Reach for the stars as Matariki begins
Embracing June

The traditional Maori New Year is marked by the rise of Matariki, the Maori name for the Pleiades constellation. Matariki Weaving our is celebrated when the constellation is seen from Aotearoa. Matariki through our eyes Preparations are also well underway for Matariki@Onehunga ‘Through our eyes’ art exhibition which will take place between the 16 and 20 July 2012. Members from the monthly art group are currently working hard on their art pieces. This is the third year that Onehunga Community Centre has hosted the ‘Through our eyes’ art exhibition as part of the Matariki@Onehunga festival. Each year this exhibition has attracted diverse artwork from the local and wider community art groups. ‘Through our eyes’ art exhibition has grown from strength to strength providing a place not only for emerging and talented artists to display their works, but also for local community group participation. This year will feature more community groups including Rick’s drawing and painting workshops and of course Picasso Kidz, showcasing the diversity and interpretation of Matariki@Onehunga ‘through our eyes’. The two paintings shown here, Father Sky and Mother and child bonding as one’ are by Lee McDonnell, a member of the Onehunga Community Centre monthly art group which will be part of the art exhibition. ‘Father Sky – warrior, hunter provider for this family using mixed media and acrylic paint on canvas and Mother and child bonding as one – a new beginning –acrylic on canvas. Mana Onehunga Weaving the spirit of Whanaungatanga Preparation is now well underway for the latest Onehunga Centre mural named ‘Whanaungatanga’ (connecting and relationship building). This month we have begun the task of tearing paper for the collaged areas. We are using red, orange, yellow and brown for the tree trunk. These will be placed on top of the painted brown base coat. We have also begun preparing the torn paper for the blue sky area. This is a process using a range of blue tones which will then be stuck to the blue base coat. In this area community groups will be encouraged to write their messages. Once all the preparations have been completed, the local community will invited to begin painting and gluing in June during the Matariki@Onehunga festival Desiree Alexandre, artist in residence,/Helen Satele facilitator Mana Onehunga
Weaving our workforce at OCC Training our early childhood educators The OCC is delighted to welcome Workforce Development back into its fold where they are running training workshops in the Certificate in Childhood Education (ECE), Level 3. This course, which covers 21 weeks, enables the students to have hands-on experience with young children and their parents/caregivers who attend the many different activities and programmes dedicated to the younger members of our community. On completing the Certificate, students can either go on to Level 4, or begin study in the ECE diploma or degree. Rana, childhood educator for course says “this centre gives my students the opportunity to interact with the community and especially the children as this relates directly to our learning.” Additionally, Rana adds “our students volunteered with the community for the mother’s day activity day. This place has a great feeling to it and it seems everyone and anyone can feel a real sense of belonging to the place which is what makes the centre so GREAT!” For information on Certificate in Childhood Education (ECE), Level 3, phone (09) 277 9341 - 0800 833 5581 or visit our website:www.workforce.ac.nz Rana Askari, Early Childhood Tutor, Workforce Development

All Sewn up at the OCC Weaving strands of tuitui The Onehunga Community Centre (OCC) and the Salvation Army partnered up to run sewing workshops aimed at developing and refreshing our community in sewing skills, pattern making and craft. The ability to repair a torn school uniform, take up a hem neatly or sew an item of clothing are valuable skills which will not only save money, but will also enable participants to get longer wear out of clothing which might otherwise be thrown away. The OCC are so lucky to have Millie as a tutor for ‘Sew Styley’ workshops as she brings with her a wealth of skill, knowledge and experience which she shares with all who attend her workshops. If you are looking to learn or refresh yourself in the art of sewing while enjoying the friendship of others, then ‘Sew Styley’ is for you. ‘Sew Styley’ workshops run every Monday in ONE Pearce: 9.30am-11.30am – Sewing workshops 12.30pm-2.30pm – Intermediate and pattern construction Cost $5 per class (8-week course) Please contact the Centre to register your interest in this great initiative, or check out our website www.onehungacentre.org.nz. Additionally, if you have your own sewing machine you are welcome to bring it along with you. Phone 6349253 for further information or call into the Community Centre.

Weaving stories Our community loves turning a leaf As we wrap up a wonderful and musical May, we look forward to the new life that the celebration of Matariki brings. During the Matariki@Onehunga festival, we will be having a fantastic storytime on 22 June in the foyer, complete with fun stories in Te Reo and English, as well as songs and activities to celebrate the Matariki new year together. We are looking forward to welcoming our new Librarian Danielle to the team. Danielle comes to us from Mt Roskill library, and will be a wonderful addition, bringing a passion for communities and children to our team. We can't wait for her to start!! We have begun our planning for the school holidays. The theme this year is Arty-Party, so watch this space and check out the library for some fun activities. Also, keep your eyes peeled in July as we have our very first library challenge for teens! FUSE is going to be heaps of fun with activities and an awesome free party for those who complete the programme. More details to come soon, but you're not going to want to miss this! As always, we love to see you in the library, so come and pop in and check out our books, mags, DVDs, free internet, wifi and much more! Rachael Town-Treweek, Manager Onehunga Library
Weaving our youth through Common Ground YOUTH WEEK 2012 has been awesome!!!! It never ceases to amaze me how vibrant and dynamic our youth are. This year the YMCA, Raise Up N’ Represent (RUNR) and Onehunga Community centre exceeded expectations with a 220 youth attending a pumping dance party organised by local youth from RUNR, SENZ, local schools and YWCA future leaders. To add to the celebrations, MSL youth hospitality students showed off their skills by offering coffee and treats in the community foyer at the OCC. This followed with the crew from the Revolution Tour who entertained our community after school with song and dance... big thanks to these inspirational youth. During Common Ground, the OCC were proud to support York and Jag Popham who performed at the Pearce Street hall to fundraise for monies for York to achieve her dream of attending the Royal Winnipeg School of Ballet, a prestigious professional school in Canada... Well done York for being accepted. Check out the Youth Year 2012 photo album.... Onehunga Youth, you rock!!! Common Ground youth Michelle Mitchell, co-ordinator youth programmes OCC
