Noah And the Race Against Rising Waters

Noah asks Professor Knows “what do you know about climate change?’

3

His mum once said “We, the Human Population are melting our world to cause the Disasters of today

4

He Replied “Climate change is a scary reality, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the scale of the problem, it’s easy to think it won’t affect you in your lifetime, However, we are the first generation to grow up able to learn about it, We are also the last generation who really gets the opportunity to tackle it!”

5

Professor Knows replied ‘Climate change is affecting our planet right Now and we as individuals can do things to tackle this problem, the effects can be seen around the world with increasingly worse storms, droughts, wild fires and especially floods!’ Noah’s face dropped with how many different things can affect the world

Â

If all the worlds’ ice were to melt it would raise sea levels by more than 21 feet, this is enough water to submerge some of our largest coastal cities around the world.

Global sea level rise, this will affect everyone everywhere

Evaluation Of Confirmatory Stage At the beginning of this stage I was nervous to go into it, as it is the biggest task I have done so far. Creating my own intentions within my statement of intent was a big task as I knew it needed to be something that means a lot to me and that I could develop it in different ways and use different techniques and mediums, I feel that I chose an issue that is widely known and viewed and I knew from personal experience that it can be very destructive and attractive at the same time especially in terms of the imagery that can be created about it, this issue is Global Warming. I chose global warming because it is affecting everyone everywhere, and the next few generations are going to be widely and heavily attacked by the destruction of global warming, for me the largest factor of globing warming is flooding and sea level rise as I see this where I live nearly every year without fail, hence throughout this stage I concentrated mainly on flooding and sea level rise, both in my research and in my illustrations. I found my research very interesting as I had to research the background of the issue at hand, and for me it became quite apparent that this issue is on a large scale, even to the point of world leaders joining together to try and prevent it. My artist research was a long task, as I struggled to find illustrators that both inspired me and have done work around water or scenery in terms of natural disasters. The ones I did record are the ones that definitely inspire me to create my own work, using their styles, mediums and techniques or influencing my own inspiration off their illustrations, I found I liked the loose line work or paint strokes that create the atmosphere that I wanted within my illustrations this inspired greatly to proceed with this project. The styles and strokes of artists like Leonid Alfremov and Heather Gatley are ones that got me to admire illustration in the first place, so these two artists came to mind when I thought of pursuing this project, to enhance and influence me to create imagery that will reflect water and atmosphere within my work. I think I succeeded in doing this looking back at my illustration based on the sequence of the story, with scattered blotches of paint. These two artists also influenced the concept sketches of scenery or emotion in my ink and water illustrations that I am really pleased with how they turned out, and the reason I only used black India ink was because of the photographer Matilda using black and white imagery to suggest the emotion and atmosphere within her work, this is what I was trying to create with mine.

Overall I am very pleased with the outcomes that I had created using traditional mediums. The piece I like the most is this image to the right because this is what I think when people get together for one cause that affects all. This piece consists of India ink and Gouache paints these mediums are materials I have never used before this project and the final look of this illustration creates the atmosphere that depicts pollution, crowds, speeches, waves and buildings, with all done with a very loose technique. Again I chose black, blue and grey, for several reasons, firstly its shows pollution within the image which is the main cause for global warming, it then shows that Noah, the character from the story, is talking to large crowds about the problem the world faces, thirdly the blue represents the water that is going to destroy major cities and countries if the world doesn’t change.

Another illustration that I am really pleased with the outcome is this concept design. Originally I was thinking I was going to use this image as a background for the informational animation as it conveys very strong emotional sadness, which is the number one emotion that came back from the survey. This piece was created with just ink and water, I really like the look and atmosphere of this image, the added bonus about this design, is that the dark surrounding can be used for different depictions, for example getting swallowed by water or fire, that the person is in a dark place because of the natural disaster or just ordinary clothing from a certain region or ethnic background. I find this piece very diverse and very emotional this is the main reason I didn’t choose to go with this for the background.

make it

This Mixed media illustration is on a large canvas, as I wanted to be able to get a lot detail and colour within the image. The size of this is 80cm by 60cm this is because I wanted to look like a mural type image. The idea was that this is the virtual reality goggle that Noah used to see what happens, based on the predictions of the past. It’s to depict floods, sea level rise, droughts and wildfires. I think I captured this quite well with the use of watercolour, gouache, ink, pastels and a black pen. The different medias were to create different textures throughout the piece; overall I am very pleased with outcome and this illustration. This illustration is the one I used for the background of the informational animation on the background of global warming.

Although originally I was to crate an animation about the story I felt that it would be better for the story that the informational science side was to be animated instead, this gave the idea that the goggles will show he future of what’s to come, and the animation shows on a billboard or second screen in the goggles showing what is happening right now, for example extreme worse weather conditions and wild fires and droughts, so this was the route I felt strongly towards. The Final outcome is an illustration animation, of the story I created about global warming, in particular sea level rise. It wasn’t my initial idea however I am pleased with the outcomes and the final piece. I feel that it follows various aspects raised in the survey; it relates to the reality of today’s world, it creates atmospheres and emotions without being too emotional which also was apart of the survey. I fell that it shows the problem in a fun yet serious depiction.

I think the colours throughout all the illustrations resemble water and sea and sky, the fact I used watery mediums helped create the atmosphere and place or situation that the story details, and I feel I used techniques that I researched rather well to create the imagery I set out to create.
