DIPLOMA IN FOUNDATION STUDIES (ART AND DESIGN) STATEMENT OF INTENT 1. NAME: Declan Goodby 2. CANDIDATE NUMBER: 3. WORKING PROJECT TITLE: Short Storyboard Animation - Rising Waters 4. PROJECT AREA: Illustration, Animation Section 1 PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH UNITS 1-7 This Diploma has taught me many valuable skills and techniques, throughout researching and developing my own work, through inspiration from other artists, it has been beneficial for me as I have been able to learn new and challenge existing skills and try completely new ways of working. This forced me out of my comfort zone to expand my knowledge throughout these Units. Each Unit inspired me to learn and create new learning styles that I previously didn’t use or know about, specifically Photography, drawing and printmaking introduced many ways of working for me, with confidence. Painting with watercolour, oils and acrylics was something I’ve always done with a conventional mind, however the artists researched, made me step out of my comfort zone to get a taste of unconventional ways of depicting differences with colours and textures, layering methods and even the application methods. Photography and printmaking expanded my knowledge of placements and colour composition to create pieces that resemble the subject and enforce the object to an appealing and effective state. Sculpture was a scary thought for me, as I haven’t had much experience with this, researching artists that specialize this art form, gave me the knowledge to embark on this challenge, and create an unconventional sculpture that stretches the imagination. My achievement of sculpture gave me the understanding of thoroughly looking and studying an object before depicting it in any medium I use. Throughout all my progress, the most I have took away from these units is that I can effectively make great pieces of art that illustrate, what I have learnt, seen from others and my ability of future progression. Section 2 PATHWAY CHOICES My chosen pathway was Illustration. I chose this for many reasons, as I love to draw and design, in any spare time I have. It interests me to come up with new concepts and create digital designs that communicate a certain level of my mind and personality, or that of a design specification. This interest came as I was traveling in New York and Florida, seeing the different concepts and designs for both adverts and characters within broadcasting publications such as books, films, animations and special effects within TV adverts, This made realise there is something that appeals to me about the concept or character design process. Illustration is a powerful design method and can be used widely with a variety of different approaches. This interests me, as I can be exploratory in any design as I am still exploring different ways, processes and mediums to create the best visualizing image for the text or thought it is communicating. Researching different Illustrators such as Quentin Blake and Nick Bantock increased my desire to learn new 4

processes with different mediums such as digital drawing, and line drawing with light watercolours to enhance certain aspects, this combined with character design research of animator and illustrator, Jin Kim, gave me more aspiration to learn the art of animation in its simplest form, a flipbook. While progressing through the character design brief for the illustration pathway choice, I discovered more ways of movement of a character through model sheets, flip books and movement with a stick stuck to the character. This is what made me decide on exploring this further to produce other processes and development of animated or moving imagery. Exploring this further for my final major project combined with a passion I have for character design and concept art, this will be my most enjoyable and inspiring project yet. My final major project will be portraying aspects of the world we live in, that not everyone is affected by, such as environmental issues in different continents or landmasses, and how it affects those different people. Therefore I will be creating a short story about a character that travels and documents issues that have happened to people on different lands, talking to those affected. This will further my development of character design, concept art and storyboarding as these are just a few of the processes I will be using to create an animated story based on real issues and people in different lands, and produce different designs to create the sense of a realisation of what is happening. Section 3 FINAL MAJOR PROJECT AIMS AND REALISATION It is my intention to investigate a specific environmental issue in a way, which resonates to young adults with a view to raising awareness. I will look at different media publications such as, magazines, newspapers, TV broadcasts, and Internet sources to understand the scale of these issues, the people that have been affected and their resulting emotional well-being. In this way I hope to understand and describe that emotional state within my illustrations. I will further this by researching animation or film concerning global disasters and rising sea levels in particular and how this has been portrayed to a specific target audience. Examples of this can be found in regard to, The Ice Age and Global Warming in particular. I will also look at and document how international artists and photographers have portrayed these issues, in order to understand how others have dealt with environmental issues and how they have approached this subject creatively. As my target audience is young adults, I will speak to this target group through social media and discuss their views on specific environmental issues, Music, politics, what they read, films they watch, art and design they enjoy and who themselves follow on social media. In doing this I will create a template of the preferences of this group which will indicate to me further research I must undertake, and eventually what form my characters will take. There are many different story telling devices and stories are developed in various ways using different techniques examples of which, verbal, written, still imagery animated content storyboards and concept design are all of relevance to me. Further to this I will look at the work of current animators such as Jin Kim who inspired me and directed me towards Illustration and animation. Further research will involve looking at specific storytellers, scriptwriters, digital artists and model makers looking at the techniques they use to create their work and how they develop their concepts from the initial idea through to the final result. I will take inspiration from this research and after creating a story outline I will begin to visualise my idea through story boarding and drawing ideas for my characters. I will allow the work to evolve organically but I will be mindful of my target audience in as far as the atmospheres I create the style and look overall and the message I want to impart. My final outcome will be an animated film and accompanying illustrations with text. Section 4 EVALUATION

5

I will evaluate the progress I make throughout each component I come across. I will make notes as I discover and practice new and challenging processes and techniques. I will evaluate the direction that my project will undergo and whether I am within the aims of the stated project. I will review each stage on what I have achieved, through exploration and diversity of the way the story is depicted and developed. Whether I have used my time effectively to explore as many methods as possible and whether I have accomplished what I set out to achieve. In this case, it would be a series of conceptual art, storyboards and the animation and the techniques and processes I have used to create the outcomes. Whether I have improved my work and been exploratory and stretch my thought process and abilities within the whole stage of the final major project.

The Idea behind this was to involve as many techniques that I found interesting from the artists I research Such as Patwale, Alfremov, Costantini, Laura Barrett, Matthew Cook, Heather Gatley and Bruce Whatley. Using these artists’ styles and techniques to create an illustration and animation using the influences I researched, based around the story outline and the results of the survey. Furthering that I used some styles from the artists recommended to me through the survey and them into my illustrations. Overall I am pleased with the illustrative pieces I have accumulated through this task and I feel that it illustrates parts of the story as I intended. My Intention was to create illustrations and animate the story of global warming, through the ideas expressed to me through research and talking to people to see what they like. That being said I did loose the capability of any computer aided help within my illustration and animating, so my ideas were going to change throughout this task.
