UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR MESSAGE REFORM TO UNITE… The implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda made clear to all that bold changes are required in the UN Development System (UNDS) to continue to deliver on development while placing sustainability at its core. In 2019, in response to this need and under the direction of the UN General Assembly, the United Nations began implementing the biggest transformation of the UN development system in history. “The goal of the reform is a 21st-century United Nations focused more on people and less on process, more on delivery and less on bureaucracy.” (UN Secretary General António Guterres) With the UN Reform in full swing around the globe, we have already begun improving the way the UN system operates in Trinidad and Tobago to ensure the UN’s continued added value and help channel greater impact for the lives of the people who live here. A key part of this change has been delinking the UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC) from the UN Development Programme (UNDP), to allow the RC’s Office to be a fully objective and empowered broker for development across sectors. We have started the process of building a strong UN Coordination team with a focus on advocacy, partnerships, data analysis and development finance, and above all, the coordination of the operation, voice, and work of the UN agencies, funds, and programmes in-country. In the end, this change will facilitate the emergence of a new generation of UN country teams, centred on a strategic Multi-Country Sustainable Development Framework, under the leadership of an impartial, independent, and empowered Resident Coordinator. At the core of it all is greater transparency through better communication, connecting more with people to share what we are doing. In this spirit, we will use this newsletter to reach out and tell our stories to reflect on some of the work we are doing to support Trinidad and Tobago in achieving its own 2030 vision. Through programmes that amplify positive influences within communities stricken by conflict, by strengthening statistical capacities in Trinidad and Tobago as well as across the Caribbean and introducing Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) alternatives, we will continue to work with the people of Trinidad and Tobago to create a country that is inclusive, healthy, safe and sustainable. We hope you enjoy finding out more about what we do and hope to hear back from you. Warmest, Marina Walter 2|
