ONBOARD is published by a dedicated team based in the South of France and London. With a strong background in publishing and marketing we entered the superyacht industry back in 2011. It’s been a busy, exciting and highly rewarding time for us all and we’ve forged some strong relationships throughout the industry based in the Mediterranean, Europe and further afield.
SUITS YOU Wetsuits for the surfer, swimmer or diver who wants to look and feel fabulous both in and out of the water
We’ve been lucky enough to work with some great journalists, company representatives, business owners and PR companies during the past five years and believe the publication has gone from strength to strength. We’ve listened to the crew and businesses and have delivered a relaxed and informative read. After five years of publishing ONBOARD Magazine, we decided to develop the brand and publish our first definitive Tenders and Toys guide.

I want one of them OVER THE PAST DECADE OR MORE, THE CHOICE OF TENDERS HAS GROWN EXPONENTIALLY WITH TECHNOLOGY ADVANCEMENTS IN MATERIALS, ENGINE OPTIONS AND AQUADYNAMICS. THIS HAS BASICALLY GIVEN THE TENDER DESIGNERS A BLANK SHEET OF PAPER. HOWEVER, WHEN AN OWNER IS LOOKING FOR A NEW TENDER THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THEY NEED TO CONSIDER SUCH AS WEIGHT, LENGTH, BEAM, GARAGE SIZE, PRIMARY USE AND PRACTICALITY FOR THE OWNER AND GUESTS. WE ASKED REGULAR ONBOARD SAGE, SALTY SEADOG, IF HE HAD A BLANK CHEQUEBOOK AND FEWER LIMITATIONS, WHAT WOULD BE HIS FAVOURITE LIMOUSINE, RIB, ALL ROUNDER AND SOLAS TENDER?
LIMOUSINE
S
alty’s favourite limo, is, he says, the Royal Denship tender. With naval architecture by Espen Øino it offered seating for 12 passengers riding in climate-controlled comfort. Large side and aft windows and a glass roof, which could be opened and raised to a height of 2 metres kept the interior wonderfully light. Royal Denship famously went bust in 2009. He has to concede that those made by Hodgdon in

the USA and Vikal in Australia are pretty darned good. He has got a soft spot for the British made Pascoes and Cockwells, which, he says are pretty well made. He also fancies owning customised Limos from the ranges made by Windy, Compass, Serenella, Yachtwerft Meyer, Vripack, and X-tenders. Looking at the list it seems Salty has a penchant for some of the best names in tender building.
ALL ROUNDER
W
e are almost scared to ask Salty to recommend a good all rounder because if he attributes those words with tenders he is bound to remember the days when Avon built a roll away folding boat that you had to inflate before you went ashore. So we ask him to choose just one tender without limitation. His eyes light up. “How about the Torpedo?” he asks. We see his point because the J Craft Torpedo from Sweden is built on seafaring principles
of passion and grace, marrying beautiful materials, exquisitely engineering details, distinctive design and discreet but very clever technology. Combined with exhilarating performance, this is the boat that elicits an emotional response, whether enjoying relaxation at anchor or scything through waves at 50 knots. This emotion is tangible; it can best be seen in the faces of those that experience it. At last Salty has a good idea when he says, “I want one of them!”

hen it comes to SOLAS approved tenders Salty’s eyes glaze over a bit. He has had enough of regulating the hell out of boats and swears they never perform well in a situation. Mealy mouthed bigot that he is, we ask him to suggest a few names of good ones. Zodiac Hurricane he says offers a wide variety of products for search and rescue applications and has been alongside SAR organisations from around the world for over 50 years. Customers appreciate the speed, seaworthiness, shock mitigation, low freeboard, stability and manoeuvrability of these boats when it comes to urgent and arduous rescue operations.
8 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD
hen it comes to choosing a rigid inflatable, Salty has a soft spot for the Scorpion built in Lymington. But we suspect that is because he has had plenty of opportunity of putting the scorpions to the test out on the waters of the Solent. He says the Williams jet driven boats are a bit cheeky when you want something small, nippy and highly manoeuvrable. Here again he adds in Pascoe and says that both Rib Eye and Rib X are good contenders for his Rib Award. The choice in RIBs is enormous and the new D-RIB which offer increased space inside but then also the rugged RIB characteristics for berthing and coming alongside vessels. On a final note Salty mentions the range from Whitmarsh with their twin four-stroke outboards giving top-speeds of 70 knots.

CUSTOM BUILT Josh Richardson explains the benefits of project management throughout your tender build process
S
uperyacht Tenders and Toys (SYTT) are involved in ordering and managing the build process of many production and custom tender builds, and are the industry leader in this field. Whether it is a 16m chase boat, a 10m limousine tender, a classic mahogany tender or a RIB the added value of having a specialist overseeing the build process and quality is a huge benefit to yachts. With the value often so high on custom tenders getting it right first time is very important. Whether purchasing just one or multiple custom tenders, using SYTT is a great way to ensure that all tenders exceed expectations and avoid any pitfalls during the build process. When a client buys a new tender through SYTT the company offers a full project management package overseeing the build at no extra cost. This consists of regular inspections and reporting on the build, management of contracts and change orders, sea trials, and then ongoing warranty point of contact and handling. All reporting, inspections and planning charts are kept on a live online interface. With a competitive sales price to start, the added value of the project management makes purchasing through SYTT a ‘no brainer’. On busy yachts having a single point of contact for warranty, spares and advice is invaluable, especially from the person who knows the most about the new build tender having carried out all of the build inspections. SYTT offer ongoing after sales support at no additional cost. When clients are already negotiating directly with the shipyard building their tenders, SYTT are often asked by owners and management companies to manage the builds on their behalf after the order is placed, or to assist when the order is being
placed. SYTT has full-time project managers in-house to oversee these projects and they can offer specification reviews, competitive alternative quotes and can advise on contract terms before ordering. Many tender builders don’t use contracts and build on a deposit basis. SYTT offer owners and builders reciprocal contracts ensuring that there is no ‘no man’s land’ where the builder and owner are not clear of their responsibilities. This assistance on contracts and specification reviews is vital to the smooth running of a build, avoiding potential issues further down the line. Examples of this are ensuring that the builder has adequate insurance, passes title of the goods at the appropriate time, and has clear stage payment targets. Once the tender is in build, SYTT visit regularly, prepare photographic reports and make sure that owners are kept updated throughout the build process and that the build stays on track to meet deadlines whilst still maintaining the high level of finish. Finally, where a build is nearing completion but has had no external project management, SYTT can offer a pre-completion tender survey and sea trial to ensure that the boat has been built to specification, to the quality of finish expected and meets all of the contractual parameters set. This is invaluable prior to shipping of the tender to ensure that any snagging items can be dealt with quickly in the yard rather than discovering these when your tender reaches its final destination and needs to be put into service. At any point in the build process, SYTT can provide invaluable assistance and added value to your tender build. EASY LIFTING Tony How looks at the flexible use of lightweight carbon davit cranes on board superyachts
O
ver the last twenty years the Atlas brand of carbon davits has become well known and trusted in the superyacht world. Manufactured by the world class team of shipwrights and boat builders at Jeremy Rogers Ltd, the Atlas range started out as a small side line to the UK business which is best known for building Contessa yachts. Today, demand for the sleek, elegant and practical carbon davit range has boomed. “We started the Atlas range back in the 90s because we could see there was a need for something that was not only strong and lightweight but would also compliment the beautiful lines of the superyacht” explains Kit Rogers, MD at Jeremy Rogers Ltd. “Today, davit building is an important part of our business; we supply superyachts, sailing boats, the MOD, Trinity House and a number of industrial customers and increasingly we make a range of custom carbon products to compliment the range including a new lifting beam and a passarelle,” he continues. The METS – DAME award winning Atlas davits have been tried and tested the world over on superyachts, docksides, leisure craft and military vessels. The complete range can be class approved to meet man-overboard, man-riding and rescue boat launching. With a safe working load (SWL) of 500kg the Atlas comes as standard with reaches of 1200, 1600, 2000, 2500 and 3000mm. Other lengths and an increase in SWL can be customised and the davits can be fully manual or electric (12v or 24v).
Easily deployed and stowed, multiple waterproof deck sockets can be fitted around the vessel and a single davit can then be used in a number of locations. For larger sailing yachts a paired davit system offers a solution for holding a tender in place on the falls, without adding too much weight to the stern of the boat. For those requiring even more portability, there is also a small lightweight (8kg) removable davit.
The Atlas Baby, which again comes in a variety of sizes; 900, 1200 and 1500mm. The Atlas Baby is suitable for lifting lighter loads up to 125kg or can be customised to a higher SWL. Atlas Technical Sales Manager Tony How says, “It’s great to be able to offer such a versatile, elegant and practical solution to customers – we urge you to get in touch with any lifting questions you have, we are always here to help.”

TENDER THOUGHTS WE ASKED A NUMBER OF INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS ABOUT THEIR FIRST AND CURRENT TENDERS AND THE IMPORTANT ELEMENTS WHEN BUYING A NEW TENDER
PINO DI MORA NICK POWELL
LAURENT BLIEKAST
New Build Manager
Captain M/Y HELIAD II
What has been your favourite tender during your career and why? It’s not the fanciest but we used to have a U.K. built Cobra 7m tender with a 250 Yamaha outboard and we modified it for guest use. It was and still is a great sea boat which easily accommodated 10 guests, kept them dry at 20 knots and then turned itself into a great ski and wake boat. If you could buy any tender today, what would it be? A Whitmarsh 11m with full options probably If you were building a custom tender, what would be the most important elements for you personally and technically? Guest comfort is always top of the list, arriving at the dock looking the same as one left the yacht is paramount these days. Good guest lighting, safe embarking and low noise levels plus a state of the art navigation system for safe night operations. Technically, just really good access to technical spaces within the tender to allow the crew to easily maintain it.
Senior Project Manager Hill Robinson
What is your current tender and why was it chosen? Our tender is a Castoldi 5,5m limo. Actually, she was onboard when I joined the vessel but I know the owner and the shipyard choose it to have the most multi-purpose tender for the charters and for our yacht of 33.5m she has lot of advantages. If you were buying a new tender, what would you choose? Hard to say but, for a charter yacht we are looking to have a multi-purpose tender with good reliability and dealer in the cruising area. I would say a jet tender is a good option, they are normally powerful enough for water sports and they make a nice wake, are comfortable, work with diesel and have less obstruction due to the jet system. So my choice would be a 9m Castoldi.
TONY MINNS Captain M/Y QUID PRO QUO What is your current tender and why was it chosen? Our current tender is an Extender which folds in half relatively easy. It was chosen as we have limited space for a tender on our 30 metre Benetti. Guests are happy with it, of course there is the folding side of it, but with
CLIVE GOLDING New large yacht constructions
What has been your favourite tender during your career? The tenders we used when I was a crewmember were generally standard or semi-production. Boston Whalers, RIBs such as Avon, NovaMarine and later Novurania with the odd Riva, SeaRay or Chris Craft thrown in for good measure, none of which
practice over all this works very well for the crew and yacht. Do you have a favourite tender? I can’t say I have a favourite brand. But I would generally go with semi-inflatables. I like them for their flexibility and variety of applications, overall quality and their value for money.
were particularly suited for the rigours of life as a yacht tender. The only custom tender maker I knew of in those days was Custom Tenders and although they certainly had some good designs they certainly had their share of problems. Do you have any current favourite tenders? For production tenders, the
What has been your favourite tender during your career and why? My favourite tender was a Cigarette 14m ‘chase tender’. I was taking care of the maintenance and minor repairs but also had the chance to drive it from time to time, it had incredible stability and terrific speed. If you could buy any tender today, what would it be? I really like the new toy carrier concept. They are excellent for water sports but also spacious enough to spend a relaxing day on out at sea. Outboard engines are much preferred to inboard + drive as they take less space, allow you to beach the tender in remote areas, and are easier to maintain and more reliable. If you were building a custom tender, what would be the most important elements technically? A tender needs to have comfortable and large seating areas, be easy to board specially for older people, good for watersports and also has a way to protect your guests from rapidly changing weather conditions. A medium size yacht from 40m to 60m, suffers from not having the space to accommodate tenders larger than 5/6m. Therefore I always recommend a small crew tender for watersports and general services but with the support of a more comfortable, elegant and safer chase tender to transport your guests.
ones that stand out in my experience are X-Craft and Pascoe. Both represent excellent value for money, a proven product and surprisingly high quality. For custom boats I‘m a fan of Compass Tenders. Their designs are from Allseas (Patrick Banfield), they have very seaworthy hulls, great looks, are beautifully made from
carbon fibre and complex composite mixes and use the latest wiring and electronics. They can tailor make each vessel to your specifications regarding design, dimensions, layout, propulsion etc. and have any number of features such as opening bows, folding biminis, extendable cranes, retractable swim platforms, dive ladders etc.

SOUNDS GOOD Paul Baker looks at the importance of installing high quality marine audio equipment in your tender
I
t is no great secret that listening to our favourite music makes us feel happier. When we listen to music, multiple areas of our brain are stimulated. By listening to the music that we enjoy the most, higher levels of dopamine are released which in turn makes us feel rewarded. When you listen to your favourite music with a cherished activity, it makes sense that the experience will be even better. There is no greater feeling of freedom and joy than being out on the water on a gloriously beautiful day, either cruising or travelling at speed in your favourite location. Add your favourite music into the mix and you have the perfect recipe for an unforgettable memory. But how do you make the music sound great when it is competing with engine noise, wind and wake?
areas of the boat. Unlike many standard source units that have been developed from marinised car stereos, the NMEA 2000® compatible MediaMaster 100s® has been designed and sized in harmony with other marine instruments on the helm so that its advanced features and ergonomic design complements the nav station of the most sophisticated and luxurious tenders.
The advent of high-tech marine audio on superyacht tenders has seen a significant rise in demand for specialist marine audio suppliers such as JL Audio Marine Europe who work alongside tender manufacturers such as Pascoe International, Wahoo, Cockwells, Cobra RIBs and Stingher RIBs to offer bespoke audio packages to suit their customers’ listening tastes. If a customer likes more bass heavy music then the system can be tuned accordingly to turn out more bass. If wakeboarding is your thing, the company can create a system for your tower and transom that projects the same clarity of sound as if you were listening onboard, even over all that wake and engine noise.
JL Audio’s speakers and sub woofers are available in a choice of designs and sizes, so systems can be tailored to enhance any tender regardless of size. If space is limited on the helm, JL Audio’s MBT-RX and MBT-CRX Bluetooth® controllers and receivers can be fitted in place of a full sized source unit.
A crucial component in JL Audio’s customised audio systems is the company’s new marine source unit, the MediaMaster 100s, which provides full integration and control with JL Audio’s speakers, subwoofers and amplifiers. The MediaMaster 100s offers eight channels of audiophile quality and four separate audio zones with independent control options so output can be adjusted in different
Their robust marine engineered construction means that JL Audio products are able to cope in the most exposed environments and no amount of splash or sunlight will affect their performance. Designed to last up to eight years in a marine environment, JL Audio speakers will continue to offer a crystal clear sound year after year. Whether kicking back and listening to some chilled tunes or waterskiing to some upbeat rock, make your soundtrack matter by fitting an audio system that will do it justice. DRIVING TENDERS Jules Richards, Technical Operations Manager at Bluewater Training and RYA Powerboat and PWC Trainer, looks at how crew can look after themselves, guests and fellow crew when operating yacht tenders and asks whether the current basic powerboat qualifications are adequate
D
riving yacht tenders between the anchorage and shore is an important part of deck crew responsibilities and one which is sometimes handled less well than it should be, particularly on smaller yachts. Training providers and crew agents often tell would-be crew that the RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification will help set them apart from other wannabes. This is true to a certain extent but is the PB2 qualification enough to allow someone with little experience to be ferrying owners, guests and fellow crewmembers around in a variety of conditions and often at night? The answer is no.
18 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD
Apart from anything else, the PB2 certificate is a daytime qualification; it does not allow the holder to drive at night as there is no night navigation element in the course. The two day PB2 course primarily concerns safety and does not demand a high degree of competency for the issue of the qualification. The RYA says the ability after completing the course is that of a self sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of his or her own limitations and those of the craft they are driving. The problem is not such an issue on larger yachts who are quite often requiring a Yachtmaster Offshore or equivalent qualification even for junior deck positions – this obviously negates the problems
of night work. Some large yacht tenders are very different from the RIBs that are the stock-in-trade of the average PB2 course. To combat some of these issues, the RYA, in conjunction with the Professional Yachting Association, introduced the Tender Operator Course. This two day course specifically works on smooth handling of the craft but also addresses day and night pilotage skills for short ship-shore trips. Particular emphasis on the course is also given to the safe carriage of passengers and the extra safety precautions that are necessary. Assumed knowledge to take this course is to PB2 Coastal level. This course is not a requirement and so initial take-up has been slow. Most yachts will have their own training practices in place and, regardless of qualifications held by individual crew, yachts will have their own practical vetting of tender drivers. It is a common, pre-season sight in yacht marinas the world over to see new crew being put through their paces in a variety of tenders before they are unleashed to carry guests unsupervised. The burden of ensuring safety and competence of tender drivers falls firmly on the shoulders of the officers onboard the yacht. That burden should be acquitted through onboard training and assessment to ensure that crew adhere to standing orders/ procedures and that they have the required knowledge and skill to operate the tender. One of the key things many of the captains to whom I have spoken about this tell me they require from crew above all else is good seamanship. At sea, unless conditions are exceptionally calm, the best way to get from A-B is not generally a straight line. Course and speed must be adjusted for the most comfortable ride. Having been ferried to and from many yachts for onboard training, I can say from experience this is something which is often neglected. Assessment of conditions on arrival at the yacht/dock is vitally important so that the manoeuvre can be properly planned. If things start going wrong for whatever reason, abort the manoeuvre, back off and rethink. This is not as easy as it sounds when onboard there are impatient guests in a hurry to get to their restaurant ashore. However, they would probably prefer being a little behind time than having an accident.
Crew should be fully conversant with the craft they are operating and have knowledge of and understand all the controls, switches, circuit-breakers and fuel/oil/water fill points. Location, extent and operation of the safety and firefighting equipment and first aid kits should all be second nature for the competent operator. Being in command of a yacht tender obviously entails all the above safety-orientated matters but also much more. There’s the hospitality management side of dealing with guests as well. Most yachts will have procedures and checklists in place to ensure the tender is seaworthy before it leaves the yacht. These will cover all safety issues but will also cover the aspects of comfort. As one captain said: “It would be nothing short of a catastrophe if, after the tender left the yacht and the guests wanted a glass of wine, it was discovered that the corkscrew was not onboard!” Most of the near misses and unfortunate incidents which were not misses involving tender operation tend to stem from trying to do things too quickly. There can be a lot of pressure on crew. Guests don’t like waiting but it doesn’t kill them – operating a tender too fast could; slow down, think, identify the risks and carry out the manoeuvre properly. Time will probably be saved as the manoeuvre will be completed first time and without drama which is after all what the aim should be. To end, something which is a particular hobbyhorse of mine: the kill cord. The yachting industry is getting better but I am still amazed by the number of yacht crew who seem to be allergic to this essential piece of safety equipment. Surely there have been enough serious accidents for everyone to realise the importance of this oft forgotten piece of kit. It’s there for a reason; use it.
ESSENTIAL NIGHT TENDER OPS • Greater vigilance, there could be a lot of other people out there like you • Reduce speed – what was a safe speed during the day will not be at night • Know the area – check charts, do runs during the light hours to become familiar with potential hazards • If appropriate, check tides
Another important point for the tender driver to appreciate fully is that the safety of all onboard is his/her direct responsibility, they are quite literally in command with all that this entails. “Driving the tender is not just a jolly away from the yacht. They are in command and their decisions and actions matter,” one experienced captain told me. There could be local regulations which obviously must be adhered to. Non respect of the 10-knot limit between Cannes and the Islands, and the 5-knot limit between the Islands themselves, have seen many crew being fined and give the authorities the chance to get onto the yacht if the tender is not carrying full paperwork. There is provision, certainly in France, for a prison sentence of up to six months and/or a fine of €3750 depending on the severity of the offence, particularly for speeding within the 300m from shore, five knot restricted zone. Good communication with passengers by crew operating tenders is very important. Are they comfortable, are they seated correctly, do they require life-jackets? Passengers should also be advised of any serious change in course or speed.
• Know the layout of the entrance and interior of the port or marina • Before leaving, check your navigation lights are functioning correctly • Sounds silly but learn to recognise your own yacht at night – people have been caught out in busy anchorages • Communication – make sure the VHF radio is checked prior to departure • Be aware of the swell and possible wash from other vessels. In dark conditions it is impossible to correctly assess the sea condition which dictate a lower than normal speed. Make sure all crews and guests are securely seated • Bridge observation. If possible, the tender’s progress should be followed from the bridge and if necessary complimentary advice can be given

Storage Solutions
Josh Richardson looks at the multi-purpose use of tender garages and the important design considerations
A
lmost every superyacht carries a tender of some sort, and the way and location in which they are carried greatly varies. Pressures on space are always at a premium and the attention this area receives by designers and shipyards differs when given the brief by the client and a list of priorities. As we so often hear from manufacturers and see first hand, tenders are often shoe-horned into small spaces. Increasingly the tender garage is becoming a more thought about area and is being used for multi-purpose activities, able to be transformed into games decks, beach clubs, gyms, party areas, indoor gardens and cinemas to name but a few. The tender garage on the modern yacht now needs to be clean, tidy, organised and finished to a high level suitable for guests, often laid with teak decking, removable chocks, recessed cranes, ambient lighting etc. Tenders are increasingly not stored on deck and are hidden within the vessel further complicating the need for space. EARLY PLANNING The size of the tender garage should be dictated by the owners wishes for the experience he wants from a tender. The tender should not be a last thought, as it is vital to the smooth operation of the ship. We all know the first and the last thing the owner and guests use during their experience onboard is the tender. Getting off dripping wet ready to get into the limo to go to the airport is an experience to avoid… Typically, owners want a tender (or multiple tenders) which can transport them ashore dry, safe, often quickly also offering a range of watersports. Depending upon the size of yacht the tender compliment 20 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD
will vary, with many large yachts having multiple boats for multiple tasks such as a Mastercraft for watersports, an enclosed limousine tender for transfers ashore, and an open tender for day trips plus some more specialist craft. On the 100 plus metre yachts these are carrying as many as 6-10 boats all suited to the purpose intended. Superyacht tenders are so often compromised by trying to be everything, then ending up being not ideal for any activity and where possible it is better to have boats suited to purpose, space and budget. The 106m explorer MY Ulysses is a good example of this having vast deck areas, a 21m carbon catamaran tender stored on the bow and a wide array of amphibious craft, RIBs, enclosed craft, rescue boats and landing craft. Given the owner’s brief the tender garage should be sized accordingly and box dimensions known so that tenders can either be purchased off the shelf to fit, or custom built as required. On production builds like Princess, Sunseeker etc. these are often designed specifically around a type of craft such as a Williams tender, Pascoe or Castoldi. Due to the garages being very specific to that tender often there are not many, or even any alternatives taking any choice or owners’ preferences out of the equation. One of the biggest challenges on these smaller superyachts is getting the head room, and tenders are often required to be less than 1.2m from keel to highest point, normally being the top of the console. The issue with this being that due to the boat having a shallow chine and low bow these boats can be wetter than if there was more height in the garage available to create a deeper hull.
TYPES OF TENDER GARAGES & DOCKING SYSTEMS FLOAT IN DOCK There are some terrific tender garages in existence, and the float in float out docks as seen on J’Ade, Octopus, IDynasty, Pegasus, Serene and others grabs the headlines with beautiful tenders shown in pride of place floating in the garage. The owner experience of boarding or disembarking in a tender dock is one of the nicest as it is private and the boat is stable and out of the waves, compared to it being used on the transom or a side entrance. Be warned however, we have seen many difficulties with boats getting damaged going into these docks in poor weather so appropriate fendering on the boat and in the dock itself is required. ROLLER LAUNCHING SYSTEM As successfully used on many Heesen Yachts and others a roller system is deployed over the transom and the tender rides onto this and powers up into the garage assisted by a winch. Great for being used whilst the vessel is underway this is a neat way to ensure the tender can be launched and recovered quickly without the use of a crane and no concerns about crew staying in the tender on high lifts. SIDE GARAGES WITH DAVITS More often the most popular type with either the tender garage being on water level or higher up on the bow. Twin davit cranes are normally used. Swell down the side of the vessel needs to be considered.

A recent 74m outfitted had 96 wetsuits for example! Having these all on rails, dry and easily accessed by guests is no easy task. Drying rails should not be overlooked STORAGE Whilst tender manufacturers complain about storage spaces and low crane capacities for tender handling, deckhands and officers complain about the yacht toy and equipment storage, and both are more than often correct. Increasingly we are getting involved in advising on storage of yacht toys as the range and amount of equipment is pushed. With owners trying to pack in as many items as possible making this neat, organised and importantly having items available for maintenance takes some consideration. We find that if toys are hard to deploy, recover and store these do not get used. The negativity soon gets passed to owners and they stop asking for large inflatables. Getting this right from the beginning makes a huge difference. There is increasing thought from owners’ teams on this and employing specialists to provide drawings, weights and dimensions of equipment to help make choices on what is purchased makes a large difference. GARAGE OUTFITTING FOR TOYS There is no getting away from the rise of electric powered toys, whether this be a stand up Jetski like the FFF, an electric surfboard like the Lampuga, or the well-known Seabob amongst others. Often these are required to be permanently or regularly charged and the 22 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD
racking of equipment, with charging is required. This needs to be considered as soon as possible in the build to avoid extension leads. Storage of watersports equipment is a large consideration, as buoyancy aids, impact vests, wetsuits and Scuba kit takes up a large amount of space. With yachts trying to cater for every guest the amount of equipment carried can sometimes be vast. A recent 74m outfitted had 96 wetsuits for example! Having these all on rails, dry and easily accessed by guests is no easy task. Drying rails should not be overlooked. Whilst everyone wants more space, without question a well-planned garage can make the enjoyment of owners and the life of crew easier and more productive. Clever racking of equipment in advance of a new yacht launch means that equipment is used more, and crew are more positive with owners, in turn increasing the enjoyment of using it. Whilst bigger and better is often the brief from owners, there is a fine line to create the right package and a challenging tightrope to walk. For all owners, management companies and representatives the assistance of a specialist company like Superyacht Tenders and Toys who know the products, and the builds makes a significant positive contribution and should always be considered.

RAFNAR LEIFTUR 1100 CABIN RIB SERIES A Radical New Ride in RIB-craft. Iceland’s OK Hull and Keel Technology brings a new comfort and stability to RIB and Tender rides. Their range displays the same unique comfort and performance at sea in moderate and even rough conditions and achieving high speeds of 40 or more knots while remaining firmly and solidly in the water in a comfortable and stable aspect. Unlike traditional planing boats, the Rafnar craft perform in ‘displacement-type mode’. They do not attempt to power over the ‘hump’ of their displaced bow-wave to ride and slam on the unstable ‘planing’ surface on top of the water. Tel: +34 659 011 071 www.rafnar.com

JUST ADD WATER AN EXTENSIVE TOYS MENU ON BOARD CHARTER YACHTS MAKES FOR HAPPIER PAYING GUESTS. FRANCES AND MICHAEL HOWORTH LOOK AT WHAT’S NEW, WHAT’S GREAT AND WHAT’S ESSENTIAL TO STOCK
W
ater toys on board yachts have, in the past, played an important role in chartering. But is that still the case and are toys still important when it comes to chartering? Does an extensive toys menu on board charter yachts make for happier paying guests or are they just extra hassle for an already overworked crew? The Retail Charter Broker Jacqui Lockhart who works from the Monaco offices of Camper & Nicholsons’ believes they still are to a certain extent. She says, “In the 40m plus charter yacht market, it is now common practice to have a good selection of toys to meet different requirements for all ages and for the more energetic or not.” She adds, “There is a current trend for Stand Up Paddleboards and Seabobs particularly for family charters. The selection of toys does not make a huge difference in a client’s yacht selection as if there is a toy they would like which is not already on board, every effort is made to ensure

44 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD
it is during their charter.” Jacqui sites the vast array of toys on the 58m Benetti Illusion V as one of the best examples of what a good yacht should carry. Once at anchor the crew of this busy yacht set to rigging the inflatable jetski dock to makes getting on and off the yachts two Seadoo Jetskis accessible and hassle free. With its own side-boarding ladder, it makes a great swim platform too. That same platform can be used for the yachts Jetovator and Flyboard, water sports accessories that extend the ability of the personal water craft. Then they begin to build the water slide which drops the guests six metres down into the ocean from the port side of the Bridge Deck.
BEFORE THE SEASON BEGINS PRACTISE DEPLOYING ALL THE TOYS USING THE TIME TO FIND QUICK AND SAFE WAYS
After that it’s time to deploy the Aquaglide Airport Lounge and Splashmat platforms that are floating platforms from which guests can swim play and relax. The yacht can also produce towables on which guests can Slalom, jump and veer through the tenders wake on such devices as the Slalom Solo, the classic American tube dubbed Air Force Flyer, the Wet ‘n’ Wild Flyer and the Chariot Warbirds 3. Other diversions in the yachts impressive toy box include wakeboards surf boards skis, skimmers, stand up paddle boards and seabobs. So are toys an essential element to the successful charter? The fact is,” One Captain told us, “That toys are seldom used as much as is thought. Guests can get bored with them very easily. What generally happens is that at the beginning of a week long charter crew are deploying all the toys everyday, by the end of the week the guests are telling them they only want to use this one or that.” Chris Andreason says, “There are guests who in the sixties are more interested in going ashore in the limousine tender than hurtling around the yacht on marinised motorbikes then there are families where Mum and Dad are just so glad the crew have put the water slide out for use.”
SEAWOLF Submersible vehicle for carrying HD sports cameras €935 www.ttrobotix.com
Captains we spoke to are of the opinion that when it comes to toys on charter yachts anything small and easily deployable is good. Toys that need several crew working together to deploy are less favoured but the biggest waste of time and money are the water slides and climbing walls. They take many man hours to inflate and safely deploy and just as long to deflate and stow. Generally they get used for about 20 minutes after they have been rigged and from that moment on, they are stuck to the side of the yacht like big useless dirigibles that can turn into a service liability. If the wind gets up they can get damaged but worse than that, they then become difficult to deflate and stow. Consider then what happens if that wind gets up quickly to the point that you have to

weigh anchor and move the yacht for safety reasons having huge inflatable appendages that are occupying the attention of deck crew means the Captain has fewer assets when it comes to re anchoring. Salesmen sell them to yachts as added charter assets but the fact is they are added liabilities. Captain Andreason believes, “It is vital that before the season begins you practise deploying all the toys using the time to find quick safe ways to do so. Never scrimp on servicing mechanical water toys and ensure they are fully useable before every charter. Having a jet ski on board that is not working is far far worse than not having one at all. Guests simply are unwilling to understand that they are not allowed to use it. Another Captain told us: “Always try and get guests to sign waiver forms. If they are reluctant to do so, gather as many of them together and surround yourself with extra crew as witnesses and give the safety briefing to everyone at the same time. Ask them if they have understood and feel capable of using the equipment pointing out that waiver forms exist but are unsigned. Later if it becomes necessary the fact that you have done so in front of several witnesses could make the difference.

Another captain told us that it is important that the correct procedures for deploying and using toys is followed at all times. He then added, “It is important that procedures are written down and that if it is found that they are wrong then the wording needs to be changed and approved.” It is a fact of life that guests will say they understand a safety briefing and before they set out on a jet ski will promise to stay close to the yacht and remain in sight. What happens next is they get astride the machine and head towards the horizon at high speed each taking a ever diverging course. It is important to make sure you have enough crew on duty to attend to the situation and you need to remember that there is a fine line between keeping a watchful eye on guest safety and invading their privacy. A highly experienced charter yacht Captain told us, “Sometimes it is difficult to service all the needs of a guest. Often you need crew in tenders watching over guests on water toys at the same time as you need two hands manning the swim platform to manage the coming and going. It is at these busy times that the lead charter guest announces that he and his girlfriend want to go shopping ashore. Finding yourself short of deployable crew at busy times can be dangerous.” Josh Richardson of Super Yacht Tenders and Toys sells, designs, manages, supports and trains tender and toy packages for superyachts. His company has “In terms of units sold Seabobs, Sea Pools and Yacht Slides

The 37 metre Heesen Aurelia is clearly one of the busiest yachts chartering in the Mediterranean. With a yacht slide, jet-ski, inflatable sailing dinghy, stand up paddle boards, Seabobs, kayaks and more she is one yacht happy with the services supplied by Super Yacht Tenders and Toys. Larger yachts supplied by the company include Maryah which has a 12m yacht slide, a 10m climbing wall and at 15 x 7m the worlds largest Blob! Other satisfied clients include the owners of La Familia, Saint David, Big Fish, Amaryllis, Escape II, Capri and Titania. Ask Flavien Neyertz of Luxurywatertoys Monaco what is the best seller in the range of water toys he sells and he will tell you, “We don’t have any particular product as best seller, and that is probably because our products are selected as packages. We are constantly introducing innovative products to that range but only after testing and using them ourselves. That is why it is a little early at this stage to announce the new products but for sure next year will be really special.” Neyertz believes that superyacht guests and owners are looking for new feeling and experience and therefore it is his job to constantly seek out an experience or new product to present to them. He says, “Watertoys are a must have onboard charter yachts, but on a privately operated vessel the choice of watertoys really depends on the owner’s personality and that can make our job very interesting.” He believes, “Any type of entertainment onboard a yacht is beneficial for the guests, but he is quite sure that foremost in any list, watertoys are a bigger part of a superyacht entertainment package.” He adds, “We do more than just sell the product. We always offer crew training, we are not only selling the products but offering a complete package with all tutorial needed for crew and guests to optimise the final user experience.”

Clay and Nina Builder were working together as crew on board superyachts when they saw an opportunity to design build and sell floating platforms to superyacht owners for recreational use. They see them more as tools than water toys but do concede they probably come under the same category when the yachts budget is being considered. They believe their modular system, “Was created as a place to store the toys at water level.” Clay builder suggests, “Toys are all about having enough stowage and also the time it takes to set up, launch and retrieve. Toys do make entertaining charter guests a lot easier especially if there are lots of children on board. I used to spend 4-6 hours a day as a mate, towing kids around on large inflatables.”

Guests never got board of it. The parents liked what we were doing as the kids were happy, away making noise elsewhere and totally shattered at the end of the day.” It was this experience that guided Clay and his wife Nina to develop Nautibouy Marine. They say, “Our products enhance the way a superyacht works. They not only extend the yacht they protect the yacht too. This means a beach club is open to all without a costly refit. Our modules create large extra areas for relaxation they protect the yacht from the toys and toys from the yacht. This means guests have easier access to the toys and to the water.” The products on offer from the company mean that crew can offer better hospitality at water level. They also facilitate tender free wash downs allowing the tender to be used for what it is meant to be used for namely transporting the guests not cleaning the hull. Richard Ems of Point of Sport in Germany has a different approach when it comes to marketing new Watersport and Funsport products that are launched onto the market each year. He says, “We sell to yacht suppliers not so much directly to yachts.” Nautique ski boats in the UK do sell directly to superyachts and even modify their boats to fit a Captains specific requirements Jo Birch at Midlands Nautique told ONBOARD, “We believe that when our boats introduced to those that who are at first sceptical the benefits become clear, we do not feel yachts do not want toys as such its more a case of seeing what benefits having them on boar would bring.” Sabrina Hanneman of Scubajet is in no doubt as to what is the best seller in her range.“It’s definitely the Scubajet in combination with the dive adapter.” She adds, “Scubajet only weights 3 kg and is the smallest dive scooter on the market. It’s the lightweight alternative to conventional dive scooters which are often up to ten times heavier and bulky.” The company is constantly working on new adapters and accessories because, “Superyachts are always looking for the next big thing” or something that’s extraordinary and very new on the market. Our water jet propulsion system is very versatile it can be used to convert a stand up paddle board to power, as a snorkeling assist or even on a dinghy, canoe or kayak to get back to shore.

In the last 20 years BIC Sport has diversified into the manufacture of surf boards, kayaks, sailing dinghies for children, and has most recently focussed its knowledge and experience on launching an extensive range of Stand Up Paddle boards. This latest brand new board sport is largely based on the principles of simplicity and accessibility that have underpinned the company’s enduring success and growing market within the superyacht industry.
TOYS ARE ALL ABOUT HAVING ENOUGH STOWAGE AND ALSO THE TIME IT TAKES TO LAUNCH AND RETRIEVE
Representing the company, Benoit Tréguilly says, “Our stand up paddle board SUP currently tops our best selling sports category. It is a relatively new sport but it is one that offers a full body work out, great visibility on the water because you are standing up, and is closely linked to the surf lifestyle and sensations. He tells us, “We are actively developing our product ranges to meet both market demand and current trends.” He adds, “Toys are ideal for those active clients who want to explore their anchorages more closely or do a bit of sport either in the morning or evening. Particularly the SUP is an ideal activity because it mixes exploring and exercise. We say that it is like doing sport without realising it, as you having so much fun paddling and exploring that you often forget that you are also getting a good work out. All of the watersport products produced by BIC are particularly easy to store on a super yacht. Tréguilly says, “Our range of inflatable SUP Boards or Kayaks can fit in the trunk of a small car, and take just a matter of minutes to inflate by the crew. As a result they are easy to use, and greatly increase the appeal of different anchorages as you can go into small creeks, lagoons or waterways where there is not enough depth for a super yacht, and even use our products as a snorkeling platform to explore under the water. Again, it is great exercise at the same time. There was a time when, what made one charter yacht stand out from another, was the number of water toys she carried for guest use. Back in the 1990s the 52 metre Nadine was owned by the now infamous Jordan Belfort better known as The Wolf of Wall Street. He was a man known for enjoying life and excesses that only vast amounts of disposable cash can acquire. Seeking to put his yacht into charter he equipped her with every imaginable water toy and advertised the fact in many magazines using the phrase “He who plays with the most toys wins.” At times she carried a seaplane, a helicopter, a 10 metre Intrepid tender, a pair of jet-powered tenders, several wave runners, a rope swing, a water slide, a diving board, kayaks, a dive shop and underwater cameras. This proved irresistible

to those chasing a yacht to charter yacht and she was seldom idle. If any yacht created the desire for water toys on charter yachts it was Nadine. Stephen Philp Chief Executive Officer at Freestyle Slides the company that created the worlds first inflatable yacht slide back in 2008 told us, “The concept took off and has kept on growing ever since. We are constantly hearing that in many cases the only way the broker can get the charter sold is if the vessel has one of our slides on it. We’ve had yachts buy our slide just to fill the needs of one charter. He continues, “As a result of the success of our slides there has been an increased demand for new toys which has led us to develop an entire range of new toys such as sea pools, climbing walls, jet ski docks, inflatable rails and flyers.
WE ARE CONSTANTLY BEING ASKED BY CAPTAINS TO PUSH BOUNDARIES IN CREATIVITY AND ENGINEERING DESIGN
The list goes on and keeps growing because as we get more product out there, the saying so aptly quoted by Nadine all those years ago, “He who plays with the most toys wins”, keeps our industry growing. Tom Addoms, the Director of Sales and Marketing at Freestyle Slides has no doubt what the best seller is in the range of products his company sells “Without question,” he says, “the Cruiser slides are our most popular. The jet ski, Seabob, tender docking systems are the second most popular then it is the pools.” We ask why do some yachts want toys while others do not? Addoms replies, “We find that every yacht has its own culture with vastly different values, designs and crew. While we find most want to enhance the excitement of yachting some are simply private or have different values. But do superyachts crave toys or do

you have to sell them? We ask. Addoms smiles at the question. “Crave is a good word and spot on. However like all companies we work hard to position Freestyle Slides with the brand they can trust for the highest quality, advanced engineering and support available world wide. We are constantly being asked by Captains to push boundaries in creativity and engineering design. We work with most builders during the development process and find the evolution of yacht design is more and more often fitted for the toys, storage, deployment and retraction.” “Every yacht that we have outfitted has been a case study for us. Over 90% of our products are custom designed so we have to work very closely with our clients. We are proud to be pioneers in this industry having created many firsts in regards to yacht toys and other inflatable yacht products. In light of this we are constantly evolving our designs, our set up and takedown protocols, our storage concerns and ultimately the user friendly experience combined with the fun factor.” “Our case studies show that the more products that can be converted to inflatable technology the more practical the overall yachting experience becomes. We have learned how not only to provide maximum enjoyment for our clients but also how to make life easier for the crew. From toys, to docking solutions and pools inflatables have helped revolutionise the way yachts operate. Our crew training programme begins with teaching with the initial consultation as our engineering design team carefully examines the yacht, storage, deployment and retraction options along pairing the specific toys and kit for best performance. After the gear is onboard we work hard to stay in contact and provide world class support as long as they own the toys.” The reasons almost every charter guest gives for choosing one boat over another vary. For some it is the contents of the toy menu for others it is the menu concocted by the chef. Liz Howard, Charter Broker, with Fraser Yachts believes, “Both culinary and water sport activities are paramount to the ultimate charter experience. For example, with the more laid back or senior charter guest, fine wine and a fantastic culinary experience will take priority. For younger guests and families, toys take precedence along with a crew who can teach them how to get the most enjoyment out of them!”
HOBIE CAT Kayaking has never been so easy www.hobiecat.com
While toys are of course important it has to be remembered that they are only as part of the charter package. The success of any charter is of course a mix of a stunning superyacht, a great crew, a fabulous chef and a good helping of the favourable Mediterranean weather! However remember no matter if it’s the crew, the boss, his friends or paying charter guests, it’s your job as crew to make sure all safety policies are followed to the letter.

Europe offers an abundance of absolutely amazing seascapes. The underwater beauty found across the Mediterranean gives the dive enthusiast a great variety of top dive locations
Ustica ITALY Ustica is a small island, about 9km across linked to the mainland by a ferry service from Palermo. The island has been a Marine Reserve since 1986 which shows in the number and size of fish you will see. One of the best dive locations in the Mediterranean, divers are attracted by the relatively deep dives which are a feature of the island’s volcanic geology. One of the popular wrecks you can find here is the 74 metre ship which sank in 2005 now resting at approximately 20 metres. Diving in the waters of Secca Della Colombara is really amazing with July and August being the best months. www.misterjump.it

moving vessels. What could be better than skimming over the surface of the water at extremely high speeds? What could be more thrilling than harnessing the power of nature to glide you along? Kite surfing is one sport that permits you to enjoy these activities and much more anywhere in the world as long as you have access to a large stretch of water and sufficient wind. Though this sport can also be enjoyed in its milder version, the acrobatics that one often sees experts of this sport performing can only be done with power kite surfing. The major difference between the normal and the power version of this sport lies in the size of the kite and their type. The kites that are used in power kite surfing are huge in size and have a considerable pulling capacity. They have sufficient capacity to even lift people in the air and this is precisely what connoisseurs of the sports want. However, those who have never ventured into this sport are strongly recommended to take proper training. Though this sport is relatively safe for those who have spent time learning it correctly kite surfing can also prove dangerous for those who do not possess knowledge of this sport. Most people can get a hang of this sport in about 6 hours, though there are some people who might take longer. It is recommended that one start of with small foil kites and

Once you have picked up the basics of the sport, then you can advance at your own speed. Just search the net and you will be flooded with sites that provide you with different varieties of kites in different shapes and colours. There are specialty kites that have an option built in that permit you to stop the pull of the kite instantly. As a beginner, you are recommended to opt in for it so that you can stop the pull of the kite if you ever feel uncomfortable or are not able to control yourself in higher winds.

Riva Aquarama Riva yachts have always been a synonym for elegance and luxury. Since the 50s a long line of celebrities have enjoyed that certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ brought by owning and cruising in a Riva. From Brigit Bardot, Anita Ekberg, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton the Shah of Persia, Sophia Loren, Sean Connery and latterly George Clooney, Rivas have always had a close affiliation with unadulterated style and attention to detail. 66 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD
One of the most iconic yachts within the range was the Aquarama produced from 1962 until 1996. The most famous of Carlo Riva’s designs, the Aquarama has become a nautical legend over the decades. All versions were twin engined varying from 185 hp to 400 hp and with top speeds of up to 50 knots. Throughout the 34 years of production there were four separate models with only a total of 768 yachts being built.
