DIPLOMA IN FOUNDATION STUDIES (ART AND DESIGN) STATEMENT OF INTENT 1. NAME: Katie Hobbs 2. CANDIDATE NUMBER: 3. WORKING PROJECT TITLE: Inside and Outside 4. PROJECT AREA: Fine art Section 1 PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH UNITS 1-7 Since starting this diploma, I have gained many new skills and techniques that have improved my art work. These include print making, mixed media and also photography. Researching various artists, has allowed me to draw inspiration from their work and given me the confidence to try different mediums. Mixed media is something that I didn’t use prior to this diploma but have grown to love and will continue to use in future art projects. Learning so many new skills has led to me being more creatively ambitious. The new challenges that I have faced artistically have been both exciting and at times difficult. This all leads to progression and growth. Section 2 PATHWAY CHOICES My chosen pathway was fine art as I feel that is where my artistic skills are better suited. Voyeurism was my project of choice and allowed me to use different materials to convey the subject. I found the research to be very interesting. It gave me an insight into voyeurism which allowed for new ideas and helped me produce my final pieces. I created a piece of work in resin which I enjoyed experimenting with and was pleased with the final outcome. This is something that I would definitely utilise in future projects. Section 3 FINAL MAJOR PROJECT AIMS AND REALISATION 3

My final project will be based on the concept of ‘Inside Outside’. This title allows so much scope to produce some really exciting and interesting work. I will explore different ideas and mediums taking inspiration from subjects such as, nature (seed pods, nuts, fish, animal carcass), isolation (being on the outside of a group), the soul leaving the human body. I intend to do a whole range of drawings which I could then develop into a final piece. Researching various artists on this subject matter will enable endless possibilities to be creative and produce some fascinating work. Photography, printing, painting and mixed media will play a big part within this project. I will be using and experimenting with different tools and materials such as; mud, plaster, ink and wax. I especially want to use resin again, as I was really happy with the previous result I used in my pathway choice. Ivan Bignami has produced some interesting black and white photographic work on the theme ‘Inside Outside’. I found his work to be both striking and mood provoking. I intend to explore a variety of artists to gain a wide range of ideas and aim to show this theme through my eyes. Section 4 EVALUATION I will evaluate my work as I go to ensure I’m producing the best I can and to stay focused and on track with deadlines. I intend to create a bibliography full of research methods to include books, internet and other resources that I have taken inspiration from. I am really looking forward to exploring this topic and experimenting with new ideas. I intend to push boundaries with creative thinking and show my capabilities as a growing artist whose work is evolving.
