Section 1 PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH UNITS 1-7 The exploratory stage and the pathways stage both taught me new and different skills, and it is clear from looking back through my work that I have made a huge amount of progress since the beginning of my diploma. The exploratory stage was really beneficial as it taught me to experiment with and try different methods/ideas that were completely new to me. This improved my confidence and made me realise what I was capable of. It also showed me what my strengths were, and these were the skills that I wanted to use and develop in the pathways stage. I’ve also learnt the importance of research. Choosing architecture for the pathway stage was definitely the right decision because it is something I have a real passion for and would like to pursue, therefore I really enjoyed researching the subject and coming up with my own design ideas. I noticed particular improvement in the presentation of my work and the quality of my drawings as I progressed through the unit. In addition, I felt that this part of the course taught me to conduct my research in different ways; not just using the internet and books, but also using actual materials to experiment with lighting, colour and texture. It has taught me the importance of research in an architecture project, and how good quality and detailed research helps with the development of design ideas and leads to a better final outcome.

Section 2 PATHWAY CHOICES I chose architecture for the pathway stage of my course because I am really interested in the design of the exterior and interior of a space. This project has taught me a huge amount; looking through my work I feel I have made a lot of progress since the beginning. There’s improvement in the presentation and layout of my work, as well clear progression in my design ideas.

The project brief was to design a place of my own, and the first part was the research stage, which gave me the opportunity to learn about the work of different architects and different types of architecture. The fact that I researched a whole range of different architects each with unique individual styles was beneficial to me because it gave me a whole range of ideas that I never would’ve considered before. The use of paper was a large part of my research; I used paper folding techniques to investigate different textures and patterns, as well as cutting pieces of paper into different shapes to see what effect this had on the view. By actually physically making shapes and experimenting with them I got a real idea of how they could be incorporated in my design. Although the research stage was quite time consuming and sometimes challenging as it involved sorting through a lot of information and identifying what was relevant and important, I did really enjoy it and I learnt a lot about different architects, building materials and design ideas. It is a crucial part of the project and once I’d completed the research stage I felt confident in the theme I wanted my structure to have, and I was ready to move onto the development stage where I could improve and build on my initial ideas. Part of the development stage focused on model making, something which was completely new to me. I found it challenging at first, and it took time, patience and practise but I am pleased with the models I produced. Working in 3D really gave me a feel for my building and it made me realise which features wouldn’t work and which would. It was crucial in helping me make final decisions about my design. I also produced a range of drawings in the development stage, showing different final outcomes for my design. I then chose my favourite design which I developed further, focusing more on the details such as lighting, measurements, interior and materials. Because of the amount of research I’d done previously, as well as the experimentation with models and paper, it made the decision making process easier for me; I had a clear idea of what I wanted to achieve so I was able to arrive at a final design which I felt confident in. For the outcome stage I produced 6 A2 sheets with my final drawings on and each sheet had a theme. I was really pleased with these A2 sheets and I feel that they show all the different aspects and features of my final design. I then incorporated all of these ideas into one final drawing, as well as producing a final model. By choosing a circular building this really challenged me but I feel it was the right decision as it gives the structure character and fits in with my theme. Overall I am really proud of my design because it fulfils my aim of creating a relaxing, elegant and idyllic space.

Section 3 FINAL MAJOR PROJECT AIMS AND REALISATION I will research disused buildings at an old US air force base near my house, and will choose one to convert into a space for local people to use. I will research the surroundings of my chosen building as well as its history, internal structure and architectural features. In addition, I will take photographs of all angles of the building and its surroundings using a high quality digital camera, experimenting with the zoom and panorama setting. It is my intention to obtain floor plans of the building so that I can change the internal structure. My target audience will be young adults aged between 16 and 25, and the building will primarily be a music venue. There will also be somewhere to buy food and an eating area. The interior style and décor needs to appeal to my 3

target audience, and must have a clear theme and style. I will investigate raw materials and textures as I intend the space to have an industrial style perhaps mixed with something softer. I will photograph examples of these materials in different types of lighting. I’d like to research Urban art, looking at well known street artists to see if this could be incorporated in my project. Artificial lighting is an important consideration; I need to consider how bright it needs to be, what type of lighting I will use, whether it needs to be adjustable, what it will look like aesthetically. I will use the internet for some of this research, as well as a camera to take my own photographs. I may use Photoshop to edit, and I will also produce my own drawings and sketches using different media. When investigating different patterns and textures I will use prints and paper. It is my intention make notes throughout, recording which ideas I like and will carry forward, and which ones I will reject. Furthermore, I will work out of my sketchbook, creating a mood board at the end of the research stage. I will then begin to finalize these ideas using collages, drawings, photographs and perhaps prints before embarking on the final outcome. Section 4 EVALUATION

I will evaluate my progress by splitting my project into 3 parts: research, development and outcome. I will make sure I spend an adequate amount of time on each section, creating a timetable to plan my time. I will frequently refer back to my project aims to make sure I am meeting them and researching what I planned to. When I review my final project I will look at the quality of my work, the layout and presentation, the development of my ideas and the range of techniques and resources used. I also aim to try new methods and learn new skills, as well as build on and improve the ones I learnt from the pathway stage.
