STEERING COMMIT TEE MESSAGE Dear Colleagues,

The MSDF priority area “A Healthy Caribbean” focuses on strengthening the ability of the state to provide universal access to equitable, quality services, and healthy nutrition and to harness the knowledge needed for prevention of disease, including non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the major causes of illness and death in the region. It demands action on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and HIV/ AIDS and related stigma and discrimination and to promote sustainable agricultural production for improved health outcomes.

This month’s bulletin reflects the work of the United Nations system in the Caribbean as agencies and partners give a concerted effort to achieving a healthy Caribbean. Accomplishing this goal means striving towards a Caribbean that is focused on ending the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases. This includes implementing laws, policies and systems to support healthy lifestyles among all segments of the population.

From strengthening pharmacovigilance of medicines to focusing on improving health care services, the UN in the Caribbean has made significant strides in building a healthier region. Plans, strategies and resources have also been developed and allocated to ensure that this goal is not only achieved but that no one is left behind in the process.

Thank you.

This workshop is special as it is one of the first times that CARICOM member states have gathered specifically to talk about substandard and falsified medicines and pharmacovigilance. It highlights the growing importance the region is placing on regulatory issues, and approaches to regulatory strengthening. It is meant to begin a dialogue around strategies and approaches to strengthen our national and collective response to these challenges. The UN in Guyana and other experts will share experiences and best practices from working with countries around the world on these issues. Strong medicines monitoring systems do not necessarily need to cost a lot of money. Click here to read more. ONE CARIBBEAN 2030 Monthly Bulletin | Issue #22 A Healthy Caribbean

UN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO PARTNERS WITH LOCAL MENTAL HEALTH NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION The UN system in the Caribbean has been making significant strides over the years to address the issue of mental health in the region. While there have been numerous programmes and strategies developed to aid in combatting this issue, there are still countries in the Caribbean that need more assistance in meeting the mental health needs of their population. The UN in Trinidad and Tobago has been working with partners to assist the country in building its understanding of mental health and creating safe spaces where mental health information and services are readily available to the public. To further achieve this, the UN system in Trinidad and Tobago has partnered with the MindWise Project, a registered non-profit organization.

And the award goes to...

UN Project wins National Energy Globe Award Grenada 2018 Prior to the implementation of the Protein from Waste plant, Grenada was plagued with several major environmental, economic and social challenges. The indiscriminate dumping of hazardous waste oil which was fouling land, water and coastal resources while decomposition of organic waste led to the increase in air pollution by methane gas. The solution is to convert organic waste such as animal, fish and brewery waste into high grade protein feed for animals. Waste oil is used to produce steam for cooking the organic waste at high temperature. In other words, motor oil is converted into cooking fuel. Click here to read more.
