Despite unsteady economic growth nationally, the latest quarterly report from BNZ Marketview shows encouraging retail growth in Onehunga. Spending for the three months to March 31, 2012 in Onehunga was up 4.9% against the first quarter last year, compared with only 0.3% growth across the Auckland Region as a whole. This represents a solid increase in sales, especially in comparison with nearby areas: Newmarket (-0.7%), Sylvia Park (+2.4%) and Royal Oak (+1.9%). The average transaction value for retail sales in Onehunga increased 4.3% to $48.27 from $46.28 in Q1 2011, on an increased 0.6% of total transactions.

BNZ MarketView figures are based on the eftpos and credit card spending of BNZ card holders’ spending with retail merchants throughout the country. With more than 700,000 cardholders, BNZ has around a 20% market share of NZ’s cards business, typically accounting for approximately 14 15% of total spending by value. Its customer base provides an excellent cross section of the national population and, when aggregated, their spending provides a highly accurate indicator of overall consumer spending patterns in New Zealand. Auckland Council funds the quarterly reports provided to Auckland’s Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), including Onehunga Business Association.

Take pride in your store’s appearance A few weekends ago the town centre was “bombed” with RC gang tags. These initials were written everywhere and we sent Graffiti Guard a long list of locations to be cleaned up, and tags were removed within two days. Remarkably, not one business gave us a call to advise that they’d been targeted, despite numerous tags on shop fronts. This indicates that store owners aren’t checking on the condition and cleanliness of their store fronts and seeing what they look like to potential customers. Please, do yourselves and your business a favour: take pride in the appearance of your store front! Give it a steam clean, clean the grime off your signage and phone the OBA immediately you spot graffiti or tags on your premises. Is there graffiti on your roller doors? Let us know by Monday May 21. The OBA performs regular graffiti sweeps of the town centre area, but during business hours. This means that we won’t spot any graffiti on roller doors. Please let us know, by Monday May 21st, if your roller doors have been tagged or graffiti’d and we’ll ask Graffiti Guard to do a special nighttime / after-hours graffiti clean up.

Onehunga Post Office to be auctioned

Council surveying Auckland Business Associations

Iconic Onehunga property under the hammer on May 23

Around 50 OBA members to be contacted by 10 May

The iconic old Onehunga Post Office goes under the auction hammer on May 23. It's a jewel in Onehunga's heritage crown and will continue as Columbus Cafe for at least another 10 years, with a new lease just signed. Sounds like a sound property investment. Call Peter Kermode at Colliers on 021 333 723 for details.

Onehunga Business Association wishes to alert members that there’s a possibility you may be contacted before 10 May by a representative from the research company Colmar Brunton, wanting to ask questions relating to the Business Improvement District (BID) programme that guides the activities of Auckland’s BIDS.

After seismic upgrading and restoration in the mid 1990's, the former Onehunga Post Office was reborn as the Blue Strawberry Cafe before becoming Columbus in 2003. With nine years of successful trading history from this site, Columbus recently committed to a new 10-year lease over the entire ground floor, which includes a west facing rear courtyard and separate storage /amenities block out back.

This survey will allow a collective performance measure indicator of Auckland’s BIDs to go in Auckland Council’s Annual Report. Colmar Brunton is surveying 200 hundred businesses per Local Board area. In our Local Board area there are four BIDs, including the OBA, so we expect around 50 Onehunga businesses will be contacted.

The Postman once lived above what’s now the café and from there he could watch the mail ships sail into harbour before riding his horse down to collect the mail from dockside. Today, the upstairs space is home to a very happy office tenant who never has far to go for good coffee and food. If he was ever to leave, the space could be leased as either commercial or residential space.

If you’re an OBA member and would like further information on this survey, please contact: Maddie (Madeleine) Moore, Senior Client Executive at Colmar Brunton, ph 919 9290 or email maddie.moore@colmarbrunton.co.nz.

On top of a total return of $134,000 net pa, strength of tenant covenant and structural integrity, the new owner will secure fee simple tenure and a strategic corner site in a well established popular location. For more information on this property view : www.colliers.co.nz/17227/

Fake $50 notes in circulation More counterfeit bank notes have been spotted in circulation - this time $50 notes. While NZ’s bank notes are to have updated security features in 2014, our current notes offer many security features, as seen at right. (More info on these at: http://is.gd/NZbanknotes) Most fake notes look and feel different, and are sometimes a slightly different size. If you suspect you’ve been given a fake note, check it for the security features sown at right and against other notes in your till. Be alert to anyone asking to change a $50 into other notes. Give Police a description of anyone attempting to pass a counterfeit bank note. Try to get a car registration number if you’re able to do so safely. Bogus complaints to eateries: Cafés, Restaurants & Takeaways beware! As reported in the NZ Herald last week, “con artists are canvassing restaurants with bogus complaints such as food poisoning in a bid to get "refunds" for meals they never bought.” (Read story here: http://is.gd/badfood). Onehunga’s Library Café is one local eatery we know of that’s recently had someone pull the food poison scam on them. The Restaurant Association is warning its members about the sudden rise in fake complaints to eateries, which include claims of food poisoning, poor service, bad milk in coffee or an incorrect charge. Marisa Bidois, chief executive of the Restaurant Association said such frauds were longstanding but had spiked this year and mostly relied on less senior staff members becoming flustered enough to issue a refund. Read the unlikely complaint Soul Bar’ received from “Rachael Marie Gee”, and owner Judith Tabron’s response here: http://is.gd/SoulBar. Tabron’s excellent letter highlights all the things eateries should query when accused of some fault by a likely con artist. Ask for the receipt first, then details including the date and time the complainant was at your eatery, what they ate, if they made a booking whose name was it under, what was ordered and any details on who served them. The $100 note switcheroo scam A distinctive Brazilian-looking man has successfully swindled a number of Body Shop and Cotton On stores using an old “trick”. The scammer goes to pay for a small item with a $100 note, then he asks for the note back while the shopkeeper is getting his change. Somehow he manages to distract and confuse the shopkeeper, who then gives him change from $100, while the scammer keeps the original $100 note. Police report that approximately six similar incidents have happened so far, mainly at malls, in St Lukes, Newmarket, LynnMall and Albany. The man is described as: Brazilian looking; Short dark hair; Mid 20s; 6ft tall; Braces on his teeth; and carrying a satchel. Please contact Constable Don Allan, Onehunga Community Constable phone 622 8722, if you have any questions or would like advice on how to approach this person if he comes your business.
