as sauvignon blanc or shiraz might be the target before moving on to other things. Whatever the plan, note the wines you have tasted, particularly the ones you like in case you want to purchase them at the on-site Liquor Mart.

BE COURTEOUS TO OTHER TASTERS The tasting area is likely to be quite crowded, especially around the most popular wines. Once your sample has been poured for you, and if you are not engaged in discussion with those pouring, let someone else in to try the wine. This will ease both potential congestion and irritability.

GO WITH YOUR PERSONAL PREFERENCES After all is said and done you are the only expert when it comes to pleasing your palate. The best way to learn more about your own likes and dislikes is to try different wines and trust your own judgement. The best thing about a wine show is that it presents an ideal opportunity to try as many different wines as possible in a relatively short time.

The Okanagan Valley is BC’s premier grape growing region. An everchanging panorama, the Valley stretches over 250 kilometres across numerous sub-regions, each with different soil and climate conditions suited to a growing range of varietals. Cooler climate varieties like Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive in the North Okanagan, while the South Okanagan provides ideal conditions for ripening Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah/Shiraz. The Okanagan Valley is also home to British Columbia’s first subappellation, the Golden Mile Bench where 791 acres of vineyards are sited on an alluvial fan that was deposited during the last glacial episode. Although the modern winemaking industry is still young by world standards, the growth of the wine industry in British Columbia has been exponential over the past 26 years. In 1990 there were just 17 wineries in British Columbia; today, there are over 272 wineries, welcoming 800,000 winery visitors each year.

The winery proudly honours the name and spirit of one of the region’s most legendary pioneers, William Baillie-Grohman. Exploring the area in 1890, Baillie-Grohman had a vision that the area along the Creston Valley Flats could be converted into rich farmland. Like the Okanagan Valley, ground crops were first planted in the Creston Valley. The evolution of this rich agricultural area led to orchards and tree fruits, and today in select microclimates, vinifera grapes emerge. The idea for Haywire began when Christine Coletta and Steve Lornie planted a 10-acre vineyard in Summerland, named Switchback. It became obvious that they needed to craft their own wine and fully embrace the results of their hard work. Haywire, an old Canadianism that refers to wires used for baling hay that tended to be tough to handle and unpredictable, was an obvious name as it was an apt description of Christine and Steve’s journey into the wine industry. The learning curve was steep, but as the first wines hit the market (in 2010) it became apparent that the journey was the reward. Haywire started as a tiny offering made at a neighbouring winery. The experience of being wedged into a borrowed cellar, gave Christine and Steve the idea to build a custom crush facility that could help people enter the wine industry with less mishaps. Today, their venture includes Okanagan Crush Pad, a 40,000 case winery in Summerland, BC, a 312-acre organic farm and vineyard, and a shift to crafting natural wines exclusively from organic grapes. The conception of our winery began in the spring of 2003. After months of researching and debating alternatives, the decision was made to build Canada’s first strawbale winery in the Similkameen Valley. Poplar Grove Winery is located on the slopes of the Naramata Bench, a premier wine growing area just outside Penticton, British Columbia. One of the original five wineries on the Naramata Bench, Poplar Grove was founded in 1993. Tony Holler purchased Poplar Grove and became the winery president in 2007. Tony’s wife, Barbara Holler, owns and operates the Holler’s 100 acres of estate vineyards allowing Poplar Grove wines to be made from 100% estate grown grapes. Their 4 sons Chris, Andrew, Matthew and Eric manage the vineyards making sure that the grapes are cared for everyday rain or shine. Poplar Grove is focused on six core wines: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and a signature blend called The Legacy. The white wines are released the year following harvest to preserve the primary fruit flavours. The red wines spend a minimum of 18 months maturing in French Oak barrels and an additional 18 – 30 months developing in the bottle so that they are ready to be enjoyed upon release. Originally known as Pioneer Vineyards, the site was first planted to table grapes in 1927 by renowned, local horticulturist JW Hughes. The old vine plantings – 1978 Riesling and 1985 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay became the backbone of the vineyard. Other varietals were removed and new plantings of the 3 flagship varietals commenced in 2005. El Petit Bonhomme originates in southeast Spain where the growing season is long and hot and the conditions are considered extreme.
