Onehunga Coastline Starts To Take Shape Great weather very helpful to the progress over the past few months

The Onehunga coastline has really started to take shape and more than 200 people went along to the Open Day at the Onehunga Waterfront on Sunday 12 May. The Fulton Hogan construction team were at hand to explain the project and answer any questions. The local community has been working for some time to reestablish a connection to the sea, and the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board and the NZ Transport Agency have provided $28 million in funding to make this possible. Many young families attended the Open Day and it was popular with older residents too— some were able to describe what the original bay was like. The project is progressing well and over the coming months you will see:

Make Your Business A Safer Place Tips for preventing theft in your business

Shoplifting and theft is hitting Onehunga businesses hard and it’s vital we do all we can to prevent crime happening as well as knowing how to react in the event of something happening. Professional service One of the key ways that you can prevent shop theft is to be professional, well-trained and motivated staff are the most effective deterrent in any store. Greet each customer and give them prompt attention when they enter your store. If you cannot serve them immediately, acknowledge them by making eye contact. Remember to trust your instincts and don’t stereotype— anyone can steal and anything can be stolen. Store design

           

Keep windows clear of posters, shelving and advertising that block the view into the shop. Make sure people outside can see clearly into the shop. The darker the shop is, and the more hidden you are from the street, the greater the opportunity for theft and robbery. Install a good quality CCTV system. Put a video monitor and surveillance camera at the entrance so customers can see themselves in the monitor when they walk into the shop. Put up clearly visible signs that let customers know you have security measures, such as cameras and drop safes Make sure the interior of the shop is well lit during work hours and after hours Put the cash register at the front of the store near the main entrance. This will help deter thieves, as they will have to walk past your staff when entering of exiting the store. Make sure all areas of the shop can be seen from the sales counter Raise the sales counter to increase visibility of merchandise Keep shelves low so staff can see over them Eliminate hidden or blind spots that make it easier for someone to steal items Keep displays full and in order so staff can see over them Keep expensive goods in the back of the shop— on display but under lock and key Train staff in loss prevention and detection techniques. Do they know how to apprehend shop thieves?

Territorial design reinforcement  Make sure the entrance to the store is clearly defined. This will avoid customer confusions and give good reason to question people who loiter in entrance ways.  Make sure there is no easy access to the roof, from either inside or outside the building  Ensure entrances and exits are monitored and controlled  Make sure the exterior of buildings and loading areas are well lit, with no blind spots or hidden areas.  Put up signs in loading areas to display designated delivery hours, giving staff justifiable reason to question trespassers  Try to ensure parking areas are clearly visible from the building or street—and preferably visible from the store  Set up barriers to keep people out of certain areas. Question any person who heads into an out of bounds area.  Clearly define areas and pathways in the store for customers to browse and purchase. This will make customers feel more comfortable and will help to highlight people who are in the store for legitimate reasons.

Onehunga Security Update 

A call from a concerned business owner and quick reactions by Onehunga’s Security Guard, Satia Sami, and a police officer who was in our office at the time, led to a shoplifter being reprimanded immediately.

A glass window shattered onto the Onehunga Mall footpath posing a significant health and safety risk to shoppers. We blocked off the area until a glazier came to repair the glass. If you notice something dangerous — whether it’s water gushing out of a meter, rubbish bins obstructing the footpath or other hazards, please call us immediately on 636 8535, so we can make sure the area is safe for our shoppers.

On request from us, the Police and a group of Asian Community Patrol volunteers have been visiting Asian business owners and talking to them about crime prevention.

A reminder to lock away laptops, wallets, handbags and other small valuables. Do not leave them behind the counter. It is too easy for opportunist thieves to snatch them when you are occupied with a customer. We are looking at funding options to increase our CCTV network as we still have a few areas needing coverage — we will let you know how we go.

Did you know that….

Onehunga was the first to produce iron from our own sand. There was a fine factory beside the railway station, which manufactured pig-iron etc, until a shooting, which caused a near murder, stopped the industry and closed the factory down.
