More kudos to Satia, Onehunga’s Security Guard - a mention on TV3! On May 30, TV 3’s Campbell Live featured a report on the rise of car break-ins, which account for 18% of all Auckland Central district's crime. Onehunga's CCTV system and our stellar Icon Security Guard, Satia Sami, got a mention from Sgt Mead during the interview. Satia has become expert at spotting crime about to happen or locating great images of crims in action. Last week she passed incriminating pics from our CCTV system to Sgt Mead for a theft from a car, resulting in a fast arrest. Sgt Mead was very pleased. Two lessons here: 1. Don't tempt thieves by leaving valuables in your car - ever! 2. Don't mess with cars in Onehunga's town centre - we'll get you! See video online here: http://is.gd/TV3car_theft

Help Police recover your gear if you’re robbed

Does your business have that something special that keeps your customers coming back for more? Does your store stand out from your competitors and do you have staff who love their jobs? If so, tell us about it when you enter the 2012 TOP SHOP® Retail Excellence Awards. Auckland TOP SHOP® is a biennial event held to recognise and celebrate retail excellence and is considered to be the most prestigious event on the Auckland retail calendar. It is also a very cost effective way for retailers to have their store mystery shopped as part of the professional judging process by HOED Mystery Shopping NZ Ltd. All entrants will receive their individual results following the awards evening. This provides retailers with a benchmark and the opportunity to future proof their business in an increasingly competitive market.

Operation SNAP (Serial Number Action Partnership), an initiative of the New Zealand Police, aims to make it harder for criminals to sell stolen goods in New Zealand, easier for Police to return recovered goods to their owners and, by making stolen goods more traceable, help reduce burglary and property offending.

Auckland entries opened 28 May 2012

There is a $100.00 plus GST entry fee for NZRA members ($200 plus GST for nonmembers). This goes toward covering the cost of your HOED Mystery Shopping NZ Ltd shopping visit and report. If you would like an entrant pack call TOP SHOP® freephone 0800 24 25 24 or just go online at www.retail.org.nz to enter, full details will be on the website. The search is on...

The Christchurch rebuild is underway and the construction sector is growing again. At the same time global growth is slowing and prices for our major exports have taken a dip. Meanwhile low interest rates have given a modest boost to the housing market and consumer spending. Eventually a booming construction sector will see interest rates moving higher. But with the Reserve Bank relaxed about inflation and worries about the exchange rate, that now looks like a 2012 story. Growth this year is likely to come more from domestic than external sources. On the one hand the global economy has cooled, most importantly in China and India. With global demand slowing and strong global production, prices for New Zealand’s main export commodities have continued to fall over the past few months, and export conditions have generally become more challenging. We aren’t forecasting the economy to accelerate quite as rapidly as we did three months ago, though we still expect economic growth above 2% this year, and above 3% next. Low interest rates are, we think, a major reason for the recovery that both have seen recently, even against the background of weak migration and fragile consumer confidence. With interest rates now likely to stay low for even longer, a stronger housing market looks a pretty safe bet over the next couple of years. Nationwide, we now expect house prices to increase around 6% this year and 3% next. Stronger momentum in the housing market should in turn mean stronger consumer spending through the middle and latter part of this year and into 2013. That said, we still don’t expect retail activity to bolt out the door. The relative caution that households have exhibited since the financial crisis is likely to be with us for a while yet, and while we expect consumer spending to strengthen further over the coming year, it’s likely to do so at a slower rate than the overall economy. We also need to stress that we see any spending spree fuelled by low interest rates as a temporary affair. When interest rates eventually rise as we expect, this will put a dampener on both the housing market and on related retail activity. But for the time being, consumers’ wallets may get more of an airing than they’ve had in a while. Retail Roundup Real retail sales fell 1.5% in the March quarter, as payback for the temporary spending boost provided by the Rugby World Cup in the previous two quarters. But setting that aside, there are signs that domestic spending has accelerated a little: retail volumes are still about 2.5% higher than in mid-2011. The cards data confirm the relative resilience of domestic spending – adjusted for the timing of Anzac day, April spending was 3.3% higher than a year earlier. While momentum seems to have waned in recent months, things may be picking up again in the durables, consumables and accommodation categories.
