Onehunga Security Update: Please report ALL thefts

incidents

to

Police!

Local businesses continue to be concerned at what appears to be an increasing level of crime in Onehunga town centre. Onehunga Business Association wants to make sure Police get an accurate picture of what’s happening in Onehunga, and so we urge businesses to report ALL thefts or other crimes to Police! The crime statistics generated from these reports help Police to direct resources where they’re most needed - so more reporting could bring more Police!

Call 111 - in emergency situations / crime in progress In an emergency dial 111 FIRST! Calling 111 is free from public telephones and mobile phones.

When you dial 111 you will be asked which emergency service you want: Police, Fire or Ambulance.

For Police an emergency is anything that is happening now, or has just happened, where: - People are in danger - Property is in danger of loss or damage - A crime is being, or has just been committed, and the person or persons responsible for it are nearby - There is a major public inconvenience.

Report to Onehunga Police Station - non-emergency situations / crime has happened In non-emergency situations, such as a past theft, phone Onehunga Police Station during their open hours (Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm) on ph 634 1064 or phone Auckland Central Police on ph 302 6400.

In most situations, you’ll need to personally go to a Police Station to make an official report.

Onehunga Police Station is at 126 Onehunga Mall.

At the Police Station you will be given a Complaints Acknowledgement Form to report a crime or make a complaint on. This form includes a file number and the name of the officer dealing with your complaint.

Once you have made your report police should respond within a reasonable time. If you have questions about your report you should telephone or visit the police station again and tell them the file number.

In some cases, evidence of the crime may have been captured on Onehunga Business Association’s network of CCTV cameras and can assist Police in their investigation. A search of CCTV footage will not begin before the event is reported to Police and a Police Event Number is provided. You’ll then be asked to complete an Onehunga Business Association CCTV Search Request Form. The OBA will ONLY release any relevant CCTV footage to the Police.

If you need help making a report to Police, please contact Onehunga Business Association on 636 8535 and we can make a report for you. We want to hear about all incidents in the area and ensure the Police knows about them. Please don’t be afraid to ask us!

Non-OBA CCTVs cameras not monitored by Onehunga Security Guard Onehunga Business Association has received reports that other security companies are offering and/or planning to put their own CCTV cameras around Onehunga. Please be aware that these CCTV cameras will not be part of the OBA’s network and will not be monitored by the Onehunga Security Guard

Language Line services are available Monday to Friday 9am 6pm and Saturday 9am-2pm.

2. Call outside Language Line hours from a land-line (not mobile phone), and Police will know your address and send a Police car to your address immediately.

Dial 302-6400 -Non-emergency Make your call during Language Line hours: Monday to Friday 9am - 6pm and Saturday 9am-2pm.

Ask the operator for Language Line and tell them your language. You’ll be connected with a Language Line translator to make a report.

ANZAC Day: Public Holiday, restricted trading until 1pm Wednesday 25 April

ANZAC Day Parade The Onehunga RSA commemorates ANZAC Day with the traditional morning march through Onehunga's town centre. The march starts at 9.30am at the corner of Arthur Street and Onehunga Mall and will be led this year by the Dalewool Auckland Brass, one of New Zealand's top brass bands. A service will be held at the Onehunga RSA at 57 Princes Street (at the corner of Onehunga Mall) starting at 10am, followed by entertainment from five-piece band Nimbus from 3pm onwards.

ANZAC Day is a restricted trading day until 1pm, which means that most shops selling goods must remain closed until 1pm. For a detailed explanation of what shops can open on restricted trading days, see the Department of Labour’s website: http://www.dol.govt.nz/er/holidaysandleave/publicholidays/shop-opening-hours.asp Public holiday for your employees As ANZAC Day is a public holiday, if the shop remains closed for the whole day and but for that closure employees would have worked, they must be paid for the day off.

If the shop remains closed until 1pm and an employee works from 1 to 5pm instead of the usually worked 9 to 5pm, then the employee must receive at least time and a half for each hour worked plus a paid alternate day off.

Throughout the week before, there’ll be bright balloons given out in the street for kids to give their Mums. On Saturday, we’ll be attracting families into Onehunga with really creative activities for kids at Onehunga Community Centre. From 11am to 2pm, kids will be able to make their Mums wonderfully imaginative cards and gifts for their Mum’s special day.

Onehunga Business Association’s team grows (Re)Introducing Briar Millar, Events Manager

Onehunga’s 2012 Easter Promotion Easter Egg Hunt & Colouring Competition

Onehunga’s Easter Egg Hunt and Colouring Competition ran for just over two weeks and finished last Tuesday, April 10.

The Easter Egg Hunt draw was won by a very lucky 7-year-old, Riveur Turua Teariki from Paptoetoe - pictured at right receiving her prize, a hamper packed with hundreds of dollars of toys and games, from Onehunga Business Association Events Manager, Briar Millar. Riveur was shopping with her family at Dress-Smart when they spotted info about Onehunga's Easter Egg Hunt. The family then went hunting around Onehunga town centre for more hidden eggs and Riveur's entry was the one drawn from hundreds of entries.

We had some wonderful entries in the Colouring Competition. The competition was fierce, but according to our guest judge, award-winning illustrator Anna Crichton, there were some stand-out entries, in each of the age brackets: 3-5 years, 6-8 years and 9-12 years.

Amanda Kinzett, Manager: Amanda has been managing the OBA for more than six years and has a wealth of knowledge of the Onehunga area and its people, businesses and community.

As Manager, Amanda plays a key role in representing local business and community interests at Auckland Council, Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board and Government, with particular emphasis on far-reaching infrastructure planning. In partnership with the local board, the OBA’s advocacy for Onehunga’s role within the new Supercity structure, has helped define Onehunga’s future as a key growth area within Auckland.

To help stamp out thefts in Onehunga town centre, the Onehunga Business Association has just started the new Onehunga Security Text Alert Service, which is FREE to Onehunga Business Association members.

With her recent focus on submissions to The Auckland Plan, organising local events including the (sadly cancelled) Onehunga Festival, and resolving a diverse range of member issues, Amanda regrets she hasn’t had much time to visit member businesses. With Briar and Debbie now on board, she hopes to have more time to visit members to discuss their issues and needs.

Using this service, we can alert everyone instantly to thieves operating in the area so businesses can be on the look-out for these security threats.

Briar Millar returned to the OBA two weeks ago as our Events Manager. Briar had previously worked at the OBA in 2010/2011 and was behind many events during that time, including our inaugural Santa Parade. Her background is in marketing and events and so we’re thrilled to have her back on board driving events to support our community and businesses in Onehunga.

For this service to work and be of value to members, we depend on businesses to contact us with good descriptions of thieves immediately following an incident!

Satia Sami, Onehunga Security Guard (ICON Security): Satia has become a wellrecognised face around Onehunga town centre in the 8 months since she joined the OBA. Satia is now an expert at CCTV surveillance, overseeing the OBA’s network of 23 cameras, spotting trouble brewing and findin g k ey evidence to aid Police in their en quiries.

We need good details of offenders! Examples of descriptions we could not pass on because they were too vague have included “girl wearing an Onehunga High School uniform” and “Polynesian man in his early 20s”. We need good details please!
